Can't get started with Airport Express;  WPA2 problem?

Howdy,
I purchased an airport express about a month ago and am unable to get it set up, at all. My goal is what the setup guide calls "Using AirPort Express on an existing wireless network and stream music to powered speakers" (pg. 15 for those who have the book). The failure is that Airport Admin Utility doesn't recognize my third party wireless network.
My wireless hub is a linksys wireless-G cable gateway, and has been in use with multiple computers in the current setup for a couple years. It is setup with WPA2 personal, TKIP+AES encryption, and MAC access list enabled. SSID broadcast is currently enabled.
I am running OSX10.4.11 on the computer that I am using to attempt to configure this.
Following the instructions for "Connecting to an Existing Wireless Network" (pg 25), I am attempting to use Airport Utility. But there is no such program on my computer, so I am assuming that Airport Admin Utility is what the book refers to as Airport Utility. Airport Admin Utility presents a "window titled Select Base Station" but lists no base stations. I click "Other", provide the IP address and password, hit OK, and ... nothing happens. After 20 seconds the beachball appears, and after another 20 seconds it says "The airport admin utility was unable to read the configuration of the selected base station".
The IP address I used is the one that I enter into the web browser to access the linksys box (no secret here, 192.168.0.1). The password is the one used to access those settings (e.g., the linksys default is "admin", but I changed it). I know the IP address and password are correct, but I do not know if this is the IP address and password the program is asking for. I don't even know if I am running the correct program!
Thanks for any help,
Bob H

Actually, I have it working now.
What I did after posting my last message was I connected the AE to my wireless hub, via ethernet cable. Then Airport Utility was able to find it, initialize it, and load new firmware into it ("it" being the AE). During initialization stage I told it it would be connecting wirelessly to an existing wireless network, and I gave it the network name, security options and password.
Then I told the wireless hub to allow this device (MAC address = Airport ID), disconnected the ethernet cable, power-cycled the wireless hub, and relaunched Airport Utility. It saw the AE, so I quit that. Then I launched iTunes and selected my AE as the speakers. It told me I needed to enable iTunes Music Sharing in my firewall. After doing that, iTunes is now playing through my external speakers. Exactly what I want.
Now I just need to go set this up on my laptop, with the AE and speakers on the other side of the house where I want 'em.
As a recap, I think I basically had two problems, both related to documentation. First, the program that the Setup Guide tells me to use wasn't in my Tiger applications folder, and I was fooled by a program with a similar name (in the past I have seen such name changes between what the setup guide said I should use and what I really needed to use). Second, it wasn't clear to me that, regardless of how I wanted to configure things for usage, I needed to establish a valid wired connection to the AE to initialize it. I think that could be made clearer in the book.
Thanks for everyone's help.

  • Can't even get started with airport extreme

I have 2 windows vista computers on a Dlink router to a cable modem provided by my ISP. All of this is on the second floor of my house.
I want to be able to play airtunes via airport express downstairs with my stereo speakers. I could never get airport express to do this alone so I went to a retail store and was told by the MAC salesman I needed an Airport Extreme.
I tried connecting my airport extreme via ethernet cable to my router and got a flashing amber light. I followed the instructions but now airport utility will not even recognize the airport extreme not to mention that I haven't even been able to add the airport express.
I basically need help from step 1 as well as an overview of how I will be doing this.
    Thanks

Hello cturnerlewis. Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
To be able to stream via AirTunes to the AirPort Express Base Station (AX) downstairs the AX just need to join an existing wireless network. If you current D-Link router is wireless, then the AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBS) was NOT necessary. However, I will assume that it is not.
What you will want to do, in a nutshell, is the following two things:
    1. Set up a wireless network with the AEBS, and
    2. Configure the AX to join the AEBS's wireless network.
Here are the basic steps for both ...
Step 1: 802.11n AirPort Extreme Base Station Setup (AEBSn) w/Cable Modem
Perform a "hard" reset of the AEBSn.
    o (ref: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107451)
    Modem/Router Power ReCycling
o Power-off the Cable modem, AEBSn, & computer(s); Wait at least 30 minutes.
o Power-on the Cable modem; Wait at least 15 minutes.
o Power-on the AEBSn; Wait at least 5 minutes.
    o Power-on the computer(s)
    Setup the AEBSn
Either connect to the AEBSn's wireless network or, temporarily, connect your computer directly (using an Ethernet cable) to one of the LAN ports of the AEBSn, and then, using the AirPort Utility in Manual Mode, check these settings:
    AirPort - Base Station
o Base Station Name: <whatever you wish or use the default>
    o Base Station Password: (optional)
    o Contact: (optional)
    o Location: (optional)
    o Set time automatically (optional)
    o Time Zone: <select your time zone>
o Status Light: Always On (Default)
o Allow configuration over Ethernet WAN port (unchecked)
o Advertise configuration globally using Bonjour (unchecked)
    AirPort - Wireless
o Wireless Mode: Create a wireless network
o Network Name: <whatever you wish or use the default>
o Allow this network to be extended (unchecked)
    o Radio Mode: 802.11n (802.11b/g compatible)
    o Channel: Automatic
    o Wireless Security: None
    Internet - Internet Connection
    o Connect Using: Ethernet
    o Configure IPv4: Using DHCP
    o IP Address: <provided by your ISP>
    o Subnet Mask: <provided by your ISP>
    o Router Address: <provided by your ISP>
    o DNS Server(s): <provided by your ISP>
    o Domain Name: <provided by your ISP>
    o DHCP Client ID: (optional)
o Ethernet WAN Port: Automatic (Default)
o Connection Sharing: Share a public IP address
Once you have verified Internet access, I strongly suggest that you use wireless encryption (WPA or WPA2) to secure your network.
Step 2: AirPort Express Base Station (AX) - AirTunes Setup
Perform a "factory default" reset of the AX
    o (ref: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=108044)
Either connect to the AX's wireless network or connect directly, using an Ethernet cable, to the Ethernet port of the AX, and then using the AirPort Utility in "Manual Setup" mode, make the following changes:
    AirPort > Wireless
o Wireless Mode: Join a wireless network
    o Network Name: <existing AEBSn's wireless network>
o Wireless Security: <select the encryption type of the existing wireless network>
o Wireless Password: <enter the existing wireless network password>
o Verify Password: <re-enter the existing wireless network password>
    Music
    o Enable AirTunes (checked)
o iTunes Speaker Name: <enter desired speaker name>
    o iTunes Speaker Password: (optional)
    o Verify Password: (optional)
o Click Update to write the new settings to the AX
    In iTunes:
    iTunes > Preferences... > Advanced > General
o Look for remote speakers connected with AirTunes (checked)

  • Can't extend network with Airport Express on Sky Broadband

    Hello,
I'm having some difficulty that's driving me bananas!
I've recently moved house and got Sky Broadband. They sent me their Sagemcom router and the setup was easy. I thought I'd do what I always do. I'll connect my Time Machine to it via ethernet, and connect via Time Machine's network. Then I have two Airport Expresses in the house to extend the network and use Airplay etc.
I can set up the Expresses with no problem, everything talks to everything without a problem and the lights are all green  but the network isn't getting extended with either of them. I refuse to believe they're both broken as I also borrowed an Express form my Dad's house (which extend the network without a problem) and it doesn't work with me.
Extend my network is checked in the Manual Setup in Airport Utility but for the life of me I can't get my network extended.
I have done tests where I replaced Time Machine and made one of the Expresses the main base station and it throws signal out easily like that but I can't extend that network with the second Express.
I followed this thread https://discussions.apple.com/message/13171691?messageID=13171691 and have tried a few things to no avail. Currently I have configured an old Airport Extreme (just to keep testing) which works great and have set up an Express wirelessly. All lights are green and the settings seem to all be correct. I turn wifi off on my computer and connect to my computer from the Express using ethernet and nothing. Should I get a connection like this?
Is it Sky? I have read in a few places that Sky have disabled the ability to extend their network but I'm not eve using the signal from their box.
Any ideas or thoughts will be gratefully received.
    Thanks in advance.

OK so I've been tying it out but unfortunately to no success. Everything looks fine and all lights are green but the network isn't getting extended - just as before.
    Click the Wireless tab
Wireless Mode = Extend a wireless network
Wireless Network Name = Same name as the Time Capsule network
Check Mark next to Allow Wireless Clients
I don't have an option to extend a network, only to join: http://flic.kr/p/a222kR
I do get the option though if I use the guided setup, even though it doesn't work: http://flic.kr/p/a24TQQ
I did try one other thing though. I set up the Time Capsule and it works great. Then I tried instead, to use my Airport Extreme to extend the network. The Extreme did give me an option to extend the network in the drop down menu and a checkbox to Allow Wireless Clients, unlike the Express. I do believe that this is now working. I now need to find the best place to put it to extend the range.
My Expresses are only 802.11g so they're pretty old but as I said, it worked at my Dad's house but not here. Does it make a difference that the Airport Base Station at my Dad's house is an older UFO shaped Snow Airport? I'm becoming suspicious that seeing as I've only ever lived in small houses and apartments that maybe they never worked?? I've recently moved into a more spacious house so could this be the problem?
One final test using iStumbler showed that it could see Apple Network XXXXxX until I configured it. Once it was configured it disappeared from iStumbler. The Airport ID number had gone from the list.
Do I need newer n compatible Airport Expresses then? So many questions pop up now... When I turned my Express into the base station (which only throws out a g network) then surely I should be able to extend to the next Express (which is also g only)? It still didn't work. The Express are on version 6.3 by the way. Having the Extreme extend the network is a good start but I also need the others to work too. Do you think I'm correct in my assumption?
How about WDS, could that work? Will WDS slow the network considerably?
Sorry if this message is rather long and garbled and again, thanks for your interest and advice.

  • How to get started with airport in berlin

    hi,
after reading your posts its clear i am WAY out of my depth here. please suffer me kindly. my question is a simple one.
i bought a macbook a few weeks ago and here i am in berlin for the next 6 months trying to go wireless and havent a clue what my first step is. i never went wireless in the states. obviously if this were the US i wouldnt be posting here but not one of my friends here is wireless and even fewer have macs.
if there are any german and or berlin based users in the house please holler back.
this must sound like somebody asking how to light a match, huh...
    .stew

    Imbiss,
    I'll try again.
in order to connect to the internet, you will need an ISP. The connection comes usually on a cable, into a modem (frequently provided by the ISP). if this modem allows you to connect wireless, then fine. if not, you need to by a "bridge" or a router, e.g. the Airport Express. You then plug the ethernet cable from the modem to tghe AE. then you configure the AE to form a network, using "Airport Administration Utility" (you find this in Applications/Utilities).
From you posts i take that you you don't have your own network. You are sitting (I assume) at home, and your MB sees a few networks. In order to connect to them, you need a password. You cna get this only by asking the owner of the network in question.
If you are sitting at a school, university or compagny etc which has their own wireless network, also there the network administrator can give you the password.
Please, post back and state what your situation is: private at home? seeing the networks of your neighbours? Do you have an Internet Service provider (ISP)? What modem do you have?

  • Can't get started with Reports

How do I run 9iAS Reports (Sun Solaris 8)? I am thoroughly lost and confused.
I've installed 9iDS and am able to start up the jdeveloper. How do I get going
with Reports? Do I need 9i Database to be installed? Can I use 8i Database?
I have 8.1.7.3.0 of the Database and 1.0.2.2.0 of the 9iAS installed.
When I try 9iDS/bin/rwbuilder or rwserver, it says that I'm missing
    the reports.sh file.
I've spent half a day looking for this kind of information - pleas help!

  • Can I do this with airport express?

We have a LAN (3 pc's wired connected) and a wireless router for serving an iphone and a laptop (wireless) This router (not an Apple router) is also an ADSL modem and is wired connected to our LAN providing internet.
We have another computer with only ethernet port (not wireless) in another room. Is it possible to connect this pc to an airport express via ethernet, and make it join our network? How we can call this? Client mode, bridge mode, extend our wireless network?
OR we must have an apple airport extreme to do this (as the main router?)

The wireless usb adapter, can connect directly to the main wireless router...
Yes, that's correct. You could always use the old Express for streaming AirTunes if you wanted, or connect a printer to the USB port to allow multiple devices to use the same printer over the network.
If you travel regularly, and the hotel has an available ethernet port, you can setup your own wireless network in the room and usually connect multiple devices.
Finally, if you don't want the Express, I would be happy to take it off your hands

  • HT204057 How can I back up with AirPort Express? I have a flash memory.

I want to back up my Mental case 2  information. How can I do it with my AirPort Express?

Sorry, but the USB port on the AirPort Express does not support storage devices, and thus, cannot be used as a destination for backups. For Apple products you would need to use either the AirPort Extreme or Time Capsule for this purpose.

  • ITunes 7 Can't Access AirTunes with Airport Express

After upgrading to iTunes 7 I can't no longer play music through my Airport Express. It worked fine in iTunes 6. It shows up in the pull-down menu, but I can't select it.
On another machine that already had my APE selected, I now get a message "None of the selected remote speakers could be found on your network. Please configure your network settings and AirTunes configuration..."
    Any ideas??

You have to make sure IPv6 is turned on in the Network System Preference panel. System Preferences -> Network -> Airport -> TCP/IP -> Configure IPv6 -> Automatically.

  • G3 Lombard - Can't get started with anything except OS 8.6.

    Hi,
I just bought a used Mac Bronze keyboard (Lombard). It was working great until i fixed it. (Yikes) By fixing it i mean I installed my software OS 9, and some other things that work on my 3400c. The Lombard didn't like that (OS 9.0) and wouldn't start. The Lombard Only boots with OS 8.6. After confirming that the CD reader was working fine. My Lombard would not start up with the OS 9 CD. (Flashing folder and question mark) Hmmmm Very strange. It also wouldn't go into SCSI hard disc mode. So I put the hard drive in my Mac 3400c and it worked fine. Hard disc mode and everything. While in Hard Disk Mode on the 3400c i put the OS 8.6 system and the finder back into the same folder and started up my Lombard. Perfect. It worked great. NOT leaving well enough alone I used the Norton disc utils on the hard drive. It fixed a few things and said it couldn't fix this last thing (i hit ok too quick to read what it couldn't fix). It also wouldn't start with the hard drive from the 3400c. (OS 9) Or even the hard drive from my Blue and white also OS 9. Any ideas?

OK i took the 8.6 system folder off the hard drive and replaced it with the 9.0 system folder.
Sorry, but I still don't understand clearly where an OS 9 System Folder came from, if you weren't able to start the Lombard with the installer disc. So which of these did you do:
Did you boot the 3400 to the installer disc, with the Lombard connected in SCSI Disk Mode, and then run the installer to install OS 9 onto the Lombard's hard drive? If so, the installation was tailored to the hardware of the 3400, because it was the host computer. That installation would be no more appropriate to boot the Lombard than the OS on the 3400's own hard drive is — and you know (now that you've tried it) that the 3400's drive doesn't boot the Lombard. In SCSI disk mode, the installer has no idea that the target disk is even part of another computer, never mind any information about the rest of that computer's hardware configuration. All it sees is the disk, and it assumes that that disk will be used to boot the host computer — exactly as if it were inside the host computer.
    OR
Did you simply copy the System Folder from the installer disk (without actually running the installer) to the Lombard via SCSI Disk Mode? That wouldn't work either: the SF on an installer disk is only bootable when it resides on that disk. A copy of it moved elsewhere will rarely if ever boot any Mac.
    OR
What other possibility is there? I can't think of another, but maybe you did. If so, what was it?

  • Can't get my original airport express to connect to new network

I have an original airport express and just changed to a new comcast xfinity router. Airport utility now doesn't see the airport express. Have tried the reset button and still the new network doesn't see it. Am I gonna have to buy a new airport?

Similar situation.  Want to use an existing Airport Express on a new network.  I did the factory reset.  Saw the 4 fast green blinks, and it's now slow-blinking gold.  AirPort Utility, however, doesn't see any other Wi-Fi devices.  "No remote AirPort Stations discovered."  The AE is about 10 feet away from my Time Capsule.  My MacBookPro is within 2 feet of the AE and connected to the Time Capsule network.
    What next?

  • I downloaded software updates and now I can't get online with airport

    Hello!
This morning, I got asked by my software update on my Mac (which automatically asks me every week) to install some software updates. I stupidly did not think much about it and clicked ok.
The software updates that I installed were:
    1.) Java for Mac OS X 10.3, Update 5 version 5.0
    2.) Quicktime version 7.1.6
    3.) Security Update 2007-005 version 1.0
    4.) Security Update 2007-006 version 1.0
Now I cannot connect to the airport. Everyone else around me is fine. The airport icon in the top right corner shows 4 bars. When I go into Network Status, it says that the AirPort is turned on but is not connected to the internet with a yellow dot next to it.
I went into keychain access and under access control, I noticed that the box was checked next to "confirm before allowing access". However, whenever I try to connect to the internet either via Firefox or Safari, there is no pop up that asks me to confirm. Also, I tried to change the settings in Keychain Access, I changed the setting to "Allow all applications to access this item" and when I click save changes, I get the color wheel of death and the program is listed as not responding.
When I try to enter the WEP 40/128-bit hex password, it either says the computer cannot connect to this network or I get the spinning color wheel and nothing happens and I have to restart the computer.
Does anyone have any suggestions? Perhaps I can uninstall whatever I installed or I need to reconfigure the IP address (I have no idea how to do this)
Thank you so much for your help!! It is much appreciated.

First, try repairing permissions. It's often recommended to be done both before AND after installing software updates.
Find Disk Utilities in the Utilities folder (on the Applications folder). Launch it and, in the left-hand pane, single-click your boot volume (if you have multiple volumes/drives/partitions on you hard drive). A "Repair Permissions" button is under the main window. Click it and let the program work.
If that doesn't work, post back.

  • Can't get started with Metrowerks on Win98

I am having trouble writing anything more than a trivial program using the Metrowerks IDE on Win98. I have asked for help on the Metrowerks newsgroup but there appears to be a lack of expertise.
If I attempt to go in through the low level interface, creating the java code myself, the code compiles cleanly and creates a .jar file, but when I attempt to execute my class I get a class not found error message.
On the other hand if I try to go in through the high level interface, where the GUI creates the source code based upon my dragging and dropping components onto the screen, I lack control of exactly what is generated, and in any event the entire process craps out when I try to save the code.
I have been trying this with the 1.1.6 level of java which came with the Metrowerks compiler. I am in the process of downloading the 1.3 level.
I would appreciate it if somebody would tell me what I am supposed to do to actually compile and execute java programs in this environment, because this is creating a complete block to my learning java.

    Jcobban,
What version of CodeWarrior are you using? Only version 6 and 7 will support JDK 1.3.
There should be a version of a JDK on the disk, install that one.
Let me know if you need any other help!
    Cheers,
    Chris
