Can't get terminal on Sun Enterprise 220R

Hi folks, wondering if you can help me.
I recently acquired an Enterprise 220R on the 2nd hand market. I am assured (reliably) that it was working fine before it was disconnected from its previous home, where it was accessed via a console server.
I, however, cannot get a terminal on it. I have tried using 9600-8-n-1 ANSI with no flow control in HyperTerminal COM17, as well as several other combinations, and nothing. Cable setup is as follows:
XP Laptop - USB 232 adaptor - 232-RJ45 adaptor - standard ethernet cable - DB25-RJ45 adaptor - Terminal A on the 220R.
I am able successfully raise a terminal on my Sun Fire V100 immediately using the same adaptor and same HyperTerm settings, in the following cable config:
XP Laptop - USB 232 adaptor - 232-RJ45 adaptor - standard ethernet cable - A LOM on V100.
That tells me:
- that I am using the correct COM port
- that the USB-serial adaptor is working
- that the serial-RJ45 adaptor is working
- that hyperterm is configured correctly
SO: I have tried both straight through and crossover cables on the E220R with no success. I have tried different baud rates, different terminal settings, nothing. both ethernet cables have been tested with a cable tester.
The system is keyed to the power on/off position. Both PSUs are connected and there is no maintenance light.
What am I doing wrong? I assume it's something to do with either Hyperterm settings or my ethernet cable/connector pinouts? I can crimp cables in any configuration if I know what that configuration is. The DB25-RJ45 adaptor came with the box on Serial A so I assume it's the correct one.
Please help as this box needs to be used in production ASAP.
Many thanks
Cheers James

So the exact wiring of the two adapters you are relevant. This sequence can create either a "straight through", or a "null modem", or something completely different.
You must have a "null modem" setup for this to work, because both the XP and the Sun have DTE wired serial ports.

That's not useful for serial hookups. A serial "rollover" cable could be useful in some cases, but an ethernet crossover cable won't work well.

I think it's the final adapter. You can view the serial connections on this page. If you know the pinouts of that final adapter, you can construct the correct cable:

  • Sun Enterprise 220R to Dell Poweredge 2161 DS-2 KVM

    Hi there,
I have a some Sun Enterprise 220R servers with graphics card and one 8 miniDIN female socket for Keyboard/mouse - I would like to connect this machine to a Dell Poweredge 2161 DS-2 KVM for remote control.
The solution I have come up with is as follows - If anyone has used this solution or similiar, can you let me know if it worked or not please?
    Sun 8 miniDIN Female socket -> USB-SUN-R -> SIP (USB & VGA to RJ45) -> RJ45 Cable to KVM
VGA Connector -> -> SIP (USB & VGA to RJ45) -> RJ45 Cable to KVM
NOTE: the SIP cable in the above layout is the one cable - Its just easier to lay it out as above - same for the RJ45 cable
I would be only using one USB connection on the output of the USB-SUN-R device
Any suggestion greatly received - Maybe there is something easier than i have envisaged
    Thanks

    Hi Carol,
I think my suggestion on this would be to use Content Aware with Color Adaptation turned on.

  • Installed firefox 31 and now I can't get to our oracle enterprise manager 12c URL

    Hi,
On Monday, I upgraded to Firefox 31 and now I cannot connect to our Oracle Enterprise Manager Cloud Control Web site. I get the following error message:
    Secure Connection Failed
An error occurred during a connection to lmoemxs101q.atl2.dc.sita.aero:7799. Issuer certificate is invalid. (Error code: sec_error_ca_cert_invalid)
The page you are trying to view cannot be shown because the authenticity of the received data could not be verified.
Please contact the website owners to inform them of this problem. Alternatively, use the command found in the help menu to report this broken site.
I am not sure what to do to get rid of this message. I need to use OEM to monitor our Oracle databases and I am no longer able to do this.
    Please help.
    Thanks,
    Roya

Thanks. I made the parameter change yesterday and now I can get to OEM and monitor our Oracle databases. I sent the workaround to my fellow DBA's in our office, as they all had the same issue with Firefox 31.
You mentioned that this the "insecure workaround" and should be used temporarily. How unsecure is it, and is the a better workaround being worked on?
    Thanks,
    Roya

  • Where can i get details about sun.nio.ch.SocketChannelImpl?

i have tried in java.sun.com.... i couldn't get it. Any info on what does that SocketChannelImpl class do will be very helpful..... Any links where i can get to see some sample programs on this will help me understand this very well....
    Please help me....
    Thanks in advanve....

What it does is what it is specified to do in java.nio.channels and java.nio.channels.spi as an implementation of java.nio.channels.SocketChannel. You don't need to know any more than that.

  • I can't get terminal to run under 10.3.9...

I have 2 iBooks (a G3 & a G4) running 10.3.9 ... In both of these, when I attempt to open the Applications/Utilities/Terminal program, I get what looks like a window opening... but nothing further happens... the Terminal does not start up. I'm logged in as the admin (via a short name). The Terminal program version number is indicated as 1.4.6. Am I missing something obvious here? What's the secret to opening a terminal window?

OK!!! Where do I send my $ contribution?!? You ought to have a Paypal button over here... your insights were worth at least $5... ok, ok... $10...ha-ha!!
Your suggestion to do the Finder File/Find revealed that I had another instance of the Terminal program in an odd folder (I then recalled creating some time ago). The icon of this instance was the black rectangle (this instance works correctly)... the icon of the other instance (that doesn't work) is the generic "artists palette"...
I'm not an expert in the OSX gui, and I apparently goofed at an earlier time when I attempted to move the terminal program out of it's default location into the esoteric folder (I now recall this was intentional to thwart discovery of this too-important program in its too-predictable location). My admin approach to things has since matured a bit... rather than hiding the terminal (and console) windows in odd locations... It's wiser (though not easier) to create new non-admin users...
I'm still perplexed by the behavior of the OS/gui here: What's going on with the existence of this odd ghost like terminal program "placeholder" in the usual/expected location of Applications/Utilities/Terminal?... other than the generic icon (that I didn't pay close enough attention to), all other signs were that this was a legitimate program file (so indicated by the info tab)...
Is there a correct and an incorrect (my apparent) way of moving programs like Terminal?
Thanks for your patience with my userland mis-steps here... I owe you!!
    Billy B.

  • Where can I get Oracle 7.3 Enterprise Edition for trial?

My potential employer is using Oracle 7.3. I am 8i DBA but never use 7.3. So I hope I can get the software to learn.

If you are familiar with 8i then you don't need a 7.3.

    - Intermedia
    - bugs

What is causing the problem and how do I bootup ?

    Hello Eric,
issue BREAK (this depends on the terminal emulation used: Tera Term ALT+B, Hyperterm CTRL+BREAK ?) to get to the ok-prompt.
Check the current settings of diag-switch? and boot-device.
<b>printenv</b> (displays all settings) or a certain setting
    <b>printenv diag-switch?
    printenv boot-device
    printenv diag-device
    printenv auto-boot?</b>
If <b>diag-switch? true</b> the system tries to boot from net !
    <b>setenv auto-boot? false </b> disables automatic bootup
When you power-on the system, it's now stops at the ok-prompt.
Are there any disks installed ?
    <b>probe-scsi-all</b>
Try to boot from a Solaris CD and review the disk layout with <b>format</b>.
    <b>setenv diag-switch? false</b> disable diagnostics
    <b>setenv diag-device disk</b>

  • Enterprise 220R is down and no remote/local access seems possible...urgent

My ass is grass here if I can't get this fixed shortly...
I had to bring down our Sun Enterprise 220R and now cannot get the thing to boot with services running, can only ping the box.
    1. I understand solaris boxes don't boot and instead bring up this Forth OBP menu. Any way to bypass this without having access to the box via telnet/etc.?
    2. I have connected a serial cable to both port A (db-25) and port B with no sucess on a Windows laptop running HyperTerminal @ 9600-n-8-1. Doing this same thing to another sun box works fine. On the 220R nothing happens in window. All seems dead.
I am desperate to get this thing booting and will face serious wrath if it isn't done shortly. Naturally we have no video card in box or keyboard for access.
    Help is desperately needed...

Does it have an rsc card? If so, the OBP params are changed to redirect I/O to the card. I had this happen on one of my 280Rs. I had to power the machine down, then power it up. While it is powering up watch the amber maintenance light (the small wrench) on the front. When it flashes, press the power buton twice. This boots the machine up in default OBP params allowing serial port access. Be sure to have your hyper/tera term inplace before you do this. Also, sounds like machine is booting in Single User, replying to pings but no telnet nor ftp etc. Could have a nice fsck waiting for you.

  • Trying to make changes in Terminal but can't get past the password request

I am trying to run Piano Wizard from a managed accout but I get this: Data.pwf missing
I found these FIX instructions on their web site but I can't get it to work....
METHOD1: If you know the password of the owner account of the machine. Please follow only these instructions. The changes outlined below will modify only the Piano Wizard files.
Terminal: (These instructions are for a standard install with the game installed to Applications) refers to the user account that owns the machine – you will have to know the name of this admin user (i.e. bob)
    1. Launch Terminal (Applications->Utilities->Terminal)
    2. "cd /Applications"
    3. "su "
    4. enter the password and hit enter
    5. "chmod -R 755 Piano Wizard.app/"
We are now done - close Terminal by hit COMMAND-Q (Apple-Q) That's it - launch Piano Wizard
    When I launch Terminal I get - "computer name":~"admin name"$, I follow steps 1-3 not problem...
I get to step #4, put in my password then I get this "su: Sorry"
Please help, I only know of one password...is there another one somewhere?
    MacBook   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

    Run the following command:
    chmod -R 755 Piano\ Wizard.app
Spaces and other special characters need to be escaped when entering commands into the Terminal; this can be done by putting a backslash in front of them, or enclosing some or all of the string in quote marks:
    chmod -R 755 'Piano Wizard.app'
