Can't hear MIDI keyboard thru GarageBand (or anywhere else)

I have a year-old MacBook running Leopard, and a Midiman (now mAudio?)49 Keystation USB controller (keyboard). The MIDI setup utility recognizes one MIDI input, but I can't hear the keyboard in Garage Band 3 or any other app I use (Songworks II). I've tried different input settings in Garage Band preferences, System Preferences and in the Audio MIDI setup utility, to no avail. The same keyboard works fine on my iMac G4, running the same software. As I said, the keyboard is USB powered. Is it possible that the MacBook doesn't produce enough power to run it? I have some serious projects to do and would be grateful for help. Maybe I need a newer keyboard? Thanks.

Thanks for the replies. Turned out I needed new drivers.

i plugged my midi keyboard into logic express just like i did in garageband. i can see the notes but i cant hear them! how do i fix this? i've tried everything i can think of and i didnt find it in the manual. i wan't to lay down some drum beats and stuff but it wont let me do it manually w/ my keyboard. please help me!

    Mike,
You may want to run the Setup Assistant. That helped me out when starting. Do this by:
    Logic Pro>Preferences>Start Logic Setup Assistant
If you have done this already, be sure you have selected the correct Audio Driver. To check this go to:
    Logic Pro>Preferences>Audio
Then click the "Drivers" tab. Make sure "Built in" is selected in the Driver drop down menu, if you want playback to go to the laptop speakers.
If all of this is correct, be sure that you have an "Audio Instrument" selected in the track you see the MIDI notes. To do this:
    1) Locate an "Audio Instrument" track. Usually called something like "Inst 1".
    2) Click on the Audio Instrument track in the Arrange. A fadder should appear on the left hand side of the Arrange. If it does not try typing "P" or going to the local menu and click View>Parameters
    3) in the Input slot of the Audio Instument track's fader, click and hold the top slot (just below I/O) follow the menus to:
    Stereo>Logic>EFM1
    4) Now play your MIDI keyboard and see if it plays back.
    Hope this is helpful,
    Mitch

  • Resounding note with a MIDI keyboard in GarageBand

    Hi everyone!
I am having a problem with a resounding note with a MIDI keyboard in GarageBand. I am running the following:
    GarageBand Version: 10.0.2
    Keyboard: Korg PA50
Macbook Pro 2.3 GHz Intel Core i7
    16 GB of RAM
    OSX 10.9.4
What happens is when I am recording, one note (could be an Eb, could be a G, the note changes each time) continues to sound after I have stopped recoding and taken off the sustain pedal and my fingers off the keyboard. It happens for virtual instruments that don’t even sustain using the sustain pedal such as an organ. The solution to this is to select a different virtual instrument and reselect the one I was using. This is not great especially in the middle of recording.
If anyone has any ideas, that would be much appreciated! If you need any extra info, please ask!
    Thanks for your time!

To anyone with this issue, I have resolved it. I was using a third party USB-MIDI cable. I bought a new proper one for $65 (NZ Dollar) and have had no problems since. Hope this helps!

  • TS1702 Using an iPad camera connection kit and a MIDI to USB cable to interface a MIDI keyboard with GarageBand. It works flawlessly... almost...

I'm using an iPad camera connection kit and a MIDI to USB cable to interface a MIDI keyboard with GarageBand. It works flawlessly... until I use the sustain pedal. Once the pedal is depressed while playing a given note, from then on, the pedal itself plays the note every time it is depressed. It's not the keyboard or the pedal. I've tried others. That leaves the app or the connection between the iPad and the keyboard. I find it hard to believe I'm the only person who is experiencing this problem. Anyone have a fix?

Yes.  There are a ton of write-ups on how to do the connections.   I connect my m-audio Keystation 61 es through the CCK to my iPad and use GarageBand to control it.  Some keyboards require a powered USB hub to make things work.  I use a belkin 4 port hub in my own setup.   Here is a link to tested / verified keyboards that work via the CCK:  http://iosmidi.com/devices/

  • How to hear midi keyboard in Logic Pro 9?

    Hi folks,
I'm a bit new to this, so please excuse my ignorance.
I'm trying to use my midi keyboard in conjunction with Logic Pro 9. So far I have connected my keyboard's midi output to my Komplete 6 interface (which is connected to Logic). Logic is clearly picking up whatever I'm doing on the keyboard - I just can't hear it back. I'm guessing there is probably a very simple solution that I am stupidly not realising ...
Would one of you brilliant people mind helping a novice like me?
    Thank you!

  • Can't hear midi?

I have been using logic for a while, but just got a Midiman USB keyboard and wanted to do some midi tracks. The drivers are installed and it works and plays in Reason. I can record the midi notes in Logic, but there is no playback. Is there a reason for this? I am not seeing a way to do this. How does one record and hear a midi track?

A MIDI track is for playing an external MIDI device like a synth/keybard etc - what I think you need is an instrument track into which you add a logic synth/plugin- you then play this with your MIDI keyboard.
Click on the box under the I/O label on the channel strip and select an instrument like ES2.. Or click on the box at the top of the strip and select something from the Logic Library.

  • Can't hear my keyboard's instruments

I'm not sure when I lost the ability to hear the built-in instruments from my Yahama keyboard in LE 8 but the problem either happened after upgrading to Leopard or upgrading to LE 8. I'm getting a midi signal from the keyboard into logic (it's registering) but I cant hear anything. I can record audio regions but on playback no sounds emanate from them. It looks like the audio regions do contain waveforms also. I can connect a pair of headphones directly to the keyboard's output and hear just fine.
From that jack, I'm connected to the back of my Mac at the Audio IN port. I updated the to the latest universal Yamaha Midi driver yesterday but still no joy.
For starters, should the new tracks I create in order to use and hear my onboard piano instruments be midi or audio? I believe in LE 7, I just used and audio track and armed the record function - then good to go... Any ideas? Thanks.

It may be that your keyboard is not sending MIDI data on channel 1.
Can you reset the keyboard to factory defaults? Sometimes that solves problems like this.

  • Can't hear usb keyboard

Hi, i can't hear my m-audio keystation49e keyboard when i press the notes on it.
I have only opened the tutorial song at the moment, as i have only just got logic pro7.2 and am still using the tutorial song to experiment and learn.
I went to audio midi setup and my keyboard is recognised and selected i also clicked apply on it and then clicked test sound and it played so i know its working.
if its any help, i cant find my keyboard in the logic set up assistant when i click add at the midi devices part, so i just selected midi in - my keyboard.
    thanks for any help

Ok, I may be "blind" but I think I've figured out what you have to do. Open the Tutorial file (ok, you probably figured that out already). From the main overhead Window menu, selected Environment. If the environment window shows you a graphic of a keyboard and cabling you can skip the next step, if it shows a mixer do the following. On the left side of the environment window it will say Audio, hold the mouse button down until you have a menu and select MIDI-Instr instead of Audio. Now you should have a graphic representation of a keyboard and some cabling. In the upper left of the map there is an iconic representation marked Physical Input Object. Rubber band select that bad boy and hit delete. If your keyboard now works, save this entire file with a clever name like, Newtorial and continue to follow the manual from there. Don't worry, the only way you can screw things up is if you alter the tutorial file and then save it with it's original title. If this works, please let us know! If not, calling Apple support is not a bad idea at all, they're very pleasant and helpful and based in Texas which is a much bigger place than New York. They've helped me a number of times, even though I'm "blind". Good luck and keep us apprised.

  • I can't hear my keyboard when recording.

I have a Edirol Midi keyboard PCR-50 and I can record a software instrument with it but There is no monitor so I can't hear what I am recording. How do I turn on the monitoring?
Unlike when recording a real instrument the stereo/mono/monitor control in the lower right window is not there for the midi/software insruments.

  • HT4106 How do I use a midi keyboard on GarageBand with my iPad? When I try it says the device cannot be used as it requires too much power.  However, I have given the midi it's own power source.

How do I use a midi keyboard as an input device on garageband? Its an oxygen 61 board.  I'm using an iPad camera connection kit and a separate power source for the midi but each time it says it cannot use the midi as it requires too much power.

I have the same problem with my iPad and 61. Sometimes it says device not supported and sometimes it rants about power - any solutions anyone ?

  • Can't import midi files in garageband 11 after lion install?

I can't import or open midi files in garageband 11 ,tried reinstalling from my app dvd, will not allow, it is grayed out was using snow leopard and updated
to lion and thats when it quit also my quicktime pro 7 will no longer export midi.

Same here. Now that I think of it, I recently put in Logic Studio 8 and Garageband didn't open on it's own anymore. That was iLife'06. I then up-graded to iLife '08 and Garageband still doesn't open to a new project. The only way I can still open Garageband is to make a "template" out of one of their demos, then when that opens I strip the tracks out and start with new ones. By the way, I just tried to install XLN Audio's Addictive Drums. They work in Logic Studio, but do not open at all in Garageband. Error message says the plug-in is not "valid". So much for Garageband being easier than Logic.

  • What do i do if i can't hear a track in garageband?

What to do if I can't hear a track?

Which version of GarageBand do you have?
And what have you tried already to fix it?
Is it only one particular track you cannot hear, or is GarageBand silent?
A real instrument track or a a software instrument track?
Have you checked, if any tracks are muted or soloed?

  • Can't hear the amps in garageband

    Hi,
I'm new at garageband. I use version 10.0.3
I recently bought a Focusrite Saffire 6 Usb interface. I have external speakers and I'm trying to use the interface to play my base and guitar through the garageband amps.
The trouble is, it only works a small percentage of the time. I can't seem to activate the amps. In the preference section I've chosen my interface as both input and output. I've read in other post about turning monitoring on but I don't see where in the program that option is available.
Occasionally it has worked, usually when i've created a new track,  but I cannot figure out what I did right.
How can I hear the amp sound?
    /KFA

Try taking a look at this support document to see if the steps there help. If you can't hear a person on a call or voicemail or if the sound quality is poor on iPhone - Apple Support
