Can't import mbox file back into Mail

Hi,
I archived my "sent messages" folder two months ago, and it became a mbox file of 5GB.
Now I as trying to import it back to mail, but it doesn't work.
I went to "Import Mailboxes", and selected "mbox files" in the Import window. Then I clicked "continue",
and chose the "sent messages" mbox file (user library > Mail > Archive mail).
Smaller mbox file appear in the next window, but this large one doesn't.
Does anyone know if there is a way to get access to this data?
I would be very grateful to get some hints...
Thanks.

If this was archived from Mac OS X Mail, then choose "Mail for Mac OS X", not "mbox files".

  • Importing .emlx files back into mail....please help

Hi, I am running the most current version of Tiger and Mail.
A few months ago, I accidentally deleted an account on mail.
This deleted all my emails from the inbox having to do with that account.
The other day, I bought File Salvage and salvaged a bunch of .emlx files that were old emails having to do with that account I deleted.
I would double click on one, and it would open just like a window in mail.
So I tried to drag and drop them into the fold were my other .emlx files were, hoping that when I relaunched mail, they would appear in the inbox I already have. But they never did. I am wondering if there is some way I can import them into mail again.
Any help would be appreciated greatly.
    Thanks in advance,
    Eddy

After selecting Mail for OS X for the type of data to import from, the text below reads:
"You will not be asked for the location of a folder containing mailboxes created by another copy of Mail for OS X."
The "location" of a folder containing mailboxes is not within the Recover.mbox folder. This is the actual location of the Recover.mbox folder.
Where is the Recover.mbox folder located? If on the Desktop, you select the Desktop for the location and then OK.

  • Can't import .mbox file

My mom recently did a Rebuild command on her Sent Mail folder and made all the messages dissapear. I found this topic: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=5574199 and, following the instructions in the reply, copied the Sent Messages.mbox file to my desktop. The file is over 700 mb which thankfully means the emails probably aren't erased. However when I tried to import the .mbox file back into Mail, it won't even let me select it, whether or not I take off the .mbox extention. I tried breaking it up with the script mentioned as well, but that will not recognize the file either! Anyone have any advice? This is for Mail 1.3.11
    Thanks!

I went back and realized my mistake: the Import dialogue in Mail and the mboxbreaker script was asking me to choose the folder the mailbox was contained in, and I was trying to select the mailbox itself.
I split up the file with mboxbreaker and re-imported the files into Mail. Everything seems to have gone smoothly. Thanks for everything Apple Discussions!

  • Can't import mbox file into Mail anymore

Hi all, I am getting nowhere with this issue...I have archived my Apple Mail inbox and then turned around and imported it into Apple Mail (so as to have it on the local computer, not the network) many times in the past. It no longer works. I got to File>Import Mailboxes. I get the window "Import data from:" and my choices for file formats are "Apple Mail, Microsoft Entourage, Netscape/Mozilla, Thunderbird, Eudora, Files in mbox format." I first chose "Files in mbox format" as I have in the past. I hit "Continue." I go to the folder where I keep my archived mail. I click the containing file for my most recent export, "Inbox 5.mbox." This opens a new window listing "Items to import" that I may check off. Every item on this list is an old mbox folder. My new export folder doesn't show up. If I go back, open the containing file I mentioned above, "Inbox 5.mbox" and click the actual mbox file, I get the message, "no valid mbox files were found."
I've found other threads referring to this and some say the solution is to pick the "Mail from Mac OSX" data type from the import list, the problem is, this is not an option for me!
If anyone can help I would appreciate it, this is really frustrating...

We have users who have been importing collections of old pine and alpine messages who are having problems since switching to SL.
I discovered that alpine has been saving to MBX format, so users ende dup with collections of mixed mbox and MBX files. The "file" command can tell you which file is which format. There is an old program called "mailutil" that can be used to convert MBX to mbox (available in linux "uw-imap" packages). It is also in MacPorts imap-uw, but the latter is not maintained and appears aimed at older versions of MacOSX. There is also a FileImport plugin for Euroda_OSE that seems to handle more of the .mbox files than Apple Mail does, but still has problems with .mbox files from pine for the period 2002--2005. The file command indicates the problem files have long lines. I tried splitting one of the files
using mh inc, but it had 1000's of messages and a large fraction have the long lines problem.
Can you read the archived messages using "mail -f <filename>"? What does "file" say?

  • Can't Copy Messages/Mailbox Back Into Mail

    Hi,
Something strange is happening, so I'm hoping someone here can help work it out. This is what I did:
    (1) In Mail, I had a sub-folder (Folder A) on my Mac. It was annoying me (because it was a sub-folder and I wanted to make a full folder), so I ...
    (2) Copied the Folder A.mbox to my desktop and then deleted the sub-folder in Mail.
    (3) I've been trying to move/copy the messages and/or mailbox back into Mail from my desktop but it won't budge. I've tried opening a new folder in Mail to paste the messages into, tried to import them, but nothing works. They're stuck on the desktop in Folder A.mbox.
    (4) the .emlx messages themselves are not corrupted as I can open them individually from the desktop. I can move, paste, copy them everywhere BUT Mail.
Does anyone here have any idea what's going on, and how I can move Folder A back into Mail where it belongs?
Thanks for any help or advice.

Hello, and welcome to the Discussions.
In earlier versions of Mail, each xxxx.mbox folder had its own index (different name for the index in Jaguar and earlier vs Panther. In Tiger, there is only one universal index, spanning all mailboxes -- this was done, most likely, to benefit Spotlight.
Thus, using the Finder, in pre-Tiger OSX, you could place a xxxx.mbox into the Mailboxes folder, and when you next launched Mail, it would find the newly added mailbox, and all would be well.
In Tiger, you can no longer simply move in a new xxxx.mbox, nor replace any xxxx.mbox folder, because the indexing will not recognize it, without an additional step of forcing Mail to reindex ALL mailboxes, by removing the Envelope Index -- you can force this to happen, by finding the Envelope Index file at the root level of the Mail folder, and removing (after having Quit Mail). When you then relaunch Mail, it will announce that is ready to import your mailboxes -- allow this to happen, and it will really only be reindexing all your mailboxes, including any into which you paste the xxx.emlx files, from any xxxxx.mbox folders that have been created with Mail 2.x, or that you have dragged into the Mailboxes folder.
In Mail 2.x, you can import mailboxes from any folder of xxxx.mbox folders (created with Mail 2.x), selecting only those you wish to copy, and these become additional xxxx.mbox folders in the Mailboxes folder, and the Import function takes care of the indexing issue.
    Keep us posted.

  • Getting .emix files back into Mail

A disastrous experiment with Entourage 2008 ended up with my entire Exchange box being wiped from my server, losing two years of messages. However, as I'd previously used this account in Mail, I've managed to salvage the folders, which are full of .emix messages (from Library/Mail).
However, I can't work out any way of getting these messages back into Mail. The messages are intact as I can open them individually, and Spotlight includes them in search results, but I really need to get them back into Mail.
    Any ideas?

Since this is an Exchange account, I guess you’re talking about .imapmbox mailboxes, right?
If Preferences > Accounts > Advanced > Keep copies of messages for offline viewing was set to All messages and their attachments (the default setting), then Mail 2.x maintains a local copy of server-stored mailboxes using the exact same format it uses for locally stored mailboxes, except the suffix of the mailbox folder in the filesystem is .imapmbox instead of .mbox.
You cannot import .imapmbox mailboxes directly into Mail because when you do File > Import Mailboxes and choose Mail for Mac OS X as the data format, Mail looks for .mbox folders only, but if Keep copies of messages for offline viewing was set to All messages and their attachments throughout the lifetime of the mailboxes (or since before the last rebuild), you can easily overcome that limitation by just changing the suffix to .mbox.
After having changed the suffix to .mbox, do File > Import Mailboxes, choose Mail for Mac OS X as the data format, and follow the instructions. Note that Mail wants you to select the folder that contains the mailboxes to be imported (i.e. the folder where the .mbox folders to be imported reside), not the .mbox folders themselves.

  • How to import modified files back into Muse

Maybe this is an easy sync issue....hopefully.
I've exported my html files from Muse (after publishing to Biz Catalyst) and want to modify the html, such as ad href's to divs in the slideshow, etc. How can I import these modified html files back into Muse so I can publish back to Business Catalyst?
I realize it's an easy solution to host the exported files on another server, but I'd really like to stay within the Muse/Biz Catalyst environment with updated html's.
    thanks much!!

There isn't a way at this time to import HTML files into Muse and expect it to load in Design mode for a subsequent re-publish. The only kind of editing that Muse supports today (outside of Muse) is through Business Catalyst's In-Browser editing feature but that is limited to editing only text (without any formatting or styles) and foreground images <http://www.adobekb.com/working-with-in-browser-editing_pt01.html>. Feel free to submit your feature request over at our Ideas section.
    Thanks,

  • Importing data file back into blank PDF - some data fields don't populate

I have created a writable PDF in Adobe LiveCycle 8. Once the form is completed the person filling out the form submits by email. The email is successfully received and the data file is complete (opening it in a browser verifies this). However, when I use try to import the data back into the PDF file (by opening Adobe Pro | blank form | managage form data | import data - only some of the fields are populated. I need this data to repopulate the form so I can print it and I also need to export it to Excel for other purposes. What am I doing wrong?

  • How can I put my emix files back into mail.

    Hi
I've trawled the forums and think I've tried all suggestions. My mail froze when collecting mail and on restart the messages were in the viewer window but when double clicked they came up with the message about them not been downloaded from the server. I then rebuilt the mailbox and all messages disappeared apart from one. The messages however, were in the correct folder as emix files, which can be read when double clicking on them. I've tried copying them into a new folder, I've tried putting the messages folder in a new folder xxxx.mbox and when I try to import it goes through the motions (quickly) and says it can be retrieved in import 5, which doesn't exist, and if I drag the xxxx.mbox folder into the mailboxes folder in my hom/librarymail it appears on the tree but doesn't show any contents, even when rebuilt. I have 10,000 messages in this mailbox. I have subsequently got a new MacBook Pro and even starting from scratch the problem remains - any help would be much appreciated. Thanks, Will
    MacBook Pro 1.83 15"   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   2Gb RAM

    Hi William.
The problem is probably that the index is corrupt and you need to completely re-create it rather than rebuilding individual mailboxes. I have no idea what the situation really is now after having tinkered with the contents of ~/Library/Mail/, though, so the following procedure may or may not work.
Verify/repair the startup disk (not just permissions), as described here:
The Repair functions of Disk Utility: what's it all about?
After having fixed all filesystem issues, if any, and making sure that there’s enough space available on the startup disk (a few GB, plus the space needed to make a backup copy of the Mail folder), try this:
    1. Quit Mail if it’s running.
    2. In the Finder, go to ~/Library/Mail/. Make a backup copy of this folder, just in case something goes wrong -- e.g. by dragging it to the Desktop while holding the Option (Alt) key down.
    3. Locate Envelope Index and move it to the Trash. If you see an Envelope Index-journal file there, delete it as well.
    4. Open Mail. It will tell you that your mail needs to be “imported”. Click Continue and Mail will proceed to re-create Envelope Index -- Mail says it’s “importing”, but it just re-creates the index if the mailboxes are already in Mail 2.x format.
Note: For those not familiarized with the ~/ notation, it refers to the user’s home folder, i.e. ~/Library is the Library folder within the user’s home folder.

  • Can't import Entourage database despite into Mail despite EVERYTHING?

I want to complete my transition to Apple but have not been able to import my 16GB Entourage 2004 database despite 7 billion (give or take) attempts, and AppleCare support sessions that ended up with the old finger pointing at Microsoft. But rebuilding the Entourage database several time and checking its integrity (it's ok) with Entourage's Database Utility hasn't changed anything. The list of things I've tried is below, but the result is always the same; It gets about 3 minutes into the process, maybe about 1/20th of the progress bar, then stops (at a different file every time -- you can read which one it's on in the import panel), then nothing happens because everything freezes, not just the program, but the entire computer, which I haven't seen since OS9. Meaning I get the beachball but no matter how long I wait (all night once) I can't force quit, can't quit from the dock icon, can't change programs, can't access apple menu, nothing but turn it off. By the way I've done such Mail imports successfully on other computers so I know I'm doing the basics right. AND (get this) I've been able to import from the same database into iCal and Address Book. I do suspect it's a Microsoft database issue but I've rebuilt it several time and verified its integrity with the to no avail. If anyone can help I'd be deeply appreciative, and be proudly all-Apple finally. The things I've tried unsuccessfully:
Started with the basic File/Import Mailboxes/Entourage as on other Macs
    Rebuilding Entourage database several times
    Rebuilding permissions multple times
    Restarting (billions of times)
Trying it with and without mailboxes set up in Mail
    Re-installing Mail and running update
Installing new OS system and running all updates (Archive and install)
    Running TechTools deluxe
Trying to import one folder at a time instead of all
Trying to drag Entourage folders to desktop then import as an mbox file (Mail doesn't recognize valid data)
Checked and installed any software updates, rebuilt permissions again, restarted
Ran Microsoft Autoupdate, I'm up to date
Tried doing it under Safe Boot
Checked the available disk space -- 360GB, plenty of room
Trying to drag Entourage messages to Mail (doesn't work)
No other problems with the computer
Anyone, please? You're unofficially crowned King/Queen of Apple and get a trophy for beating their AppleCare tech support if you can figure it out,
    THANK YOU,
    Neil

One thing to make sure when you are importing is that Entourage has to be running when you do the import.

  • Can't import all Entourage emails into Mail

    Hello all,
So I decided to finally switch over to Leopard. I thought about doing an archive/install or delete/install, but then figured I would first just try the upgrade to see how it went (especially because I have tons of software that the disks are back in America [I live in China] and could not reinstall them if I had to, etc)...
I did a full cloneable back-up with Super-Duper, then upgraded, and everything seemed OK. I decided to switch over to Mail.app (I used to use it like 2 years ago, then had wanted to try Entourage, but lately the simplicity of Mail.app beckoned again).
So I started to import my mail from Entourage. Everything went in pretty much fine, except for the SENT folder. It would import, and then when I looked, it was all Sent mail but only up to Oct 18,2008. I then deleted that "Import/Sent" mailbox in Mail.app, then tried to Import again, just checking the "Sent Mail" box when it asks you "which items do you want to import from Entourage", etc...
But still, it would import a huge sent-mail folder, but lacking emails from Oct 18-Dec 10 2008.
Any thoughts on why? Any suggestions on how to just get those SPECIFIC emails from Entourage and put them directly into Mail.app? It's over a month of Sent mails, which i actually need for my work (to check what I sent to which client, etc)...
    Thanks- Samantha

If this was archived from Mac OS X Mail, then choose "Mail for Mac OS X", not "mbox files".

  • Can't import mbox over 1gb to mail

Hello, Recently I had to do a clean install, and archived my mail boxes. I have successfully imported all but one, which doesn't seem to import properly. The import window stays open, says it's importing , then after a few hours(!), it says it has only partially imported the mail box, but when i look in the import folder, there are no files, no mail. This mail box was my main one, so is 1.38gb, is there a size limit to what mail will import? Is there any other way to open the mbox file, I did manage to open it in text edit, but it was incomprehensible to me.
I would hate to lose the last 6 months of mail.
I have tried opening in entourage, and thunderbird, but could not import.
    thanks

I don't know of another program that can read an archived mailbox though that's not to say that there isn't one. The fact that you can't successfully import the contents seems to me to suggest that it is perhaps corrupted which is very unfortunate. I guess it is a hard lesson and you wouldn't be the first to have had this happen to. If you have only tried the once to import the messages from the archive then give it another shot just in case a subsequent attempt is successful.

The export function from iCloud creates one single .vcf file with all the addresses in it. If you click on it on the desktop, it starts displaying each and every address as a separate vCard. However, "Tools/Import...Address Books...vCard file" doesn't do anything.
