Can't get rid of time machine desktop icon

Some how I've managed to get a time machine icon on my desktop even though I don't have time machine configured to run. The icon is a blue hard drive with the time machine symbol on it and has the label Drew1 under it. If I control click on it it brings up the option list for the desktop. If I "command I" clcik on the icon it shows the information for the desktop. I can't eject it and I can't drag it to the trash bin. How did this icon get on the desktop since I didn't enable time machine and how do I clear this icon from the desktop?

Very odd, indeed. I don't know where to suggest you go from here other than the extreme of reinstalling OS X.
Reinstall OS X without erasing the drive
Do the following:
1. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
2. Reinstall Snow Leopard
If the drive is OK then quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed with reinstalling OS X.  Note that the Snow Leopard installer will not erase your drive or disturb your files.  After installing a fresh copy of OS X the installer will move your Home folder, third-party applications, support items, and network preferences into the newly installed system.
Download and install the Combo Updater for the version you prefer from support.apple.com/downloads/.

Can't get access in Time Machine to certain folders for any date earlier than current date/time, even when entering as Admin. Why do certain folders have small red "-" badge in lower right corner of folder icon?  Here's a picture of the dilemma:
I've tried monkeying with priveleges using Command I, and changing users, but to no avail.  Can anyone help?

Right.  Here's what the permissions look like from the Finder Command I:
I'm not sure what "Custom" means, but when I then try to change it to "Read & Write", it doesn't take.... just comes back as Custom. Welcome to Apple Support Communities! So it sounds like the same type of thing is happening to both iTunes and iCloud. Check out the following iTunes article and see if that resolves the issue with both services:

  • Opps! Can't get rid of stuff on desktop!

I accidently moved over 1500 photos from iphoto to the desktop. Upon realizing what I did I couldn't stop it so I forced a shut down. Restarting found the desktop GONE but it was only hidden and all the photos were there. The problem is that I can't get rid of them. They won't go into the trash because I get the message.."Some of the items you are moving are in use by another application. Moving the items can cause problems with the application using them. Are you sure you want to move these items?"
I have tried to "continue" to no avail. I've tried trashing all the photo and trashing just one. I've tried to open one or two and can't. I tried to put them on a DVD but I can't.
Also the icon for my HD is missing but the LaCie external shows up and when i open it I can access the main drive but the desktop icon is either hidden someplace or gone.
Please someone tell me what to do to fix this mess and why can you just quit a accidental move like that and avoid such a problem in the 1st place?

Here's something you can try. Hopefully all the image files have the same extension: .jpg.
Open the Terminal application in your Utilities folder. At the terminal prompt enter or paste the following: (Press RETURN after each command.)
    cd Desktop
    rm -rf *.jpg
Now, hopefully this will delete all the image files on the Desktop. If some remain it will likely be because they have a different extension than .jpg. You may need to repeat the "rm -rf *.ext" command replacing "ext" with the actual file extensions.

  • Can I get rid of the MobileMe sync icon in Mountain Lion?

I recently set up a new MacBook Pro by using setup assistant to restore from a Time Machine backup of an old Snow Leopard machine. In general it's worked fine, but I still seem to have the old MobileMe sync icon in the menu bar, and as far as I can work out it's now totally functionless. MobileMe no longer exists, and there's no longer any MobileMe preferences screen to turn it off. Clicking on it just shows a message saying 'no devices syncing'. Does it serve any useful purpose in Mountain Lion, and if not, how can I get rid of it?

That works! Thanks. Does it serve any useful purpose in Mountain Lion that I'm missing, or is it just a stub that somehow didn't get removed?
    Does nothing at all now.

  • Can't get rid of an app's icon from the menu bar (the app is already deleted)

i deleted an app the old fashion way (1st drag it to the trash and 2nd empty trash). That App was Logmein. The problem is that now i have logmein's icon at my desktop's menu bar and can't get rid of it. Please help

You didn't delete all the application, of course.  (There was an uninstaller, but I guess it's gone now.)  You could try a search with command F for all Logmein stuff, make sure to include system files in your search.  Maybe have a look in /Library/Application Support .

  • My Macbook Pro will not boot up.  How can I get to the time machine back up?

When I turn on my Macbook Pro, it gets to the gray screen with the Apple logo and the spinning beach ball and stays there.  I use Time Machine with a Seagate external harddrive to back up my files.  I at first thought recovery meant using Seagates's Replica software, so I followed the instructions, inserting the recovery CD and booting up to the C drive.  The Seagate tecnical support person informed me that I was in error and that because I was using Time Machine, the Replica recovery CD would not be useful to me.  Now I have two problems.  I can't boot up, and I can't get the Replica CD out of the C drive.  So I have several questions.  How do I remove the CD?  There doesn't appear to be a place to use the old paper clip method.  Once I've removed the CD, how do I reinstall the OS?  I don't seem to have a hard copy of Mavericks that should have come with this laptop.

    historyrocks wrote:

Restart, hold the mouse button down as it boots, it should be ejected.

Lets take this step by step…
Once the disk is ejected see if 10.9 can boot normally.
If that fails let us know what happened.
Power off & disconnect your Time Machine disk and any other external disks just for now (so we know it is safe & not causing this issue).
Reboot & hold alt - it will take you into the 'boot picker' it will list all available boot disks. Make a note of how many disks appear and what the names are - let us know here.
You could try picking the 'recovery partition' if available. That should eventually show you a screen where you can select Disk Utility in the list of options…
In Disk Utility select the 'boot disk' – this is usually the item above 'Macintosh HD' (or whatever your boot disk is called).
    Select the 'First Aid' tab
Repair any disk damage that is reported via 'verify'. Then select the 'Macintosh HD' & repair the permissions too.
    Recovery mode explained…
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4718
If you have no recovery partition you can use 'Internet recovery mode' (Command+Option+R at startup) - this downloads enough to repair & install 10.9. Try to use an ethernet connection for the internet - it can be many times faster & more stable than wifi.
Once that completes reboot, hold alt & select your main boot disk (maybe Macintosh HD) if it is available.
The recovery partition can also be used to download & install 10.9.3. However you should probably see what state the Mac's boot disk is in. It's possible that erasing & reinstalling is the only option. If you go down this route you can restore the Time Machine backup, but it's better to see if it can be fixed first.

  • I lost bookmarks in upgrade to Yosemite. How can I get them from Time Machine backup?

When I upgraded to Yosemite, I lost all of my bookmarks in Safari on my MacBook Air, iPhone 6, and 2nd or 3rd generation iPad. I tried to retrieve them by going into my backups in Time Machine, and I could not restore from the Time Machine back up of Safari. Help me to know what I can do?

  • Can't get rid of drive on desktop

Ever since I installed Windows 7 using Boot Camp I have had a drive icon on my Snow Leopard desktop, which contains 2 files - AutoUnattend.xml and BootCamp3.1.64-bit.exe - and a 'drivers' folder. Should it be there? I have tried ejecting and moving to Trash, at which point it vanishes, but it's back again on boot-up. The Windows 7 installation instructions did not lead me to expect that I would have a permanent desktop icon. Grateful for any advice.

    Hi and welcome to Discussions,
no, these files should not be permanent.
Do a 'Get Information' (right-click on them or Command-I key-combo) on these files/folder, are they residing on your Windows 7 partition ?
If so, thn OSX can not delete them, since OSX can not write/delete on NTFS Windows partitions.
Try finding and deleting them while in Windows 7
    Hope it helps
    Stefan

  • Need advice (help!) Can I get files from Time Machine to a PC

My Mac book's HD I think is dead. I have an external HD with Time Machine back ups on it. I really NEED to get my address book contacts off and onto my back up PC, for right now. Is there even a way to do that?? and while Im at it what about iTunes library?
Please tell me there is a way.

    Chad,
I must disagree with Nerowolf on this one. You should be able to get the items you need off the drive, even connected to a PC.
Contrary to what Nerowolf believes, Time Machine stores backups as standard, complete files; it does not make "incremental" backups in the traditional sense. Each and every backup includes every file from the source, and each one is a complete file.
The trick with Time Machine is that the data associated with those many, many files is only copied to the drive once, and each "iteration" of the same file links to that single copy of the data. The process whereby this occurs is called "multiple hard links," and the resultant files are called "multi-linked files."
You need not be concerned with all this. The important point is that the files are seen as normal files to you and to the OS.
The real problem, however, is that those files are stored on a volume formatted as HFS+, and Windows cannot normally access this file system. If you attempt to connect your Time Machine drive to a PC, it will want to format it. If you really need to access the drive, you'll need something like MacDrive, a PC utility that allows Windows to mount and access HFS+ volumes. Look for it on Versiontracker.com (in order to use it, you'll need to pay for it).
CAVEAT: I do not know with certainty that MacDrive includes compatibility with Multi-linked files. Multi-linking is part and parcel of the HFS+ file system format, so there may be no problem, but you might want to double-check to make sure Multi-linked files are fully supported in MacDrive.

  • How can I get rid of that row of icons below the bookmarks, which has Startnow on the left and Twitter on the right?

I sought help among the available articles. I was informed that right clicking on a vacant part of the toolbar would give me the option to delete or hide it. Doesn't seem to work with this one. In fact, right clicking anywhere on this row isn't working. If I right click the "startnow" icon, it takes me to that page. I really don't want this toolbar, as it wastes my desk space. How do I get rid of it?

Do you see that toolbar in View > Toolbars or Firefox > Options if the menu bar is hidden?

Use a compressed image type like PNG or JPG to save the screenshot and make sure that you do not exceed the maximum file size (1 MB).

  • Can I get rid of the battery-like icon in the locbar?

With a few websites a gray icon that looks like a car battery appears at the left end of my locbar, followed by the "more than" sign (>). I'm told that this means that an element on the page uses a plug-in—although I can't find any pertinent documentation. If what I'm told is correct, I can't see any use for this icon. My questions are:
    1. Of what use is this icon? and
    2. Is there any way of getting rid of it?

Usually, the Troubleshooter add-on in Firefox (built-in I believe) will try to grab your troubleshooting information. It's a green button that shows before you post your question. I'm not sure how the Ask a Question process works anymore since it's been re-worked previously but I'm sure Tyler would know more.
Checking the box "Needs more information" basically is asking the OP or anybody else for more information. For example, I can click the "Needs more info" and it'll add a 'tag' for needing more info. Once the info requested has been provided, you can clear it by clicking the checkbox again. It'll say something different. (I think it says "I'm providing the requested information.)
You can copy/paste the Troubleshooting Information manually by following the directions below:
*Navigate to <code>about:support</code> via Address Bar
*Click the button that says <code>Copy text to clipboard</code>
*Now, go back to your forum post and click inside the reply box. Press Ctrl+V to paste all the information you copied into the forum post.
