Can't get Powerbook to boot up...

I have a powerbook 15" that I purchased in 2005; I usually have it in sleep mode last and when I went to use it last night, I noticed that the light in the front wasn't flickering on and off. I tried to power it up using the on/off button, but that didn't work either, so I don't know what's going on. Can't get it to boot up no matter how long I hold the power button. Any suggestions?

Hi Emilio,
If the suggestion that you received from Philo2 doesn't solve the problem, you might try holding down the start button for ten seconds. Wait a few seconds then try to start it again.
Sometimes these PowerBooks go into deep sleep and don't respond to anything but a new startup.

  • Can't get ibook to boot from external harddrive when hitting option key

    Hello,
After owning a Pismo Powerbook that had it's hardrive replaced --twice--, i'm all about backing my shtuff up for my ibook.
I picked up a Lacie d2 external harddrive today, and used Disk Utility's Restore function to copy everything from the ibook to the drive. I can boot off the Lacie without a problem when I select it as the startup disk from sys preferences.
But I can't get it to boot from the Lacie when I depress the Option key while rebooting or starting.
    any suggestions?
    ibook g4 933   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

Let's be sure  you are doing it correctly:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears.  Select the desired boot drive (you will have to wait about 20 seconds before you can make the selection) then click on the large right arrow button.  If this is what you are doing and it does not work, then you may need to re-prep the external drive and re-clone.
    1.  Boot from your Tiger DVD. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button, then select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Set the number of partitions from the dropdown menu (use 1 partition unless you wish to make more.) Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the volume(s) mount on the Desktop.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process will take 30 minutes to an hour or more depending upon the drive size.
After the above re-clone as follows:
    1. Open Disk Utility from the Utilities folder.
    2. Select the startup volume from the left side list.
    3. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
    4. Drag the startup volume to the Source entry field.
    5. Select the backup volume from the leftside list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
    6. Check the box to Erase Destination.  Skip this step if you've already formatted the drive.
    7. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.

  • Can't get RAID to boot... simple fix?

    Hey everyone,
Just got my K8N Neo Plat with 3200 CG Clawhammer.
Got RAID set up and XP Pro SP1 installed okay, but now I can't get Windows to boot.
    FIRST BOOT DEVICE:  HARD DRIVE
    SECOND BOOT DEVICE:  FLOPPY
    THIRD BOOT DEVICE: CD-ROM
IDE RAID: ENABLED (with all appropriate ports and SATA channels as well)
When I select BOOT LIST - F11 from POST screen, I can select Hard Drive, but then it also gives me an additional menu where it displays my two Seagate Barraccuda's individually, and then my RAID.  When I select the RAID from this list, it's fine, and XP boots.  When I restart and boot normally, however, it's like it's trying to boot off of my striped drives individually, and I get "A disk-read error occurred. Press ctrl+alt+del to restart" at the IRQ/Verifiying DMI Resources screen.
I can't find this hard drive sub-menu that allows me to boot my RAID in the BIOS when I select my boot devices.  How can I fix this?
    Thanks,
    Odie

  • I have an old iMac that won't boot up anymore.  I have the OS X install disks but I can't get it to boot from these disks.  No need to save anything.  Any suggestions?

I have an old iMac.  Not sure of the operating system but the install disks say OS X.  The computer will not boot anymore and all I keep getting is to restart and when I do I keep getting the same message.  I do have the install disks but I can't get the computer to install, or for that matter, read the disks.  I would like to rebuild the computer from these disks so that I can continue to use this computer.  There is no need to save anything on the computer as I backed it up months ago.  Any suggestions as to how I can save this computer and not have to recycle it?

Really need to know what version of OS X it is currently running, and what version you are trying to install.

A bit OT, but the current rc.conf doesn't support blacklisting modules so '!snd_pcsp !pcspkr' sin't doing anything.
How did you set these interfaces up? Maybe they got mixed up on boot https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Co … vice_Names

  • TS2570 Can't get mac to boot after erase.

I have no prehiprial devices, the boot disc is in the drive, but it won't load the disc when holding "c". just gray screen and the disc drive clicks. what do i do? I can't get the disc to eject either.

To get the drive to eject. reboot while holding the mouse key down.
Did the DVD drive work normally, prior to erasing the hard drive? If so, is the OS X DVD (the original gray-faced OS X disk that came with the macine or a black-faced retail disk) visibly damaged? Are you trying to boot the second DVD instead of the first one (if the gray-faced one)?

  • Qosmio F60-14K - Can't get it to boot from the SSD

    Hi
Im trying to install a new SSD disk, but cant, because I cant get it to boot from the SSD, "Insert a system start disk" Works fine as a USB, even installed Windows 7 on it and tried to boot from it but with out any luck.
All I havent tried are to switch between IDE/AHCI, but that because I dont have that option in BIOS. I think I have tried everything I can test, any tips/help would be much appreciated!!
And so to the BIOS part a joke to call bios all you can do change clock settings and the bootorder more or less!
    Anywhy to get more options?
    thx
    //Henrik

I installed it on my desktop cuz I couldnt install win7 when it was in the laptop it said it wasant a start partision, but it didnt help since it didnt boot from it even with the OS installed on the disk.
Since I cant boot from the ssd it dosent matter what I install on it.
Yeah aslong as u dont want to change anything the set bios seams ok but not as soon as you want to change anything like in my case.
something I really really miss is the fan speed control and ofc the acpi and maybe some chipset settings.
but aslong as I get my SSD to work Im more then happy with the bios settings ;)

  • Can;t get past the boot screen (formerly, "I'm having a keyboard problem")

    Hello there,
This is my first post on this forum, and I'm here to ask for some help with my first build.  The main problem at this point is that after I power on the system, it goes to the Platinum screen and says "press <Tab> to enter Post, or <Del> to enter setup" but neither of these, nor any key on the keyboard will respond.
I have not installed the OS yet, since I can't get to the Bios to do anything else.
I hope I included enough info on my signiture.  Let me know if you need anymore info.

PS  I changed the title of this thread, from "I'm having keyboard problems"  since I think that was misleading, and not the real issue

    Hello e,
Good to see you up and running. Good luck loading up your operating system.
The reason I wanted you to get your SATA drive connected to your motherboard SATA 3 connector is just that sata 1/2 connectors are unlocked. There is no way around it. SATA 3/4 connectors are locked and will give you better reliability and flexivility later on.
Updating your power supply may not be a bad idea if you got the cash. You have only 18 Amps on your 12 volts rail which is quite a bit lower than the recommended 24 Amps on 12 Volts for high end system such as yours.  Use the one you have for now and see if it can get you into Windows running everything that you want and then make a decision. With no OCing you may be able to seak by if you get decent electrical power from your utility company.  Your system voltage and stability once running will let you know.
    Have fun,
Yep, got the OS up and running (it wasn't recognizing the hard drives at first, since I had strung up the wiring real nice, and neglected to plug in the power to them!  D'oh!) But that was easy to fix.
Got the card reader loaded now, so everythings in place.
But, I think the power supply is an issue and will get a bigger one.  The message I get says there's not enough power for the video card, so to keep my hardware safe from damage, it is only running within my available power.  That's good for now, while I load my AV, and other programs, but I'm going to the store to buy that power supply...Do you think the above one I posted is worth a shot?  It seemed a better solution then the one I have in the case...
Oh, one more thing, what does Locked and Unlocked mean, with SATA 1/2 and SATA 3/4?  I'll switch them when I put in the new PS, but just wondered what that meant.
Hey, thanks a bunch.  This has been fun, and you've been a big help.

Exelent housing, sleeving; alot of plugs and exelent cooling. 12.8V in the 12V rail, making my system unstable. I tested with a multimiter also, and when I adjusted the rheobus to low, the voltage of the 12V rail went up to 12V. and when I turn the rheobus all the way up, I got 12.2V ..... I returned.
doesn't sound so hot, tolerance is usually +/-5% giving a range of 12.6v - 11.4v 12.8v is therefore outside this range.
However a QUALITY power supply only becomes recognised as such with usage, it comes down to your choice, are you willing to be a pioneer.

  • How can I get Powerbook G4/867Mhz/OS X 10.2.3 to start up?

Hi! My powerbook will not boot up. I need to get my recent data from HD
    Stalls on blinking question mark.
Restarting from original install/restore CD results in a "restart " message.
Hardware test says error in mass storage error code 2STF/1/4
Restart from Diskwarrior 3.0 also results in a "restart" message
opening startup manager shows only the start up CD or Diskwarrior (if inserted in combo drive). starting up through start up manager results in the apple logo, rolling circle, then two lines appear across screen made up of dots and lines, and freeze.
reset PRAM does not help. can here the chimes but ends at the flashing question mark eventually.
opening firmware mode does not help. again ends at the flashing question mark.
connecting to another powerbook G4, imac, G5, using firewire 400 cable to open HD in firewire target mode does not work.
    batteries are good.
I don't know what else I can do.
I do not have a apple repair shop anywhere near me.
    Any ideas?
    thanks

I tried to reset password using another OS 10.2.3 installation CD but it didnt boot up with it.
I don't understand why not. Your computer originally shipped with Mac OS X 10.2.1 and Mac OS 9.2.2, and later with Mac OS X 10.2.3 and Mac OS 9.2.2. The only thing I can think of is that since you are now running Panther it will not boot the older system, although that should not matter.
I would like to reset the original password. I do not want to lose any applications already installed.
If you do not have any data that you need to save, and all you are concerned about is the applications, you can follow the procedure outlined in Niel's post Making the Setup Assistant reappear. You will then set up a new admin account, then log into the new account and go to Apple Menu > System Preferences > Accounts and delete the old accounts.

  • Many Problems: Flashing Folder at Boot and Can't get drives to boot dvds

another flashing folder post....i've looked thru many of them but can't seem to find a fix for my problem.
I just got a powerbook g4 15" 1.25ghz from a friend. it didn't have the factory discs but i had a copy of 10.4.6 from an old ebay purchase. i tried to load it (holding down c at start) i get a blank grey screen for a sec or 2 then it goes to the flashing folder (face finder/question mark). i thought maybe the disc was bad since its been scratched a few times so a friend made me a copy of some old 10.2 cds and they do the same thing.
So i thought maybe it was the superdrive so i hooked up my external dvd drive via firewire 400. i tried the cmd/opt/shift/del to boot from firewire and got nothing and then used the startup manager and never got it to bring up either disc from the superdrive or the external drive.
So i don't know what the problem could be..
    Any help is GREATLY appreciated.

just found this out...i need the actual powerbook install cds...haha oops...well suse is installing fine on it now

  • How can I get it to boot??

My 12" PB has a probably about completely full HD. I need to start it up and clean it out, but it's not booting - it gets to the grey startup screen (with the apple on it) and the circle spins for half an hour and then it gives me the 'your computer must be restarted' screen with the message in several languages.
I'd use the disc utility, but I can't find my original disc!!!
Any suggestions? I've tried to start in single user mode to use the fsck tool, but it won't start that way.

    Welcome To  Discussions Rebecca!
"My 12" PB has a probably about completely full HD."
This situation could indeed cause a Kernel Panic.
You need to make some additional space available.
Do you have a recent backup of the system?
If not, you should try to retrieve as much critical data as possible.
If you have access to another Firewire enabled Mac, you could use Firewire Target Disk Mode, to attempt a back up.
If you are not able to startup the Mac, it will be difficult to resolve the Kernel Panic.
You also need to find or replace the system install discs.

  • How can I get Windows 7 Boot Camp to find my Magic Mouse?

    Hey!
So I just bought a Magic Mouse and it works flawlessly in OS X.
But when I use Windows 7 Boot Camp I can't find the mouse to add it as a new device. My bluetooth works just fine and I have the Boot Camp 3.3 drivers.
I tried rebooting, turning the mouse off and on, read a bunch of guides on the internet but no one is having issues CONNECTING the mouse, only getting it to work, so my research is proving to be hard.
    Can you guys help me?
    Thanks!

    Hi Maia,
Can you please mention your MAC model (MBA 2011, MBP, iMac?). Which OS X version?. Have you problems pairing other bluetooth devices?
You may want to try the following setps.
1.- First make sure that you have the latest EFI and software updates. Including latest bootcamp bluetooth drivers.
2.- Unpair MM in Mac OSX
3.- Do a Nvram and SMC reset:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1379
    4.- Restart
5.- Pair your MM under Mac OSX
6.- Boot on Bootcamp assiging bootcamp as a starting partition
    7.- Add your device.
Let me know if that worked, there are another tricks you can try but I need additional information.

  • I would like to get rid of an old iBook, but when I plug it in, I can't get it to boot up at all.

I have an old iBook Power PC G3 that I would like to recycle.  However, many years ago I dropped it and the logic board was damaged. It will boot up for a couple of seconds, then go to sleep or shut down.  I can't tell.  I think I may have some information on there that I need to get rid of before I send it off to recycling.
I'd like to wipe the hard drive and get it recycled. Help!
    Beth

If you hadn't found some ideas online of how to open the old G3 iBook model
there are a few that may help, depending on which model you actually have,
in sites such as iFixit.com https://www.ifixit.com/Device/iBook_G3
Since there were early models in color, and later ones in white, more than
one kind of hardware build example exists under the name iBook G3...
To open it and remove the hard disk drive, as suggested, to access it by a
universal hard drive wire kit (those have their own power supply too) is a
great idea. If nothing else, you could otherwise dispose of the hard drive
and not be too concerned of someone else accessing your personal info.
A destructive method could be used to make the moving parts inside not
accessible to most usual means. I've seen what a big hammer could do.
Hopefully someone may want the remainder of your old iBook G3 for fun
or to look at in wonder, it may not be ready for the trash just yet.
    Good luck & happy computing!
