Can't get to my desktop

Yesterday I was unable to get my laptop to respond after it went to sleep. I tried using the mouse but nothing reponded. I did a force quit and after the log on screen came up, I entered my password and got nothing except the grey apple, the sound of the hard drive chugging away for a loooooong time, then the log on screen returned. Tried logging on again with the same result. Subsequently used the Tiger install disk to run Disk Utility and repaired permissions and repaired the disk (which the program said was not needed). Tried starting from the machine's startup disk and continue to get the grey apple screen and spinning gear. Even tried changing the password. I eventualy get to the log on screen after a very long time, but can't get beyond it.
This seemed to start after my most recent auto update of OSX 10.4.11, which had an error on install and, according to auto update, couldn't be completed. I tried to reinstall the update, but the auto updater said I had no new updates to install. Meanwhile the machine operated normally for about a week, then this. The other thing I did during this time was delete my Firefox browser, which had become non-functioning prior to this whole ordeal. Don't know if any of this is related.
I'd like not to lose everything with a new install...any ideas?

Boot from the Install CD/DVD then after you choose your language, a Menubar will show up top, find Disk Utility and run it from there, do these 2 in order.

How can I get to the desktop?

Can't get to the desktop. When I press the Start button, or the combo Command-Ctrl-Start I get the musical cord but no desktop. I always shut it down with the Shut Down command from the Apple menu. Could this be another motherboard problem? The motherboard was replaced in 2007 by an Apple technician. Does a MB only last 2 years? Is there any way I can recover files? There are quite a few I really need. I'm a photographer and can't replace those files.

1. It's unclear from your post: Does anything show up on your monitor? If not, check your connections.
2. It could be a motherboard problem, but the happy mac sound would indicate that it isn't.
3. Yes, it is possible to recover files. How old is your hard disk? Have you backed up your files? If your had disk has failed, recovering your files can get expensive.

I installed a new printer driver that was missing and now I can't get to my desktop. I can log in but it stays on the same page. How do I boot from disc?

I recently upgraded to Snow Leopard and was missing the drivers for my HP 5000 printer. I got the drivers from HP and downloaded them. When I unzipped the file, my computer went to the login page. I logged in but it stays on that page. Can't get to desktop or do anything. Can anyone help with this?

Can't get Apple Remote Desktop to work

I cannot get apple remote desktop to recognize my lab computers. It only recognizes one in there and all the info is the same on the others. It sees them but it says they are offline when I have them all on and ready. I did an update to make sure they were up to speed. I am running ARD 3.5.2 on mine and 3.5.2 on the snow leopard macs and there are some just leopard macs in there running 3.4.

Sorry, but no, ARD does not have a "remote printing" feature. You can use ARD to copy a file to a remote Mac and than take control of that Mac to print the document, but you cannot print directly to the remote Mac (unless someone else here knows a trick I've not discovered).
Depending on how your wife's company has things set up in their connection to the Internet, she may be able to just set up printer sharing on the work computer and print directly without needing ARD at all. A utility such as Slink may make that easier:

yesterday I installed xorg and fluxbox the first time on my computer. Before I used arch linux only with console and because of that the style wasn't so important
But now I want a nice Desktop with fluxbox and I found a picture from a really nice one:

I downloaded the the theme, but my terminal emulator isn't transparent! Which terminal emulator is used on this machine and how can I get it transparent?
And which file manager ist that?
An other newbie question:
The font DejaVu Sans 9 is used on the desktop, which you can see on the picture! I configured xorg.conf to use freetype fonts but I don't know how I can change the font in fluxbox. At the moment my font size is to small. I want a larger size and a more eye candy font like "Dejavu Sans"

HT3964 How can I get back the desktop icons?

I am forced to start up my iMac 10.6.8 using PRAM. However when it starts up there are no desktop icons showing, only the dock shows which gives me limited internet access. Can anyone help me recover desktop icons?

Reinstall OS X without erasing the drive
1. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
2. Reinstall Snow Leopard
If the drive is OK then quit DU and return to the installer. Proceed with reinstalling OS X. Note that the Snow Leopard installer will not erase your drive or disturb your files. After installing a fresh copy of OS X the installer will move your Home folder, third-party applications, support items, and network preferences into the newly installed system.
Download and install Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1.

How can I get the CC desktop app to work properly?

I purchased a subscription and now I'm trying to install Adobe CC applications on my computer.
Unfortunately NOTHING is working the way it should…
I have tried calling support but they haven't called me back anymore.
Today I finally managed to get the Creative Cloud Desktop app installed, but it keeps giving me this message:
"The Creative Cloud installation is no longer functioning, please uninstall and download again from…"
I think I have tried all suggestions I found; uninstalling the app, repairing disk permissions, shutting down and starting up again, using the cleaner tool, renaming the OOBE folder in my Library… All steps in all order and with a restart and repairing disk permissions in between.
Also I followed all steps mentioned here: Use the CC Cleaner Tool to solve installation problems | CC, CS3-CS6
The only thing I can think of that didn't go as described is the verification of the Cleaner Tool, also no log file is created.
- When you see the message "Adobe Creative Cloud Cleaner Tool completed successfully," click Quit and restart your computer.
- In a text editor, such as TextEdit, open /Users/[user name]/Adobe Creative Cloud Cleaner Tool.log.
I'm not sure what else there could be, is there anyone that has had similar problems and found a way around it?

By the way, my MacBook Pro 13" Retina is running OSX 10.9.5 on a 2.4 GHz Intel Core i5 with 16 GB or RAM. All CS6 apps have been working without many problems…

Try to follow below steps
Click on Finder and then hold Command + Shift + G keys on your keypad
It will open Go to folder window, type exactly ~/Library and click on Go
Then open Application Support > Adobe folders
Trash AAMUpdater and OOBE folders.
Now click on finder and hold Command + Shift + G keys on your keypad.
This time type /Library and click on Go.
Make sure to remove ~ symbol.
Then open Application Support > Adobe folders.
Trash AAMUpdater, Adobe Application manager, OOBE folders.
Now Click on Finder and then hold Command + Shift + U keys on your keypad.
It will open utilities folder.
Trash Adobe Creative Cloud and Adobe Application Manager folders
Download and Run CC cleaner tool from below link

Can't get music from desktop to iTunes?

My dad sent me a recording, and I downloaded it onto my desktop. But I can't figure out how to get it onto my itunes? Before you say it, I've already tried importing it, and usually it works when I just drag it in, but it didn't work this time. I've tried a few different ways of formatting (mp3, m4a, aiff), and they don't seem to make a difference. Also, I've tried putting them in the iTunes folder on Finder before dragging and nothing. (the whole process, the folder w/ the artists name, the fold for the album, then the song)

I'm having the same problem, used to be able to just drag and drop, no more.

Treo 800W Can't get email from desktop outlook b/c no exchange server or web-based email

Help... I used to use the "personal business connection" from Sprint before they discontinued using it last fall to get my email. They housed it on their server by having it sink with my desktop outlook 2000 in real time, then my device (Treo 800w) would sink with their server so that I could respond to email on my treo and it would look the same in my desktop outlook as it did on my treo. It would show messages read that i had read, and my sent treo messages would appear in my desktop outlook sent folder. Since Sprint has discontinued "business connection-- personal", I have not been able to get my email in the same fashion. I don't have an exchange server at work and use POP3 email but it is not a commercial service like yahoo or gmail. I download my email to my outlook and primarily use outlook on my desktop but want to be able to use my treo to view and respond to email on the fly and have it show the messages I have already addressed in my desktop outlook. Any ideas? I am desperate and very frustrated that Sprint discontinued business connection. Every application I have looked at either required an exchange server or that I house all my email on a web-based site and quit using my desktop outlook. Thanks....

Yes, I was very bummed when Sprint discontinued BCPE.
SEVEN Networks, the company that made BCPE for Sprint, has several new products available under beta. None of them seem to offer exactly what we had with BCPE. In fact, one forum posting says that our style of usage (sync'ing directly with the data stored in the Outlook data file) was never actually a supported configuration. I can't get Creative Cloud Desktop installed on my new iMac

I bought a new iMac. It's running Mac OS X 10.9.2.
1. I backed up everything on the old mac.
2. I uninstalled all Adobe Creative Cloud apps on the old mac.
3. I used Apple Migration Assistant to transfer all data from the old mac to the new mac.
4. I downloaded and installed Adobe Creative Cloud Desktop on the new mac.
5. I clicked on the Adobe Creative Cloud Desktop icon at the top of the screen. (upper right)
6. A window popped open, save "Creative Cloud" written on a black ground, then were nothing in the window. The window is blank. I wasn't asked to accept the terms of use. There is no "home", "apps", "files", "fonts" "behance" options. There's nothing.
Everything other time I've installed Creative Cloud Desktop, the first question is to accept the terms of use. In this case, there was nothing - just an empty window. Also, the Adobe Creative Cloud Desktop icon at the top of the screen is light grey. It turns black after the user accepts the terms of use. The icon at the top of my screen is always light grey.
What can I do to fix this?

How can I get Apple Remote Desktop to disappear from my App Store updates list?

My Apple Remote Desktop software shows up in my App Store updates list. But I have already updated it to version 3.6.1 and it shows as "Installed". It is greyed out and will not go away. Any ideas on how to make it disappear is most appreciated.

All the suggestions I have read have not worked for me.
But you can try:
Running Software Update from the Apple Menu
Logging in to the Mac App Store with the account that purchased ARD
Deleting various Apple Store .plist files
NB I haven't tried removind ARD and reinstalling.

My new update to FF version 33 is installed LOCKED in full screen and I can not get to my desktop

I use a HDMI TV as a monitor. When I upgraded to ver 33.02(?), it locked in FULL SCREEN and my TV/Monitor is not adjustable so the option at the top "EXIT FULL SCREEN" is not showing or available and must be rolled off the top.
I can not find any way to get out of it in the new release 33.02(?) and now am using IE for this post as this full screen makes FF almost inoperable.
If necessary, I would be glad to permanently disable the full screen for FF as it is a real pain.

Can't get rid of desktop's icon in sidebar? There are two of them! (w/pic)

I was trying to clean up my home folder when I accidentally dragged the "desktop" icon into the trash. I drug it back out and put it back in there, but now, when I go to open a file in another program, I see TWO desktop icons!
I don't see two of them in the regular finder sidebar, just anytime a "browse" box is open.
How do I get rid of it? Thanks!

My guess is it is automatically adding a Desktop item to the open file dialog, and it is displaying the one you manually put there. Remove the one you added, then go to the Finder Preferences and check the Desktop item in the Sidebar Prefs.
