Can't hear my electric guitar in garageband, I've read all prior posts-.

And I want to play sooooo bad!!
Here's my set up:
(input) USB to 1/4 jack to guitar
(headphone output) 1/8 to 1/4 to guitar amp (I can hear anything else on my MBP through the amp)
Preferences: Audio/MIDI- Output is set to built in
Input set to USB
Input Source is Mono 1 track link USB interface
Monitor ON
I can see my noise in the green, but hear nothing.
What am I missing here?

yes this will work
you can also get a splitter cable that goes in to your in/out port so you can have 2 (or more) separate ports

• Unable to hear my electric guitar

trying to figure out GB 10.0.2!!! Followed instructions in manual to connect and hear my electric guitar during recording (at least I think I followed the directions correctly), but there's no sound. Monitor button is on. Input source is correctly selected.

Hi davicon9t9,
If you are having issues connecting or hearing the input from your guitar in GarageBand, you may find the following articles helpful (apologies for any information duplicated from the manual):
GarageBand '11: Connect an electric guitar
GarageBand '11: Set the input source for an electric guitar
GarageBand '11: Turn monitoring on or off for an electric guitar
GarageBand '11: If you don’t hear sound from a Real Instrument

• Can I use my electric piano on GarageBand

Can I use my electric piano on GarageBand?
What cables do I use?
What do I click on in the app?

If you want to learn to play the piano, there are some downsides to using synthesizers or Midi controllers that do not have weighted keys. The reason is that the weight and resistance of real piano keys require your fingers to develop strengths that you will not have by learning to play on a keyboard with plastic, unweighted keys. Having said that, you can learn the basics of how to play, in terms of learning how to put chords together and understanding scales, but it will be a whole different ball game if you actually try to play a real piano after playing on non-weighted keys; essentially, you will have to spend time developing the strength and agility in your fingers. So, it can be a good plan to learn by going the cheap and (small size) route by getting an unweighted keyboard, but if you really like playing the piano and want to continue on, then at some point, you need to get something with weighted keys--either a good synthesizer or electric piano, or the real thing (spinet, upright, baby grand, or grand).

• Help! I only hear clean electric guitar while recording, and amp/effects after recording!

I have my electric guitar plugged into an Apogee Duet (driver is up to date with Yosemite). After track is setup with effects, in an audio track or in a guitar preset track (I tried both), I can play and hear the guitar clean tones only without the effects I have put on the track, even though I have chosen guitar effects, like amp, pedals, etc... Only after recording during playback, not pre, can i hear the effects I have chosen. Why is this? So pre recording and during recording, a clean tone. Play back the track, it's all there with the amp and sounds I have chosen. Frustrated.

Excuse this short reply, rehearsal in 30 minutes.
It sounds like you need to first turn off the Direct monitoring of the Interface. Most audio interfaces have a "direct no-latency" monitoring that actually takes place before the audio even goes to Logic, it's done within the interface. Different companies have different names for it, low-latency monitoring, direct monitoring....etc.
Next, open Logic's Preferences and I think with Logic-X it's under the General tab (everything I'm describing will be under the general or devices tabs).
Select Software monitoring, make sure you I/O buffer setting is at 128. Lower buffer settings mean less latency but use more CPU.

• How to play electric guitar through garageband

Hi,
Macbook Pro mid 2009 running OSX 10.10
GarageBand 10.0.3
I have seen on the internet that it is possible to connect my electric guitar to my Macbook Pro and then use the Amps and effects in GarageBand to produce different sounds and effects from my guitar.
I have tried with a couple of different cables (standard 1/4" with an adapter as well as a Rocksmith USB cable), but GarageBand is not producing any sound.
I have repeatedly checked my input and output Sound settings, the cables, making sure I have the cables plugged in properly, but still nothing.
I've been working on this for a week and I'm stumped!
Help appreciated.
Regards,
Jim P.

You are going to need a USB audio interface. There are so many good ones you can't go wrong with any of the newest big name interfaces. I personally like interfaces that are at least 2 in 2 out with both a ¼" and a XLR input. This way you can record instrument or mic or both at the same time.

• I am trying to run my electric guitar in garageband 11 but there is no options to modify the inputs/outputs to built

There is no option to modify the sound input/output to built-in input or built-in output. I'm guessing the electric guitar is not being registered. I am using a 1/8" mono -1/4" mono cable to go directly from the output jack on my electric to the headphone jack on a macbook pro. How can I get this to work?

When you use an external device for input, GB often automatically selects that same device for output. It's an ease-of-use feature for most external devices. If your device doesn't give you the option to output to speakers/headphones, you don't want GB to do that.
Within GB, go to GB>Preferences, Select the Audio/Midi tab. In the Drop-down under output, choose "Built-in Output" and connect your external speakers/headphones to the Mac's headphone port (Alternately, you could use system preferences to direct your Mac's audio-output to your speakers and select "System Setting" in GB Prefs. The Mac's own speakers aren't going to be nearly as much fun as running it to your big speakers/headphones).
Hope that makes sense...

• I can barely hear my ringer or Siri with my volume set all the way up.

I can barely hear my ringer and it's turned all the way up. I can't hear Siri at all but I can visually see that it's working. The ringer is completely silent when I turn the volume down two bars.

Tap Settings > General > Reset > Reset All Settings. If that doesn't work, create a backup then restore AS NEW. If it still doesn't work after restoring & wiping everything off, take it to an ARS or call tech support to get it replaced. Don't worry, all of your info will be backed up if you follow the steps in http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1766

• Problems recording electric guitar in Garageband

I'm fairly new to using Garageband. I have Garageband 09 on my Macbook Pro. I'm playing a Fender Telecaster and a Stratocaster and am going through an Edirol (USB) interface and using Guitar Rig 4 plugins for amp modeling.
I'm running into a few problems that I don't understand how to solve and am hoping someone can offer some help or advice.
First, when going through the Edirol, I notice that the Recording Level setting on the Track Info pane on the far right of the screen is not active. I'm assuming the Edirol interface is over-riding this. Is that normal when using an interface?
I use the input level knob on the Edirol to control the volume when I record (because the Recording Level is not active) and I keep it fairly low (about level 3). When I record the track using a clean guitar sound I watch the meter on the track pane on the left side of the arrange window. I adjust the settings so it never goes into red, and I watch to make sure it doesn't.
Then when I play back what I've recorded, it jumps into the red in a few spots.
I'm baffled by that. Is there any explanation and fix for this?
Also, the recording of the song (with drum loops and vocals on it) has some clicks or sounds like a scratchy phonograph needle. I thought it might be the sound breaking up from distortion, but they don't always correspond to when the meters hit the red zone.
What are these sounds, why are they appearing and how can I avoid/get rid of them?
Lastly, just about every amp setting using Guitar Rig 4 and Garageband's own amp models that have distortion (I use distortion on lead parts at times) have a terrible level of hiss and noise.
I've tried using the noise gate to get rid of it, but, while it silences the hiss and noise when you're not actually playing anything, the hiss is still very present when you are.
Also, if the noise gate is set too high, it kills any sustain. And the hiss is still there anyway when playing, although it's a bit less.
Is there some explanation for this, and any solutions? How can I get rid of this noise/hiss and still have a great sounding lead with sustain?
Thanks in advance to anyone who can offer any help.

Yes, that's how it works!
When I record the track using a clean guitar sound I watch the meter on the track pane on the left side of the arrange window. I adjust the settings so it never goes into red, and I watch to make sure it doesn't.
It's perfectly fine for the recording level to go into the read, actually that's what you want. Just make sure it never clips (the two little dots at the end of the meter scale lighting up).
Then when I play back what I've recorded, it jumps into the red in a few spots.
I'm baffled by that. Is there any explanation and fix for this?
Recording level and playback level are two different things. The latter depends on how you set your track's volume. Turn it down if it clips (again, red is fine.)
Maybe other people can comment on your distortion problems!

• Connecting Electric Guitar to Garageband on G5 iMac

I've seen other discussions about this, but cannot figure out this seemingly simple process.
-I connected the guitar via 1/4 to 1/8 cables into the "line in" port on the back of the iMac.
-I chose "real instrument" when adding a new track in garageband
-I made sure that the sound input preferences under system preferences correctly states "line in" (and not internal audio/speakers).
-I have the drop down menu set to "Monitor On" and the Sound menu to "Stereo"
(even when I mess with these settings nothing gets recorded).
When I hit record nothing comes through the computer - nothing gets recorded.
Do I need the Griffin iMac or similar device?
Any suggestions?

it depends which iMac you're using:

• Help, I can't play my electric guitar on my MacBook

I thought I had all the settings correct, but all I get is feedback. Any suggestions for getting somewhat decent sound? I tried this before on an iMac and it worked ok.
thanks

In system preferences, I used line-in for input and for output, internal speakers (the only choice). Volume in system preferences is mid to high. In preferences for GarageBand, for Audio/MIDI, I have built-in output and built-in input. For the effects for the guitar in the Real Instrument track, I have amp simulation checked.
And I have Monitor checked.
The guitar is connected to the MacBook via a cable in the audio port.
Am I missing anythihng?
I'm using Tiger operating system.

• Why can't I sign into my gmail ?? I tried all the posted suggestions including clearing cookies and cache.

I have tried all of the options suggested on this site and nothing works. I can get my mail on google chrome and internet explorer but not on firefox, WHY????

Hello,
'''Try Firefox Safe Mode''' to see if the problem goes away. [[Troubleshoot Firefox issues using Safe Mode|Firefox Safe Mode]] is a troubleshooting mode that turns off some settings and disables most add-ons (extensions and themes).
''(If you're using an added theme, switch to the Default theme.)''
If Firefox is open, you can restart in Firefox Safe Mode from the Help menu by clicking on the '''Restart with Add-ons Disabled...''' menu item:

If Firefox is not running, you can start Firefox in Safe Mode as follows:
* On Windows: Hold the '''Shift''' key when you open the Firefox desktop or Start menu shortcut.
* On Mac: Hold the '''option''' key while starting Firefox.
* On Linux: Quit Firefox, go to your Terminal and run ''firefox -safe-mode''
(you may need to specify the Firefox installation path e.g. /usr/lib/firefox)
''Once you get the pop-up, just select "'Start in Safe Mode"''
'''''If the issue is not present in Firefox Safe Mode''''', your problem is probably caused by an extension, and you need to figure out which one. Please follow the [[Troubleshoot extensions, themes and hardware acceleration issues to solve common Firefox problems]] article to find the cause.
''To exit Firefox Safe Mode, just close Firefox and wait a few seconds before opening Firefox for normal use again.''

• IOS5 or not ? I have been reading all the post here for the last few day and am not hearing to many people rave over IOS5. So what's the answer, update or stay as is.

Wondering what to do.

I'm on a first gen iPad and apart from the lack of multitasking gestures (which is only on the second gen), there is nothing that I've found that I don't like or won't be able to get used to. Apart from anything else the iCloud features will probably come in useful. You should also remember that people tend to post on support forums like these because they have problems and/or questions - those who havn't had problems don't have a reason to post.
But ultimately the choice is down to you - you don't have to update. You will find that over time apps will start to have iOS 5 as a requirement (the current versions of Pages, Numbers, Keynote already do), so at some point you will probably need to do so if one of your existing apps gets updates that you'd like to have, and/or a new app is released that you want - but you can wait until if/when that happens, the choice is yours.

• Can't connect to 192.168.1.1 with my macbook. Tried reading all the posts no luck.

I've read through tons of posts and still no solution. I have powered everything on and off. I've tried firefox, safari, and netscape. I still cannot connect to 192.168.1.1 I have a befw11s4 v2. Along with not being able to connect to the setup page, my internet signal strength goes up and down constantly even though I am right next to the router.

If something does not work there is usually an error message which explains the problem. Please post the exact error message you get.
When wired to the router, open a terminal window and enter "ifconfig en0". Please post the output of that command.
Next enter "ping 192.168.1.1" and post what happens. Again, if there is an error message post the exact error message.
