For future reference, if there is an error message, you should probably quote it in your original message on the subject.
"Could not be read" indicates that you do not have WRITE permission to the destination directory when you try to import, so change your permissions.
"not recognized" might indicate the camera card itself is corrupted or the card reader is failing ... or the problem might go away if you change your permissions.

  • Can't import from Canon GL2

Just bought a Mac in September. Used to Windows and I'm clueless. How do you get video to import to Imovie 09 from a Canon GL2? Do you have to use a firewire port or can you use the USB ports? The computer doesn't recognize my camera at all. Any and all help greatly appreciated.

The Best Buy guy is clueless.
You need no drivers from CAnon.
If it is a new Mac, it is FW800.
You can click on the apple logo at top left.
    Then click About This Mac.
    Then click Additional Information.
You should see a list of hardware.
Go down to the fire wire section.
You can tell from the speed.

  • Can't import from Canon Vixia HF G20

I have two identical Canon Vixia HF G20's, both with video data on the internal drive.  One mounted as a camera in the import window and the data imported like a charm.
The other camera is mounting as a drive, so I can't import the MTS files.  I called Canon support and the basically walked me through how to connect the camera to computer and then said to call Apple. How can this be? Is there something I'm missing here?
I called Canon support and they basically walked me through how to connect the camera to computer and then said to call Apple.

As you can see, the camera is showing up as a drive in the devices field.  Any ideas why it would do that instead of showing up in cameras?

Here are some questions for you about your situation:

Do you have a USB card reader you could try in an attempt to isolate the camera as the cause of the problem?

Have you tried this on another user account on your computer?
What brand SD card do you have in the camera? (knock off brand memory can sometimes be problematic)

  • Can't import from Canon Optura 10 into iMovie

I just bought a MacBook Pro 15 inch specifically for making/editing movies. I connected a 9pin-4pin DV Firewire Cable to my Canon Optura 10 (set in Play/VCR mode). The other end of the cable was connected to the Firewire port on the MacBook Pro. I opened up iMovie. Nothing pops out. I tried importing but only the MacBook Pro's built-in camera pops out.
The DV Firewire Cable I'm using is one year old. I never used it until now. Since I bought it (1 year ago), it's been stored safely in its package. It has a lifetime warranty.
Can someone please suggest or help me? Thanks. I am very disappointed right now because I bought this MacBook Pro for only one reason --- to edit my movies --- and that doesn't seem to work so far.

    Hi
May be You find help in my list.
    *NO CAMERA or A/D-box*
    Cable
    • Sure that You use the FireWire - USB will not work for miniDV tape Cameras
FireWire - Sure not using the accompany USB-Cable but bought a 4-pin to 6-pin FW one ?
    • Test another FW-Cable very often the problem maker.
    Camera
    • Test Your Camera on another Mac so that DV-in still works OK
    • Toogle in iMovie pref. Play-back via Camera (on<->off some times)
    • Some Cameras has a Menu where You must select DV-out to get it to work
    • Camera connected to "charger" (mains adaptor) - not just on battery
Does Your Camera work on another Mac ?
Sorry to say it is to easy to turn the 6-pin end of the FW-cable 180 deg wrong.
This is lethal to the A/D-chip in the Camera = needs an expensive repair.
(Hard to find out - else than import/export to another Mac ceased to work
everything else is OK eg recording and playback to TV)

    • Daisy Chaining most often doesn’t work (some unique cases - it’s the only way that work (some Canon Cameras ?))
Try to avoid connecting Camera <--> external HD <--> Mac but import directly to the Mac then move
the Movie project to dedicated external hard disk.
    Mac
    • Free space on internal (start-up) hard disk ? Please specify the amount of free space.
    (Other hard disks don't count)
I go for a minmum of 25Gb free space for 4x3 SD Video - and my guess is 5 times more for 16x9 HD ones
after material is imported and edited.
    SoftWare
    • Delete iMovie pref file may help sometimes. I rather start a new account, log into this and have a re-try.
    • Any strange Plug-ins into QuickTime as Perian etc ? Remove and try again.
    • FileVault is off ? (hopefully)
    Using WHAT versions ? .
    • Mac OS - X.5.4 ?
    • QuickTime version ? (This is the heart in both iMovie and FinalCut)
    • iMovie 8 (7.1.?) ?
    • iMovie HD 6 (6.0.4/3) ?
*Other ways to import Your miniDV tape*
    • Use another Camera. There where tape play-back stations from SONY
but they costed about 2-4 times a normal miniDV Camera.
    • If Your Camera works on another Mac. Make an iMovie movie project here and move it
over to Your Mac via an external hard disk.
(HAS TO BE Mac OS Extended formatted - USB/DOS/FAT32/Mac OS Exchange WILL NOT DO)

Hi Bengt W, I tried it all, but nothing worked. Your answer has been helpfull insofar as all the different trials led to the conclusion that there was something wrong with my iMovie software. I therefore threw everything away and reinstalled iMovie from the HD. After that the exportation of DV videos (there has not been any problem with HDV videos) to my Sony camcorders worked properly as it did before. Thank you. LKN 1935

Thanks for all your suggestions. What I learned is that I had a software problem. I had something called "Nikon Transfer" on my Mac that was recognizing my Canon camcorder as a still camera and was preventing iMovie from working properly. After uninstalling Nikon Transfer and doing a reboot, everything worked great.
I never liked the Nikon Transfer software anyway--I guess I'll get a cheap card reader and use that to transfer photos in the future.

  • Can't import from Canon Rebel into Yosemite iPhoto.

Updated to Yosemite 10.10, iPhoto 9.6,  which recognizes my Canon Rebel T5i and shows a video but won't import because "there's a problem downloading" which tells me nothing. Any ideas?

I had posted this issue in multiple spots so I'll answer in general and paste everywhere for others to learn what's taken me hours to figure out. I've spent nearly a work day dealing with his issue, needed the video for a work project. Anyway, short answer to a known problem, call Canon (or your camera manufacturer).
Turned out my video wasn't corrupt. I had to take the card out of the camera and insert into Mac's SD slot (which is a card reader so you could go the USB card reader route) and imported directly into iMovie. Downloading into iPhoto, Image Capture and even dragging onto my Desktop still wouldn't work for some unknown reason (probably related to my old laptop) but I was able to finally import the video as a .mov file directly from the card.
For newer Canon cameras, there is no communication setting of Normal and PTP in the menu settings as both the Canon rep and another commenter reported. The Canon rep said they are updating their utility to Yosemite OS 10.10, that it wouldn't take 6 months but he couldn't commit a timeframe. You don't need the camera software anyway if you're tethering and importing into iPhoto.
Seems the easiest solution is inserting card into computer SD slot or using a USB tethered card reader. Hope this helps save others some aggravation although I've learned my lesson about early adoption and "upgrading" to new Apple OS. If it ain't broke.....wait, then wait some more.

  • Importing from Canon HF10

The good news is I can connect my HF10 to iMovie without a problem, but if I try to save in the Full 1080 format it warns me that this will degrade the footage. Any reason for that? Should I ignore the warning and carry on regardless or drop to import option to the large (960x540 ) setting?
    Thanks

Try doing a forum search. There can be a lot of different causes for the exclamation mark, wrong settings, mixed media on the chip, audio not set to plain stereo, having Perian installed.
The second question needs more information. Please provide the exact item properties of the clips that are being imported via XML and the item properties of the sequence in which you're editing.

  • When importing from Canon XL2, audio is delayed by 5 seconds

When I import from Canon XL2, the audio track is there, but it is off by a few seconds. At first it was only about 1 or 2 seconds, but when I re-imported it got worse. It's fine when I import through iMovie, but I lose my multiple audio tracks.
I know I can re align on the timeline, but that's not the point!

You may have nearly filled up your hard disc.
1 hour of DV is about 13GB. Trying to capture a 2nd hour would take you up to about 26GB of space used up on your hard disc.
It's better to capture to an internal disc, or to a FireWire-connected external disc, as USB - even USB 2.0 - can't necessarily keep up with the constantly sustained data throughput speeds which DV needs.
A Mac needs about 10% of your total hard disc space to be empty, to allow for its internal 'housekeeping', log files, virtual memory files, etc. So if you have an 80GB internal disc, with, say, 13GB of operating system & programs, plus, say, 20GB of pictures, plus, say, 13GB of documents, and you add 13GB (1 hour's worth) of video, that's 59GB, and you'll need about 8GB of free space, that's 67GB accounted for, leaving about 13GB empty for your 2nd hour.
But that spare 13GB of spare space may be scattered around the disc, and not all in one sequential region, which may be why you're getting stuttering.
Not only that, but there may be 'dropouts' on the tape (brief signal disappearance) which may not show on the camcorder (..because many camcorders substitute a previous frame of video for any damaged frame..) but may only show up when you try importing. This may happen if, for instance, you recorded at a slower than normal speed, e.g; LP speed instead of Standard Play speed.
So check, first, how much empty space you have on your internal disc, and see if your external disc can be attached by FireWire, instead of the - what's becoming almost ubiquitous - USB connection.

  • Importing From Canon Vixia HF M30 to Final Cut Pro

Hey there, I have been trying to import to final cut with some success. Importing From Canon Vixia HF M30 from my sd card.
    I used the easy setup.
    FORMAT HD
USE HDV APPLE INTERMEDIATE CODEC 1080I60
I go to log and transfer select the clips I need and click add to que.
So perfect there are my clips in my bin, I bring them to my timeline and a green line appears above my video, uugggggh. I know this is a rendering issue but why.
Please help does anyone know why this is happening.
This is very frustrating, I have been trying to read the other discussions I didn't see anything on it let alone the info on the net, trying different things just not working for me.
    Thanks Gang

Your camera records AVCHD. Convert to prores 422 or prores 422(LT) on log and transfer and make sure your sequence matchs your footage.

  • Can't import from Cannon HV20.

I can't import from my Cannon HV20. The camera does not show up as an external camera. I just get the message "to import video, please connect a camera". I get the same message when connecting to my laptop and I have tried two different firewire cables. I have gone through the settings on the camera and I don't see anything that would prevent it. I have the camera in play mode and powered on. I have successfully imported from this camera many times. This started yesterday when I plugged the camera in while using ichat and ichat crashed. I suspect the firewire connection on the camera is damaged.
    Any ideas?

I have the same problem with a different camera.
I have used my Sony TRV27 Handycam in making movies primarily with iMovie 6.0.3 on my former G5. It did record from the camera to iMovie 7.1.4 on my Intel core 2 but now can't get in to import to either program 6.0.3 or 7.1.4. It will not recognize that the camera is attached or switch the camera icon to camera mode. If it does it only shows Built in iSight or Time Lapses.
I prefer to use the older iMovie camera because of the options and familiarity of it. I do not care for the newer iMovie program format.
I went to the system profiler as suggested and found firewire but have no idea what the Firewire Device Tree looks like nor did I see anything on the right except Firewire Bus speed.
I have been using the cord from Sony in the past to import movies. My computer does not show the camera even though in Finder/Preferences connected services are checked to show up on the desk top.
I phoned Apple Care today and got virtually no help. The gentleman kept saying it was the camera that was at fault. Or it was the ? slot in the computer that wasn't working. They both work. I checked. I see by posts a lot of other camera owners are having similar problems.

  • Can't import from Sony XDCAM memory card to FCP 6

I can't import from Sony XDCAM memory card to FCP 6.01 HD. Am using Macbook Pro, 2 gig of RAM. This is my first time NOT using tape. I can copy the files off the memory card onto an external drive (to free up the card for pro crew's next day's shoot), but can't import either to FCP. Do I need to convert the files in some way before FCP can read them? Need to fix this problem fast as the crew are off to Nepal for 2 week shoot.

    Laura,
First, I'm assuming that you're referring to the XDCAM EX. You'll need to install the FCP 6.0.2 upgrade, which contains the XDCAM EX codecs.
Second, You'll need to install the PDZK-P1 Transfer Application, and use that to import your EX clips into FCP. I just noticed that there is a new version available, 2.5.1 which is labeled specifically for Tiger/Leopard. I haven't tested this version yet, and will report back on any stability issues. We're currently running version 2.1.1, without many issues.

  • Can't import from LR 3 to PSE 10

Installed Photoshop Elements 10 and can't import from LR 3 for external editing. Any suggestions? I've already tried deleting the LR and PSE .plist files.

So basically I uninstalled Photoshop Elements 10 trial version. I uninstalled LR4 upgrade version. After reading about all the on line grief that people have been having with LR4, why go there? Sounds like more hype with a wopping side order of hooey. Did the online text conversation with Adobe support person prior to logging on to this forum and his only suggestion was call tech support Monday. Uninstalled and reinstalled LR 3.6. Uninstalled and reinstalled PS CS3. Everything works perfectly like it did before. Why or why did I waste  all my time with supposedly compatible upgrades? First time I've really been disappointed with Adobe. Hope it's the last.
