Can't I install Logic or FCP on external FW 800?

Both programs are huge and I get a RED ! and the external HD was recently formatted for OSX journalized.....Or at least put all the samples and garage band and EX libraries and Drum module samples there.
Is there a way to install LOGIC onto external HD? In the future it will be two LACIES with FIRMTECH esata RAID config.
Thanks

Then installers shouldn't keep insisting that they can only install on to the main drive
Some do, some don't (as you've discovered, LOL!). I agree, for what it's worth.
RE: storing documents and the like on an external drive....
I do!
How large is your system hard drive? What were you able to remove to make room for Logic if you keep all your documents and the like on external drives?
I do know --- but again, very difficult to do if the installer insists on putting everything on your main drive....you then have to figure out what it put where, etc....it's not too bad for a program that wants a Gig or two, but Logic wants 46Gb....surely whoever wrote the installer should have understood this up front and allowed you to pick where you wanted to save samples from the beginning!
It's only difficult for those not interested in (or too lazy to) maintaining a well running system. If that is important to you, then the simple act of finding and moving large groups of files wouldn't be an issue. It IS what all the pros do. Only takes a couple of hours.
Adobe CS3 is a pretty large package (not like Logic) but Adobe lets you install the entire thing wherever you want, on ANY drive ---- so why not Logic?
I'm only speculating, but I know from experience that Logic won't update if not in the place the installer puts it (the Applications folder). Even if it is in another folder in the application folder, it won't work with the updates. I agree that the installer should let you install the content anywhere, but since it doesn't, we have to deal with it. As someone that is obviously interested in music (enough to purchase Logic anyway), you should always be on top of where all your files are. And there will be tens of thousands.
(not the sample instrument though),
Why not? Poor programming of the software? I can understand that kernel extensions MIGHT have to be on the startup drive if all kernel extensions are loaded before other file systems, but Unix-based platforms have the ability to present a unified logical file system, combining all drives together. So what has Apple done that makes the "startup" drive so special?
I have no idea "why not." They just don't. I do know what Apple does to make the "startup" drive so special, but if I told you....you know.
In fact, I need to mention you NEED to have at least 15%
Red herring - in fact swap files can be moved.
No it isn't. I've replaced plenty of drives that were full, but the owner did nothing about it. They lost all their files. I've also trouble-shooted (trouble-shot? LOL!) plenty of issues that are directly related to how full the drive is.
Swap files can only be moved if there is a place to move them to. If there isn't, there's a good chance the OS will over-write some existing files. And that's what they call, "bad."
Hope that clears things up!

  • Can I re install logic after I purchased it  from the app store?

can I re install logic after I purchased it from the app store? They say you can, but it won't allow me. Finally got logic pro 9 loaded. I recorded a test session, saved it,closed logic and when I went to re open logic the next day. My Logic icon was different ( it was the application icon not the silver record icon ) and I am unable to open my session or go to the app store to re install it. I can't find logic pro anywhere in my folders other than the application icon and that won't open.

    anybody answer me fast

  • I can't re-install Logic Pro 9 in the same laptop because serial number is invalid?

I can't re-install Logic Pro 9 in my laptop again because the serial number is invalid? help?

    1) Check you are imnputing the serial number correctly (zeros instead of ones etc..)
    2) If your version of LP9 is the upgrade version then you must first enter the original Logic Po 8 full version serial and then the Logic Pro 9 upgrade serial...
Failing that.... contact Apple for a replacement serial....

Why is it in a disk image?   (I use CarbonCopyCloner, not SuperDuper).
I call it that because I thought that was what SD termed it.  When I open any of the backup files, they mount like a disk image so, to me, that's what it is.  Sorry if my terminology confused things.
    Pondini wrote:
Can you boot your Mac from the drive?  If so, it's just a normal clone, not a disk image.
I believe so.  (However, it's a ML system and all the other computers in the house, except the dead one, still run Snow Leopard.)  In any case, the file is a sparse bundle.
    Pondini wrote:
If so, your solution is easy -- use Setup Assistant when the new Mac first starts up.  Select From Another Disk when asked if you want to Transfer your data.  See Using Setup Assistant on Mountain Lion or Lion for the gory details. It can transfer everything but OSX -- apps, user accounts and data, settings, etc.  It's similar to Migration Assistant, but avoids some possible problems.
That sounds ideal.  However, my Master Plan ran into a snag late yesterday.  I tried to create a backup (using SD) to get the latest stuff into an image, but SD gave an error message when it encountered one of the files (the Parallels app, which happens to be the very app that we're most keen to migrate over intact.  The error message (using AAA and BBB in place of the full paths) read:
Error copying /Volumes/AAA to /Volumes/BBB of type 8 due to error 7: Argument list too long
The file in question is one of the files internal to the Parallels app itself
    (Parallels Desktop.app/Contents/MacOS/launcher)
so I don't know if I have options to work around this and have SD go to completion.  SD aborted when it hit that error.
I have a couple of days to play around with this, to try to get a more recent backup.  Otherwise, I'll have to ponder the alternatives.
Thanks for the good discussion and tips!

I have Elements 13 (I have the hard copy) installed on my iMac using Yosemite. I do all my iPhoto work on an external drive where I have copied my iPhoto Library, can I also install Elements 13 on my external harddrive or drag Elements 13 over from my iMac so that I can do work with Elements 13 via the exteranl hard drive? Thanks tb

Yes you can store images on an external hard dive and have them referenced in Organizer. It’s best to export copies to separate folders/subfolders and that will ensure iPhoto does not get corrupted.
Alternatively you could continue to use iPhoto with the Elements Editor set up in the iPhoto prefs as your external editing app. Then there is no need to use Organizer and no need to duplicate your images.
You can then call up photos directly from iPhoto as normal with the additional option e.g.
Double-click on a thumbnail to edit in iPhoto editor.
Control (right) - click on a thumbnail to edit in the elements app.

  • How can I re-install logic pro 9.1.1 if i don't like using 9.1.4? i get a "your computer doesn't need this update" message

I wonder how to re-install logic pro 9.1.1 if i don't like using 9.1.4 (when i duplicate a track the sound of the whole project disappear, I also have issues with the reverse fonction, there s no sound coming out of the track? when I try to re install the 9.1.1 i get a "your computer doesn't need this update" message

You would probably have to use a time machine backup if you have one.
    This probably isn't a bright idea :
    Can you uninstall Logic.
    Reinstall it.
And when you search for updates, only install 9.1.1 ?

  • Can't re-install Logic 8 on OS 10.8

I recently lost a macbook which was running 10.8 and Logic Pro 8. I replaced it with a MacBook Pro (running 10.8) and restored from Time Machine. Logic opens fine, but a lot of the plugins and other audio content are missing. I can't reinstall the Audio Content or Jam Packs without running the Logic install disk first, and PowerPC is no longer supported.
Any advice on how to install all the audio/jam packs content without having to buy a new copy of Logic?

    Hi
If you have Disk Images of all of the Installer disks, mount all of them, then run the *individual* installer packages via Pacifist NOT the mpkg.

  • Can VirtualBox+BootCamp install Windows 7 on an external drive?

There are a lot of good comments on these ideas, but I can't quite figure out if I can do this or not. I have an 18GB partition on an external drive. I have OS X 10.6.8 (with BootCamp) and a Windows 7 Home Premium disc. If I install VirtualBox (on my mac with Leopard? on the extenal drive?), can I ask BootCamp to install Windows on the extenal drive? I'll gladly tromp through the manuals if I know this will work.
The reason I want to do this is to keep all that Windows goop out of my mac. If this is possible, does the external habitat provide any additional protection against Bad Internet? I'll be working in Windows offline anyway. If Windows is installed on my mac and I'm online–but booted in Leopard–would I face any greater risks than if Windows was absent? Thanks.

You have downloaded, read and checked out VirtualBox? doesn't sound like it.
Running Windows natively and dual booting plus using in a VM only works with the commercial VMs.
Comparison of VMware Fusion Parallels VirtualBox
    Comparison Fusion and Parallels
Yes, a VM only being only a file, can reside anywhere you want, though the speed and performance of the drive does matter.
Users doing things like opening email and clicking on links is goop. Even off line, use Microsoft Security Essentials - and stay patched current and such.
Only in rare setup will Windows work on external drive if the PC not Mac has the motherboard support.

  • Why Can't I install Snow Leopard on an external HD

I am currently running 10.7.1 on my MacBook Pro which I have had for a week or two lees than 12 months.
Firstly, why I want a bootable Snow Leopard HD doesn't matter.
Secondly, the Snow Leopard Install Disc is 10.6.3. The external HD is a Mac OS Extended (Journaled) Partitioned GUID HD.
When I inserted the SL Install Disc I received the following rebuke.
Tried a Leopard Install disc, Same thing.
Tried the Snow Leopard Install disc that came with the computer, Same thing.
Consulted the local Apple expert and she brought her SL bootable HD around and it booted okay.
I was able to get her to install a bootable copy of SL on 2 of my old HDs and they booted from her computer without problems. I don't know what model her computer was. When I connect either of the HDs using FW 800, Startup Manager admits that it exists. When I selected it as my boot disc all that happens is a hanging Apple and no sign of a gear, rotating or otherwise.
I have tried various remedies, connecting with USB instead of FW, sacrificing one of my newer backup discs (I have 4) and cloning onto one of them, and swearing a lot.
Everything I have tried has been a failure.
Any suggestions? I am assuming it must be something to do with my computer because the same discs boot from my friends' computer. Of course that does not explain why her HD boots okay. The fact that the disc that came with the computer won't boot is a worrying conundrum.

I have a Mac that originally came with 10.5, then upgraded to 10.6 with 10.6.3 retail disk then to 10.7 online.
I was able to BOOTCAMP partition, change the BOOTCAMP partition from MSDOS to HFS+ journaled and renamed Snow Leopard.
I was able to hold c and boot off the 10.6.3 installer disk and install 10.6.3 into the Snow Leopard Partition. The computer booted and worked fine in either OS.
I was also even able to erase the whole drive from a Lion boot DVD...
    http://eggfreckles.net/notes/burning-a-lion-boot-disc/
...create 7 partitions and install Lion, Snow, Windows and Linux in four bootable partiitons with a liitle help from rEFIt firmware software.
In all times I was able to boot off the 10.6.3 install disk, even with Lion installed. But Lion's Disk Utility had to format the entire drive to update the partition map first to update it.
The only thing I can think of is your disk is dirty enough or has a flaw small enough that her machine doesn't catch it and yours does. Since she booted fine off the disk and you didn't, despite both having Lion right?
You can clean and polish the bottom of the disk with a very soft cloth and a bit of rubbing alcohol.
You can also create a new bootable OS X 10.6 installer disk following these directions, it might cure the bad spot with error checking that occurs.

  • Can't re-install Leopard(10.5) from external DVD-drive...

I'm trying to wipe my hard drive and re-install OS 10.5.5 from the start up DVD's apple sent me. The internal drive is broken and will not accept discs so I had to buy an external USB DVD drive. When I insert the disc and start the install process the computer restarts and stops doing anything when it gets to the gray Apple screen(there is a spinning dial just under the apple sign). The computer stays there till I turn the computer off.
Why can't I re-install? I've tried holding the option key on start up but all that comes up is the hard drive icon, when I click on it it goes right to the desktop.
Is this caused by the External drive?
Thanks for any help you can give!

Check this link and see if your Mac fits the requirements (most information can be found in Apple Menu>About this Mac)
    http://support.apple.com/kb/SP575
If it's the Macbook you have listed in your signature it will run Snow Leo just fine.
Or just check to see if it has these things:
Mac computer with an Intel processor
    1GB of memory
    5GB of available disk space
    DVD drive for installation

  • Why can't I install Snow Leopard on an external drive?

In order to open applications which have been rendered useless when I installed Lion, I have been trying to install Snow Leopard from the Install DVD on an external drive. For some reason, it either hangs up and stalls during the installation or, when it does finish the process, I am unable to boot from it. It hangs up and the gear rotates forever. Is it not possible to do what I am attempting to do, whih is to get some use out of my now useless applications, or is there some way to accomplish this with which I am unfamiliar?

    I see.
BTW have you considered abandoning Quicken? I was a long time (at least 10 years) Quicken user however it's clear Intuit does not consider the OS X market an important one or not important enough to come out with a true Quicken replacement that will run on the most contemporary version of OS X. Personally I (along with thousands of others) decided the time was right to begin looking at alternatives to Quicken. I chose iBank for it's similarities to Quicken, it's ability to import my Quicken data and it's support. I began using it several months ago now and have been very happy. IMHO it's a better solution than what you're attempting and staying with "dead" software is simply postponing the innevitable which will only become more difficult the longer you postpone it.

  • When installing Logic Pro 8, "skip" is enabled/greyed out on Logic Pro Box

    Hey all
I'm trying to install Logic Pro 8 for the first time on on iMac, however when i get to the custom install options, the "skip" box next to Logic Pro is enabled, and greyed out, and i can't change it, therefore i can't actually install Logic. I can install main stage, compressor etc, but not logic.
Any ideas? I have no trace of previous installations on my system as its never been installed with this set up of snow leopard, but i have double checked everywhere in my prefs, application support etc.
I'm confused and its very frustrating!

Use Pacifist to install it manually.

  • Installing logic 7 on new Intel to install LP9 Upgrade?

I just purchased a new Mac Pro 2.93GHz 8-Core Intel Xeon (Nehalem) after my G5's logic board died.
I bought (a few months back) my LP9 upgrade discs and know that the LP9 upgrade needs to see an older version of Logic on the computer for it to install. Can I even install logic 7 on my new intel mac running snow leopard so that i can then run the LP9 upgrade discs?
    Thanks!
    d.

Hmm, that was not the case for me....
I tried installing the LP9 upgrade on my macbook which does not have any version of Logic on it and even though I connected my XS key I got the following error message:
+"Your Logic XSKey is not eligible for this upgrade. Please refer to the upgrade requirements for details."+
My copy of LP7 is not the "Academic" and it is not the "+Not-For-Resale (NFR)"+ versions. I was told by some reps at apple that the LP9 upgrade discs do in fact need an earlier version of Logic to run the updater.
Tomorrow my new Mac Pro 2.93GHz 8-Core Intel Xeon (Nehalem) arrives and I fear I'll have to first install Logic 7 before I can install the LP9 upgrade..... that is if I can even install Logic 7 on the new machine running snow leopard.
    Thanks!
    d.
Any help would be greatly apprecia

  • Can I install on MainStage 2 on external drive?

    Hello,
I have a 2010 MacBook Air running Lion. I have little room left on the internal drive, but I've been able to run other apps and files from my external drive.
Is there any way I can download and install MainStage 2 to my external drive? There is not enough room on the internal drive to even do the basic 4G download of MainStage 2 and essential content.
    Thanks,
