Can't ichat with aim pc buddy

we can i chat fine but cant get the av to work.. we can see our own faces but not each other... it gets stuck on 'searching for' at my end. im sure this is a basic q, can someone tell me why and what to do? thanks

Hi Steve,
It appears this Poster is at 10.3.2 so AIM 5.9 is the one.
The PC user then need to press F3 and scroll down the list of the Preferences to Live Video and then press the "Tuning Video and Audio" button
This will run a wizard.
Then they need to allow AIM as an exception through the XP firewall.

Using the UPnP option and making sure this is allowed in their router and or modem is a good isdea.

i can't log in to ichat due to the fact that I can't connect with aim. everytime i try to log in it gives an ichat connection alert saying that the connection to the host was unexpectedly lost. the weird thing is that it let me sign on the first time then all of the sudden it just clicked off, giving me that message.
      Mac OS X (10.4.8)

    I'm having the same problem.
I know this is an Apple forum, but is there anywhere that we can get info about AOL's servers (i.e., which regions are having trouble, etc)? I'm in France, and AOL seems to shut down at about 6:00pm every day. This is very frustrating, since the people i'm trying to talk to are in the US.
Edit: the firewall port solution doesn't work, either. It's AOL.

  • IChat can't communicate with AIM account

iChat can't communicate with AIM account - I've looked at ALL threads and no success to troubleshooting
    Looked into this: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3558055?tstart=0
I've tried changing my Port number - FAIL
I tried restarting and deleting account - FAIL
Tried creating a new account - FAIL, says there's an error
Tried going through Go > Finder > Library > Preferences to delete the com.apple.ichat.AIM.plist - FAIL, couldn't find in the folder either
Tried going through keychains and permissions - FAIL
I've had the same account for over 13 years (maybe that's why, ha!) and I did nothing to change any settings. Please help! Work depends on it!

    Hi,
If it is an AIM name (i.e. Registered at AIM) then there seems to be  a rush of Suspended Accounts recently.
Some have found that touring abroad seems to be the latest reason.
You then need to go to the Suspended Account Help Page and use the TOS General Email link.
If you have an @Mac.com name that is of course a Valid AIM Screen Name as well as an Apple ID  means that the password has to be changed at Apple.
However the AIM server cannot tell that this has been done.
One person reported recently that the person they contacted via the TOSGeneral email link did not seem to know about the agreement with Apple that AIM has and that they had to change the "Flagging" on the account at their end.
Although a "Hacking" of an AIM account is not unheard of it is rare.
The TOS General link is still the best route I know of on that score.

  • Can't iChat With My AIM Buddy

Since upgrading to iChat 4.0, I can't chat with my buddy using Tiger who has an AIM screenname.
What's the first thing to try to rectify the problem?

    Ok,
What account type do you have ?
    Is it @mac ?
    Is it paid for ?
Have you checked the Authorization is still current ?
    If not @mac have you tried deleting com.apple.ichat.AIM.plist for Users/(your account)/Library/Preferences ?
This will also lose bubble colours, font choices and Alerts plus Saved Status Messages.
    Restart iChat.
Make sure port 5190 is open to the UDP protocol in your routing Device if using Port Forwarding.

  • Can video chat with Aim users on a PC but not with Ichat users on Mac!

    Hello
I am having the odd problem of being able to video chat with someone when they are using their pc running aim, but I cant chat with the same person when he on his Mac!
I am running as DMZ behind a Linksys WRT54G wireless router.
The problem is on my side because I cant chat with the test accounts either.
I tried this after bothe forwarding and triggering all the ports that were suggested.
    I am stumped!

    Hi Lullah,
This is going to be down to the Staelite connection.
It has what is called latency.
This adds an unexceptable delay in the passing of data at the start of the connection.
Very few people have reported success.
The things you can try are to fool the link into passing more intense data prior to starting a chat.
If you have web pages try uploading a Pic of larger file to the site.
Just as this finishes start up iChat
You should also check that System Preferences > Quicktime > Streaming tab has the speed to match you download set.
Hopefully (But no reported success) you may get iChat to see more bandwidth as you have just had the modem busy.
Following the launch of iChat with a video chat request may be able to get that bandwidth.
Realistically the 128 k upload even if you were getting close to it is very tight to the lowest point Apple say will work.
Speed testing a 128 k service i likely to get a result of about 80% of the figure (102k) iChat will use about 80 % of what is left (you are down to about 83K). You are now below the 100k min.
With regards to your LAN there are several things that may help if not set up already.
Only have one device doing DHCP. The way routers work as compared to modems is that they pass all routing data though to the computers.
This means the computers can be sitting in two subnets (1) from Modem to computer via router and (2) from Router. The computer can only display one of these IP addresses but can get confuse info regarding iChat.
Do not use Port Forwarding or Port triggering, twice or together on the LAN. iCHAT does not like two lots of NAT (bath are forms of Network Address Translation [NAT]).
    Use UPnP where you can.
IF you are trying to test this yur Mac to your PC you ahve to allow for the fact that the modem is handling two Video chats in effect. This means you need twice the minimum bandwidth (let alone the fact that ichat to AIM semms to like 50% more than Mac to Mac contacts.
Sorry to be the bearer of so much doom and gloom.

  • Cannot ichat with AIM triton users

I just got my isight yesturday, but I haven't been able to video chat with anyone with AIM triton! I've tried mercury, aMSN, yahoo messenger.. and I'm pretty frustrated! Is there anything else I can try?

check out iChat forum as opposed to this one. This topic has been addressed many times over there. Short answer (I think): is that iChat, et. al., are not AIM Triton-friendly insofar as A/V is concerned. Your Windoze folks need to run AIM 5.9, I think it is. And then they gotta tweak their settings to play nice with iChat.

  • IChat can't connect with AIM on Vista

I'm trying to conduct a video chat. I'm using iChat 3.1.9 (v446) and my sister is using AIM 5.8 on her brand new Dell laptop running Vista. We both have Linksys Routers which have all the recommended ports opened PLUS we both tried turning our firewalls completely off.
When she invites me, it tries to connect but ends up saying that I "did not respond". When I invite her, it sits in a perpetual state of "waiting for XX to connect". All sessions end with "error 8".
Help! It can't be this hard??

AS it is Vista I presume that is AIM 6.8

  • Can't video with AIM on imessage mavericks

cannot video chat using my aim account on imessage since I "upgraded" to mavericks on my macbook pro  I'm told by a genius in the Apple Store that AIM client is no longer being supported and he is seeing more problems like mine.  What is a solution?
I can see other people, I can type chat.  I can send them an invite, they get it and accept, then nothing.  They never pop up on my system and my video doesn't pop up on their machine.

    Hi,
    This bit makes no sense:-
It is from an AIM to an AIM over iMessage.
    To be very clear.
    Messages is the App.
It can do AIM, Jabber, Yahoo, Bonjour and iMessages accounts (5 types)
Only AIM and Jabber can do Video (And Audio Only chats plus Screen Sharing) from within the app.
Stay with me as it now gets a bit quirky.
Ever since iChat 1 came out various Apple Issued IDs have also been valid AIM Screen Names.
In the early versions of iChat you used to Add the ID in the App Menu > Preferences > Accounts Use + icon at the bottom of the list > new Add Pane in it's own @mac.com section.
Later this become the MobileMe @me.com IDs
Currently it is the early iCloud issued @me.com IDs and the later @icloud.com issued IDs.
So, that is AIM registered Names plus @mac.com, iCloud issued @me.com and @icloud.com  Apple IDs
    An History Aside.
At iChat 3 Jabber was added to iChat
At the time Google started GoogleTalk which is run on a Jabber server.
In iChat 4 this was added as a separate option (you had to manually change the settings in iChat 3 to get it to work as Google uses their Mail IDs, of which there are two types, and called their server something else so the naming convention other Jabber servers have is not stuck to.)
More Recently (around Lion) Facebook turned on their Jabber Server.
Users can enable "Chat" and get a Chat ID linked to their Facebook ID.
iChat 6 added Yahoo as a text Only option.
The Add Account pane has changed format in Messages 8 just to add to the confusion by becoming a slide out item. I am not sure why Apple has listed the AIM choice as AOL (although AIM does mean AOL Instant Messenger)
So, (again) an Apple ID as the iMessages account will invoke FaceTime when you click the Video icon top right of an ongoing text chat (iMessages)
An Apple ID added as an AOL/AIM Screen Name in the slide out in the pic will do AIM to AIM Video within the App (iChat Style)
You and your Buddy may both have Jabber Valid IDs that you can add to Messages that will also do iChat Style Video.
This means from iChat 2 (the first to do Video) through to iChat 5 you get AIM/Apple Issued IDs Screen Names and Jabber IDs including Google talk and Facebook Chat enabled accounts plus the default Bonjour account that can do Video (Audio an Screen Sharing.)
Yahoo gets added in iChat 6 but cannot do Video.
iMessages added in Messages ver 7 (the numbering continues from the iChat versions) does not do Video within the app but invokes FaceTime fro 1-1 video only.
When Messages  does what I am calling iChat Video in this post it sends out a Visible Invite to your Buddy on port 5678 using the UDP Protocol.
This ports needs to be open to accept the reply (Acceptance by the Buddy)
The same port needs to be open if they Send you an Invite.
This is why I said Check the Firewall.
This is more likely to be Off with the Upgrade but settings could also be corrupt.
There is a chance it is your router if you used Port Forwarding and the Computer has changed IP in the Upgrade.
To be very clear your @mac.com ID may need to be added as the iMessages ID AND the AIM ID to be able to use it as the AIM (iChat Style) Video.
This can take so work  to make sure you are connecting to your Buddy (and not a Contact) if using just the Main Messages window and not displaying Buddy lists.
In the "To" spot use the reveal arrow drop down at the right hand end of their name.
This will tell which ID of their's you are connected and which ID of Yours.
In this Pic I am about to AIM Messages another Account I have logged in but I could also change it to iMessage myself at my iPhone number.
I was sure with the first post that you were clear on the differences but with you last post I am not so sure.

  • HT2515 Can you ichat with friends that have a different account e.g. google talk and yahoo

I have an aol account and my friend has a gmail account and we have been trying to chat with eachother. We made sure that we were both online and we were but it said that my friend was offline and unavailable. I thought the problem might be that we have different accounts. Can anyone help?

    Hi,
You both need to using AIM valid name or both using Jabber based IDs like FaceBook or GoogleTalk  (oor Yahoo if you must)
Apple's @mac.com and @me.com are Valid AIM names as well as regular AIM names.
Jabber IDs are gained from non centralised servers and there are thousands of Public and private servers issuing IDs
Google Mail with "Talk" enabled on your Accounts settings or a FaceBook account with "Chat" enabled are valid Jabber IDs
Jabber IDs are rarely emails (Google is an exception).
However they follow the email format which means the AIM Buddy list will "accept" them format wise
(the same is true to some extent the other way round)

  • One way only video on ichat with aim to pc

I can only get one way video. I have a imac and my friend has a pc. He downloaded aim 6.8 and I also got an aim account. When we try to video conference with ichat he can see me fine but I can't see him. He also has a built in camera. The instant messenger also works fine. I would certainly appreciate any suggestions.
    Terry

He should go to the AIM Preferences And the Enhanced IM button and select the camera (At least that was what it was in AIM 6.1 and 6.5)

  • IChat with Aim Pro

So I just bought a new IMac and tried out the Ichat program with my dad, he was using AIM Pro. The video that I was receiving was very blurry and the bitrate was very low 3.0 fps. I believe the FPS is the problem. Is there a setting that I can use to make receiving video better so that its not pixelating. Btw my connection is download 14 kbps and upload is 1024..per speakeasy.net speed test. I am connecting through a wireless router...Lynksys Any help is greatly appreciated.
    Thank you...New mac user

    Hi MArk,
He can try this. It works in AIM 5.9
Open a Chat (Video) - You open the Connection Doctor)
He should find that he has two tabs for the Video.
The Rear one is his Preview and should be click on to bring to the Front.
Next to the video now should be a small squarish icon - click on that
    This brings up a slider.
This should be slid slowly to the left.
You should be able to tell him when the Pic improves in terms of Frame rate and smoothness.
Pick a point that is acceptable.
Actually this reduces the Pci quality (you may not be able to tell by eye) allowing his processor to produce more frames a sec - hence a smoother video.

  • IChat with AIM

Hey can you video conferance mac to mac and mac to pc only using AIM accounts instead of .mac? And do you have to use an iSight camera?

If the PC use's AIM they will see a picture about the size of a postage stamp and they cant expand that, thats why i say use skype to AV with PC's as you can expand the video window.
    for other cams.
    Firewire cam http://www.shop21.uk.com/home.html?target=p_912.html&lang=en-gb
USB cam's http://www.ecamm.com/mac/ichatusbcam/configs.html and you will need this for USB cam's to work with iChat http://www.ecamm.com/mac/ichatusbcam/
Also if you have a digital camcorder with dv-out and it works with iMovie it will work in iChat.

    Also look at this page

It might also be that they need t o reduce the quality of the pic to allow sound.
They should bring their Preview pic to the front.

Move the slider to the left.

  • Can't chat with one Bonjour buddy

We have a number of identical Mac Pros running 10.5.6, with version 4.0.7 of iChat. I am able to chat through everyone through Bonjour except for one user. Whenever I try to initiate a chat or when I receive a chat, iChat freezes up and I have to force quit it. Any ideas?

    Hi ABC_Mac,
I am afraid this is one of those quirky things.
Somewhere there will be something different on one of the computers compared to all the others.
There are the more common LAN issues that I have suggested of Computer Name and User Name.
System Preferences > Quicktime > Streaming at less than 1.5Mbps can be another. (this can look like an intermittent issue, working for some chats and not others)
System Preferences > Sharing > Internet Sharing being On - but I would expect this to effect all chats.
I am not sure what else to suggest to try an pin this down other than going through every setting.
