Can't hear phone calls, can't open messaging app.  I've tried everything.

Okay, so every time I receive a phone call, I can't hear them very loudly and my volume is at it's highest.  When I make a call, it doesn't even ring.  Last, but not least, when I try to open my messaging app, my phone freezes and then the app closes.  I've tried rebooting, restoring, turning off and on, and closing apps.  My phone is broken in the least, it merely has a single scratch, but I've almost had it for two years.  Help please?

I just started having this same exact problem. I just replaced the screen on my phone too but it had still been working for a few days and then now this. Im thinking water might have gotten into it because the new screen did not come with the metal screen that goes inside the speaker hole if u know what im talking about. But also im thinking a wire might have come loose i side

You can try a hard reset by holding down the home button and the lock button at the same time until the apple appears. If that doesn't work I think you should definitely go into an apple store.

  • TS1631 can't hear phone calls and caller can't hear me

My volume is fine during games, videos, etc.  But I can't hear during telephone calls and callers can't hear me? Any suggestions

Unfortunately the restore didn't help. Took the phone to the AT&T store a little bit ago and they asked if I had done the same things. They said that I have to take it to an Apple store. Apparently the contract AT&T has with Apple only allows them to sell the phone and nothing else – no warranty, repair, etc.
    Thanks again for your help

  • Caller Can't hear phone calls

Sometimes when I make a call the other person cannot hear me, I can hear them perfectly.
I've tried using a headset, a bluetooth headset and speaker, none work unfortunately.
I've been told there is a crackling / distortion noise when this happens.
Weird thing is voice calls work perfect for ages then (seemingly) this randomly happens.
Any advice? other than get a new phone lol

Just been trying out Handoff and AirDrop between my Mac and iPhone. Both work fine. I have Bluetooth turned on on both devices but the caller still can't hear me when I take a call on my Mac.
If I switch over to my iPhone part way through a call (via the green banner on my iPhone) the caller at the other end can hear me fine, it is just through my Mac. Tested the microphones - all working ok.
I'm using an iPhone 6 Plus with iOS 8.0.2 if that helps any.
Maybe iOS 8.1 might fix the issue on Monday.

  • Can not hear phone calls unless using speaker or headphones

Today, my speaker stopped working for phone calls. I can hear my phone ring, I can listen to music and can hear normal text/email sounds. But when I go to answer a call or make a call, it is just dead silence. I can use headphones to hear though. My iPhone 4 is 1.5 years old and has not given me any real problems before. My apple care has run out and I would love a simple fix that won't cost me $100. I have not used speakers and I spend about 30 minues on the phone looking for a solution. I have restart my phone 5+ times and have restored my phone to a previous backup. Thanks.

    Hi,
Got same issue. Even a factory reset failed.
Is this a hardware issue or software issue? Please help.

  • Can't hear phone calls/button sounds or use speaker phone lg extravert

I tried to make a phone call but can't hear any ringing, the call goes through but nothing happens. My volume for the earpiece is at maximum and so is the main volume on my phone, I can't hear the button sounds either. If I hit the play button, I can hear the ringtone it plays for volume check and it will also play the power up and power down tones. I tried to use speaker phone, but when I touch the button it won't work. I took the battery out and that did not help at all. I also reset my phone, and that also did not help. I checked my alarm setting since I use that frequently and it works just fine too. I am extremely unhappy because I had this phone replaced in August because the camera stopped working and now it looks like I'll have to do it again but out of warranty.

I'm glad you still have some way to hear the audio on your phone, but let's get that speaker working! The most common reason for the phone's sound to stop working would be the switch on the side has been nudged accidently. Try to enable then disable Silent Mode http://bit.ly/Xhs40k to get the volume working again. Also, try to simply restart your iPhone by holding the power switch and home button together for 10 seconds. Nothing gets erased but it helps cleat out any temporary glitch your phone may experience.
If you're still having trouble, the next best step would be to reset the phone's settings http://bit.ly/HWRbPl. This does erase information from your phone, so make sure to back up http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1766 your iPhone information first.
Keep me posted if you continue to have audio trouble.

My iPhone only has "headphone" volume, no "speaker" volume. How do I fix this so I can hear phone calls?

The phone may be stuck in headset mode. Rapidly plug and unplug a headset 10x to free up the switch inside the jack.

  • Any idea why I can only hear a caller when I'm using speaker phone?

Does anyone know why I can only hear a caller when I am using speaker phone?

    Hi goodferg,
The troubleshooting steps below may help you with the sound issue you are having with your iPhone 4:
iPhone: Can't hear through the receiver or speakers
    Resolution
Verify that there is nothing plugged in to the headset jack, including headsets, headphones, or adapters.
Make sure the Ring/Silent switch is not switched to silent.
While on the Home screen, adjust the volume buttons. If you see the icon below, indicating that headphones are attached, there may be debris or an object lodged in the headset jack:
Check the headset jack. If there is an object lodged in the headset jack that is not easily removed, have the iPhone serviced to remove object.
For Original iPhone: If there is light debris, such as lint, in the headset jack, try connecting a pair of headphones to the headset jack and then remove the headphones. Repeat this several times to remove the debris.
If you have installed a protective film on the display, either ensure that the receiver is not covered or remove the film completely.
Check the receiver mesh (which is on the top front of the device, above the display). If it appears blocked, use a clean, small, dry, soft-bristled brush to carefully and gently brush away any debris.
If you have paired with a Bluetooth headset that is nearby, either use the headset or turn Bluetooth off (chooseSettings > General > Bluetooth).
    Restart the iPhone.
If restarting the iPhone doesn't resolve the issue, try restoring the device.
If the issue persists, go to the Service Answer Center - iPhone for information on service.
    Hope this helps!

when i answer my phone i can barely hear the caller, volume is turned up

    Hi saintmary82,
If you are having a hard time hearing people through the receiver, take a look at the article below for some suggestions to get it sorted out. Start with cleaning the receiver and making sure your iPhone is up to date. If you continue to have issues, then you may want to contact Apple Support for further assistance.

I can't hear my phone calls unless I put it on speaker. Tried cleaning by blowing on earpiece and headphone jack and pushing near front camera and earpiece speaker...no luck. HELP!

If you've tried everything mentioned you probably have a failed earpiece. One option is to get a BlueTooth headset and use it for all calls. It will be cheaper than the $199 out-of-warranty replacement price from Apple (if it's still in warranty or AppleCare it will be free). Good BT headsets can be had for around $40. And it will hold you over until the Next New Thing from Apple is available

try to switch to loudspeaker mode. If both loudspeaker and normal mode doesn't work, then ur speaker would be damaged. Visit your nearest apple service center.

  • 7936 phone - can't hear user calling in

We have 7936 conference phones in place and are finding when someone calls into the conference phone, we can answer the call and the far end can hear us but we can not hear them.
Can not see anything that would cause this in configuration.

We experienced this a few months ago. It seemed like the issue would occur seven days (the DHCP lease period) after the DHCP server (a router) was reloaded. The TAC said it was an issue with the phone load, and told us to use a newer load 3.3(10). We still had issues and ended up assigning the conf phones static IPs and we haven't had another one-way audio problem (knock on wood).

  • My Iphone 4s earpiece is not working that good, can't hear the caller too good, any suggestions? Has this happened to anyone?

Does anyone have Suggestions on improving my earpiece? Can;t hear the caller when I call someone or they call me?

I have had this happen to me on 3GS, 4 and 4s.   Usually the solution is one of the following:
1-  If  your volume indicator says  headphones even though they are not plugged in, then:
Stick your headphones into the headphone jack and then remove quickly.
    2. If that does not work Power your phone off. Then when restarting Reset the phone by pressing the home button and the power button at the same time until the apple logo appears.
    3. Make sure you have not chosen to send audio to an Airplay device such as Apple Tv.
Hope one of these works for you

  • Can't hear my caller after I remove my iphone headphones

Has anyone else had this problem?
you are listening to your music using th iphone headphones, then you remove your headphones from the iphone, when you get a call you can't hear the caller and they can't hear you. I discovered that the only way to fix this problem is to re-insert the headphone and click the mute button on the headphone! It seems that when you use the headphones and click mute and then remove your headphones it remains stuck on mute, not allowing you to be heard on an outgoing or incoming call!!!!!
What's up with that this? is my second iphone and it has happened to both my phones. It's a good thing I had my headphones with me, otherwise my phone would be useless or worse yet if it was an emergency I would not be able to call 911!

That is the solution so far other than a restore.
FWIW It worked with a Belkin audio cord as well. I tried it a few times in and out with no luck.
    Here's what worked for me:
    1. Start ipod and pause on a song.
    2. Insert cord or headset.
    3. Hit play.
    4. Hit Pause.
    5. Remove cord or headset.
    6. Hit play....
After (6) it didn't do much but then I noticed the volume slider grab a life of its own. When it settled down... all was working again.
What a pain in the rear.
Apple if you reading this fix it. I happened to get stuck at work after listening to music the night before... when I tried to make a call, guess what. All day without audio.
    Brutal!

  • I can't make phone calls anymore

    hello everybody,
i've got one of the first iphone 5. and since yesterday i can't make phone calls anymore.
if i want to call someone, the other phone rings, but if he accepts the call there is just a very loud static rush noise. that was yesterday and this morning, now there is nothing besides sometimes a static rush. i can't hear anything and the other doesn't hear anything.
i've checked the microphone by using siri or voice recorder. there it works fine. everything is fine, just the phone calls don't work.
even if i try to make phone calls using bluetooth handsfree it doesn't work.
i resetter my phone completely and set it up as a new phone but still the same.
i just don't know what to do. i need my phone for 6 more weeks until iphone 6 is ready
    thank you for your help.
    greetings from germany

The same thing is happening with my wife's iPhone 4 and we can't figure it out. When placing a call, the screen freezes and she needs to restart the entire phone.
She upgraded to 5.01 this morning over the air while it was plugged in. Immediately afterwards, this problem started happening. We've tried restarting the phone several times and plugged in to iTunes but there's nothing she can do do to fix it.
    Any help is greatly appreciated!
