Can't import JPGS

Just trying to import some jpgs from a scanner. and i get this message on SOME of them,
they are typically greyed-out. When i select "All Files" they are blacked in but i get this message.
"Import: File error: 1 files(s) recognized, 0 access denied 1 unknown"
Thoughts welcome.

Open one of the problem JPEG files in Preview.  Then do Tools > Show Inspector.  What does it say for Image Size, DPI, Color Model and Colorsync profile?
Open the same JPEG in GetInfo  (select the file, then do Command-I  (letter 'eye')).  Under Sharing and Permissions, what does it say for your user name  (as in yourusername (me)).

  • My iPhoto can't import jpgs

I've got a folder-full of jpgs which I wanted to import into iPhoto '08. I literally was
opening this application for the first time since installing it weeks ago (I've done all
possible Tiger updates, iLife '08 software updates, firmware updates for my Mac Pro).
All these files were exported from Photoshop CS3 as plain old max. quality, 8-bit per
channel, 300 ppi, AdobeRGB-tagged jpgs. They open without problem in Preview, but
when I attempt to import them into iPhoto, I get a message that the files are unreadable
    and the import failed.
I've tried this repetitively--deleted the .plist file for iPhoto '08, rebuilt my photo library,
created a brand-new empty library and tried to import them, and it failed each time.
Interestingly enough, the tif originals that I made the jpgs from import without a problem,
and if I open a jpg in Preview and save the jpg again from Preview, this re-saved jpg can
    be imported.
What the heck is going on? I've stf'd here and haven't found a mention of a similar problem.

I retract my last post. It seems it was one of those problems that just needed a little close down, shut down, and reboot of the system. I tried several other sources of jpg files.. to no avail. This made me wonder if the problem wasnt something else, so decided to shut down and start fresh.
Not sure why this fixed it but everything is working normal now so no further responses needed. Still appreciative of this resource of info and the good natured people that put the time in to help those of us in need

  • CS3 - can't import jpg - files grayed out - Mac

I'm trying to complete a tutorial in Fireworks CS3 on Mac 10.5.6.
The step I'm stuck on is:
"Select File > Import and browse to the following folder on your hard disk:
    local_sites/cafe_townsend/fireworks_assets/
    Select banner-mockup.jpg and click Open.
An insertion pointer appears indicating where the upper-left corner of the graphic will be positioned."
None of the JPG files are selectable, they're grayed out.
Other files in that folder, TXT and PNGs are selectable.
Other JPGs that are not in the folder indicated are also selectable.
I can drag the file from Finder into the Fireworks document ok.
I've checked the Sharing & Permissions on the files and containing folders and they all have Read & Write.
I copied a JPG that was selectable for import elsewhere into the fireworks_assets folder, and it's still selectable (not grayed out).
The files were copied & pasted in an earlier tutorial step from a different folder (Macromedia Fireworks 8/Tutorial_assets).
Trying to import them from the original location also fails.
So it seems there's something specific to these JPGs causing Fireworks to not want to import them.
    I can't figure out what.
The specific file I can't import is attached.

Not sure why you can't import the file, I'd suspect something is goofed up with the actual JPEG if you can import other JPEGS with no issues. However, if you can drag and drop or  copy and paste the image into your Fireworks document then you're ending up with the same results the tutorial is aiming for anyway.

  • Can't import jpg's

I am trying to import jpg's to organizer, I have imported about 38,000 images but there are some in some folders and all in some folders that will not import.
I have tried to right click on the folder and choose import to organizer, no go says they are already there.
I then tried on the File button Get Photos and Videos and from files and folders it I highlight the missing jpgs and it seems to want to import them and then it says they are already in the catalog.
Could it be because they have the same name (ex. IMG_3600) as a jpg in another folder?  Does the organizer only allow one unique name per picture and if you have duplicate names in 2 different folders it will not show them?

I set up a category of Nature a sub cat under that of Ocean and a keyword tag under ocean of Lighthouses. I then tagged photos in two different folders with the lighthouse tag, about 5 shots in each folder out of 10-20 shots in each folder
I did a search on Lighthouses and it found the 5 that were in the folder I had open but unless I clicked on the other folder they didn't show in the main screen.  When I clicked on "show all" all the pictures in the folder then showed, lighthouses and nonlighthouses.
Does organizer not like folders? i.e. does it really want every photo in one large folder?
If I tag a photo that is buried in a folder somewhere it doesn't seem to help me to have to open every folder, I must have between 150 and 250 folders to find the photo it found.

  • Can't import JPGs created in Photoshop Elements

I get an error upon importing. Any ideas? I use Photoshop Elements 2.0

    Philippe, for future reference...
--First thing to know and remember is this...Do not drag any images, folder of images into the iPhoto Library in the Finder. Images have to be imported into iPhoto within the application. Do not scan images and save them into the iPhoto Library folder in the Finder. Save them to another location such as the Pictures folder or even the desktop. You can then import them into iPhoto.
--You have a folder of images on your hard drive and want to import them into iPhoto. Drag the folder of images into an open iPhoto Library window and the folder of photos will be copied into the library, resulting in a new roll with the name of the folder. You now have two copies of those photos, the ones in iPhoto's database and the ones on your desktop. You can keep the ones on your desktop that you just imported as backup or you can delete that folder.
-- you scan a picture/pictures and save it in a folder. You cannot scan directly into iPhoto or the iPhoto Library folder in the Finder.
You want all your photos in iPhoto so you import them into iPhoto.
Now you have two copies of that picture/pictures, so you can delete the originals that were in the scanned folder and keep the one/ones that were imported into iPhoto.
-- You download pictures from your camera into iPhoto.
There is now one copy of each of the pictures.
You want to change something about a picture you imported, such as
cropping it or changing the size, or changing the orientation.
Once you do that to a picture, you now have two copies of the picture
in iPhoto, the original and the edited one. The edited one will be in the library organize view. The original is packed away in an Original folder in your iPhoto Library folder under the date of the roll. You can always revert to the original by control clicking on the photo and choose "revert to orginal" You will not have this choice if you used iPhoto Diet to get rid of the Originals.
(a quick note on cropping within iPhoto...when you are in edit mode, you automatically will be in the crop mode with cross hairs to highlight the crop area. To finish cropping you must click the crop button and then go back to library view and your cropped picture will be there.
3.You want to use Photoshop or another graphic program to edit a picture in your iPhoto library.
You can open up prefs for iPhoto and choose "when double clicking on
photo ..do" choose "other" and select Photoshop. Now you can edit all
pictures in your iPhoto library in PhotoShop by double clicking. If you save the photo with the same name and as a flattened file it will be saved right into iPhoto and you will see the changes. If you don't want to save it into iPhoto then do a "save as" and save to the desktop. You will then have the original photo still in iPhoto and your new edited photo on the desktop.
Or, with iPhoto open, you can drag a picture from the library window
to your desktop (you see a + sign on the pic you are dragging). You now
have two of the same picture, one in the iPhoto library and one on your desktop. You can open up the one on your desktop in any graphic program and work on it. The one in iPhoto stays the same. You can also share/export the picture/pictures to your desktop or folder to work on them or do batch processing, etc. You will still have the originals in your iPhoto Library.
Or, you can open up the ~/Pictures/iPhoto Library/folders and option drag any
picture out of the folder to your desktop. Notice that you will see a plus sign while dragging the photo. This is copying the file to your desktop
I would advise anyone not to do this as they might forget to use the option key and drag the photo out. Next time you open iPhoto the photo will be missing.

  • Can't import JPGs but I can open with Preview

    iPhoto 4, OSX 10.3.9
I copied hundreds of JPGs (from XP) to OSX and tried to import them into iPhoto. I get an error message.
    "Unreadable Files
The following files could not be imported (they may be an unrecognized file type of the files may not contain valid data).
If I open the image with Preview and then save it as a JPG, I can import it, however it is impractical to do this with the volume of images I have. Is this a known issue? Are there any workarounds?

    Just about anywhere else...
iPhoto is a database and will import the pics to the iPhoto Library Folder when you add them to the library. It will not import pics from the iPhoto Library Folder as a protection against duplication. So, put the pics on the desktop, import them and trash the files from the desktop when you're finished.

  • Can't import .jpg's from a CD into iPhoto 8

My friend asked me to help her create a slideshow out of 434 jpeg photos she gave me on a CD. When I try to import them, iPhoto 8 accepts only 88 of them. I get the following error message:
    Unreadable Files 210
The following files could not be imported (they may be unrecognized file type or the files may not contain valid data).
They were taken by several different cameras but they are all .jpg files. I can view all of the photos on the CD in Finder. What could be the problem? Any ideas for a fix or workaround? Thanks so much ...
    Caroline

    Caroline:
Try copying them to a folder on the desktop first and then upload from there. That may do it.
    Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've written an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • Can't import jpgs from original file

I installed iPhoto6 (previous was 5) and it put my original photos into an original file (all jumbled together... not very nice of apple). I want to put some original jpgs from the original photo file (I made sure I own it and it is not locked) into iPhoto go get ready for iMovie. But, a box appears with "Unreadable Files: 1
The following file could not be imported. (The file is in the iPhoto Library folder.)"
    I would like:
#1 my old organization back so I can fine a folder with my original pictures from my camera by date
2# at least be able to drag a picture from an original file to iPhoto
3# within iPhoto, view my photos from the date of 2001, month of 2 and day of 23.
    Thanks

try iphoto 6 discussion board... this one is for iP4!

  • Can't import .jpg files from iPhoto Library

What is the meaning of the error message I invariably get when attempting to import a photo file? It goes like this:
"The file could not be imported: The file “Macintosh HD/Users/alex/Pictures/iPhoto Library/Originals/2006/20060415 To Aigina with grandad and grandma/DSC04837.JPG” can’t be imported; QuickTime couldn’t parse it: -2048"
    Many thanks, people.

One more thing: I went into iPhoto's preferences, in Advanced, and checked the first option (Importing: Copy files to iPhoto Library folder when adding to library). I then added one photo to the library.
Then, from iMovie, I selected that newly added photo and bam! it was in! So, I guess, iMovie can't handle correctly iPhoto Library photos if they have not been copied into the iPhoto Library folder structure, correct? Is that what the expected behavior of iMovie HD should be? or a bug to be addressed in future upgrades?
    Many thanks, as always.

  • I can't import JPGs into LR

I have tried copy, move and add, but LR refuses to import any JPGs into the catalog. There is no problem with importing RAW or DNG files. The error message is "cannot copy these files into destination".
I have checked the destination folders, they are the right place, but still won't import.
    I'm using LR4 on Mac OS 10.7

actually, I can manually copy the JPGs onto the hard drive I wish to store them on, then add them to the catalog from there, and then order them within the catalog. I should be just able to do this from import automatically, not have to do it manually!

  • Can't import .jpg

I deleted some pics from a 'last roll' and a) they disappeared from the main iPhoto library and b) when I try dragging them back in from the original .jpg files I get "The following files could not be imported (they may be an unrecognized file type or the files may not contain valid data)".
Sometimes I've had problems with importing directly from my camera so I drag the files (not any folders) into the iPhoto library folders on my hard drive from within the camera icon in the Finder window - I then try and manage them with iPhoto ie import them first, and I get the same message.
    Powerbook G4 17inch   Mac OS X (10.3.7)

I can open the pics with picture viwever. The problem is that they don´t show up in Iphoto. I have one I photo Library and there are pictures there. When I click them they open in picture viewer not in I photo.
I have also tried to import jpgegs from a CD that I definitively know not are in a Iphoto library.
The pre history was that before formatting my Imac hard disk and reinstalling my panther transfered all my important files settings etc to my Ibook G4 (wich has Iphoto 6).
When the installer then asked if it import settings etc via firewire I said yes.
Then when trying to open the pics with Iphoto I was told to get a newer version and then try again. The Iphoto with the panther disc was 2.01 ore something.
Then I installed Iphoto from I life 4 wich has the 4.01 version of I photo.
However I´ll make a try with the I life 6 that I have in my office. Maybe that Iphoto will work.

  • Can't import .jpg photos

I received a group of .jpg photos both by e-mail and on a CD and some of them will not import into iPhoto 09, I get the error message "the file is in an unrecognized format". Some of them import normally. I can open the bad ones in Photoshop and resave them but they still won't import to iPhoto. I can insert them into a slide show on iDVD and they are fine. They open in Preview and they are large, 5552 × 3616 pixels but nothing else looks strange. Any ideas?
    Thanks, Jim Easton

    Terence,
Thank you for this explanation. Like many of the other posters, I have images from a scanner that iPhoto won't import. Your post made me check their color profiles: all are grayscale. Saving them as TIFFs will indeed solve the problem for a lot of people but there is an easier way if you have Photoshop Elements. Open the image, choose Save As, and in the Save dialog uncheck "Embed Color Profile."

  • Can't import .jpg "Unreadable Files:"

I try to import several .jpg that I scanned w/ an all-in-one hp printer/scanner. These pictures open in all other programs EXCEPT iPhoto. The message I get is:
    Unreadable Files: 1
The following files could not be imported. (The file is in an unrecognized
    format.)
    Users/me/dir/dir/file.jpg
I tried saving it as a .tif and importing it and it worked but that is not an optimal solution. 1. it is time consuming 2. the file sizes are large.
    any ideas???
I have read other posts and they are all unanswered. Please Apple (or anyone else), answer this one.
    Thanks

    Update:
I named the file with the same number as an existing photo from my camera, copied it to a blank Compact Flash memory card, put that in my camera and tried to import...same error. So all I can conclude is the problem moves with the file -it's not the import method.
I then dragged a jpg from the BBC news website and dragged that into iPhoto... no problem. I opened the photo in Photoshop and saved it as jpeg with exactly the same name, making no adjustments, dragged that in and it works! The image from the web was saved with exactly the same compression options as my scan. What is going on....

  • After reinstall of OS and new HDD, can't import JPGs into iphoto from my SD card

My HDD failed - so I installed new HDD, reinstalled Snow Leopard and had Time Machine copy all my backed up content to my White Macbook (2007).
All my content is back - events etc in iphoto. But I just tried to import 200+ pictures from my camera's SD card, a process that has always worked flawlessly .... The thumbnails appeared blank on the Import screen. After clicking Import, and seemibgly going throufgh every picture, the error message was thatfiles could not be imported - The files are in an unrecognizable file format.
Any ideas? Any help much appreciated.
    Thanks, Johannes

    As a Test:
Hold down the option (or alt) key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Create Library'
Import a few pics into this new, blank library. Is the Problem repeated there?

I have just purchased a new Imac with iPhoto 11 on it and it says it doesnt recognise the jpeg files I am trying to import from my canon camera.. they dont open in preview either. On my old mac book pro with iPhoto 8 they import perfectly.. and open in preview perfectly... please help:( Iphoto is one of the main reasons I bought the imac so this is really dissapointing me.

First updatae to OS X 10.8.4, the current version - http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1658
If that does not help (and it probably is not the cause but should be installed) then either use image capture or the finder to move the photos to the deaktop adn try to import from there - if this works use yoru Camera's format command to reformat (and erase) yoou memory card
