Can't Hide Aperture During Vault Backup

Running the latest Mac OS and Aperture on a Mac Pro with a ton of RAM. Whenever I run Aperture's vault backup (I backup onto another hard drive), Aperture is essentially locked up during the backup. I can't even hide the app in the background as I continue to use my Mac. I can use other apps in front of Aperture, but the desktop is always hidden by the Aperture window, and this makes it a lot more difficult to access apps and windows in the Finder, especially if Aperture is backing up for a long time.
This has been true for all versions of Aperture that I've owned, if I remember, back to 1.0.
Does anyone else have this problem? Is there some workaround?

So it's not just me, eh?
I didn't know spaces would help. Thanks, I'll give that a try.

  • Quitting Aperture During Vault Update

    Hello,
I am using Aperture 3 in OS 10.6.8.  The library has about 70k photos (managed) on an external FireWire drive.  There are 3 vaults, two on external USB 2 drives and one on our iMac 27".  I usually backup the vaults one at a time since the USBs are so slow.  But this time I did them all at once and Aperture has been working for about 72 hours.  The progress bar is about an inch from the end and not progressing but is "rippling" normally.  The two external vault drives cycle on and off on a regular basis.  Activity Monitor indicates Aperture is functioning.  My problem is that I am going to have to disconnect the library drive in the next few days.  If the update is not finished then is it OK to use the Terminal command recommended by leonieDF in the Aperture User Tips ("If Aperture is unresponsive, how to avoid force quitting?")  to quit Aperture?  I assume I would have to recreate the vaults (on FW drives this time!) but I am concerned about possible effects on the library.  Any thoughts or suggestions on this?  Many thanks!
    Mike

I would just go ahead and delete the  vaults in Finder with Aperture CLOSED. Then start Aperture and remove the vaults in Aperture.
When a disk that is being used gets full it is hard to predict what behavior you will see and it might be different each time it happens.  So it is possible that the symptoms you had might have been caused by running out of disk space, really no way to say for certain. What you can say is that running out of or low of disk space is a condition you really want to avoid.
The vault like the library is really a folder containing lots of folders and files so deleting it is not as simple a task as deleting a single file. However when I go to remove a vault in Aperture I get the following dialog
Which shows both Remove and Remove and Delete options. If I select just Remove the vault is removed from Aperture but remains on the disk. Did you not see the same thing?
Anyway given all you've been through you're doing pretty good. You have your library intact and a backup of it. I'd just go ahead and delete the vaults make sure you have enough room on the disk and then create new vaults. You should be good to go after that,
    good luck

  • Is there any software can do compression during file backup

In my hp computer, there is much data in it because of my work. I want to backup my important files to ensure data safety. Due to my computer disk space limitation, i want some useful software which owns compression function. Could you helpme? I am urgent. Thanks.

The paid version of Macrium Reflect offers compression options whether it be an image backup or file back up on three different levels.  see this::

I recently moved my Aperture Library file to an external hard drive.  Can I now create a vault to be saved on my Time Capsule for the Aperture library on this external hard drive?

One thing to bear in mind, if you are using Time Machine on your Time Capsule and have it set so the TM backup includes your external drive, you will effectively be backing up your Aperture library twice on the same drive, once with Time Machine and once with the vault. This isn't a problem unless you start to run out of space.
Another thing to note, vaults on network drives used to be flaky (i.e. not really supported) and required workarounds to be able to use them. I'm not sure if this has changed, but I just managed to create a vault on my TC ok.

  • How can I restore a single image from an aperture time machine backup, do I have to restore the entire library? that does not make sense

I hope there has been found a more efficiant solution for this,  how can I restore a single image from an aperture time machine backup, I really hope I don't have to restore the entire library? that does not make sense
    any suggestions?

Did you try browsing your backups in the Finder ?  That is, do not go and "Enter Time Machine".  Instead, navigate to your Time Machine backup via Finder and then manually go to the time period (by folder name) you are looking for ... when you find your Aperture library you can then "Show Package Contents" and find the Master you are looking for.

If you don't have a backup then the only possible solution is to go back to the store and see if they can get your old phone and create a backup of that. I know very often that Apple employees will wipe the returned iPhones clean before shipping them back to wherever they ship them.
When you say your old phone was "broken" does this mean it is dead and won't turn on?
Do you have a Time Machine backup of your computer, or a clone that might have this info on it?
Other than that I hate to say you may be out of luck. Time Machine and/or a cloning program performed regularily will inevitably save your a** in situations like this.
    Good luck

  • How can I retrieve pictures, lost from my iphone during a backup?

How can I retrieve pictures, lost from my iphone during a backup?

The photos could have gone a couple of different places ...but it is unlikely that they are lost forever.  It kind of depends how your Backup was done.  With many Computer-based iTunes connections, your Computer Photo App will actually open first when you connect your iPhone and the photo transfer will happen between the iPhone and the App.  Assuming that isn't what happened in your case, but you did Backup on iTunes, you could reconnect to iTunes and then click on your iPhone button on the Computer screen ...typically the iTunes Summary screen will show up ...but you can tab-through the various iTunes Screens and find the Photo page.  You could check your options and see if you have a Manual Sync setting regarding iTunes to iPhoone ...this would mean you have to select the Photos you want to download to the iPhone during the Sync.

  • One button backup of images (similar to Aperture's Vault)

I own both Apertue, and Lightroom...I use lighroom now and prefer it overall, but still miss aperture's "Vault" feature, which allows me to backup all files with the push of a button...would love to see this soon...thanks

Assuming you have a filesharing connection established between your Mac and PC you should be able to use Disk Utilities to create a disk image (select the Restore Tab) and set the PC as your destination drive. I wouldn't want to do this over WiFi but with a fast Ethernet connection it shouldn't be too painfully long.
Note: This isn't something I've tested so I cannot guarantee it will work. It would be much better to use an external drive and TimeMachine to make incremental backups. You underestimate how often programs get updates and your configurations change. Unless you keep a huge chunk of your Library folder linked to DropBox when the day comes that you need that back up you are likely to discover that a) your one time backup is much less helpful than you thought it would be and b) DropBox takes a long time to move everything from the cloud to your hard drive.

  • Lost Aperture during backup

I had everything on my external harddrive and backup all applications and files using Time machine.
In the process I lost aperture... I have the serial number but where can I download actual program from apple website???

If it is Aperture 3, download the Trial installer disk image - you can unlock it with your serial number.
You can download the Aperture Trial here:
    Aperture 3.1 Trial
After installing it, use the -menu > Software Update to upgrade to the latest version, before you try to run Aperture.
Then launch Aperture and enter your Aperture serial number and any previous serial numbers, if your Aperture licence key is an  upgrade serial number.

  • Number of System Log Errors Increasing During Nightly Backup - What Can Be Done?

Right now, I'm getting quite a number of warnings and errors with my nightly (wbadmin) backups to external USB drive using Windows 8.1 and the Spring Update.  Fortunately, the VSS-integrated system image backups are still sound, but it seems as though
Windows 8.1 is becoming less and less aware and tolerant of them.  That's not right!
With Windows 8.1 before the Spring Update I was seeing the warnings, but not the FilterManager errors.  The update brought the errors.
Perhaps not too many Windows 8 users use wbadmin start backup -vssFull commands to do their backups, but I'm sure a lot of folks running Server 2012 do.
What can be done to make the backup process smoother and eliminate these warnings and errors?
Here's the specific list of warnings / errors I got from last night, which started at 2:00am and ran to 4:26am:
As usual, clicking the Event Log Online Help button yields:  "We're sorry, but the page you requested could not be found.  You can search on TechNet for more information."  Microsoft, you know that needs to be fixed too, right?
The specific command I'm using, via the Task Scheduler, is:
wbadmin start backup -allCritial -vssFull -quiet -backupTarget:G:\
For those who might suggest 3rd party backup, bear in mind I very much want the VSS integration that Windows Backup provides, and while wbadmin is producing backups that can actually be restored I can ignore these warnings and errors.  But it would
be nice to not have them.
And yes, I've considered 3rd party backup solutions, but while wbadmin is producing VSS-integrated system image backups that can be restored from the Windows startup recovery environment I'd prefer those.

The errors suddenly stopped on their own, but the warnings continue.
As with most software issues, the errors came back again, specifically after a reboot mandated by yet another Windows Update.  I'm assuming they stopped before because the Filter Manager just gave up, or maybe the volume numbers got too high (notably
the volume numbers started over again at a lower number).

  • Can I stop/pause a vault update?

Okay, I've used vaults for a while but I recently moved my library around and ended up recreating my vault. I think my library is around 250GB and it is taking FOREVER to update. I have already had to force quit Aperture a couple of times when it couldn't finish the vault update overnight, but this time I left it running on my iMac for 24 hours (so far) and it is still not complete. I just cannot wait any longer, I need to use the machine. Does anyone know ift there is a way to stop/pause the vault update and return at a later time? Obviously I can force quit Aperture, but I can't imagine force quitting in the middle results in a very reliable Vault. So, if there's any advice here I would really appreciate it. I mean, time machine can pause in the middle as can many backup apps, I just don't know if I can use something that requires over a day of continuous use to just backup my files!
Along that same line, does anyone have any opinions on using a different backup app like Carbon Copy Cloner for my Aperture library? I've used TM in the past with poor results (it was very hard to get back the data I needed to recover). Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

    What Doug said.
Note that Masters need only be backed up once (but to multiple backup locations) and that backup should happen immediately after copying to the hard drive from the camera card, before involving Aperture or any other images management app.
Time Machine is an ongoing regular-routine backup process. Image originals instead need irregularly timed backup, once.
IMO referenced Masters make far more sense than building huge managed-Masters Libraries.
    • Hard disk speed. Drives slow as they fill so making a drive more full (which managed Masters always does) will slow down drive operation.
    • Database size. Larger databases are by definition more prone to "issues" than smaller databases are.
    • Vaults. Larger Library means larger Vaults, and Vaults are an incremental repetitive backup process, so again larger Vaults are by definition more prone to "issues" than smaller Vaults are. One-time backup of Referenced Masters (each file small, unlike a huge managed-Masters DB) is neither incremental nor ongoing; which is by definition a more stable process.
Managed-Masters Libraries can work, but they cannot avoid the basic database physics. I recommend putting the Library on the internal drive and keeping Masters on the external drive by reference.

  • Space Error on Vault Backup

I'm still relatively new to Aperture, and finally got all my digital images into the library and added keywords.
I just tried to back up my library (395GB) and I received an error message stating lack of space on my vault. My back up drive is an internal 750GB drive, with nothing else on it. Before the backup, I had rearranged the images into different folders, renamed some folders, and added some keywords, but didn't add any images to the library since the last back up.
What is going on, and what can I do to back up the library?
    Thanks for the help!!!

I had this exact same problem. It happened after I did a huge import of images into Aperture as I was first moving into using the program. I imported images into about a dozen projects, all named "Untitled xx." After the import, I was able to create a vault just fine. Then, a couple of weeks later when I decided to organize the projects by renaming them and shuffling around the images and deleting a bunch, Aperture said that I had no room on my vault drive to back up. This was absolutely preposterous! I had nearly 4 times the amount of space on the drive as the size of the vault. I had to delete the vault and start again, which, IMO, totally defeats the purpose of the vault.
    My solution was two fold.
First, I've not moved all of my images to referenced files and back them up using third party solutions rather than using Aperture's Vault. Apple need to do some serious work on this feature as it feels like an afterthought stuck into Aperture. it is poorly implemented and it's usefulness questionable since it seems that sometimes there is no guarantee that you can fully restore your library with the vault in case the worst has happened.
Second, I use Chronosync to synchronize the Aperture Libraries. If you read this article you can see how to do so:
    http://www.oreillynet.com/digitalmedia/blog/2006/11/syncingaperture_librarieson.html
What's cool is that you can automate the process just by scheduling Chronosync to trigger wither at a certain time or when you plug in a backup drive. Best thing about this method is that it also syncs deletions as well, which is what the big hang up is with the Vault. BAcking up to the vault, you need to have all this extra space for deleted images and scratch disk space for re-copying files that have been moved around.
I don't know if anyone from Apple is listening to this, but this has been a BIG problem with Aperture since version 1.1 and I wish they'd fix it already.
