Can't get printer utility to launch

My HP DeskJet 6840 is haing printing issues, seems as though the heads are not aligned. Problem is I can't get the utility to open up. Went into printer set-up utility and selsected the printer from the list. But the utility button is grayed out. Can't click on it. Same is true for the printer que box. I am connecting to the printer through the airport, so maybe that has somethign to do with it?

I have an HP deskjet 5850, had it connected wireless to an old snow Airport, replaced recently with Extreme, using USB to connect the printer, prints fine, cannot get the print utility to work even when connected direct using USB to my iBook G3, running 10.4.10. Downloaded HP 7.2.1 drivers, installed but utility is still greyed out. Any other way to gauge ink levels?

  • Can't get disk utility to work with leopard - iBook running super slow

I have an iBook G4 and it's running ssuuppeerr slow but I can't get disk utility to come up after I press C down. I don't know if I'm pressing it at the wrong time but I restart with the C pressed and it gets to the apple screen and it won't go anywhere else. It will restart normally but not with the C key. I've been trying for an hour and I can't get it to get to disk utility!
    Any help is greatly appreciated!
    Thanks

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
Do you want Disk Utility on your iBook or do you want Disk Utility on your install disc?
For Disk Utility on your iBook, go to Finder>Applications>Utilities and look in the Utilities folder. You will find Disk Utility there, and drag it to your dock where it will be handy to have it.
For Disk Utility on your install disc, insert the install disc and then restart and hold down "C" as you boot up so that you will boot from the install disc. Then choose your language, and then look for Disk Utility in the menu bar--I don't remember if it says "Utilities" or "Disk Utility". If you need to repair your startup disk (i.e. your internal hard drive), you would boot up from the install disc to do this.
However, I am wondering if you have enough RAM to run Leopard. You will get a big boost in performance if you max out your RAM. Leopard will run best if you can put a 1 GB RAM stick in your RAM slot.
If you want to repair permissions after installing and updating Leopard, you can do this with Disk Utility on your iBook. Repair permissions until there is nothing left to repair.
If you have more questions, please post back. Also, which ibook G4 do you have?
    Good luck!

  • _X11TransSocketINETConnect: Can't get address for /tmp/launch-lxMumo/

I use the X11-based consed package for DNA sequence assembly. It worked fine on my old G4. When I switched over to a MacBook, with 10.5, I tested it and it seemed OK, but after updating to 10.5.1, when I try to launch the program, I get the following error:
    _X11TransSocketINETConnect: Can't get address for /tmp/launch-lxMumo/
    Error: Can't open display: /tmp/launch-lxMumo/:0
Other programs requiring an X-window display seem to work fine. My usual technique (Googling the error message) did not even find the term "lxMumo".
Does anyone know what this means?
    thanks ,

    looked in the directory /tmp/launch-lxMumo
and there is only one file, "", which appears to be empty:

I have just added a Time capsule to my BT Home hub network just to back up all the different computers in the house wirelessly. Since adding it I can not get my HP Officejet J4680 to print wirelessly. Any ideas anyone?

My airport address is 192.168.1.254 my printers IP was originally 169.254.24.167 but I changed it to 192.168.1.76.
Launch AirPort Utility and put the Time Capsule into "manual setup" mode. Pull down the "Base Station" menu and select "Logs and Statistics". Select the "Wireless Client" tab. Do you see the printer there? (If you have trouble identifying the clients you see there, enter their "MAC addresses" in this Web site

It would be good to configure your printer to be a DHCP client, but it's not clear from its manual

  • PG G4 struggling, can't get disk utility to start....

Any time i start itunes, or system preferences my computer just gives me the spinning beach ball for quite a time. Sometimes the app will launch, other times it won't. When i try to force quite applications, half the time it won't shut the app down..
with that said, i'm trying to get disk utility to go and see if there are any issues there, but it won't launch.
Would starting in 'safe mode' work in this task? How would a start my computer in 'safe mode'...
    anyother suggestions are appreciated

You can start in safe mode by rebooting and holding the shift key down.
There are several possibilities. As already mentioned, your hard drive could be dying. However, first I would want to know how much free disk space you have. You want 10%-15% free space available for the operating system.
Running the Apple hardware test would be a good diagnostic. Insert the original OS X disk that says 'AHT Version x.x' in small print on the label. Reboot holding the option key down, choose the Apple hardware test, and when prompted choose the extended test. Does that tell you anything?
To boot from the first OS X disk, hold the C key while rebooting. Then you can run Disk Utility and repair the disk and repair permissions, while you're at it.
The beach ball can occur for a number of reasons. If your hard drive checks out OK during the Apple hardware test, and you have enough free space, you might want to run OnyX, which is available from http://www.titanium.free.fr/pgs/english/apps.html. Run the cleaning and maintenance tasks, and see if you still have issues.

  • OS 10.3.9 - Can't run printer utility for Epson 1520

My ink jets are clogged, but I can't run the printer utility. It's grayed out in the print monitor and I can't click on it. I had the same problem a few months ago and downloaded a driver someone recommended. It worked, but it was a trial version and started printing logos on everything after 30 days. So I uninstalled it. Ideally, I need a free printer driver. Or if not, another trial version will get me by for now.
    Thanks

Have you tried downloading and installing the latest Epson driver? The Epson driver should include a printer utility.

I was using the Gnome cups manager on Ubuntu, but I cannot find this package on my system now. I see it in AUR but shouldn't it be in pacman? I have searched and searched but can't find it. And I installed gtklp, but upon startup it just gives me "No printers found!" and exits.
EDIT: I have just built gnome-cups-manager from AUR and am at the point where I select a driver, however in the Manufacturer list there is nothing showing, and when I hit Install Driver and select the .ppd I got from the CUPS site for my printer, it just says "The PPD    /usr/share/cups/model/Lexmark-X125-drv_x125.ppd is already installed"  I can't get past this point??

    on xp box
    1) install and start lpd daemon (done)
    2) set printer sharing (short name, no spaces) (done)
    3) make sure that xp allows tcp 515 (done?)
    on linux
    1) start cups
    2) open konqueror (not firefox) and enter in the address bar
    http://localhost:631/
log in as root (I assume that basic cups with user is configured)
    3)select add printer
    - first page:set priter description
    - second page: Select device lpd/lpr host or printer
    - third page enter lpd://hostname/queue (hostname if defined in /etc/hosts, otherwise ip address of XP box queue -> printer share name
    - fourth page select manufacturer
    -fifthpage driver
    test it
    KDE
    K Menu -> Settings ->Printers ->Add -> follow screens
I found KDE method (under Arch) more reliable, but both should work. No idea about Gnome.

  • How can I get Print to PDF to accept oversized page sizes?

To level set, my platform is Mac OSX 10.6,  Snow Leopard.
I sometimes create banners and such that are designed to be plotted/printed on large format printers.  For example, a banner might print to a page that is 12" x 72".
Now, I don't actually own such a printer, the FedEx Kinko's down the street does, hence I don't have a driver installed for it.
I really don't know the "best" tool for creating these drawings. I have tried MS PowerPoint (which can't seem to accept paper wider than 56 inches) and have  used NeoOffice Draw, which  seems to work ok until it comes to printing time.
When I try to print to PDF, which is what the folks at Kinko's want, the printer systems always asks if I want to rescale the print to fit my 8-1/2 X 11 home printer(s).  No, just print it "as-is" is NOT a choice and neither is "Any Printer".   I end up having to crawl through setting up odd sized paper under "Any Printer" and somehow, I still don't really understand how, the print to PDF now saves the file sized to print as drawn.
So, I can see a few possible approaches to making this easier.
Install the print driver for the printer at Kinko's.  Only, I don't think the installation process will allow that unless the printer is connected.
Develop a dongle that fools the Mac into thinking the printer is attached.  Cute idea that could make money if I sold them, but hardly reasonable.
Develop a dummy (virtual?) print driver that can be added without a physical printer having to be present and which opens a window when you "print" to it that allows you to specify the page size and other information with which it will "lie" to the OS and say, "Yes,  I am a printer capable of doing this....".  (FYI, I am a programmer going on 30 years now.)
So, before I teach myself Objective-C and how to use Xcode, is there a better or known solution?  Is there an existing product I can use?  Is there a driver development kit for virtual printers?  Any chance I could get a C++ kit and not have to learn Objective-C?
    Thanks!

Incorrect. Win or Mac, you can install a printer driver w/o the printer being connected.

You're using the wrong tools. PP shouldn't even be in consideration; I don't know about NeoOffice, but I tried its cousin LibreOffice, and it has issues with custom paper sizes; which is not surprising, given what these apps were designed for.
What you need for actual banners (not web page banners) is a vector drawing tool or a DTP app. I'd say Illustrator or InDesign, but Adobe CS is expensive, and, if you're thinking of PowerPoint for this job, you're not ready for it.
You can try Pages; although not quite DTP, it can do the job and it's inexpensive. There are other options, such as Swift Publisher (a DTP app) or Intaglio (a drawing app) -- both are more expensive than Pages, but still affordable; or you can go open source with Scribus (DTP) or InkScape (vector; requires X11). You already know the ups and downs of using open source. (These are just examples; you can find others if you look for them.)
Although it's better to have Kinko's printer driver, to make sure of the correct options, you don't actually need it to print to PDF. You should be able to define a custom page size (eg, 12in × 72in) and create the PDF from it. Any app which uses the Mac OS X standard print function should be able to do it.

  • I can't get my software to launch

I'd appreciate your help with this please.
In short, I can't get my Itunes software to start up, either by double clicking the icon, right clicking the icon and using the Open command, or using the Run command from the Start bar. When I do any of these it gives me the impression its going to get going for a second or two, but then nothing happens.
The only time it started properly for at least the last 2 weeks was when I first did an upgrade, then a few days later a comprehensive uninstall, then full re-install. On both occasions the software started automatically with no problem the first time, but after that, nothing. Connecting my Ipod (a Nano about 18 months old) doesn't help, it just sits there giving the 'do not disconnect' message.
Any Ideas how to solve this would be great. Many thanks in advance

Before you start though, it's worth checking to see if Quicktime launches OK becuase iTunes can't work without it.

  • Help - using windows 7 and bonjour and can't get printer to work!

Hi, I recently upgraded my wife's pc.  Previously I had a wireless printer set up using bonjour and the airport express.  My mac and the old pc (windows xp).  I had no problems printing.  I upgraded her PC and now it uses windows 7.  I installed bonjour and tried to print but no success.  The PC can see the printer.  It says that it sends the file to print.  I get no printer error or anything on the PC, but nothing happens.   Anyone have a suggestion?
    Thanks
    Kris

    on xp box
    1) install and start lpd daemon (done)
    2) set printer sharing (short name, no spaces) (done)
    3) make sure that xp allows tcp 515 (done?)
    on linux
    1) start cups
    2) open konqueror (not firefox) and enter in the address bar
    http://localhost:631/
log in as root (I assume that basic cups with user is configured)
    3)select add printer
    - first page:set priter description
    - second page: Select device lpd/lpr host or printer
    - third page enter lpd://hostname/queue (hostname if defined in /etc/hosts, otherwise ip address of XP box queue -> printer share name
    - fourth page select manufacturer
    -fifthpage driver
    test it
    KDE
    K Menu -> Settings ->Printers ->Add -> follow screens
I found KDE method (under Arch) more reliable, but both should work. No idea about Gnome.

  • Can't get printer to connect to computers

I have an HP Photosmart 5512 all-in-one printer and I"m trying to get it to connnect to my computers in my home. I have a HP 2000 laptop running windows 7. I have tried all the trouble shooting software the company provides, I have unplugged and waited on router and printer. I uninstalled and reinstalled software on computer and printer. I have tried everything the company site has to offer to get this printer connected. I have even called the customer support and they won't help me even though I"m using their products, because its been a couple of years. So if there are any techs on here who know anything about this, please help.  I'm about ready to throw it out the window. Its new, I only used it once a couple of years ago and put it back in the box. Now I need it for college and I can't get it to connect. Help Please.
