Can't hear my own voice through the receiver

Just got a 3G iPhone. It works great except that when I'm on a call, I don't hear myself through the receiver. Same if I use the headphones. I can tap on the microphone and nothing comes through. I can hear others fine, and they can hear me. I understand that this ability to hear yourself is called "side tone" and the 3G is is supposed to have good side tone volume, but I have none. It's weird trying to talk to people when your own voice isn't fed back at all!
I tried restoring the iPhone and that didn't help. Any one else having the problem? Anyone have a suggestion for solving it?

Yes, they do do that. It is a subtle effect that most people don't even notice -- until it's not there. You can find out more here:
