Can't import mboxes

I helping a friend to set up her iBook. I want to to have all of her existing mail, since her iMac is getting sick. When I navigated to the mboxes on the iMac, I initially selected the Mail folder. Mail said that no valid mboxes were found.
The ibook and imac both run Mail 2.1.3 on OS 10.4.11.
Next, I went to iMac/Users/andi/library/mail/pop-andi/. I selected the pop-andi folder, but the Import folder only contains some of her Mail.
What have I done incorrectly?
Thanx.

Hi BDAqua,
Thanks for your suggestion. evidently, something is corrupted. I exported the mailbox folders using EMLX2MBOX, but only the Sent and Drafts mailboxes, and one of Custom mailboxes, were imported.
I tried importing the Inbox (in its exported form) by using the Mail for Mac OS X radio button, and then the Other radio button. In each case, I was told that no valid mbox files were found.
Next, I went back, and tried again to import the original Inbox. Neither attempts worked. Is there any way to fix this corruption? i have already repaired permissions on every disk in sight.

  • Can't import mbox file into Mail anymore

Hi all, I am getting nowhere with this issue...I have archived my Apple Mail inbox and then turned around and imported it into Apple Mail (so as to have it on the local computer, not the network) many times in the past. It no longer works. I got to File>Import Mailboxes. I get the window "Import data from:" and my choices for file formats are "Apple Mail, Microsoft Entourage, Netscape/Mozilla, Thunderbird, Eudora, Files in mbox format." I first chose "Files in mbox format" as I have in the past. I hit "Continue." I go to the folder where I keep my archived mail. I click the containing file for my most recent export, "Inbox 5.mbox." This opens a new window listing "Items to import" that I may check off. Every item on this list is an old mbox folder. My new export folder doesn't show up. If I go back, open the containing file I mentioned above, "Inbox 5.mbox" and click the actual mbox file, I get the message, "no valid mbox files were found."
I've found other threads referring to this and some say the solution is to pick the "Mail from Mac OSX" data type from the import list, the problem is, this is not an option for me!
If anyone can help I would appreciate it, this is really frustrating...

We have users who have been importing collections of old pine and alpine messages who are having problems since switching to SL.
I discovered that alpine has been saving to MBX format, so users ende dup with collections of mixed mbox and MBX files. The "file" command can tell you which file is which format. There is an old program called "mailutil" that can be used to convert MBX to mbox (available in linux "uw-imap" packages). It is also in MacPorts imap-uw, but the latter is not maintained and appears aimed at older versions of MacOSX. There is also a FileImport plugin for Euroda_OSE that seems to handle more of the .mbox files than Apple Mail does, but still has problems with .mbox files from pine for the period 2002--2005. The file command indicates the problem files have long lines. I tried splitting one of the files
using mh inc, but it had 1000's of messages and a large fraction have the long lines problem.
Can you read the archived messages using "mail -f <filename>"? What does "file" say?

  • Can't import mbox into Mail

    Hi,
I thought I had backed up my mail when I was upgrading to a new computer.
I did this by copying the files from Username/Library/Mail/V2/
When I try to import the mbox files by either using the "Import Mailboxes" from Apple Mail or Files in mbox format it gives me the error message "No valid mbox files were found."
I can see all of the folders, emails and attachments in the mbox files when I browse them in the Finder so I know the files are there but I can't seem to get these mbox files to import into Mail.
Does anyone know what's going on with my mbox files or if I didn't grab the right files?
I'd really like to get these emails back into Mail.
    Thanks.
    Demetre

In case someone also has this problem, I seemed to have figured it out.
I had my backed up files in a folder on the desktop.
If you try importing by selecting the mbox directly it says it is not a valid mbox file.
But, if you choose the Desktop it ended up working without any problems and recognizing the mbox files.

  • Can't import mbox files

I'm trying to move some mail from one account to another, but I'm having issues moving Mail. I export the mailboxes on one account, but I get an error when I try to import them on the new account. I've tried importing using the "Apple Mail" option and with the "mbox" option. How can I remedy this?

    I found a solution.
When I tried importing the mailboxes, I was selecting "Files in mbox format," because that's what they are, right? No. Apparently, I needed to select "Apple Mail" instead.
That imports everything under an Import folder, and then I can select the emails and drag them to the appropriate inboxes (after re-setting up the accounts).
Ugh, this is not easy. But I'm getting close.
(Oh, step 6 will be to clear off Time Capsule and start a new backup. But only after I'm convinced things are running right. Obviously, I will be looking at other options for catastrophic backup in the future.)
Another note: I first tried copying my entire user folder to my external drive. But after a few minutes of copying, that failed, saying that I didn't have permission to copy one or more files. It didn't tell me what it was, or ask whether to skip it. It just failed. So that's why I was left to selectively pick files.
Another lesson learned: Know your Time Capsule password. If you rely on Keychain for this, and your machine dies, you're going to have a hard time recovering (if it's possible).

  • Can't import mbox over 1gb to mail

Hello, Recently I had to do a clean install, and archived my mail boxes. I have successfully imported all but one, which doesn't seem to import properly. The import window stays open, says it's importing , then after a few hours(!), it says it has only partially imported the mail box, but when i look in the import folder, there are no files, no mail. This mail box was my main one, so is 1.38gb, is there a size limit to what mail will import? Is there any other way to open the mbox file, I did manage to open it in text edit, but it was incomprehensible to me.
I would hate to lose the last 6 months of mail.
I have tried opening in entourage, and thunderbird, but could not import.
    thanks

I don't know of another program that can read an archived mailbox though that's not to say that there isn't one. The fact that you can't successfully import the contents seems to me to suggest that it is perhaps corrupted which is very unfortunate. I guess it is a hard lesson and you wouldn't be the first to have had this happen to. If you have only tried the once to import the messages from the archive then give it another shot just in case a subsequent attempt is successful.

  • Can't import .mbox file

My mom recently did a Rebuild command on her Sent Mail folder and made all the messages dissapear. I found this topic: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=5574199 and, following the instructions in the reply, copied the Sent Messages.mbox file to my desktop. The file is over 700 mb which thankfully means the emails probably aren't erased. However when I tried to import the .mbox file back into Mail, it won't even let me select it, whether or not I take off the .mbox extention. I tried breaking it up with the script mentioned as well, but that will not recognize the file either! Anyone have any advice? This is for Mail 1.3.11
    Thanks!

I went back and realized my mistake: the Import dialogue in Mail and the mboxbreaker script was asking me to choose the folder the mailbox was contained in, and I was trying to select the mailbox itself.
I split up the file with mboxbreaker and re-imported the files into Mail. Everything seems to have gone smoothly. Thanks for everything Apple Discussions!

  • Can't import mbox file back into Mail

    Hi,
I archived my "sent messages" folder two months ago, and it became a mbox file of 5GB.
Now I as trying to import it back to mail, but it doesn't work.
I went to "Import Mailboxes", and selected "mbox files" in the Import window. Then I clicked "continue",
and chose the "sent messages" mbox file (user library > Mail > Archive mail).
Smaller mbox file appear in the next window, but this large one doesn't.
Does anyone know if there is a way to get access to this data?
I would be very grateful to get some hints...
    Thanks.

If this was archived from Mac OS X Mail, then choose "Mail for Mac OS X", not "mbox files".

  • Can't import imap mailboxes

    It's a long story.
It started when I created two mail folders with the same name. This caused (I think) my mail program to disable its self- for what ever reason, it stopped receiving mail, would go offline whenever I tried to check my mail. I have several mailboxes set up in mail for work. I copied them to my desktop. we deleted my old account and folders, and created a new account. But mail will not import my imap mailboxes. It imports mbox mailboxes, but not imap. Can anyone help? It's mail version 1.3.11

I think our techs deleted all of those folders on the server, because of the problems we were having with the duplicates. My program would not connect with any of the folders, even after re-synching, so we thought we would delete them and re-import them.
BTW, I think it' s strange that any mail program will allow folders with duplicate names to be created. You would think you'd get a warning message, or that it just wouldn't be possible.
I believe there is a method for doing provided here
at the Discussions but I need to locate it.
If these IMAP account mailboxes were created and
stored on the server, you shouldn't need to re-import
anything after deleting an re-creating an IMAP
account. All server stored mailboxes should be made
available again in Mail and re-synchronized with the
    server.

  • Mail 4.1 fails to import mbox files

I'm trying to move mail from one user account to another (don't ask why). So I went into Mail and did an Archive Mailbox, once for Inbox and once for Sent. So far so good. Two mbox folders were exported, each containing about 100MB of mail. I put them on a share. Then I switched to my other user account and did an Import Mailboxes, and chose the "Files in mbox format" option.
But Mail fails to import them, claiming that "no valid mbox files were found." I've tried every combination of selecting their parent folder and selecting each mbox folder separately and together. Only one level of their contents is visible in the Finder, and Mail can't import directly from them either.
I've also tried importing using the "Apple Mail" option. But that fails also, claiming that my messages were only partially imported and they would appear in a new "Import" mailbox-- which never appeared.
Is this a known issue for anyone else?

Is that the "from" account's /Home/Library/Mail/ folder? That folder should not be empty unless the contents were moved or removed. However, the "to" account's folder may indeed be empty if no account has yet been setup. And, you will need to be started from the FileVault protected account or you'll have no access to any of its content.
If all else fails try copying the /Mail/Mailboxes/ folder (not the individual contents but the entire folder) from the "original" mail account to your Home folder on the computer to which you are trying to import. You can then import directly from the folder.

  • How can i import contacts from another AIM account to this new one

If you reference my last ichat question, you will see that I have had serious problems and had to create a new account.
How can I import contacts from another AIM account to this new one??

    Hi,
Use AIM for Mac and use the Export and Import features.
Other than that it is a question on making sure every Single Buddy has more than just their Screen name in the IChat Address Card so it is added to the Address Book and dragging them back from there

  • How can I import my old Appleworks spreadsheets into Neo Office or Pages

I am a new MBP owner and have some spreadsheets in Appleworks from my old iMac. I don't have Appleworks on my new MBP. I have downloaded Neo Office and could use it to create a new spreadsheet but can't import my previously created ones. Must I retype then? Or...as an alternative, I have iWorks. Can I import them into Pages? How? Thanks for any help.

The above suggestion didn't work for me. However, I did find this site that helped me--and it might help someone else:
    http://neowiki.neooffice.org/index.php/OpeningAppleWorksdocuments
It worked for spreadsheet--now I have to try to convert a data base document in Appleworks.

  • Upgraded to 10.6.8 and now can't import photos from Olympus camera

    1. Recently bought a new Olympus VR310 digital camera.  I couldn't get either Image Capture (6.0.1) or iPhoto (9.1.5) to import images from day one, onto my Mac Mini running Snow Leopard 10.6.8.  However, if I took the SDHC card out of the Olympus and put it into an older  Canon Ixus digital camera , and used that to upload, then both Image Capture and iPhoto worked perfectly.  So it's not the card.  Or the USB connection.  It's something special to the Olympus and the Mac.  Obviously I tried all the usual stuff about dumping plist files etc.  Nothing worked.
    2. The problem manifests itself, when the Olympus is connected,  as Image Capture being unable to show more than one, if any, thumbnails, and it is unable to import at all.  In iPhoto the problem manifests immediately it calls up the Olympus as a connected camera.  The dreaded spinning beachball of death kicks off, and the program 'stops responding'.  Even after I quit iPhoto and unmount the Olympus, iPhoto will not open without the spinning ball of death until I restart.
    3. Anyway, I tried connecting the Olympus to my son's Macbook, (System 10.6.7, Image Capture 6.0.1 and iPhoto 9.1.1) and all worked perfectly.  Hmm… so it's NOT just down to the Olympus.  It's something to do with my setup.
    4. I also have a bootable USB drive connected to the Mini, so I booted into that, so I then have my computer and my user preferences etc running under the bootable drives System 10.6.6, Image Capture 6.0.1, and iPhoto 9.1.5.  That worked perfectly with the Olympus too.  So it's not my the combination of my user settings, Image Capture 6.0.1, or iPhoto 9.15, or the  Olympus.
    5. My guess then was it was some corruption of the system on the Mac Mini.  So I reinstalled the Mac Mini system, from the install DVD, so I had a nice fresh Snow Leopard 10.6.0.  That gave me Image Capture 6.0.1 and iPhoto 9.1.5.  When I attached the Olympus, everything worked perfectly.  Great.
THEN, I updated the system from Apple's Oftware Update, all the way to 10.6.8, which is where I started from.
    6. And guess what.  Nothing works anymore. Immediately before the update, the Olympus importing worked.  Immediately afterwards it didn't.  I'm back where I was at the beginning, with exactly the same problem..  I can't import from the Olympus but the Canon is fine. (see 1 and 2 above)
So, it seems to me that the Upgrade straight to 10.6.8 is what caused the problem.  And given I could get the Olympus to work on my son's computer (system 10.6.6) it's something between 10.6.6 and 10.6.8.  Why the Canon works on all the permutations, and not the Olympus, I don't know.  I don't know why the  Olympus ONLY doesn't work with 10.6.8.
    7. Obviously there are tedious workarounds (but none that lets iPhoto capture the photos directly) which I can use to get the images into iPhoto eventually, but hey, this is an Apple Mac, who wants to be doing tedious workarounds all the time.
I've had Macs since 1984  (I'm that old…) so I'm a fan, and I'm reasonably competent, but this has me stumped.
    Any ideas, anyone.
    Any help much appreciated.
    Ian Waterston

You launched iPhoto and from its Preferences you selected Connecting camera opens.....

  • Not enough space on my new SSD drive to import my data from time machine backup, how can I import my latest backup minus some big files?

I just got a new 256GB SSD drive for my mac, I want to import my data from time machine backup, but its larger than 256GB since it used to be on my old optical drive. How can I import my latest backup keeping out some big files on the external drive?

    Hello Salemr,
When you restore from a Time Machine back up, you can tell it to not transfer folders like Desktop, Documents. Downloads, Movies, Music, Pictures and Public. Take a look at the article below for the steps to restore from your back up.

  • After I import a movie file from the camera memory card, Imovie 10.0.1 acts as if the memory card is empty though I know it isn't.... I can't import that file to iMovie again.. is that the way it worksnow?  Thank you, Filippo

On IMac 10.9  After I import a movie file from the camera memory card to Imovie 10.0.1 it acts as if the memory card is empty though I know it isn't.... I can't import that file to iMovie again.. is that the way it works now?  Anyone know?  Thanks, Filippo

I would like to know this too. I imported a lot of files, then Imovie crashed. I went back in and they are not in imovie at all.
I reconnected the camcorder to import again and though they are still on the camcorder, I no longer see them in the available list of files to import. I'm sure there is some sort of simple setting somewhere that reveals all files even if it thinks they are imported.
    Thanks
