Can't get two displays to work anymore

We have a computer lab where I work of PowerMac G5's, all which have two 17" LCD monitors attached. One of the computers recently stopped working with two displays and will only work with one. If both monitors are plugged in, the LCD that works will be the one with the "extra" desktop area. If you unplug a monitor, you can get the actual desktop area on the one remaining monitor. The monitors are both fine (swapped them out) and the video connector/converters are fine, as I swapped them with another system that works fine. When looking at "Display" in system preferences, the "arrangement" tab is completely missing on either monitor. I have reinstalled the drivers, (it's an ATI Radeon 9800 xt 256 mg) swapped with another video card from a spare system, and even reinstalled Mac OS X (reinstall/archive feature) and still nothing has happened. I've thought it was a hardware problem all a long, my boss thinks it is software. I'm very new at Macs. Any suggestions?
Power Mac G5   Mac OS X (10.3.8)

If you can find a used one. That is the only dual card Apple was selling at the time. There a other choices now, from adding a PCI card, to replacing your current card with a dual. I'm not sure of the AGP speed of your machine, so can't recommend a specific card, but when you do buy one, insist on a money back guarantee that it will work with your machine. Some cards don't work with all the machines the claim to be compatible with.

  • Getting two Displays to Work on a Radeon 9800 Pro Mac Special Edition

    Hi Folks
I am reallt having difficulties here. Let me explain:
    1. I have a Power Mac G5 (2004) Dual 2GHz WITH 2GB Ram (http://support.apple.com/specs/powermac/PowerMac_G5_June2004.html)
    1. I have just purchaed two 24" Dell Displays that come with DVI and VGA leads (http://accessories.euro.dell.com/sna/productdetail.aspx?c=uk&l=en&s=bsd&cs=ukbsd t1&sku=59234).
    2. I have also purchaed Radeon 9800 Pro Mac Special Edition 256 DDR (http://ati.amd.com/products/radeon9800/radeon9800proseme/specs.html).
    3. I want to connect both displays to my 9800. One of them can go into the DVI port, but what do I need to get the other monitor working on the 9800? I presume I will need some kind of adapter?
I have spent literally hours, and hours seaching forums and google to find the answer to this.... just can't find the solution.
If anyone can help I would be indebted.
    Thank you so much.

    Hey Hatter
Thats great. I have already bought the 9800 so unfortuantly Im committed. I managed to get it for about $200 brand new so I felt that was a reasonable price.
I have pruchased the following adapter - http://www.pcwb.com/catalogue/item/GEFEN068?speedtrapid=froogle&lead=froogle
Thanks so much for the advance....your a star mate!!

  • How do I get two displays to work on Macbook Pro 13 inch?

I have my laptop hooked to a Thunderbolt Display and then I have a second monitor hooked through a mini-display port to DVI adapter plugged into the back of the Thunderbolt display. When I go into Display I only see one monitor. I don't see a detect Monitor button like the other suggestions have said. If I plug the mini-display port to DVI adapter directly into the laptop it works (but only if I open the laptop). I chatted with Apple support this morning and it should work but I can't get it to work. ideas?

Found out from Apple Support - "MiniDisplay port displays will not function when connected to the ThunderBolt port on a THunderbolt display."

    Hello,
Does anyone know how I can get 2 monitors to work on my G4 533Dual. if I plug them both in at the same time the clear monitor goes out (Apple Studio Disply 17 inch transparent monitor). If I plug it in first then add the 17inch Apple ColorSync display the Studio display wont work. I have restarted and tried all different things the ports all work as do the monitors just not at the same time. I want to be able to see different things on both monitors. I also have a 733 with the same GeForce2 MX card so swaping them wont help. Can anyone tell me what I need. thanks.

  • Can't get hd display to work

have had the macbook air connected to HD TV using the mini tv - HD connector, but it's stopped working. Tried ON-OFF, wiggling it, used Detect Display but it just won't find it any more.  Last thing I did was download a movie using SKYGO last night, but don't see why this would effect it.
    Any idea's?

Was there any software change (update to OSX, new software installed, old software updated, etc.) that occurred around the time the problem showed up?  That's the next thing you could test since, for the moment, the laptop and the adapter are out.
Since you've indicated you tested the cable and TV (I assume by connecting the cable to another HDMI video source that has worked) it's not a total cable failure, nor an apparent total failure of that HDMI port.  I also assume if you have multiple HDMI ports on the TV you've tried hooking the MacBook Air to another one and/or swapped in a different cable--not likely, but I suppose possible if there is some quirk with data getting back to the Air that might not bother some devices that don't make use of that information.
One way to test the Air/adapter would be to find a friend willing to let you hook up the Air to an HDMI port on their TV.
If your Air is still under warranty you should take it to Apple.  Realize there's a decent chance they will plug it into an HDMI display there and all will be fine (video can be termpermental, and HDMI seems especially so--had interesting issues with a Roku when swapping from one TV to another to figured out what wasn't getting automatically reset) but if it is truly a dead video output on the Air that's one way to test it.  You likely can bring along the adapter (assuming it's the Apple one) and have that looked at too.

  • KM4M Problem ( can't get the usb to work anymore).

    Hi there people.
My mainboard apparently no longer recognises the USB ports as well as the ethernet one. I am not sure what the problem is, has anyone else experienced this? I had stopped using the PC in December but recently tried to connect it to my peer-to-peer network and found this out.
    Cheers.

I have an Retina display MacBook Pro with HMDI out port. I also have an HDMI to Component cable with Audio Plugs. How can I get HDMI out to work with this cable when plugged into the MacBook Pro and connected to the TVs Component and Audio in ports.

Will not work.  To my knowledge, dual converting like that isn't supported.  The Mac must detect the connected video output device and that sort of info cannot be done across an analog component uni-directional connection.

  • Migration Assistant: Problems transferring data from PC (XP SP3) to new Mac Pro 2012 - can not get Migration Assistant to work as PC will not display verfify passcode

Migration Assistant: Problems transferring data from PC (XP SP3) to new Mac Pro 2012 - can not get Migration Assistant to work as PC will not display verfify passcode
Hello, I am having problems migrating data from my old PC running XP (SP3) to my new Mac Pro 2012 using the Migration Assistant.
    - I downloaded and installed the Windows Migration Assistant from Apple
    - My Mac recognized PC and displays passcode
    - The sasscode does not show / display on my PC
    - My Mac is then stuck in "authenticating" loop and the PC is stuck "waiting for Mac to connect."
    - Both computers are connected on same network (have connected PC on WIFI and using ethernet to Reuter)
I have looked on support site and only response I saw says to reinstall Windows Migration Assistant (which I have done)
Any ideas?  If cant get this to workare there instructions for manually bring across relevant data eg itunes music and apps, photos, picasa data etc?

Why not turn off the Windows firewall and uninstall any other firewall software you have installed?
If you are using a Norton product uninstall it and discard it. To fully unistall most Norton products you have to go to the Norton website and download a soecial program to completely get rid of it. The normal uninstall feature built into the program will not remove all of it.

  • How can I get my ipod to work with itunes?

When I connect my ipod classic into my new computer it seems that itunes does not recognize it. How can I get my ipod to work with itunes? I'm afraid to disconnect my ipod because the display is saying Do Not Disconnect.

    1. Update iTunes to the latest version. Plug in your iPod. If iTunes still can't recognize it, then in iTunes in the top left corner click help> run diagnostics. On the box that comes up, check the last two things. Click next and it should identify your iPod.
    2. Click on your windows start menu. Type in "services". Click on it and when it pops up, on the bottom of it click on "standard". Now Scroll down to find "Apple Mobile Device" Right click it when you see it and click on "Start". When it has started, close iTunes and replug in your iPod and it should show up.
    3. Check the USB cable
4 Verify that Apple Mobile Device Support is installed
    5. Restart the Apple Mobile Device Service and verify that the Apple Mobile Device USB Driver is installed.
    6. If you just want to add some photos, songs and movies from computer to your devices, you can use an iTunes alternative to do the job
    7. Check for third-party software conflicts.

Can anyone help me with this?

The standard arch kernel includes all the required modules, at most you need to load them explicitly listing them in MODULES in /etc/rc.conf
You need also the hw specific stuff, that is i915 and intelagp. Check lsmod and see if they are loaded. If they are not, inspect dmesg and see if udev tries to load them and fails for some reason.
I remember some cases where intelagp and i915 are not loaded by udev in the right order, if this is your case you can try to list them in the right order in MODULES.
There should be no need to recompile the kernel or to install a particular version of dri (just use the arch packages for mesa, libdrm etc; but I guess you have them already)

  • After upgrading to Lion can't get Boot Camp to work! Just get "startup dusk cannot be portioned or restored to a single partition"?

After upgrading to Lion can't get Boot Camp to work! Just get "The startup disk cannot be partitioned or restored to a single partition". Anytone?

This message, and threads like yours got asked daily for over two years, now it is only a couple times a week!!
Is it so hard to follow through? you were to have backup already, clones are best, then erase/format and restore.
    Then partition.
Some have been able to use Disk Utility booted from OS X DVD or another drive, and repair the drive.
You have to use Boot Camp Assistant (99.9% anyway) to create and achieve a proper Windows Master Boot Record partition.

  • I can't get two "room" objects to "glue" together in a floor plan

I can 't get two rooms to "glue" together in Visio 2010.
I've tried several ways to drag the "room" objects and handles around the floor plan but not only do the rooms not glue to each other, they snap or glue to other things (like ruler divisions), making it almost impossible to get the room walls to
    overlap cleanly.
I found a forum posting somewhere where the respondent only suggested verifying default settings and I matched mine up with those, but that thread went cold without a solution.
What settings are required, and what steps are required, to glue two "room" objects together in Visio 2010?

    Thanks, George,
You began your message with a question, but I think you understand "why I would want rooms to snap together", thus your work-around.
Nonetheless, the "big answer" is that I want to set the
room dimensions for each room individually (we're using Visio to place our belongings within each room) and then snap the rooms together to "build the house".
I started out by creating several rooms with correct dimensions (which I then locked with Developer / Protection).
That's when I discovered that the rooms "wanted" to snap to ruler divisions and geometry instead of to each other.
It's pretty clear that the room design templates / stencils in Visio 2010 have limited functionality - the "convert to walls" feature, for example, generates some pretty horrendous artifacts.
The second most irksome problem is connector routing - I've spent an hour or two doing nothing more than removing excess connection points because connectors insist on routing around some shapes, generating bizarre, wandering paths that I can't seem to disable.
But still, Visio 2010 is better for this purpose than CorelDraw and far better than "SmartDraw", and I don't have any CAD software.  I just doubt that Microsoft has made Visio 2013 any better - Microsoft
seems to flip between simple maintenance releases and "grand" rewrites, failing to embrace anything like "continuous improvement".
Finally, the ribbon, a "blonde" solution at best, is particularly horrible in Visio - much of my work on this drawing has required me to switch among ribbon tabs.
Sorry for the rant, George, but anything I can learn to help with these issues will make the remainder of the job better.

  • Can't get Home Sharing to work with ATV, v7.0.3 and iTunes 12.1.0.50

I can't get Home Sharing to work. I'm looking at my MacBook screen and iTunes says Home Sharing is On. On Apple TV, it says Turn On Home Sharing in iTunes. Both are using the same Apple ID and password (signed out and signed back in manually on both). I have tried the following: Signing out of and into Home Sharing on Apple TV and iTunes, closing iTunes and restarting the MacBook, restarting and restoring Apple TV to factory settings, restarting my router, all possible iterations of the aforementioned. Nothing seems to work. Also tried renaming my computer in preferences/sharing.
    Any new ideas?
    Using ATV3 software v7.0.3
    iTunes software v12.1.0.50
MacBook software OS X Yosemite v10.10.2

Only have one network; wireless. On it's own, the MacBook can use wifi to surf the net and Apple TV can watch movie previews from Apple via wifi.
It did work about two months ago. I haven't used it since then for home sharing but have used the Apple TV on its own.
I read the Troubleshooting page on Apple Support. It involves turning various things on and off, which I did
