Can't Get the Battery to Charge on a Dell Inspiron 2200

After installing Arch on an old Dell Inspiron that was running WinXP the battery stopped charging. The power adapter and jack that commonly fail on Dells are both okay. I'm running XFCE4, shows 5% battery left. I don't think XFCE4 is misreporting how much charge the battery has because if I unplug the power source it reports battery critically low.
acpi -i shows:
Battery 0: Unknown, 5%
Battery 0: design capacity 4400mAh, last full capacity 4122 mAh = 93%
When I first noticed this I didn't think it could be software related, but then did a search and found that a few other archers had reported the same problem. BIOS shows a healthy battery. I tried one archer's suggestion to allow the battery charge in BIOS for a few minutes. If it's an arch setup issue, the battery would show that it's charging after several minutes. So it sat there for about 20 minutes and did not increase from a 5% charge. The battery is not bad, like I said, it was charging consitently when running WinXP a few days ago.

They use different chargers. You can see the Inspiron in the image below that there's no center pin, and it was charging with WinXP, which is why I think it's an Arch issue. Perhaps there's a kernel module that needs to be loaded that will fix the issue? IDK, but I don't think it's hardware related. The charger tip does seem a bit worn though.

    Hi WG!
    Thanks for posting.
There is a sliding lock switch on the battery door that needs to be slid to one side as you also push the battery door out.  Please ensure you are doing both at the same time, otherwise the battery door remains locked.

  • How can I get the ipad to charge on my usb. I have a 2.0 and still not showing it charges.

I have  a laptop with a 2.0 usb.  I have an ipad and can't get it to charge on the laptop.  I called apple and they said I need a firmware update. How do I do this and will that work? Help, thanks

    Hi,
Because the iPad requires more power than from a normal USB port can supply therefore you can not charge an iPad using ONE USB port on a laptop/PC.  Please try this free utility, many HP users say it works:

  • How can I get the battery level of a connected Bluetooth device on my iPhone 4S?

My Bluetooth device is the Merkury Hexagon Bluetooth speaker, I want to know how to get the its battery level, In the manual, it says there: "Speaker battery indicator will show right on your media device (iOS support only)
    Additional details:
    - I have the latest iOS
    - Not jailbroken
    - The speaker doesn't have a "battery indicator" on it

this is not a build in part of any bluetooth profiles so to get that feature one needs third party software from the maker of the bluetooth device installed on the device in question
so maybe you should look for apps made for mercury hexagon in app store?

  • Can I get the battery replaced in my 3GS?

My 3 year old iPhone 3GS can no longer make it through an 8 hour day. I'm going to replace it with an upcoming new model in October. In the mean time, can the Apple Store replace it ?

Apple offers a battery replacement for $79, plus $6.95 shipping, subject to local tax. Apple disposes of your battery in an environmentally friendly manner.

  • Can you disable the battery or not allow it to charge even if it is pluged in?

Can you disable the battery or charging function even if the laptop is pluged in to a power outlet? Is there any internal switch?

Your battery will remain healthy - and discharge a bit - even when you're plugged into mains. If you're going to run primarily of mains, you should disconnect your MBP about every two weeks and allow it to drain down to about 30-40% and then allow it to recharge - this will keep the ions in the battery 'moving'.
Most of the time you just needn't worry about the battery - just use it thoughtfully.

Connect the AC charge to the system. Battery will charge to 100%.
But it is very bad to drain the battery to Zero. So don't make a habit of doing that.

Same thing here. Try putting the brightness down all the way (its hard to see at first but you will get used to it) and one more thing is that close all you open apps. So to do that you have to click the home button twice (after you put your passcode in) and you will see some apps in the bottom. Hold it until there is a red - sign. click all of them so they go away. This does not delete your apps it just makes your ipod better.

  • HT4060 tried everything and can't get my ipad to charge...how do you reset it if battery is complety dead?

tried everything and can't get my ipad to charge.  How do you reset IPad when battery is completly dead?  charger and cable works fine on IPhone.

First make sure you are using the charger that came with your iPad and plug that into a known good wall outlet. Let your iPad remain on the charger for at least an hour. It may take that long before it responds if the battery is completely dead. If using the charger that came with your iPad there are several reasons it may fail to charge.
Bad outlet. Make sure the Utsler has power.
Bad charger. Try a different charger.
Bad cable. Try a different cable.
Dirt in the connector. Check and clean if necessary.
Hardware failure. Make an appointment at an Apple Store to have your device examined by a technician. Or contact Apple Support.

How do I get my money back from something I wouldn't have ordered?

You cannot call anyone.  You contact them as everyone else does:  http://www.apple.com/support/itunes/contact/
You delete the app as you do any other app.  Hold an icon until they wiggle.  Tap the "x".  This is covered in the manual.

  • How can I get the best out of my battery life?

There are a variety of things you can do to extend your device battery life, and use your phone for longer periods of time to see you through the day.
Set your screen to timeout after a period of inactivity. This way your phone is not sitting idle with the screen backlight consuming extra energy. The recommended screen timeout is 30 seconds, but most phones will allow from 15 seconds to 10 minutes.
Turn off location services (GPS), Wi-Fi and Bluetooth when not using these functions. When they're on, your phone constantly searches for your current location and open networks, which has a big impact on battery life.
Turn down the screen brightness. For example, on an iPhone 4 the lowest brightness setting gives roughly 6.5 hours of continuous use, whereas the highest setting gives roughly 3.5 hours. You can always adjust the brightness when you're outside so you can still see your screen clearly. Some devices have an auto-brightness setting, where the phone adjusts the screen brightness depending on the light around it.
Close your applications. On smartphones, returning to the ‘home' screen only minimises your apps – they keep running in the background. Closing your apps fully will save power; for example, on Samsung Galaxy devices hold down the home button for two seconds to see a list of all open apps. You can then swipe these to the left of the screen to exit them completely. On an Apple product, double press the home button to bring up all active applications and exit from there.

Re: How can I get the best out of my battery life?
    Hi,
When I make phone calls people on the other end have difficulty hearing me. They describe as they can hardly hear me as if I was speaking through the pillow etc). I am not touching any buttons and obviously it is not mute. This was happening couple of time in June, then every now and then. Recently it happened a few time in 2 weeks. I was trying to check if it was a reception issue but the place I spoke from is my office I make 70% of phone calls from. Can you book time for me in repair shop and address the issue.
    Thank you.
