Can't get rid of Bing

I’m running Firefox 3.5.4 with XP Home.
The Bing Web page pops up whenever I enter just part of a web page name, i.e. “Netflex” gets Bing page with all the different sites with the word “Netflex”. I looked in Add/Remove and the subcategories of Add-ons and do not find an entry for either Bing or Search Bar. I ran a file search for “bing” and found “bing.xml” in Documents and Settings\Owner\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\fkmiryyl.default\fkmiryy\default\search plugins. I moved bing.xml into My Documents but Bing still comes up. How can I get rid of Bing?

What does "no luck" mean? What specifically did you have difficulty with?
Having Bing hijack your search engine is actually a very direct symptom of having the InstallMac adware on your machine. InstallMac is a variant of Genieo, so you should be able to solve this problem by carefully and methodically following those removal instructions.

  • I can't get rid of Bing from my home page, how do I do this?

Without being aware of it I downloaded Bing, I got rid of it as a toolbar but now every time I turn on my computer instead of getting Comcast as my home page I get a picture with the Bing logo and a Bing search site. Hoe do I get rid of this ? I can't even find my downloads for some reason>

Same thing happened to me at the weekend. After removing, uninstalling, restarting etc I FINALLY found this answer and it worked

I already hated Microsoft, but there's no way I'm using Bing now.

  • Can't change my homepage and can't get rid of bing search bar.

I can't change my homepage. It changed to Bing when I downloaded something. There is also a bing search bar on the top of my page. I am furious. I don't want things deciding on their own what should be on my computer. Why is it so hard to find where to change the homepage or get rid of these toolbars? How can I do it? Your help page doesn't help at all. It leads me to nothing useful. This seems to have affected my computer's performance as well.

I get this message too. Every time I try to download an app I get a message saying there are 33 apps that can not be downloaded and to try again later. The app I am trying to download does download but I get 'ghost' icons of the others. It doesn't make any sense why the app store is telling me I can't download apps I have already downloaded previously.
This all started when I entered my ID wrong. The only way to get rid of the ghost icons is to tap them. Otherwise they stay there waiting for the download.
I can't get this error message to go away. It must be a new bug.

  • I've had Firefox forever. But I hate Bing. I've uninstalled firefox 3 times but Bing installs along with it. If I can't get rid of Bing, then Firefox has to go

There is no trace of Bing in any program or default. Is Firefox loading it onto my computer? How can I keep Firefox but get rid of the Bing?

I removed the Bing toolbar immediately, and I removed it as a default search engine. But it stayed as the default for when a tab is opened. I uninstalled Firefox but Bing came with Firefox every time. Has Firefox partnered with Bing in a way that Bing is part of the package? I hate Bing and will remove Firefox if it includes Bing

If you are getting Bing when you click on new tab try this: Type '''about:config''' into the address bar, press Enter, accept the warning, scroll down to '''browser.newtab.url''' and make sure 'Value' is set to '''about:newtab''' (right click to change it if necessary).

  • I can't get rid of "bing" from opening in new tabs. How can I get a blank page to open as in the past?

Up until yesterday, I could open a new tab with a blank page. Now, every new tab opens to a bing search page and focus is in the search box. Very annoying when I begin to type a URL and have to click in the URL to continue typing. How do I get back to a blank page opening?

Thanks. You did have to go through another step-"Extensions", to find the Icon for the StartNow Toolbar with Bing involved.
Yep tried it and it got rid of Bing!! Happy Happy

  • I can't get rid of bing in the search bar

How can I get my default search engine back to google?  Everything I put into the search bar gets searched with bing as the search engine.

You may have installed the "Genieo" or "InstallMac" ad-injection malware. Follow the instructions on this Apple Support page to remove it.
Back up all data before making any changes.
Besides the files listed in the linked support article, you may also need to remove this file in the same way:
    ~/Library/LaunchAgents/com.genieo.completer.ltvbit.plist
If there are other items with a name that includes "Genieo" or "genieo" alongside any of those you find, remove them as well.
One of the steps in the article is to remove malicious Safari extensions. Do the equivalent in the Chrome and Firefox browsers, if you use either of those. If Safari crashes on launch, skip that step and come back to it after you've done everything else.
If you don't find any of the files or extensions listed, or if removing them doesn't stop the ad injection, then you may have one of the other kinds of adware covered by the support article. Follow the rest of the instructions in the article.
Make sure you don't repeat the mistake that led you to install the malware. Chances are you got it from an Internet cesspit such as "Softonic" or "CNET Download." Never visit either of those sites again. You might also have downloaded it from an ad in a page on some other site. The ad would probably have included a large green button labeled "Download" or "Download Now" in white letters. The button is designed to confuse people who intend to download something else on the same page. If you ever download a file that isn't obviously what you expected, delete it immediately.
In the Security & Privacy pane of System Preferences, select the General tab. The radio button marked Anywhere  should not be selected. If it is, click the lock icon to unlock the settings, then select one of the other buttons. After that, don't ignore a warning that you are about to run or install an application from an unknown developer.
Still in System Preferences, open the App Store or Software Update pane and check the box marked
Install system data files and security updates
    if it's not already checked.

  • Firefox on Mac, now Bing search has replaced Google and I can't get rid of Bing- how?

Bing has mysteriously replaced Google and pops up in new tabs, etc. I have tried to change this, but Bing pesists. I don't want it, I didn't ask for it (intentionally, anyway) - how do I get rid of it?

Hi first of all, I mean that I have a bad English.
I've had the same problem as you and it seems I've solved.
What I have done is, first uninstall an add-on called conduit firefox engine.
Second, in the address bar you have to put about: config. And find all strings that say "search.conduit"and put the option to reset.
I solved it for me the problem, I hope you serve.
    Greetings

  • Bing is loading before my Homepage. How can I get rid of Bing?

Just today Bing began to load when I started FireFox before my homepage. I've looked around for Bing on my computer and can't find it. What did I do today you ask...well I did load two programs...which I have since removed. Still stuck with Bing. I've checked add-ons and extensions, looked for anything new in the programs list on the control panel...
    I'm stuck here folks....Help!....Please.

Does the same unwanted page appear when you open a new window (Ctrl+n) or click the Home icon or press Alt+Home on the keyboard?
    '''If Yes:'''
    * Double-check that your home page setting has changed. These articles describe the steps for that:
** [[Startup, home page and download settings]]
** [[How to set the home page]]
    * If your home page setting is correct, one of your extensions may be overriding your setting. Open the Add-ons page using either:
    ** Ctrl+Shift+a
    ** "3-bar" menu button (or Tools menu) > Add-ons
In the left column, click Extensions. Then, if in doubt, disable, or if obvoiusly bad, remove. Often a link will appear above at least one disabled extension to restart Firefox. You can complete your work on the tab and click one of the links as the last step.
    '''If No:'''
If the problem only occurs when using your Firefox shortcut/icon, it could be hacked. Right-click it > Properties > Shortcut tab. The "Target" for 32-bit Windows 7 should be this (no more, no less):
    "C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe"
If anything else following that, try removing it.

  • Bing has highjacked my yahoo search, I can't get rid of Bing

A couple of days ago I had to redo my computer's system and when I downloaded Firefox and set my home pages it started with yahoo search as ISP is AT&T. Then all of a sudden Bing took over as my search engine. For a day or so I could not use anything but Bing, and then I was able to get a list on the search toolbar and was able to remove it from there, But now if I type something in the navegation toolbar it uses bing.

  • I click firefox and get BING--want to get rid of Bing--How

How can I get rid of BING? Don't want it-won't use it. If this problem doesn't go away I will return to E.

    Hi sprice,
Are you saying that when you load Firefox, you get Bing as your homepage? If so, you should take a look at the Knowledge Base article [[How to set the home page]].
There are steps in that article to reset your homepage preferences to default. I would try that first to clear out any strangeness. If that works, you can try setting your homepage again to your personal preference.
If your default search has been changed as well, just look at the [[Search bar]] article. It will show you how to change the default search to any provider you like.
    Hopefully this helps!

  • Each time I open an email the Bing ad covers the screen and although I've changed my Search preference I can't get rid of it. How???

This began happening, every time I opened my email, several months ago. I changed the Bing search preference to Google and it disappeared. It appeared again 2 days ago. I again replaced the Bing search preference with Google, but still the Bing ad covers my email every time I open it in Firefox. I would like to get rid of Bing permanently.

    Can you post a screenshot?

  • I set my home page to my school website, but everytime I open firefox it opens to a conduit search Bing website how can I get rid of that a nd lock in my home p

I set and want my home page to be my school website, "northbranch.k12.mn.us" I have gone to option and set it as my home page. Everytime I start up the computer and start up firefox, i get a conduit search engine with Bing. How can I get rid of this permanently and have my school website come up as the stratup window?

hello tomterrimort, if your manual changes don't 'stick' after a restart of the browser, please look out for any suspicious extensions (like 3rd-party-toolbars or things you have not installed intentionally) presently installed under '''firefox/tools > addons > extensions''' or the programs section of the windows control panel and remove those entries.
in case this doesn't solve the issue please try this: go to firefox > help > troubleshooting information > profile folder - "show folder", then a new window will open up. in this window look out for a file named '''user.js''' (it might be used to overwrite your custom settings). in case it is present , delete or rename this file and restart firefox afterwards.

  • "Updated" search bar with Bing search appeared in Tabs today & I can't get rid of it!

PROBLEM SOLVED! This is so embarrassing, but here's what fixed it. I'll leave the question here in case others download the add-on and can't figure out why it's doing what it's doing, but if a mod wants to delete the question I won't mind.
Anyhow, I right clicked on exactly the right spot on the bar and chose Delete, which brought up the add-on tab, which showed an add-on called "Default Tab," restarted Firefox, and now both behaviors are gone--no more search window in the tab bar, and no more search box in new tabs. I must have thought Default Tabs sounded cool, but didn't expect it to do what it did.
    <nowiki>********************************************************************************</nowiki>
Sometime between Friday and this morning a new search box¬ appeared in Firefox that called itself the “Updated Search Bar” until I tried it the first time. I’d like to avoid resetting Firefox, but if that’s the only way to fix this I guess I’ll have to. All suggestions are welcome.
The box looks much like the default search box except that it has a big orange button on the right saying "Search." It’s located in the tab bar, next to the last tab, taking up valuable real estate if I have more than 4 or 5 tabs open, which I often do. The default “search” is Bing, the other options are things like Facebook and Twitter, and it has no option to manage search engines. It doesn’t appear in my extensions or plugins, and I can’t find information about it anywhere.
BTW, my old search box is still in the navigation bar, and although I haven’t been able to get rid of Bing for the “search” search, I’ve made DuckDuckGo the default by moving it to the top of the list.
    Thanks for reading!

    PROBLEM SOLVED (see above)
Oh, and now if I open a new tab it has a Bing search bar. Grr!
