Can't import from Canon Vixia HF G20

I have two identical Canon Vixia HF G20's, both with video data on the internal drive.  One mounted as a camera in the import window and the data imported like a charm.
The other camera is mounting as a drive, so I can't import the MTS files.  I called Canon support and the basically walked me through how to connect the camera to computer and then said to call Apple. How can this be? Is there something I'm missing here?
I called Canon support and they basically walked me through how to connect the camera to computer and then said to call Apple.

As you can see, the camera is showing up as a drive in the devices field.  Any ideas why it would do that instead of showing up in cameras?

  • Importing From Canon Vixia HF M30 to Final Cut Pro

Hey there, I have been trying to import to final cut with some success. Importing From Canon Vixia HF M30 from my sd card.
    I used the easy setup.
    FORMAT HD
USE HDV APPLE INTERMEDIATE CODEC 1080I60
I go to log and transfer select the clips I need and click add to que.
So perfect there are my clips in my bin, I bring them to my timeline and a green line appears above my video, uugggggh. I know this is a rendering issue but why.
Please help does anyone know why this is happening.
This is very frustrating, I have been trying to read the other discussions I didn't see anything on it let alone the info on the net, trying different things just not working for me.
    Thanks Gang

Your camera records AVCHD. Convert to prores 422 or prores 422(LT) on log and transfer and make sure your sequence matchs your footage.

For future reference, if there is an error message, you should probably quote it in your original message on the subject.
"Could not be read" indicates that you do not have WRITE permission to the destination directory when you try to import, so change your permissions.
"not recognized" might indicate the camera card itself is corrupted or the card reader is failing ... or the problem might go away if you change your permissions.

  • Time Shift During Import from Canon  Vixia HF S21

I imported video from my Canon Vixia HF S21. All time stamps indicated in iMovie '09 are 7 hours early. That is, video shot at 10:57 AM (in the real world) is shown by iMovie '09 (following import) as having been shot at 3:57 AM.
    Here's the "weird" part:
    1) Time and date settings on the camera are accurate.
    2) Time zone (Pacific) and daylight savings (Daylight, not Standard) settings on camera are also accurate.
    3) Time and date settings on my Mac Pro are accurate.
    4) Time zone (Pacific) and daylight savings (Daylight, not Standard) settings on my Mac Pro are also accurate.
Bug right? I figured out a workaround (Choose "Adjust Clip Date and Time..." from the File menu in iMovie), but it's a pain to do this on a large number of clips.
Is there a better solution/a real fix to this?

  • Importing from Canon Vixia HF R10

'When importing with iMovie from my Canon Vixia, there's two options "large" and "full original size"... if I select "large", and transfer off 16gb from the camera I get 16gb on my mac, if i select "full original size", and transfer off 16gb i get way more than 16gm on my mac... what's happening to cause this... someday i want to upload(youtube) the videos i'm recording in full 1080 HD.... am I still getting HD with the "large" selection? need some explanation help. thanks in advance!

When you choose to import HD footage as "Large", iMovie imports and converts the AVCHD files on your camera to an optimized .MOV file that gives you a good balance between visual quality and reasonable file size.
When you choose to import HD footage as "Full", iMovie imports and decompresses the AVCHD file to its "true" full file size.
    "Large" is not 1080p.
If you want 1080p, stick with the "Full".
Keep in mind that Full size HD footage is HUGE (which is why most people that work with HD video on a regular basis have more than one hard drive for storage). All that visual quality (data) requires space.
I find the Large size to be more than adequate for viewing purposes. You can do a trial run to see how it works out with your camera. Import some footage, make a quick movie, then toss it up on the biggest screen you can find. See how it looks. You can have a Full size clip to compare it to. You may find that the difference in visual quality is not worth the time / space cost.
    Hope that helps.

  • Can't import from Canon GL2

Just bought a Mac in September. Used to Windows and I'm clueless. How do you get video to import to Imovie 09 from a Canon GL2? Do you have to use a firewire port or can you use the USB ports? The computer doesn't recognize my camera at all. Any and all help greatly appreciated.

The Best Buy guy is clueless.
You need no drivers from CAnon.
If it is a new Mac, it is FW800.
You can click on the apple logo at top left.
    Then click About This Mac.
    Then click Additional Information.
You should see a list of hardware.
Go down to the fire wire section.
You can tell from the speed.

Here are some questions for you about your situation:
Do you get an icon on the desktop when you plug the camera in?
Do you have a USB card reader you could try in an attempt to isolate the camera as the cause of the problem?
Have you tried this on another computer?
Have you tried this on another user account on your computer?
What brand SD card do you have in the camera? (knock off brand memory can sometimes be problematic)

  • Can't import from Canon Optura 10 into iMovie

I just bought a MacBook Pro 15 inch specifically for making/editing movies. I connected a 9pin-4pin DV Firewire Cable to my Canon Optura 10 (set in Play/VCR mode). The other end of the cable was connected to the Firewire port on the MacBook Pro. I opened up iMovie. Nothing pops out. I tried importing but only the MacBook Pro's built-in camera pops out.
The DV Firewire Cable I'm using is one year old. I never used it until now. Since I bought it (1 year ago), it's been stored safely in its package. It has a lifetime warranty.
Can someone please suggest or help me? Thanks. I am very disappointed right now because I bought this MacBook Pro for only one reason --- to edit my movies --- and that doesn't seem to work so far.

    Hi
May be You find help in my list.
    *NO CAMERA or A/D-box*
    Cable
    • Sure that You use the FireWire - USB will not work for miniDV tape Cameras
FireWire - Sure not using the accompany USB-Cable but bought a 4-pin to 6-pin FW one ?
    • Test another FW-Cable very often the problem maker.
    Camera
    • Test Your Camera on another Mac so that DV-in still works OK
    • Toogle in iMovie pref. Play-back via Camera (on<->off some times)
    • Some Cameras has a Menu where You must select DV-out to get it to work
    • Camera connected to "charger" (mains adaptor) - not just on battery
Does Your Camera work on another Mac ?
Sorry to say it is to easy to turn the 6-pin end of the FW-cable 180 deg wrong.
This is lethal to the A/D-chip in the Camera = needs an expensive repair.
(Hard to find out - else than import/export to another Mac ceased to work
everything else is OK eg recording and playback to TV)
    Connections
    • Daisy Chaining most often doesn’t work (some unique cases - it’s the only way that work (some Canon Cameras ?))
Try to avoid connecting Camera <--> external HD <--> Mac but import directly to the Mac then move
the Movie project to dedicated external hard disk.
    Mac
    • Free space on internal (start-up) hard disk ? Please specify the amount of free space.
    (Other hard disks don't count)
I go for a minmum of 25Gb free space for 4x3 SD Video - and my guess is 5 times more for 16x9 HD ones
after material is imported and edited.
    SoftWare
    • Delete iMovie pref file may help sometimes. I rather start a new account, log into this and have a re-try.
    • Any strange Plug-ins into QuickTime as Perian etc ? Remove and try again.
    • FileVault is off ? (hopefully)
    Using WHAT versions ? .
    • Mac OS - X.5.4 ?
    • QuickTime version ? (This is the heart in both iMovie and FinalCut)
    • iMovie 8 (7.1.?) ?
    • iMovie HD 6 (6.0.4/3) ?
*Other ways to import Your miniDV tape*
    • Use another Camera. There where tape play-back stations from SONY
but they costed about 2-4 times a normal miniDV Camera.
    • If Your Camera works on another Mac. Make an iMovie movie project here and move it
over to Your Mac via an external hard disk.

Hi Bengt W, I tried it all, but nothing worked. Your answer has been helpfull insofar as all the different trials led to the conclusion that there was something wrong with my iMovie software. I therefore threw everything away and reinstalled iMovie from the HD. After that the exportation of DV videos (there has not been any problem with HDV videos) to my Sony camcorders worked properly as it did before. Thank you. LKN 1935

Thanks for all your suggestions. What I learned is that I had a software problem. I had something called "Nikon Transfer" on my Mac that was recognizing my Canon camcorder as a still camera and was preventing iMovie from working properly. After uninstalling Nikon Transfer and doing a reboot, everything worked great.
I never liked the Nikon Transfer software anyway--I guess I'll get a cheap card reader and use that to transfer photos in the future.

The problem was the external backup hard drive that is connected, you need to disconect the external drive before the mac can see the video camera.

  • Can't import from Canon Rebel into Yosemite iPhoto.

Updated to Yosemite 10.10, iPhoto 9.6,  which recognizes my Canon Rebel T5i and shows a video but won't import because "there's a problem downloading" which tells me nothing. Any ideas?

I had posted this issue in multiple spots so I'll answer in general and paste everywhere for others to learn what's taken me hours to figure out. I've spent nearly a work day dealing with his issue, needed the video for a work project. Anyway, short answer to a known problem, call Canon (or your camera manufacturer).
Turned out my video wasn't corrupt. I had to take the card out of the camera and insert into Mac's SD slot (which is a card reader so you could go the USB card reader route) and imported directly into iMovie. Downloading into iPhoto, Image Capture and even dragging onto my Desktop still wouldn't work for some unknown reason (probably related to my old laptop) but I was able to finally import the video as a .mov file directly from the card.
For newer Canon cameras, there is no communication setting of Normal and PTP in the menu settings as both the Canon rep and another commenter reported. The Canon rep said they are updating their utility to Yosemite OS 10.10, that it wouldn't take 6 months but he couldn't commit a timeframe. You don't need the camera software anyway if you're tethering and importing into iPhoto.
Seems the easiest solution is inserting card into computer SD slot or using a USB tethered card reader. Hope this helps save others some aggravation although I've learned my lesson about early adoption and "upgrading" to new Apple OS. If it ain't broke.....wait, then wait some more.

  • Importing from Canon Vixia HFS100

I can't seem to use iMovie'11 to import this file from the memory card.  The camera uses a .mts file format which supposedly is not compatible with iMovie.  However, I can import the video to iPhoto and play it but not edit it.  Also, it seems that it will import to iMovie archives, where locating and clicking the .mts file opens it it iMovie where it can be edited.  However, iMovies is VERY and unacceptibly slow (perhaps because this is an HD file and my computer does not have the power for it).  Any ideas?

FCE will default to NTSC DV and if your 1920 footage is edited into that the loss will be apparent.
To make sure your Sequence (governed by the Easy Setup) is the one your want, right click the Sequence icon in the Browser and select Item Properties.
This will confirm the settings to ensure the footage and Sequence both match.

  • Which project settings should I use importing from Canon vixia HF-G10?

    Help

You can not change a project's specs in mid-project. You can only set them when you first start a project.
You should not mix formats in the same project. Different formats and frame rates can behave very differently when processed and output by the program.
You can certainly use a JPG in your project. Thought we recommend that no still image be larger than 1000x750 pixels in size for best performance.
Most of these answers and many more are available in my books, by the way, if you're looking to fully understand the program.

  • What is a good video converter for iMac?  Premiere 6 will not capture from the Canon VIXIA HF G20.

What is a good video converter for iMac?  Premiere 6 will not capture from the Canon VIXIA HF G20.

Rather than convert, you'd be better off capturing with a more current version of the program -- one that supports AVCHD video. Otherwise, you're in for a lot of headache. A converter isn't going to solve your problems.
BTW, when you say Premiere 6, do you mean Premiere 6 -- which is over 10 years old? (There was no Premiere Elements 6.)
Trust me on this: Capture with a Mac version of Premiere Elements 11 or 12 and your video will be perfectly compatible with any Mac program.

  • IMovie 11 & Canon VIXIA HF G20 HD

    Hi Gang
My freind is using a Canon VIXIA HF G20 HD to import clips into iMovie 11. Camera is recognized, seems to work fine, but would like to export HD to use in FC6. It was assumed iMovie 11 is not the best way to prepare/export the MT files for FC?
Someone recommded ClapWrap for 10.6, thru his Mac Mini, (we tried it), but the camera isn't being recognized.
If he stays with iMovie as a 'capture intermediary', what are the best export settings to be imported into FC6, then later for HD Disc?
    Thanx
    Mike

    Hi Meg
As per Shane, I actually just tried to get 'Clipwrap' for my own G5, and couldn't find a version for 10.4.
If I'm understanding this correctly, you'd have to have something to start with - some type of file that was pulled off the camera - correct?
The problem is, only iMovie 11 will aceept clips from that camera, and export Via its own version, (whatever that is?)
Are you saying that Clipwrap has a built-in capture software to connect to the camera?
    Thanx
    Mike
