Can't import into After Effects 7 with Motion 3

This worked like a charm before upgrading to Motion 3, but since then import doesn't seem to work. Either, in After Effects it says the file can't find associated graphics or the import just doesn't work at all. Anybody else had this ?

I got it working in Motion 2 (and used it all the time) using this tutorial

  • What is the best video format for importing into After Effects CS5

Please look at this video, work in progress.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=49_wbdKALQk
The opening, featuring a ribbon of videos, was created in After Effects, using Digieffects Freeform.
The  issue is the poor quality of the videos that are featured in the  opening -- compared to the higher quality of videos from the original Premiere  project., which you can see at the end of the clip.
To create the After Effects project, I exported a series of video clips from Premiere  to mp4.
Then I imported them into AfterEffects.
The bottom line, and the purpose of this question, is I am thinking that  MP4 was not the best choice for the Adobe Premiere export.
What  is the best format to export video from in Premiere Pro CS5 to import  into after effects, or to import into any other editing program,  incuding importing right back into Adobe Premiere, if that is eever  needed.
    AVI?
    MOV
    MP4
And any other settings that will result with the highest qualiity videos for importing.
    Thanks

To follow on with Wade's suggestion...
There are lots of ways to get movies and projects and other things back and forth between After Effects and Premiere Pro. This page outlines them:
"Working with Premiere Pro and After Effects"
If you must render and export a movie out of one application to bring it into another, there is a very basic piece of video workflow advice that you need to keep in mind (which applies to _all_ video software, not just After Effects and Premiere Pro):
If you're creating a movie to be used in the next step of a post-production pipeline, you _never_ want to use a format that does lossy compression. You either use no compression or (preferable) lossless compression. Examples of codecs that provide lossless compression are the Animation codec and PNG codec at the highest quality settings; these can be used in a QuickTime container, for example. Never compress a movie with lossy compression except at the very end of your pipeline, when you're creating the final movie for distribution.
MP4 (MPEG-4) is a lossy codec. The quality loss is acceptable for the last stage in the pipeline, but it's not acceptable for an intermediate file.
It seems that you would benefit from reading this and and working your way through this.

Okay, here's where I stand at this point regarding exporting and/or dynamic linking between AfterEffects and Premiere.
I'm in After Effects.  I create a composition I like.  So I first tried the old fashioned way. I exported it into a MOV file with the animation preset. Millions of colors.  Same frame rate as my Premiere project, which also uses MOV files with no problem.
Howver when I import the MOV file created by After effects, the NEW MOV file section of the premier project plays sluggish.  And it also causes the videos that follow to play sluggish.   And they are all MOV files at the same frame rate.
The same thing happens when I do a dynamic link between the two projects.  A sluggish response starting with the After Effects dynamic link and affecting the MOV video files that follow.
It's a very short After Effects composition.  About 3 second slong.
I have a very powerful computer built especially for CS5 and premiere --so that should not be an issue -- recently was in the top ten of the benchmark list.
Up to this point my video files have played perfectly layer upon layer with no problems.
Is there something I am not considering?
    Thanks.

  • How can I add 3ds Model into After Effects with animation and camera rotation?

    Hi all!
I'm on my way to my final project of Multimedia Animation of my bachelor last year.
I have good knowledge of After Effects & 3ds Max.
I want to do a short movie with aliens being shot down.
So, my question is: How can I import my 3ds model with the animation(keyframes) into After Effects AND rotate the whole character and it's animation as I move the camera?
for example, having a alien being shot down at the same time I'm recording with the HD camera around, that means that I have to define planes and angles, the problem is that I'm not parenting the character correctly with the plane.

Element doesn't do pre-anaimted objects, so that would be the limiting factor. Of course it could still be handy for otehr scene elements. On that note, using AtomKraft and exporting the model as an Alembic file with animation might also be something to look into...

  • Photoshop video won't import into after effects

    Hello,
I've been trying to import a .psd file that has video into After Effects CC and I'm getting an error message:
After Effects error: Problem with Photoshop document "xxxx". Quicktime is not installed or is too old of a version.
This doesn't make sense as I'm up to date with all my software. I've been watching tutorials showing that it is possible although apparently not for me!
I'm on a Late 2012 iMac and running OS X 10.9.3. I'm also running CC for both applications. I have Quicktime Player 10.3 and Quicktime Player 7.
Thank you for taking the time reading this! I really hope someone can help me.

Mostly it's because I'm way more familiar with PS as a painting tool and some efx I can't create in AE (or it'll take me forever to figure it out). I was hoping to basically get down what's in my head with PS then bring it into AE but have the option of going back into PS if need be.
I should explain that my "day job" is painting background colour keys for animation and a traditional painter and though I'm not an animator, I hope to incorporate the skills I have with After Effects. It just seemed a more straight forward way I guess.
    Thanks for asking Trevor!

  • Can I use adobe after effects with my project from premiere elements

Wondering if I can use adobe after effects with my premiere elements project

    drunner
What version of Adobe After Effects do you have?
Whatever the case, I have not found any Adobe After Effects documentation that include a Premiere Elements project.prel file as a supported import choice.
I suspect that you are going to have to export your Premiere Elements Timeline as a .mp4 file with a After Effects supported compression into After Effects.
But, I would ask in the Adobe After Effects Forum just to double check.

  • JPEG import into After Effects 6.5/7 over Xsan

We are unable to import any type of .jpg file into After Effects over the Xsan file system. When attempting to do so we only receive a slew of bogus error messages and the files will not import, tiff files or other formats are fine. This issue plagued us back in Panther and we scratched the Xsan file system and went to plain apple share to get around this.
We went back to Xsan with Tiger because we were told the issue had been resolved, it hasn't been fixed, and now we're back to square one.
Being an effects department, all of our photo librarties are jpeg so we have to convert everything to tiff to get it to import into AE. Apple told us to contact Adobe and Adobe tells us to contact Apple. Has anyone else experinced this joy?
P.S. Has anyone had trouble importing .tga files into Photoshop CS2 over Xsan, we are also having this issue?
    Xserve G5 Mac OS X (10.4.7) Xsan 1.4

    Xserve G5   Mac OS X (10.4.7)   Xsan 1.4

I brought in an Xsan expert to set this system up and I do not know what block size he set, I will check with him. We are running Xsan 1.4 w/10.4.7 on all of the clients and servers and we still have this issue.
I am hoping the block size is the default but if it isn't at least that would be a good explanation. It took five days the last time to do this and I am not ready to do it all over again, especially when it cost so much to bring someone out to do it and they said that the issue has been resolved since previous versions of Xsan.

  • Bringing Premiere ultra keyed footage into after effects with key intact

It there a way to bring in footage I keyed using Premiere ultra into After effects? I much prefer the ultra keyer over anything native to After Effects CS5.5. If not, how do I export and keep intact the aplha channels from the keyed footage into after effects? Thirdly, if I have to, how do I remiove the black background I get as a result of a default quick time movie file?

You can not export a clip with alpha from PPRO.
Easiest way is just doing the key in Keylight - AEFX ( which is far more powerful and flexible than Ultra Key . As good as it is, it has its limits)

  • Footage looks corrupt when imported into After Effects

    Hi folks,
My usual workflow involves starting an edit in FCP and exporting sections that I want to add something to in AE, rendering them out and importing back in to FCP.
I have recently got a Sony EX3 and have run into a problem after the first shoot:
When bringing a clip in to AE from FCP, I start a new comp and it looks fine - but scrub forward a little and the clip is mostly green. It's like artifacts that take up the vast majority of the comp. Often there are a few squares which are not green (I've attached an image of this). After that it's basically fully green, with some of the image barely visible, like some sort of find edges effect.
Footage SEEMS to be fine if I drag in the .mov files (before FCP), but I am exporting Quicktimes from FCP using the same settings and codec..
Can anyone help me out? I can provide more info if I'm not being clear..
    Thanks
    Mike Chalmers

Yeah, and you are using FCP 12 and AE CS 8000... See my point? Without telling us exactly what versions of the programs, what CoDecs and Export settings you are actually using, your post is not making too much sense. There could be any number of things at work here, some of which are known like issues with ProRes or Quicktime in general, but if that's not it, without more info we won't be able to unriddle this.

  • Problem with sound when import from Premiere into After Effects

    Hi!
I imported a sequence from a Premiere Pro project using File -> Import -> Adobe Premiere Project...
The video in the sequence showed up in the After Effects project as a composition.  However, the composition did not include the sound from the sequence!  Is there a way to keep the sound from the sequence upon import into After Effects?
    Thanks

i`m sorry about the screenshot size, but i could only upload pics with 605 px width.
Nevertheless it seems that you saved my day. looks like it was all about the scale to framesize thing.
    thank you so much!!!!

  • Problems with importing to After Effects

    Hi,
I can't get my Motion projects imported into After Effects. I have read the manual and done exactly as instructed. When i try to import my Motion project file into AE, I get an error message in AE saying: "files of type "mofo" are not supported. I have no idea where the "mofo" comes from, since the projects are .motn format.
I was wondering if anybody else has same kind of problems, with Motion and AE?
The Motion version I am using is 3.0.2 and After Effects is the CS3 version.

Yes this is a known problem and has been discussed a few times on this forum. It only started being the case with CS3 unfortunately. The only work around is to rename the Motion Project with a .mov on the end of the name, and import to After Effects. This works but means that the very handy feature of 'edit original' stops working, and i've also noticed a number of instabilities (crashes etc) introduced as a result.
We have to hope they'll (apple and adobe) fix this in a future update.

  • Arbitrary data param not importing from Premiere Pro project into After Effects.

    Hi,
I have an AE SDK plugin effect that works in Premiere Pro and After Effects... the effect has a bunch of standard parameters and one Arbitrary Data parameter.
I believe that the Arbitrary data parameter is implemented correctly, and I have implemented all of the cases for PF_Cmd_ARBITRARY_CALLBACK...
    PF_Arbitrary_NEW_FUNC
    PF_Arbitrary_DISPOSE_FUNC
    PF_Arbitrary_COPY_FUNC
    PF_Arbitrary_FLAT_SIZE_FUNC
    PF_Arbitrary_FLAT_SIZE_FUNC
    PF_Arbitrary_FLATTEN_FUNC
    PF_Arbitrary_UNFLATTEN_FUNC
    PF_Arbitrary_INTERP_FUNC
    PF_Arbitrary_COMPARE_FUNC
    PF_Arbitrary_PRINT_SIZE_FUNC
    PF_Arbitrary_PRINT_FUNC
    PF_Arbitrary_SCAN_FUNC
The only issue I have found, is that when importing a Premiere Pro project into After Effects with the "Import -> Adobe Premiere Pro Project" option, the value in the Arbitrary Data
parameter is always the default. There is no problem saving or re-opening projects within AE or PP... and there are no problems with cutting and pasting instances of the effect.
Importing a Premiere Pro project into After Effects using the Dynamic Link works correctly... the Arbitrary data is imported.
    Thanks.

Some kind of answer would be awesome... there are Adobe staff members on here right?

  • Importing .AI file (multiple artboards) into After Effects imports all layers?

Okay, so I've been trying to figure out this issue that I am having but the problem is a bit wordy to explain.
What I want to do: Import an Illustrator file, that is a single artboard from a multiple artboard file into After Effects and ONLY import the layers from that artboard.
What is happening: Artboard 1 with shape 1, artboard 2 with shape 2, and artboard 3 with shape 3. When I export them (Save as --> .ai --> Save each artboard as a separate file), in .ai the layers are correct (ie only shape 1 on artboard 1), but when I import the .ai into AE, artboard 1 has shape 1, shape 2 and shape 3 (they are all separate layers).
How does Illustrator determine what is or isn't in an artboard? I am seeing the other layers but they are only 1x1 in AE.
I am using Illustrator CS6 and AE CS6 and I've tried it both on Mac and PC, and haven't gotten it to work. The weird thing is that it WAS working correctly before.

I have (hypothetically), a three layer file each with a rectangle. Each rectangle is on a separate artboard. When I save each artboard as a separate .ai file (ie "Save as --> save each artboard as separate file"), in each .ai file, only the layers in each artboard are in the separate ai files:
artboard_01.ai only has layer with rect 1,
artboard_02.ai only has layer with rect 2,
artboard_03.ai only has layer with rect 3,
This is good, BUT when I import into After Effects, all three layers appear in each comp generated from the imported .ai files
comp of artboard_01.ai has layer with rect 1, layer for rect 2 (no content), and layer for rect 3 (no content).
comp of artboard_02.ai has layer with rect 1(no content), layer for rect 2, and layer for rect 3 (no content).
comp of artboard_03.ai has layer with rect 1(no content), layer for rect 2 (no content), and layer for rect 3.

  • Low quality video after import from After Effects in FCP 7, but not FCP5

    Hi everyone,
I trying to export a video from final cut pro. This video has motion graphics I built in After Effects, as well as footage from my T2i camera. I then took it into FCP to drop in audio and edit all my elements together.
When I exported a 30 second preview a few days ago in FCP5, the .mov file retained the quality of the export from AE and looked great - no quality lost, smooth animations, high quality video.
However, I then upgraded to FCP7, and now the quality is lower and the video components are a bit grainy when I export using the same settings. I've tried tweaking the settings, different ways of compression, but nothing is giving me the same clean export. I've even tried changing the sequence settings and putting my footage back down.
The only other thing that's different is I compressed my T2i footage to ProRes422 before taking it into After Effects, however even the 15 seconds of original footage I didn't compress is grainy now (and so is the original and new graphic work) so I don't think that's it. When I change the timeline sequence settings, I can get it looking good in the preview - but as soon as I render it or send it to compressor it loses quality again.
The ONLY differently between the two exports was upgrade Final Cut, but that doesn't make any sense to me. I've even tried reopening the preview FCP file (which then asks me to update the file to FCP7) and when I do it exports grainy as well - and NOTHING else has changed in that file or the export settings since my initial export of a 30 seconds preview.
Does anyone have any suggestions on what the issue may be? Or, what settings I can use to retain the quality when exporting?
    Thanks,
    Lauren

Thank you so much! Although it's not exporting quite as clear as before, it's much, MUCH better now that I've corrected the timeline dominance - I'd say 95% better; and it will be re-compressed by my clients for web streaming so it doesn't need to be perfect - but the initial quality was garbage.
I suspect when I exported my T2i footage as a ProRes file, than imported into After Effects, then back into FCP something happened along the way that messed up the quality slightly. Although the only difference in my method between FCP5 and 7 was converting to ProRes; which I only did for editing purposes as the native T2i footage needs to be rendered... which ended up being redundant as all my After Effects work needed to be rendered anyway. Ho hum.
Do you think the ProRes conversion could account for the quality loss? It wasn't just the footage that was grainy/fuzzy, it was also the After Effects graphic work, which is why I didn't think the converstion could be the culprit. Hm. I'll have to look into this more!
Thanks again - and so sorry for my delayed reply, I went on vacation shortly after I posted that message and only just got back to this project now

  • .AVI files into after effects do not work? how do I fix?

When I record with my vivitar dvr 840xhd camera, and try to import the files into after effects. The files import into after effects just fine, except the little icon of the video is all grey. But when I put it into the comp and try to view it. The whole video is only a black screen. I try to watch it and find out that the audio works in it. but not the video. Throwing it into media encoder and trying to convert it only does the same thing, just a black screen with audio. But when I play the file on windows media player it works just fine. I have After effects CS5 and I run windows 7. Anyone have any good anwsers? Perferably one that does not reqire another program video converter to put it into the file type I. I tryed that before with many other video converters. I either loose quaility. If im filming in 60fps, it is reduced to 30fps. I can only convert so much in one clip. And most leave watermarks. I would much rather be able to import these .avi files into after effects without the wait and annoyance of a 3rd party program. Thanks for the help.

Probably not. AVI is just a generic container format and without any more info we will not be able to give you any proper answers. Even their website doesn't give any specifics. Use GSpot or MediaInfo to find out what CoDecs it is using exactly. Since the camera is based on Flash memory, though, I already get this ugly feeling it is using some atrocious non-standard MPEG4 derivative nad that would mean there is no chance at all to use it directly in AE...
