Can't hear my keyboard's instruments

I'm not sure when I lost the ability to hear the built-in instruments from my Yahama keyboard in LE 8 but the problem either happened after upgrading to Leopard or upgrading to LE 8. I'm getting a midi signal from the keyboard into logic (it's registering) but I cant hear anything. I can record audio regions but on playback no sounds emanate from them. It looks like the audio regions do contain waveforms also. I can connect a pair of headphones directly to the keyboard's output and hear just fine.
From that jack, I'm connected to the back of my Mac at the Audio IN port. I updated the to the latest universal Yamaha Midi driver yesterday but still no joy.
For starters, should the new tracks I create in order to use and hear my onboard piano instruments be midi or audio? I believe in LE 7, I just used and audio track and armed the record function - then good to go... Any ideas? Thanks.

It may be that your keyboard is not sending MIDI data on channel 1.
Can you reset the keyboard to factory defaults? Sometimes that solves problems like this.

  • Can't hear MIDI keyboard thru GarageBand (or anywhere else)

I have a year-old MacBook running Leopard, and a Midiman (now mAudio?)49 Keystation USB controller (keyboard). The MIDI setup utility recognizes one MIDI input, but I can't hear the keyboard in Garage Band 3 or any other app I use (Songworks II). I've tried different input settings in Garage Band preferences, System Preferences and in the Audio MIDI setup utility, to no avail. The same keyboard works fine on my iMac G4, running the same software. As I said, the keyboard is USB powered. Is it possible that the MacBook doesn't produce enough power to run it? I have some serious projects to do and would be grateful for help. Maybe I need a newer keyboard? Thanks.

Thanks for the replies. Turned out I needed new drivers.

  • I can't hear my keyboard when recording.

I have a Edirol Midi keyboard PCR-50 and I can record a software instrument with it but There is no monitor so I can't hear what I am recording. How do I turn on the monitoring?
Unlike when recording a real instrument the stereo/mono/monitor control in the lower right window is not there for the midi/software insruments.

  • Can't hear usb keyboard

Hi, i can't hear my m-audio keystation49e keyboard when i press the notes on it.
I have only opened the tutorial song at the moment, as i have only just got logic pro7.2 and am still using the tutorial song to experiment and learn.
I went to audio midi setup and my keyboard is recognised and selected i also clicked apply on it and then clicked test sound and it played so i know its working.
if its any help, i cant find my keyboard in the logic set up assistant when i click add at the midi devices part, so i just selected midi in - my keyboard.
    thanks for any help

Ok, I may be "blind" but I think I've figured out what you have to do. Open the Tutorial file (ok, you probably figured that out already). From the main overhead Window menu, selected Environment. If the environment window shows you a graphic of a keyboard and cabling you can skip the next step, if it shows a mixer do the following. On the left side of the environment window it will say Audio, hold the mouse button down until you have a menu and select MIDI-Instr instead of Audio. Now you should have a graphic representation of a keyboard and some cabling. In the upper left of the map there is an iconic representation marked Physical Input Object. Rubber band select that bad boy and hit delete. If your keyboard now works, save this entire file with a clever name like, Newtorial and continue to follow the manual from there. Don't worry, the only way you can screw things up is if you alter the tutorial file and then save it with it's original title. If this works, please let us know! If not, calling Apple support is not a bad idea at all, they're very pleasant and helpful and based in Texas which is a much bigger place than New York. They've helped me a number of times, even though I'm "blind". Good luck and keep us apprised.

  • Can't hear midi keyboard

i plugged my midi keyboard into logic express just like i did in garageband. i can see the notes but i cant hear them! how do i fix this? i've tried everything i can think of and i didnt find it in the manual. i wan't to lay down some drum beats and stuff but it wont let me do it manually w/ my keyboard. please help me!

    Mike,
You may want to run the Setup Assistant. That helped me out when starting. Do this by:
    Logic Pro>Preferences>Start Logic Setup Assistant
If you have done this already, be sure you have selected the correct Audio Driver. To check this go to:
    Logic Pro>Preferences>Audio
Then click the "Drivers" tab. Make sure "Built in" is selected in the Driver drop down menu, if you want playback to go to the laptop speakers.
If all of this is correct, be sure that you have an "Audio Instrument" selected in the track you see the MIDI notes. To do this:
    1) Locate an "Audio Instrument" track. Usually called something like "Inst 1".
    2) Click on the Audio Instrument track in the Arrange. A fadder should appear on the left hand side of the Arrange. If it does not try typing "P" or going to the local menu and click View>Parameters
    3) in the Input slot of the Audio Instument track's fader, click and hold the top slot (just below I/O) follow the menus to:
    Stereo>Logic>EFM1
    4) Now play your MIDI keyboard and see if it plays back.
    Hope this is helpful,
    Mitch

  • After I use Siri the volume on my keyboard is all the way up and I can't hear the keyboard clicks even though keyboard clicks is on why does this happen after I use siri

    I need answers people please!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It sounds to me like your keyboard has been damaged and needs to be repaired or replaced.  Can you try an external keyboard?

  • Unable to hear and record software instruments

I can only hear and record my Korg TR Music Workstation instruments. How can I hear/record the software instruments (from Logic Express 9, Garage Band/Jam Packs)? I have my Korg connected to the computer through an M-Audio recording interface.

    You can hear them by:
    1. Making sure your midi input is functioning   (see a little movement in the transport box)
    2. Selecting a virtual instrument in the box just above the 'out' box above the track volume slider
    3. Play the chosen instrument from midi keyboard,   or draw a region, open,   play vertical keyboard on Left side with mouse.
I hope you don't really try to record instruments in the Jam Packs because they're not instruments.
As far as I know , they're loops.

  • Can't hear double-tracked keyboard in playback

I recorded a piano track as a software instrument, and had no problems with hearing it in playback. Then, I duplicated the track and played the same thing. Now, when I try to play through the song, I can only hear one or the other, or neither. When I select one of the tracks and restart from the beginning I can hear it, but as soon as I deselect it, I can't hear it. I have gotten both to play, but only very briefly before one track cuts out. Is this a software bug, or am I missing some setting?

Thanks! I was racking my brain with this! where in
the menu is this feature? Or in the manual?
    No problem. The menu is:
    View > Audio Scrubbing
But as I say to any editor learning FCP, if you go to a menu item more than 3 times in 10 minutes... memorize the keystroke command. You'll get much quicker.
For a list of keyboard commands:
    Help > Quick Reference
(although I almost never find anything quickly in that quide)
    Good luck!

  • I can see midi instruments in playback but can't hear them. How?

I have a Macbook Pro and I'm using Logic express for the first time.
I am recording guitar tracks and playing them back using an M-Audio firewire 410.
However when I try to do anything with a midi instrument I can't hear it at all. I'm seeing the notes that i hit on the keyboard appear in the track and I can see the light bumping up and down in time to the notes.
Yet at no point will ANY of the audio emerge for the midi instruments.
This all works fine with Garage band and Reason and the LE 7.2.3 download has been installed.
Any idea where I'm going wrong.

I am having the same problem or a similar problem. I'm running Logic Express 7.2.3. on an 800MHz PowerPC G4, using Mac OS X version 10.4.9. I've gone into Logic Pro > Preferences > Audio and the Core Audio Tab is checked "Enabled." I've entered notes as midi data on track 18 (Polysynth) and can see them on the score screen, and when I press "play" the verticle line moves across the notes but I hear nothing through the speakers attached to the computer. I've also tried the Caps Lock Keyboard and never get any sound through the speakers no matter which Audio Instrument I select. The only sound I've ever obtained from the program has been the clicks when the record button is pressed. I have been searching the manuel and Orren Morton's LOGIC PRO 7 POWER! but have found nothing that works. Any assistance that anyone can give will be appreciated.

  • Can't hear my software instrument well when recording.

I did a pro tools session in a recording studio. I don't know Pro tools so I asked the engineer if he could make the recording into a file that I could put into Garageband. He did that and I loaded the individual parts into Garageband. However, when I try to put down a keyboard part while listening to the other instruments, I can't really hear the keyboard. I put the volume all the way up on the keyboard region in the mixer (and the computer) but it still sounds low.
Do I have to get a pre amp or something to boast the volume of the USB keyboard? If so, what would could I use that won't cost an arm and a leg. thanks.

you're recording MIDI, not audio, you can't "pre-amp" the digital signal.
you can raise the instrument volume a bit more:

  • Can't Hear GM sounds from external Keyboard

My system set up is a Mac Mini OS X 10.9.5   with 2.3 GHz intel Core i5 and 5 Gb of Memory . A Focusrite Saffire Pro 14 interface.
I am using a M-Audio Keystation 61es connected via the USB to to the Mac,( and have done for the last 2 years ),
when I was using it in Garageband it worked perfectly as a 'Plug-in & Go' keyboard and i could access and play both the GM sounds on board or the GB sound Library.
Since Upgrading to Logic Pro I can only play Midi voices and loops from Logic, although it recognises the Model of keyboard and allocates the relevant channel, it also allows me to see the onboard menu of GM sounds, and registers in the volume of the track a signal coming through the relevant channel, so i know its communicating somewhere.
But I can't hear ANY of the GM sounds from the Keystations on board library.
Have looked at all the Midi Settings i can find in Logic and followed some paths suggested in the various Logic Manuals, but still no Noise !
I am no Techno Head so please! if you know what it is that I am NOT doing , explain it the simplest way you can.
Thanks in advance for any help that can solve this Problem
    MyKee.G

As far as I can tell, the M-Audio Keystation 61es does not have any form of on board sound generation. So whatever you heard in Garageband was synthesized by GB. In the same way you'll have to set up a virtual instrument in Logic to generate the sound.
Apart from that, it sounds like you are not really aware of the difference between Midi controller data and audio data, or at least the way they are routed. The midi controller has no way to send audio to logic through a midi connection. If it had on-board sounds, you'd have to route the audio explicitly to logic using an audio interface or in rare cases using audio over the USB connection that also does midi. In any case, you'd have to route the sound manually. The external instrument plugin in logic allows you to do that easily. But again, I don't think that applies to your situation.
    Cheers,
    Jazz

  • Can't Hear Keyboard

I'm fairly new at Logic Pro. I just bought an M-Audio Keyboard and I can't hear it when I'm playing. Can someone show me how to set this up???

Assuming the keyboard you bought is a MIDI controller, you need to assign a plug-in to your corresponding audio instrument track. The basic operation of getting it all up and running is in the "Getting Started" supplement that came with your big box. I suggest a careful look at that to get through the basic set up and introductory portion of working with Logic.
If you're still having difficulty after that, there are plenty of people here who'll be happy to help!

    Hey shahbazfromgbr,
Thanks for the question, and welcome to Apple Support Communities.
I understand you are having issues with sound output on your iPhone 4S. For troubleshooting steps, the following article provides the best information:
iPhone: Can't hear through the receiver or speakers
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1630
    1. Verify that there is nothing plugged in to the headset jack, including headsets, headphones, or adapters.
    2. Make sure the Ring/Silent switch is not switched to silent.
    3. While on the Home screen, adjust the volume buttons. If you see the icon below, indicating that headphones are attached, there may be debris or an object lodged in the headset jack:
    4. Check the headset jack. If there is an object lodged in the headset jack that is not easily removed, have the iPhone serviced to remove object.
    5. For Original iPhone: If there is light debris, such as lint, in the headset jack, try connecting a pair of headphones to the headset jack and then remove the headphones. Repeat this several times to remove the debris.
    6. If you have installed a protective film on the display, either ensure that the receiver is not covered or remove the film completely.
    7. Check the receiver mesh (which is on the top front of the device, above the display). If it appears blocked, use a clean, small, dry, soft-bristled brush to carefully and gently brush away any debris.
    8. If you have paired with a Bluetooth headset that is nearby, either use the headset or turn Bluetooth off (choose Settings > General > Bluetooth).
    9. Restart the iPhone.
    10. If restarting the iPhone doesn't resolve the issue, try restoring the device.
    11. If the issue persists, go to the Service Answer Center - iPhone for information on service.
    Thanks,
    Matt M.

  • Can't hear my real instrument tracks. Just the reverb in the background.

I opened a file, and when I play it, now I can't hear any real instrument tracks. I just hear the reverb of the tracks. Any clues on how to fix this?
