Can't go to recovery mgr, boots without it-won't use the recovery cds

I wanted to restore my hp pavilion dv6000 back to its original condition, but it won't go into recovery mgr (f11) at all. And I bought a cd recovery mgr a few years but come to find out it won't work because I'm on a 64-bit machine. I Tested everything in a startup mgr a few days ago and everything passed ok. btw- I have norton on my computer and thought that because I am running it in the background, that I am immune to any threat or virus's, but recently got Trojan red checked error and i'm not even online. (I have only used this computer as a glorified Internet computer, just checking my emails, but I can't even get to that anymore either). I have backups on an external drive, so I thought I could restore it to it's original condition but it won't restore. Help!!!

  • I have a mac book pro with Boot Camp that also runs windows.  I upgraded to Lion and somehow it crashes the mac side peridoically.  I am told I need to "clean" it and reinstall lion using the recovery drive.  will that delete the windows partition too??

I have a mac book pro with Boot Camp that also runs windows.  I upgraded to Lion and now the mac side crashes/freezes periodically, especially iphoto.  I am told by the genius' that I probably need to "clean" it and reinstall lion using the "recovery drive" which resets everything back to default and reinstalls the lion operating system.  My question is will this also delete the "windows" partition drive and all that data too.  If so that will be a huge pain in the ___ to back up and reinstall boot camp and windows. I want to shoot the lion.

There is no system like Acronis for the Mac platform. You can try using the buiilt in Disk Utility to create an Image of the complete Mac drive but I have found that this does not work very well as on tryiing to restore it gives errors sometimes.
You can use SuperDuper or Carbon Copy Cloner to create a bootable Clone of your system partition. But that is only for the System partition and not the complete drive.
If you use Boot Camp to install Windows on your Mac neither of those two programs will clone the Windows side.
Neither will Disk utility as Mac's can not create or write to a NTFS partition. So some other program is need for that.

  • Satellite L500-19X - Can't use the recovery disk

Well I got this laptop two days ago and used it once after installing fire fox and my mobile broadband drvier's and going back home to boot up and find it was going to happen,
I had tried safe mode (all three) and repair and all I got was a black screen with the cursor up where there should have been a language screen (I used the recovery disk that came along with the laptop) so anyway after finding out I wasnt going to be able to repair it I tried to install but of course that didn't work either so I put my XP 64 bit OS on and worked perfectly fine, then I upgraded (using my own upgrade windows 7) and that works fine no problems, so I tried again with the original windows 7 that came pre-installed on the laptop's hard drive and all went find untill it starts installing driver's or updates (I'm not 100% sure on this but it is at and/or after the face recognition installation,
Then it shuts it's self down and boots back up to automatically restart and asking me if I want to repair due to a bad start-up so I do the repair boots back up and still says I need to repair and finds nothing wrong and carrys on in that circle.
Now I have been told that it could be the register or it is a graphics problem, I myself am getting pretty fed up of having to install/reinstall/format this laptop.
So if there is anyone who know's what is wrong or what to do or even if it needs to be sent back to be fixed that will be very helpful.
    I thank anyone in advance.
    Happy new year :)

    Hi
Well, I think its really hard to say what the reason is. Maybe the recovery disk is scratchy or the files corrupt there.
At the moment I cant imagine that its a hardware problem because other Windows disk working properly.
In your case I would try to install Windows 7 from a Microsoft disk and then see what happens. If it works properly and you can install all drivers & tools you should order a new recovery disk from Toshiba directly.

What do you mean exactly? Did you mean the HDD???
The A300 supports and 2.5 SATA HDD and all 2.5 HDD should be recognized properly since the SATA HDD controller hasnt any limitations.

  • GT60 - Can I break RAID0 and then use the Recovery disks?

Is it possible to break the RAID0 and then use the recovery disks from MSI Burn Recovery or a Windows Home Premium Disk with the code from the sticker on my laptop,  to install back to factory settings without the RAID0? Just want to make sure before I do something drastic. Thank you.

you can always make an system image of your current windows on an external drive and then experiment with it and if anything breaks, just change bios settings to older ones and recover your older system, everything will be intact like nothing ever happened.

Your backups may be hopelessly corrupted, but there's a chance an (expensive) 3rd-party Disk Repair utility might be able to fix them.  For the moment, eject and disconnect the TM drive and try to repair the internal.

    Do that first.

    Hi,
Shutdown the notebook.  Tap away at f11 as you start to access Recovery Manager which you can then use to reinstall the Operating System.

  • How can I resize an image without losing resolution or using the crop tool? I am using Photoshop Elements 13 on a PC.

How can I resize an image without losing resolution or using the crop tool? I am using Photoshop Elements 13 on a PC.

    Hi Peru Bob,
I've tried two images, the results were:
    Image 1
    Jpg, original file size 923KB, dimensions 848px x 279px.
After resizing to 848px x 180px with 72dpi, the file size decreased to 164KB.
    Image 2
    Jpg, original file size 809KB, dimensions 1200px x 1800px.
After resizing to 668px x 722px with 72dpi, the file size decreased to 307KB.
So, there seems to be a fair file size loss - is this to be expected?

  • W520 - Using the recovery partition without a bootable OS installed

I've got a W520 with a hard drive that has been completely wiped aside from the Q/Recovery partition.
Is there a workflow for using the recovery partition to rebuild the factory Windows 7 install?
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    1. Grab ImageX from Microsoft (somewhere).
    2. Get a bootable USB with Windows 7 setup
    3. Boot into the USB and enter repair tools (Command Prompt)
    4. Navigate to the recovery partition, FactoryRecovery folder.
    5. Note the size of sdrivebackup.wim
    6. Use DISKPART to create a partition of at least this size. Make sure it is the first, it is active, and set to bootable.
    7. Use ImageX to apply sdrivebackup.wim to this partition.
The command should be: ImageX /apply [recoverypartition]:\FactoryRecovery\sdrivebackup.wim [newpartition]:\
    8. Then use DISKPART again to create an appropriately sized Windows 7 partition (presumably all the remaining space).
    9. Again, use ImageX to apply cdrivebackup.swm to the newly created Windows 7 partition.
The command should be: ImageX /apply [recoverypartition]:\FactoryRecovery\cdrivebackup.swm [newwindowspartition]:\
Ideally this should make it work. If it doesn't, try a Startup Repair from the Windows install USB to fix any bootloader issues.

  • Error: This disk needs to be repaired using the Recovery HD.  When I boot on Recovery and run verify disk, the error doesn't come anymore. Just when I run verify disk on normal mode. Anybody has seen this before?

My Macbook Pro (Retina, 13-inch, Early 2013) has been freezing out of the blue probably once every two months. I restarted on safe mode, went to Disk Utility, repaired permissions and ran "Verify Disk" and got  the following:
Invalid directory item count(It should be 114483 instead of 114484)
File system check exit code is 8.
Error: This disk needs to be repaired using the Recovery HD. Restart your computer, holding down the Command key and the R key until you see the Apple logo. When the OS X Utilities window appears, choose Disk Utility.
Rebooted on Recovery mode and ran "Verify Disk" but the message didn't appear anymore, thus not letting me to access the "Recovery HD" procedure.
When I restart normally and do the disk verification I get the same error.
Has anybody come to something similar?
    Suggestions?

I never  ever run a Verify Disk. I simple repair the disk drive and then the user partition(s).
And do one or two Safe Boots.
Also helpful to have two full backups: TimeMachine at least, plus a clone of your system drive and data.
Install or clone the system to an external hard drive, repair that and then boot from it, check that everything works, repair the internal drive.
You need to use Repair to TRIM an SSD.
Lots of problems with Yosemite when updating install a new OS. Always better to backup, erase, install, and then use Setup Assistant to import and restore settings and files.
Probably better to post in the MacBook Pro forum or better yet, in Yosemite forum.

  • I am unclear how I have to use the Recovery CD

I have added up all the space my hard disk is using it comes to about 12GB, I have 27.9 GB disk space but my disk only has 1.80 disk space left. I have done everything obvious to resolve this problem. Recycle bin is empty, I have run disk clean up.
A computer expert suggested that Windows could have become confused and cannot recognize what space I have spare, this could be because I have run a program called Cyberscrub often. His solution was to reload Windows XP home. My laptop came with recovery disks, everything else already loaded. I have so much I do not want to lose on my laptop. If I use the recovery disks, will I lose everything on my computer, am I best to buy Windows XP home and re-load, in which case will I not lose my work?
Also I am unclear how I use the recovery discs, I cannot find any instructions on what you do.
The one person who could help me has gone off traveling and not contactable.
    Any help greatly appreciated
    Lorraine Hart

    Hello,
what kind of programs do you have on your harddisk? Maybe a little description of your System will help us further. You mentioned, that you have a Program called Cyberscrub. Is this Program showing you your diskspace? Check this out! This program is, as i know, usually intended to wipe harddisks or files.
Maybe you can try some Registry cleaner that cleanes out some information which is showing you wrong information that is corrupted by Cyberscrub. Maybe this helps.
Another suggestion: run the program "chkdsk". This program will check out your filesystem on errors. Maybe it can fix that problem. You can run this program with right-clicking on the symbol of your systemdisk, clicking on "extras" and choosing the "Checking on errors" or something like.
At all events, when this fails, then you dont have to buy a new XP Home. You dont need it because you have already one on a recovery cd, and you can solve that easily.
You have to write down which programs you have in your system and backup your important data with a backup program or just burn it to a dvd or cd. You have the option to put the whole system on a mobile Harddisk connected over USB. This means backing up your system to this harddisk.
After that, you have to boot with the recovery-cd, by pushing the "c" button at boot time.
Then you follow the instructions and reload the "factory-like-installed" Windows XP on your Harddisk. Dont forget: all your data on the system disk will be erased, and the corrupted information of the free diskspace too. After that you just put the backup of your data back to your systemdisk and reinstall the programs you noted before the re-install of your system. Then the system will be clear again.
Let me know about the activity of your problem.

  • Download required for reinstall using the recovery volume?

I'm a bit confused about this new Recovery partition in OSX Lion, From within the recovery partition, can someone please explain why it has to download "additional" content from apple?
Isn't the whole idea behind having the recovery partition is so that it can install the OS back on the main drive without requiring downloadable content? isn't the OS itself saved on this recovery partiton? if not, that seems utterly worthless seeing as how it's estimating 5 hours+
Logically, this makes absolutely no sense, anyone with information on how this recovery partition is even remotely useful, please feel free to reply and give me some info on this.
    Thank you...

That seems to be a bogus message.
But yes, the reinstall requires a download; a copy of OSX is not in the Recovery HD (it's only about 650 MB).
