Can't get newly purchased macbook pro to turn on - only a blinking folder with ? shows up on gray screen - help

How do I get a newly purchased Macbook Pro to turn on - all I get is a blinking folder with "?" on a gray screen?

Take it back where it was purchased. Include all packaging and take your dated receipt. You can request an exchange or your money back within the first 14 days from date of purchase. Don't delay.

Just brought home newly purchased MacBook Pro 15"/Maverick/Retinal Display. To my astonishment, there is NO DVD slot! No one in the store told me about this missing feature. Intolerable, How does one install software? Insert CDs to copy for iTunes?Do I have to purchase an external DVD drive? Is one even available? What a crock!

I’ve owned Macs since 1990 (IICX my first), mostly desktops. Having had DVD/CD drives in all my previous laptop Macs since 2001 -  (2) G4 Powerbooks,  A 17” Mac Book Pro - and also inspecting a friend’s year-old Mac Book Pro which had the DVD slot - unless someone told me at purchase, I had no reason to know that the Retina display version of the 15” had NO DVD drive. ANYHOW, I fully intended to buy the non-Retina display version, because it was cheaper. Unfortunately by the time I got to the Apple store they were no longer selling the non-Retina display version; all versions were ONLY with the Retina display. And the fine distinction of a DVD vs. a non-DVD drive was not pointed out. So now I have to shell out an additional $80 bucks for an external SuperDrive.

the battery in my MacBook Pro 17 requesting assistance only after 277 cycles with a capacity of 9444 mAh, Is it possible?I performed the calibration, but nothing changes.
MacBook Pro (17 pollici, Half 2010)
    MacBookPro6,1
    Intel Core i5
    2,53 GHz
    Memory 4 GB

Batteries will vary in how long they last. Apple will say that for machines built in the last 4 years that the battery may last up to 5 years approximately. However this depends on usage.
You can have someone who never ever uses the battery and only ever runs the computer from the mains and the battery will fail as it never gets used and the cycle count will be very low.
To put things in perspective. I have a 15" Macbook Pro with Retina Display (Late 2013). I've had it for probably 8 months and I have 128 cycles on my battery, approx. half yours in a quarter of the time. So if you're not always use the battery it can be affected in other ways.
You can try to see if calibrating the battery helps. Look at http://apple.com/batteries for information on how to do this or try an SMC Reset and see if these make a difference. If not, then seek support from an Apple Store or Authorised service provider.
    Hope this makes sense.

If running 10.7 or later hold down Command-R at Startup.
    This should invoke recovery Mode.
    Choose Disk Utility.
Select your Hard drive. Inspect the SMART Status in the lower right of the window for "Verified".
Select the Mac OS X Volume (originally Macintosh HD) click (Repair Disk)
If errors, run again until it comes clean or gets stuck.

  • Can I get a new macbook pro under the warranty?

Its been two months since I got my macbook pro. I got the newer 2011 version. Less than a month into getting it my keys started falling off and less than 2 months later my hard drive went out for no reason and I had to get it replaced. And now my other keys are all falling off too. I don't understand. I feel like I was sold a refurbished mac because everything keeps breaking. Do you think its better to just get a new macbook pro? Is that even possible? I also feel like it takes a while to turn on than when I first got it. How long is the normal start up time?

If you have had this Mac for less then a year then the computer is still under warranty.
I also feel like it takes a while to turn on than when I first got it. How long is the normal start up time?
It depends. If you have applications set to launch when you startup the Mac, that can slow down the amount of time it takes to boot your Mac.
Open System Preferences > Users & Groups then select the Login Items tab.

  • How much can I get for my Macbook Pro?

I'm in the market for a new Macbook Pro, thus I'm looking to sell my old one. It's a 2006 model, and it has a few dents and scratches as a result of frequent use and carrying it around.
Processor = 2 GHz Intel Core Duo
    Memory = 2 GB
    Hard Drive = 500 GB
It's fully operational, runs smoothly and everything, but there are two main flaws: Number one, the battery has died, so it only works when the charger is plugged in. I can easily replace the battery, though. The other problem is that the motherboard is acting a bit weird. Every now and then the computer will completely freeze up, forcing a restart. This is the main reason I'm in the market for a new one.
With all of this being said, can anyone give an estimate on how much I should expect for it? The motherboard issue is the main flaw, so I'm not expecting to be able to sell it for some crazy amount. Maybe someone can use it for parts or something. Any estimates? Thanks.

Apple has their recycle deal through PowerON Services, and BestBuy will give you an estimate online (you get the most if you take a gift card, less if you want a check). Since both are looking to make a profit off of the recycled machines, you'll get less than a private sale, but for an older parts machine, maybe not that much less.
My 5 year old powerbook G4, which does still work fine, has a still mildly useful battery and is very good cosmetically was only worth about $164 according to the BestBuy site (which I was actually pleasantly surprised about, since I figured it was only worth about half that).

  • Can't get new 15in Macbook Pro to work.

So I just bought my first Macbook Pro, halfway through the startup process it froze so I decided to reboot it. When I started it back up it stayed on a white screen and it had the "no" symbol, then switched to a symbol of a folder with a question mark.
I asked a friend of mine who owns a Mac and he said it was probably because Snow Leopard was not yet installed into the computer. So I inserted the startup DVD for Snow Leopard and the computer booted into the Mac OS X Installer and let me get to the point where it asks you to select the disk where you want to install Mac OS X.
The only problem is that it's telling me that it can't start up from my Hard Drive.
School starts for me in a few days and I really need to figure out how to get my Macbook up and running. Please help.

    Hi Daniel,
Sounds like your friend may be right and there may be no OS for the system to boot from. I take it you bought this used?
If the installer won't install Snow Leopard to your hard drive there are only two reasons I can think of. Either the drive simply is not formatted correctly, which is easy to fix, or the drive broken. The former being more likely.
Can you launch Disk Utility from the installation menu? When you boot into the installer, you should see a menu bar across the top of the screen, one of the options being 'Utilities'. From there, launch 'Disk Utility'. Once in Disk Utility select your drive from the left hand side and then select 'Partition' from the right hand side. Format the drive with 1 partition and format as "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)". After thats done, quit Disk Utility and continue through with installed. If the drive is working properly, it should now allow you to install Snow Leopard to it.
If you did buy it used, there is a possibility that the previous owner wiped the drive before selling and didn't format it correctly.
    Hope that helps

  • How can I get my '010 Macbook Pro to use the entire HDTV screen?

I have both my late '09 MacMini and mid-'010 Macbook Pro connected to my HDTV with HDMI cables.
The Displays pane of System Preferences on the Macmini gives me the options of 1080p and 60 hZ, which use all of the HDTV screen.
However, on the Macbook Pro I only get resolution options.
The HDTV (Sharp Aquos 46") gives me only Stretch, SuperStretch, Dot-by-Dot, and Zoom options. I use Dot-by-Dot because
the others, while the use all of the HDTV's horizontal space, cut off either the top of the display (Title Bar), the bottom (Dock), or both.
Is there any way for the Macbook Pro to use all the HDTV's "real estate" like the MacMini does?

If your MBP can use it, I highly recommend the following adapter:
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/H1824ZM/A/Moshi_Mini_DisplayPort_to_HDMI_Adapt er
I'd be very surprised if it doesn't have a capable mini DisplayPort, since my not-quite-one-year-old MBP does.  But to be sure, first make sure you've got a mini DisplayPort, then scroll down on the page above and find a user comment titled "How you know if it is supported w/o guessing."

My MacBook pro is taking forever to load. I can't login using my user name, but only as guest. When I finally make it into Guest User, it takes forever to load anything and everything. I want to know if I can still retrieve my pictures. I tried going thru iPhoto under guest user and importing the pictures. However, a red exit sign appears on all the files under that username. • What software can I get on my Macbook Pro that will be ideal for 3D movie making?

Im looking to make my own 3D animations and turn them into a mini series.
I don't want to use other games as a platform.
I guess i would like to start off from scratch, create my own people, space ships, uniforms, planetary terrain etc...
If anyone could help me out I would greatly appreciate it.

The Apple Hardware Test is all that Apple makes available.  There are third-party programs you can purchase and use, such as Disk Warrior to examine the status of the hard drive.  DW is pretty decent from my experience, but when you get into the latest of the Mac OS X versions there is so much optimization already being done by the operating system you do not necessarily gain a great deal with it.  I still keep it around, though.

  • Can't get newly purchased VMWARE to boot

An administrative system I have to access for my new job runs ONLY on Windows -- I'm required to access the system (the one that lets me get paid, no less) using IE on Windows. I reluctantly today fork over $79 to purchase VMWARE Fusion to run Windows on my MacBookPro. After some annoying false starts (when I tried to run the free 30-day trial version it insisted I buy a serial number -- not sure what's free about that trial), I installed the program and now it would appear to not boot. I tried various kinds of installation setups, but each seemed to want a Microsoft serial key. Which, apparently, is not the same as the VMWARE serial key
Dumb question: do I ALSO have buy software from Microsoft to get this up and running? I'm sorry if these seem like such basic questions, but I'm new to this idea of running Windows on a Mac. I thought once I bought the $79 package that was it. Here's the link to what I bought: http://www.vmware.com/products/fusion/
    Many thanks for any ideas . . . .

Yes, you have to buy a Mircosoft Windows license, since Fusion (and Parallels and VirtualBox and BootCamp) not have Windows included.
MAybe ask the company if they have a Windows license you can use.
    Many thanks for any ideas . . . .

  • How can I run a  purchased Acrobat Pro XI on a new laptop Win 7 with serial number problem?

    Dear Forum
I have not used this service before so if there are any protocols please let me know.  I have just bought a new Fujitsu laptop and have been trying to download my Adobe Acrobat XI Pro that I purchased for A$239.00 in 2013.  When entering the serial number I am informed that the serial number does not match the product.  I have now had three chats with customer service to no avail!  They sem to think that what I purchased was an upgrade to Acrobat XI Pro.  This seems odd to me as the product was working on the old lap top

    Hi,
