Can't hear text-to-speech through USB DSP headset

MBP5,3 OSX10.7.1
Using a noise canceling Plantronics USB headset (DSP-500), I've noticed that text-to-speech audio disappears (or is badly garbled) when played through the headset. Interestingly, changing voices among several choices in the Speech preference pane determines whether the voice is completely absent, or badly garbled (very slow). Audio is fine via speakers or via earphone jack, but when played through USB I get nothing. Using CLI "say" command in terminal also hangs. As soon as USB jack is pulled, the command completes.
I think it has something to do with the DSP in this particular headset (noise canceling) but I don't have a non-DSP headset handy to check this. Strange part is that this was not an issue with Snow Leopard.
It would be nice to be able to use headset for this audio as I use it for everything else in a noisy environment. Can anyone verify that this is not a problem with other USB headsets before I resort to another purchase?

Thank you. You're right, I didn't see the exact location you were describing: I went to Dictation & Speech
I tried to change it again and it wouldn't let me change it back to control + v so left it as control + a.
I did as you said (below), it spoke in Pages, so thank you.
But then I went back to Dictation & Speech to make them the same:
Tested in Pages... 'BEEP!' So I set it back to Control + A.
So now Control+A speaks as it used to - able to start and stop speech - only cannot be used in iWork apps.
And Control+S starts speaking in any app, but does not stop speaking unless I press Control+A. So...
Thank you, I guess you solved my problem, but now I have two sets of combinations for speech.
Control + A (Chrome, Finder, etc) start or stop speech
Control + S (Any app) start speech
I tried inputing 'Stop Speaking' in Shortcuts, but to no avail...

Can not get Text-to-Speech to work

I can not get Text-to-Speech to work. In "Settings", I can go into "Voice input & output", then to "Voice Output; Text-to-speech settings" and then to "Install voice data; Install the voice data required for speech synthesis" but it is "grayed out". I have downloaded Pico TTS several times and I have soft-reset and hard-reset the device several times. Still no text-to-speech
Any thoughts on what I can do to get text to speech to work?

Did you activate InCar in Vlingo? I just checked this and it works for me. Once you activate InCar, you should hear "Vlingo InCar".
If Vlingo InCar doesn't work for you, have you considered getting another Bluetooth headset that has the ability to read texts to you, like the Blueant Q2?

I can't get text-to-speech to work in Mountain Lion

I am running a MacBook Pro Retina with mountain lion and I can't get text-to-speech to work. I have selected the text and pressed the key to initiate it, but it just doesn't start to talk.

I'm having the same problem. It's as if my iPhone and MacBook Pro now have two separate calendars.
Basically, I have a MacBook Pro (Mountain Lion, 13", late 2011) that I sync via USB with an iPhone 4S (iOS 5.1.1). Before upgrading to Mountain Lion, all of my iCal events would sync flawlessly. But none of the events I've created in iCal (Calendars) since upgrading have synced to the iPhone. Likewise, no new events that I create on the iPhone Calendar will sync to iCal. Also, changes to an existing event (even one created before upgrading to Mountain Lion) don't get synced either.
Everything else seems to be syncing just fine though (music, apps, contacts, etc).

You should turn off "Auto input monitoring". I only have L8 and there you find it under Options->audio->Auto Input monitoring. Would guess that its in the same place in L9

I am having the exact same problem with my Belkin hub after upgrading to Mountain Lion. The only temporary fix is to shutdown and restart the computer. It then works again, but then for some reason after awhile it stops working again and you have to shut down again. Strange. Any possible permanent fix?

Try plugging it it to see if the screen comes on. If not then you're screen is damaged.

The only thing I can find is rumors from the May-June timeframe saying that iOS 7 would support it. I have recetly downloaded captivate 7, but need to find the right file to allow mw to create slides with a text to speech function.

Click Audio, then click Speech Management. On the bottom left of the window there should be a link to download the files. Hope this helps.

Can't hear just one person through my iPhone 4

Okay, so lets see if this works. So I've had my iphone 4 for about a year and a half, I've never really had issues beside the normal glitching and having calls drop here and there. Recently I've had an issue with my iphone connecting with just one individual. Yes, I know it sounds weird but keep reading. I have been able to make calls and recieve phone calls fine, however I cannot with just one single individual. They to also only have the same problem with me, however the only difference is they can hear me but I cant hear them or anything. We're able to text and send picture messages without any issues.
Now sometimes when I try to call them, itll ring twice and then the line just goes dead, but thats usually them picking it up. I cannnot hear them at all. I've already done the reset on my phone and I've already contacted apple about this issue and their about as lost as I am because it doesnt make sense that this is only happening with one individual. I've also blew out the speakers and such like people have suggested. I use my head phones that came with my speaker, and ive connected and reconnected them incase my iphone thought they were plugged in.
Let me give you a little bit more info. They have an android phone, we have the same carrier which is verizon and they live in another state (not sure if thats helpful). I'm completely lost because this has been going on for about 4 days now and its driving me crazy. This happened a few weeks ago, however it magically fixed its self ( im thinking it was because I had bad service). If anyone has any solutions that might help, please, please let me know.

The whole issue is that I cannot hear this person, but I can hear everyone else.
That proves that the problem is either in the other party's phone or his carrier. If you can hear everyone else, your phone is OK.

How can I hear the MIDI Out through my computer?

A basic question, I'm sure, but my MIDI controller is sending input to Logic, and Logic is recording the MIDI fine, but I can't work out how to get the Out to come through my computer's speakers. It just says 'no out' in the Transport Bar.

There is no such concept as "hearing MIDI". MIDI is a control protocol, it doesn't make sound.
To hear sound, you must route the MIDI data to an instrument, which reacts to MIDI messages such as "Play a middle C note" and actually plays itself with it's current patch to make sound.
Select/create a software instrument track. Choose which instrument you want on it. Now that instrument will play when you send MIDI data to it, and the resultant audio output will go to whatever audio interface you have chosen in Logic, whether your internal speakers, or whatever other audio interface you may be using.
I really recommend starting with the Getting Started manual to illustrate these basic concepts if you are new to this.

Can't hear my own voice through the receiver

Just got a 3G iPhone. It works great except that when I'm on a call, I don't hear myself through the receiver. Same if I use the headphones. I can tap on the microphone and nothing comes through. I can hear others fine, and they can hear me. I understand that this ability to hear yourself is called "side tone" and the 3G is is supposed to have good side tone volume, but I have none. It's weird trying to talk to people when your own voice isn't fed back at all!
I tried restoring the iPhone and that didn't help. Any one else having the problem? Anyone have a suggestion for solving it?

Why can I hear text tone while talking and not a pause like Iphone 4s?

I have my phone 6 text tone set to a song. Well, I was talking to my aunt and I received a text message but I could hear the ring tone in my ear. I have never had that problem with Iphone 4s. It was basically a general pause to tell me I had an incoming text. Anyone else having this problem? Please help. If I can figure this out I am taking the phone back.

You can turn off sending pictures messages except as iMessages by going to Settings>Messages>MMS Messaging and setting it to "Off".
