Can't get past partitioning

When I've installed Arch before, I would use gparted and set the hard drive up without having to use any of the partitioning tools on the install iso. Evidently this is no longer an option, and from what I have found so far, the instructions for the various partitioning tools are, for me at least, pretty sketchy.  I tried running "mount /dev/sda1 /mnt" after using gparted, and bash said that it was unmountable, so I had to resort to the partitioning tools.
The example for cfdisk contains a line "Choose New -> 'Primary' and enter the desired size (15.44 GB in this example) for the root (/) filesystem. The partition will be put at the beginning of the drive. Select the Type and designate it as 83 Linux. The created / partition will appear as sda1. Thereafter select "Bootable" to flag root as bootable."
I can make it as far as typing the 15.44 in, but then there seems to be no way (and no information!) as to how to enter it into bash/cfdisk. There doesn't seem to be a way to say "OK, that's what I want." I can't get a way to input, and there never appears to be a way to "Select type" or designate it, etc.  There's probably an absurdly easy step missing (or that I'm missing!), but until I find out what the magic button is, I'm hosed. All I know is that it isn't "Enter," and it isn't "Tab."
I was able to thrash my way through parted, using the instructions at http://ebalaskas.gr/wiki/archlinux/parted, but I couldn't find a way to exit parted, so I used Ctrl/Alt/Del. After rebooting, I could mount /dev/sda1, but when I do mkdir /mnt/boot I get errors saying that it can't find ext4 file system, so I know I've gummed it up somehow.
Google wasn't much help as far as using cfdisk goes, and I don't see anything that gives me a clear understanding of what I'm really doing when I tell parted what size and what partition I'm instructing it to create on my hard drive. If this is something I'm going to have to get used to, then some additional information is going to go a long way towards helping me make sense of this, and hopefully make my installation of Arch go a lot smoother and a lot quicker in the future.
Thanks.

I don't know why you thought this. The Beginners' Guide says
Absolute beginners are encouraged to use a graphical partitioning tool. GParted is a good example, run from a "live" Linux distribution such as Parted Magic, Ubuntu, Linux Mint, etc. See Partitioning for some general tips and make sure to format the partitions with a filesystem (e.g. ext4, btrfs, etc) before rebooting.
The Beginners' Guide also contains links to more information on all the partitioning tools on the install media, including a detailed manual on cfdisk:  http://www.netadmintools.com/html/8cfdisk.man.html
And one for parted: http://linux.die.net/man/8/parted
Even if you didn't see those links, the man pages for both cfdisk and parted contain all the information you needed.

That's strange; when I do a google search on using cfdisk, I get this: https://www.google.com/search?q=using+c … =firefox-a
There is plenty of information there, including another link to the online man page: http://ss64.com/bash/cfdisk.html

It's really all in the Beginners' Guide, or in a topic linked from there, or in the man pages for the tools.

  • I can't get past the grey apple screen using mavericks

I can't get past the grey apple screen trying to boot up with Mavericks. I had been using Mavericks for about a month (only had issues of freezing occasionally). I read in one of the posts here that I should try holding command R down when booting. I did now I just get a grey screen without the apple.  Any advise?
    I have a Mac Mini

    Hello ther cnickers,
It sounds like the initial install of Mavericks went ok, and you have been using it for a while, but now cannot boot to your desktop and are stuck at a gray screen with an Apple logo. I would recommend a couple of things here:
First, try performing a Safe Boot to see if that will load up for you. If so then leave Safe Boot and restart from the Apple menu to try and get to your deskop:
To start up into Safe Mode (to Safe Boot), follow these steps.
Be sure your Mac is shut down.
    Press the power button.
Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold the Shift key.
The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone, but not before the tone.
Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple logo and the progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).
After the logo appears, you should see a progress bar during startup. This indicates that your computer is performing a directory check as part of Safe Mode.
To leave Safe Mode, restart your computer without holding any keys during startup.

If that works fine, I would next also verify and repair your disk if needed.
Disk Utility 12.x: Repair a disk
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH5836
Print this help page so you can refer to it later. (You don’t have access to Disk Utility Help when you restart up your computer in the next step.)In the Disk Utility Help window, choose Print from the Action pop-up menu (looks like a gear).
Choose Apple menu > Restart. Hold down the Command (⌘) and R keys as your computer restarts. When you see a white screen with an Apple logo in the middle, you can release the keys.
Click Disk Utility, and then click Continue.
In the list at the left, select the item you want to repair. (Be sure to select an item that’s indented to the right in the list, not an item at the far left.)
    Click First Aid.
If Disk Utility tells you the disk is about to fail, back it up and replace it. You can’t repair it.
Click Repair Disk.If Disk Utility reports that the disk appears to be OK or has been repaired, you’re done. Otherwise, you may need to do one of the following steps.
If Disk Utility reports “overlapped extent allocation” errors, two or more files occupy the same space on your disk, and at least one of them is likely to be corrupted. Check each file in the list of affected files. If you can replace a file or recreate it, delete it. If it contains information you need, open it and examine its data to make sure it hasn’t been corrupted. (Most of the files in the list have aliases in a DamagedFiles folder at the top level of your disk.)
If Disk Utility can’t repair your disk or it reports “The underlying task reported failure,” try to repair the disk or partition again. If that doesn’t work, back up as much of your data as possible, reformat the disk, reinstall Mac OS X, and then restore your backed-up data.If you continue to have problems with your disk, it may be physically damaged and need to be replaced.
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.

  • Can't get past the are you over 15 screen

As a first time user I bought a season 2 pass game of thrones but can't get past screen asking if over 15 - screens keep revolving from episode 1 with highlighted play button to are you over 15.  Frustrating to say the least, hate apple tv already. Any suggestions to fix please?

    Hello Robin,
The first important thing to find out will be, if this is a hardware or a software issue.
I would first request you to run a test on the Hard drive. You can do this test from the BIOS.
    Steps:
    1: Shutdown the computer
2: Turn the computer back on and start tapping the F10 Key on the keyboard. This will allow you to enter the BIOS page
3: You will have diagnostics under which you can run a short and long test on the HDD. Run both the test and see if the test passes or fails.
4: If the test fails there is an issue with the Hard drive and the drive needs to be replaced. If the test passes then its an issue with the Software on the computer
If you have not deleated any partition on the computer or changed the operating system, you will have the HP Recovery option available
    Steps:
    1: Shutdown the computer
2: Restart the computer and keep tapping the F11 key. This will allow you to enter the HP Recovery manager page.
From here you can do a complete recovery of the computer
Note: Recovery will erase all the data on the computer.
If the recovery partition is not available, you can contact HP and request for a recovery disc

It is still asking for the four digit passcode. I tried using the one that was orgingally programed and it disables it every time. How can I get past this? I have tried to do a restore and it still takes me back to the lock screen. Please help!

I had the same problem and found a bunch of others did, too.  Unfortunately all the posts had no responses!  Anyway, I previously had my payment method linked to my paypal.  I tried changing it to my credit card and it worked.  Don't know if there's a bug with using paypal but that seemed to be the culprit for me.  Good luck!

I have always paid for apps with a credit card and now need to use an app store card but I can't get past the point where it keeps wanting my credit card updated.  And can't used the app card number.  Any advice???

I do NOT like using my credit card if I don't have to, and I went out of my way to go buy an Apple gift card, which I successfully redeemed into my Apple account. However, when I use the Apple "Cards" app, it will not let me use anything other than my credit card. I tried purchasing a card, hopefulling it would come out of my Apple store balance, but no such luck -- it came out of my credit card.

It is syncing through everything and then failing to close out. If I disconnect then the libraries are all there although I have lost a movie and a few tracks downloaded as a result of this.

  • Mac Mini Server - Can't get past...

    Mac Mini Server
I'm getting the "You are unable to log in to the user account xxx" message. I click OK, then the Apple icon appears, and that's as far as I can get.
I'm new to the Mac, and have had it running for a month. Set it up initially as "Host Name for local network."
Here is where I got into trouble. I changed it now to the 3rd item, "Host name for Internet." I entered a domain name I have, "ve3zt.ca" and I recall at the time that the computer name changed to VE3ZT from local.mini, or something similar. I rebooted and am in this position. Obviously, I made a major boo boo.
As I said, I now can't get past the Apple logo. Pressing any keys on the keyboard results in a "beep" from the Mini. That's it!
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thank You.
    Paul.

    Update:
I did the "command-R" recovery and everything went smoothly. However, the message,  "You are unable to log in to the user accound "xxxxx" at this time. Logging in to the account failed because an error occurred." Pressing OK brings up the Apple logo screen. Can only get out of this by pressing the power button on the Mini for several seconds.
    Any advice?
    Regards, Paul.

I can't get to the end of the terms of use - can't get past 24.9 to continue with the download. I'm no whizz but I'm pretty sure it's not me. Help please

    Hi denephew9999,
You need to provide more information as to what software are you trying to download, the OS you are using and the browser to download the software.
Do let me know the exact error message while downloading with possible with screenshots.
Alternatively you can try downloading it from the direct download links available at : http://prodesigntools.com/adobe-cs6-direct-download-links.html
But make sure you follow the important steps mentioned on the page before initiating the download.
