Can't Hide Mac Mouse in Parallels Desktop 4.0

I have recently installed parallels desktop 4.0. I am running both Windows XP Pro and Ubuntu 8.10 (not at the same time, but as my other operating systems of choice). I am having problems with the mouse. Whenever I click on the parallels window and start to work inside of the installed operating system, the Macintosh mouse goes to the exact center of the parallels screen and WON'T disappear. How do I hide the Macintosh mouse in parallels? I only want to see one mouse at a time. This is very annoying.
Also, almost equally as annoying, whenever I have parallels open, and when I do want to use Leopard, the Macintosh mouse doesn't work normally. I cannot simply click and drag the mouse over menu bars. Rather, I have to hold the left click button down the whole time in order to get the mouse to behave like it normally does. Does anyone know of a fix for this problem?

Obviously it's not a forbidden topic. However, we are asked to provide support for Apple's products because this website is provided by Apple for Apple product users. You can understand that Apple has no vested interest in our supporting other products. Cannot see html pages LOCALLY STORED on Mac drive, using Parallels Desktop?

Using Parallels Desktop running Windows XP, I cannot use Safari 3 to view HTML files stored on my Mac - no matter how I try!
If I locate the file within Windows Explorer and I right-click and choose "Open With > Safari Web Browser" Safari will open, but it will only open a blank window and nothing loads (the Status Bar remains blank).
If I open Safari and choose "Open File..." and navigate to the file on my Mac and click "Open" I get an error message which states:
Safari can’t open the page “file://.PSF/Macintosh%20HD/..."
etc.
Note that the URL it is trying to open begins with:
“file://.PSF/"
whereas doing the same thing from within Internet Explorer shows the URL to begin with:
"\\.PSF\"
without the "file" part. Also notice the BACKslashes, rather than FORWARDslashes.
Lastly, trying to open a blank Safari window and drag-and-drop the HTML file from Windows Explorer directly into the Safari window results in exactly the same problem.
Note that ALL 3 of the above-mentioned methods DO work in Internet Explorer.
Finally, even copying-and-pasting the local URL that DOES work in IE into Safari's Address Bar doesn't work either. The problem this time is that not only does Safari turn all the backslashes into forwardslashes, but it also adds "http:" to the beginning of the URL, when it was not in the originally-copied link, which began with "\\.PSF\".

Again, thanks for taking the time to reply - but you're really really not paying attention to what I'm saying...
I AM giving Safari the full pathname, but when using Parallels Desktop, this full pathname begins with "\\.PSF\". That's how it starts. Nothing else before the two backslashes, OK. That's how it works in Internet Explorer when using Parallels Desktop. That's how it works in Windows Explorer when using Parallels Desktop.
I have given Safari the full pathname in FOUR different ways, as I mentioned in my original post: right-click, open with / file>open / drag-and-drop / copy-paste-URL.
With regards to my particular issue, I'm not concerned about how it works when using Windows running natively on a "proper" Windows PC. I am concerned about how it works when using Parallels Desktop.
If you really want to know the full URL (not that it matters one jot) of an example file that I can open with Internet Explorer, but not with Safari, here's the URL of the file I was originally trying to test:
\\.PSF\Macintosh%20HD\Work\Downie\Website\HTML\index.html
That's it. Everything is there. I have not left off anything at the beginning of that URL.
That's how it works in Internet Explorer when using Parallels Desktop. OK, re-read that. It works in Internet Explorer when using Parallels Desktop.
When I copy that URL exactly as it is, and paste it into Safari and hit return, Safari automatically converts it to:
http://.psf/Macintosh%20HD/Work/Downie/Website/HTML/index.html
Note how it has altered it in several respects:
- It has added "http:" to the beginning of the URL.
- It has turned the original "PSF" into a lower-case "psf".
- It has turned all the backslashes into forwardslashes.
I try manually deleting and altering the relevant parts and hitting return again, but Safari just goes back to the "wrong URL".
When you say "the only prefix for local files is file://" you are obviously not familiar with how Parallels Desktop works with and reads "local files".
Remember what I said earlier about how you're not REALLY looking at LOCAL files, because TRUE local files would be on the Windows section of the drive, and I am trying to look at files on the Mac part of the drive.
I'll repeat what I said earlier:
If you are not testing this from within Parallels Desktop like I am, and where I am having the problems, then your words here are not of much use, because you cannot experience what I am experiencing. You cannot comment on the experience on how this works from within Parallels Desktop if you do not have Parallels Desktop and have not experienced it yourself.

Magic Mouse and Parallels Desktop

I would like to get the Magic Mouse for my iMac, but I run some Windows apps in XP under Parallels Desktop. Is the mouse going to function at all in this mode? From other threads, it looks as though it might work with reduced functionality, but those discussions pertained to Boot Camp. I want to figure this out before buying the new mouse.

My Magic Mouse does left-click and scroll only in Windows XP Pro (SP3) running on Parallels Desktop 4.03846. I'm on a 2.8 GHz MacBook Pro with OS 10.5.8.
For what it's worth, I do love the mouse and its design, but no right-click prevents me from using it at work (where I primarily use Windows). It really hurts to plug in my USB Microsoft mouse!
If you have any tips to get the three basic functions working (left-click/right-click/scroll), I'm listening...

I have some folders that I placed on my desktop for now trying to organize them however I don't want to see the icons. How do I hide them.

This makes no sense to me. If you hide them how can you organize them. Please explain further what you are trying to accomplish.
You can open the desktop in the Finder and change the view to "list view"

Can I hide the mouse cursor/arrow/pointer

I am running Opera in Kiosk Mode, and I was wondering if the mouse could be set so that when it wasn't moved for a short period of time, the arrow would disappear. If you would go over and touch the mouse, the arrow would show up. Kind of like when you watch a movie on your computer full-screen, the arrow fades away. Thanks.

That is exactly what I do now, I bury it in the lower left hand corner. It can still be seen, and I can live with it, but I want to schedule the machines to turn on and off. When they do that, the default position where the mouse arrow appears is in the upper right hand corner, about 20 pixels in from the side edge, and 20 pixels from the top edge.

Mouse problem and desktop changes

When left clicking my mac mouse (wired) my desktop changes to widgetwindow and vice versa. This problem suddenly started by itself.
Pointing and clicking as should be no longer possible.
My trackpad works fine though.
Anyone can help me out on this?

Your mouse settings may have been inadvertently changed. Take a look at the article "Troubleshooting Mighty Mouse and determining expected behavior" for some tips about the features of the Mighty Mouse. I have attached a picture of what the default setting typically are:

Using Apple Magic Mouse With Windows 7 64 bit and Parallels Desktop 8 questions

I will be getting an iMac in the coming months and installing Parallels Desktop 8 and Windows 7 64 bit.
I was wondering if I would have the functions of been able to left click, right click, scroll (preferably vertically but also occasionally horizontally) with the Apple Magic Mouse when I'm running Windows 7 through Parallels Desktop 8?
I just wondered if anyone has installed Parallels Desktop 8 and Windows 7 and have you been able to do what i mentioned above and also have you come across any other issues, problems whilst using the Apple Magic Mouse on the Windows side?
If there is any problems/issues with doing the above, is there anything I will need to do to get the above functionality to work?

Sometimes scrolling is a bit too fast, becuase Win 7 isn't made to use with the Magicmouse or trackpad.
The only thing i miss / doesn't work ist the middle mouse button!

How to reinstall owned adobe acrobat 7? I have it on Parallels Desktop, but accidentally unstall on Mac :(

At first got some printing problems, I fixed them, but cannot print or find the pdf icon on printer drives. Stupidly, I accidentally uninstall the Adobe Acrobat 7 Professional thinking i can reinstall back just like the printer drives, but then find out the disk I own show 'Windows'. I have Parallels Desktop and this Acrobat 7 is working fine on Windows side, but I seldom open Windows, and I really really need pdf files on my Mac. I have spend days and hours trying to find out how to reinstall or map the application back on Mac. Please anyone can teach me how? I even contacted Adobe Acrobat, not quite friendly. Thanks a lot.

A very interesting NOTE to this thread. In order to try and get the "ignore permissions" box to show up in GET INFO (so I could execute Matt the Magician's solution to file sharing issues)-- I ran the terminal command for disabling ACLs on my internal HD / start up disk (as indicated in the linked thread to BDAqua's forum).
Although I understand that this was useless for disabling permissions on the start up disk (as everyone here pointed out) and allowing me to see the "ignore permissions" check box - somehow it did seem to fix my file sharing problem...and that was the root problem I wanted solved in the first place! After doing the terminal command and a quick reboot, I went in and tested file sharing on the chosen directory and I can create new files or work from existing files in the directory, with both users being able to modify / and save from both machines and each machine sees the revisions and can build from them. Bottom line - I'm stoked and want to thank everyone for their help.
The only other tweak I made was going over to my wife's machine and instead of using her log in / password, I just used my name and password to connect to my main machine that was sharing directories. Maybe that's what fixed the problem or the ACL disable but either way...I'm up and running the way I want to be.
Hope this thread helps anyone else who has these file sharing / permissions issues with Leopard. Especially for anyone wanting to do such a simple file sharing set up between 2 computers. I wish I understood exactly which tweak fixed the problem, but at least it works the way I want now.

Which is the BEST for running Windows XP Pro???? I am hearing conflicting reports about using these programs as to which one to use. I need to run Windows XP about 80% of my day in a network environment but I need to be able to quickly switch back to Leopard. PLEASE HELP!!!

Windows on Intel Macs
There are presently several alternatives for running Windows on Intel Macs.
1. Install the Apple Boot Camp software. Purchase Windows XP w/Service Pak 2 or Vista. Follow instructions in the Boot Camp documentation on installation of Boot Camp, creating Driver CD, and installing Windows. Boot Camp enables you to boot the computer into OS X or Windows.
2. Parallels Desktop for Mac and Windows XP, Vista Business, or Vista Ultimate. Parallels is software virtualization that enables running Windows concurrently with OS X.
3. VM Fusionand Windows XP, Vista Business, or Vista Ultimate. VM Fusion is software virtualization that enables running Windows concurrently with OS X.
4. CrossOver which enables running many Windows applications without having to install Windows. The Windows applications can run concurrently with OS X.
Note that Parallels and VM Fusion can also run other operating systems such as Linux, Unix, OS/2, Solaris, etc. There are performance differences between dual-boot systems and virtualization. The latter tend to be a little slower (not much) and do not provide the video performance of the dual-boot system.
