Can't import .mov file how to convert it

Hi Guys
I have been sent ten .mov video files which i can open it in quick time but can't import into imovie 09
I have tried to re-save in quick time but didn't make any difference, the files are still not able to import, also the person who sent them labeled the files with a / in the name I changed this but still made no difference,
the properties are
H.264, 320 x 240, Millions
AAC, 2 channels, 32000 Hz
FPS: 12
data size: 474 KB
data rate: 198.26 kbit/s
current size - 478 x 359 pixels
I want to be able to import them all into imovie 09 so I can edit them and join together, can you recommend a reliable free software that I can do this.
Any help would be greatly appreciated
Thanks
P

Thanks so much for the great advice, I downloaded mpeg streamclip and I have been playing around with converting my video.
There are many different options and I have tried a few but the quality of the picture is slightly pixelated. Can you advise me about the best option to use to get the best quality picture.
I want to be able to edit it in imovie, so I was exporting it to quicktime but there are many other options which would you recommend?
When I exported it to quicktime I tried the following options
I have tried compression -
Apple motion jpeg A
png - sound played but picture was frozen and didn't play
Tiff - same thing as png
but there is an endless list and I'm not sure what it all means.
There are also many different frame sizes, I use (4:3) in imovie but it also had a 320 x 240 unscaled I'm not sure what this means?
Are there any other options/boxes I should be altering/checking?
Sorry for asking so many questions.
I'm not really very familiar with all these terms, it's a completely new language to me.
Any advice would be really appreciated
Thanks again for helping me out : )

  • Can't import .mov files from my camera into iPhoto

I am not able to import .mov files from my kodak camera into iPhoto. It says the file is not readable. Also, if there are any photos after the video file, those are said to be unreadable too, even if I select just the photots for import. I tried to import the .mov file with image capture as well, and that gave me an import error also. I can view the file fine on my camera and iPhoto and image capture both will give me the properties of the video file but will not import. I have imported .miv files before with no trouble. I have tried several different files with the same results. Even tried different memory cards. Not sure how to get this file on my computer or why there is a problem all of the sudden.
    Thanks.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions,
What model of Kodak is it?
There is a discussion thread on this topic: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=11942367&#11942367
Try using a media card reader (sometimes built into printers) to see if that allows the import. Others seem to report having luck by importing the movies off the card using a different computer, deleting them, and then importing the pictures.
    Hope that helps.

  • Can't import .MOV files

    Hello,
Whenever I try to import .MOV files for editing, I get the following error message:
    File Import Failure:
    File format not supported.
I looked it up and Premiere Pro CS3 does support MOV format; why is this happening? I don't have any QuickTime software installed right now, I use VLC as an alternative to playing MOVs because honestly I loathe the QuickTime program. I thought Premiere Pro had a built-in QuickTime decoder anyway.
    Any ideas? Thanks.

    Wow Eddie,
That was quick. Two things that you might think about for that page (your link), would be the addition of "30 days, with no chance of re-install and no rolling the computer's clock back," and "be sure to use all the proper tools for completely removing the "trial version," PRIOR to attempting to install the "full version." These have proved to be gottchas' based on the # of posts to the forum. Otherwise, perfect link and something that Adobe should have had in bold red print on their download page, as Jim points out. If the above material was on the link and I missed it - well, never mind.
    Cody,
Maybe it would have been better to state your concerns differently in the initial post. Something along the lines of "I have the trial version of CS3, and cannot export to DivX, etc." would have saved a lot of speculation on the part of the forum participants. I, too, assumed that you wished to edit DivX and were ripped that it was not easy. Oh, it can be done, with limited quality success, but often requires several intermediate steps, even to the point of using another program to transfer the material to DV tape, for Capture by PPro, with the resultant losses for already lossy material.
As you point out, DivX (and its cousins) do a lot of pretty good things for delivery of video. I dislike them only because clients often walk in with them and want them edited. However, I am going to DVD 99% of the time, so I like material that is uncompressed to begin with - just like PPro does.
As for Photoshop covering all bases - well not quite. It is very strict about Importing JPG images. Too many times I've had to Open them in another app, with less strict requirements, Save_As, before PS would even touch them. OTOH, it is more tolerant of varied formats, in general, than is PPro. One reason - most of those formats have been around almost as long as PS.
Sorry that the car analogy didn't do it for you. I'll try better next time.
If you do go with the full version of CS3 (unlikely from the sound of it), please see my note to Eddie. You MUST uninstall the trial version completely and clean the system with tools from Adobe, PRIOR to any attempt to install the full version. If you miss, even one tiny piece, you will have problems, either with the installation, the working of PPro or the Functional Content.

  • How can I import .mov file into dvd studio pro?

    Hi,
I have a .mov file and want to but a dvd with menu and chapters. But when I try to import the .mov file into dvd studio pro it says Incompatible format. How can I import my .mov file in to dvd studio pro?

    Two ways…
Transcode into a codec like Pro Res, import into DVDSP and let it do the encoding.
    Or better yet:
Import into Compressor, choose a DVD preset and let Compressor encode. It will make two files, separate video and audio files. Import those into DVDSP.
    Good luck.

  • Can't Import Mov file into Ppro CS4

I have imported all sorts of mov files but one is from a SONY V1 and won't import. I get an error message saying there is a codec missing. In VLC player it takes along time to play and  it says the codec is MPEG-1/2 video (mpgv), 1440x1080, 29.97. In QT player the video is black but the audio is fine. How can I import this into Ppro?

Do you have QT Player Pro (US$30 upgrade/unlock)? If so, load the file, and hit Ctrl+J for the properties panel. QT Player has a limited properties screen, but I do not recall the keystroke. Also, QT Player Pro, if it will play the file, can also Export to other formats/CODEC's, and I use it for that purpose often.
Also, the free MediaInfo might do better, than G-Spot.
Without knowing the exact CODEC, looking for it might prove difficult.
Also, VLC comes with a bunch of internal players and CODEC's, so it can play stuff, that will not work in other apps., which require the installed CODEC's. There are several Apple-only CODEC's, that do not have any PC counterpart. In that case, you'd need to Open that file on a Mac, with the proper CODEC, and then Export (basically converting) it to another format/CODEC.
    Good luck,
    Hunt
PS - here is an ARTICLE, that might offer a bit more background on CODEC's.

  • Aperture 3.4.1 can't import .mov files

I upgraded to Aperture 3.4.1 on my OS 10.8.2 iMac and can no longer import video (.mov) files from my Canon powershot S95. I get an unsupported file error. iPhoto allowed me to import but the previews are garbled in Aperture and it can't play the videos. Has anyone else seen this problem or know of a solution?

Sounds familiar. Check to see if you have a file called com.apple.xpchelper.cache in your /System/Library/Caches directory. If you're not sure how to get there, go to the Finder, and go to the Go menu, and select Go to Folder... , then type in (or paste) /System/Library/Caches
If it's missing, you'll need to reinstall your OS. Even if the file is there, you may still need to reinstall the OS and/or Aperture if you're having trouble playing or viewing movies.

  • Can't import .mov file from iphoto

Can anyone tell me why I can't import an .mov file into imovie from iphoto. The help manual says I should be able to but. when I try, the .mov files on the import window are greyed out and not selectable. I thought imovie played this type of file.

MOV files are compatible with iMovie '08 if, and only if, both the audio and video compression formats are "edit" compatible with iMovie '08 and the MOV file container does not contain incompatible extraneous tracks (e.g. a "Tween" track). Kodak, for instance, stores its video clips as MPEG-4 video (compatible with iMovie '08) and µ-Law 2:1 compressed audio (which is not). In this case, all you would need to do would be to convert the µ-Law compressed audio to a compatible compression format like AAC (MPEG-4 audio). Another example would be a slideshow made in iPhoto. In this case a "Tween" track is used to transition between slides but is never removed once the transition is applied and results are re-saved in the MOV container. If you delete or strip out this track, the file then becomes compatible with iMovie '08.

  • Can't import .mov file?

I downloaded an mov file....then I imported it into iMovie....shows up in the Event Library, but I don't see the video when I drag it into my project.... (I can hear the audio)
    Any ideas?
    Thanks-

.mov is a container not a compression type. It can contain various audio and video compression formats, some of which may not be compatible with imovie. If you open the file in QT and look in the inspector window it should tell you what compression types are used. We can then look at what you need to do to convert them into something imovie can use.

  • Can't import .mov files into event window in i movie

took video on panasonic tz40 in progressive scan. the files are mts. converted these files to .mov hd files in wondershare video converter but they wont import into event window. it says they are going but nothing appears except one file appeared out of a group i tried to import.tried converting to mp4 as well but same thing. tried dragging into event tells me files incompatible any clues
    thanks

I've seen where you've helped a lot of people and hopefully you can help me as I'm stumped. I have a Canon Vixia HFS200 and having trouble getting some movie clips to import from SD card. In the past, if a 'still' pic is taken on the same card, iMovie won't recognize anything as being importable. If I deleted the photos, I was able to import without a problem but this time, there are no stills on the card but still doesn't recognize anything importable, even though there are 140 or so .MTS files.
I've tried a conversion software that I was able to view them but had the company logo over the top. I wasn't sure if there was a way to manually or 'force' them to import? Appreciate any suggestions.

  • Can't import mov files into Final Cut Pro

I can't seem to import some .mov files into FCP.  The codecs showing in "info" for the files are DV/DVCPRO - NTSC, Linear PCM, Timecode.  I have other files which I can import into FCP and they show the exact same codecs in their info page.  I have no trouble opening either in Quicktime.

What is the origin of these files?  You may want to use QT or Compressor to re-encode them to the same codec.  Possbily they are very old QT versions.  But yes, where did they originate from?

  • Can't import .mov file into iMovie

I have a video clip in .mov format that won't seem to import so that I can edit it. I'm a guy who's worked with windows for years and I am Mac illiterate. Is there a reason why I can't import the clip, but it still plays in quicktime?
    G5   Mac OS X (10.4.4)

    Hi Solace,
    welcome to this forum
to give you some background info for better understanding in the future:
the file extension".mov" is a bit irritating, should NOT be translated with "movie"! a .mov is just a socalled container, it can contain (sic) many kind of media: stills, music, VR...- and for sure video.
just to impress you, have a look in this list:
Apple's list of formats supported by QT
iMovie is an edit-app meant to work with firewire-connected miniDV camcorders..... you can import "other" files&formats, but then it gets a bit tricky....
so, my usual guess, you're trying to import some mpegs (contained in a .mov file, you don't read .mpg as suffix.....)
some very good advices here, in plain english:

  • Can't import MOV file ! in PREMIER CS3 3.0

I can't Import any MOV file ? it say some things like code...
    What can i do ??

Could that error message be referring to "CODEC?"
Do you know what CODEC is used in that MOV file? That is what is missing.
Some Apple CODEC's can be installed without QT Player, but it installs many. QT Pro installs even more. However, there are some, that are Mac-only, and will never install on a PC.
This ARTICLE will tell you more about the MOV (and AVI, WMV, etc.) formats, which are but "wrappers." For a more complete discussion on CODEC's, in particular, read down for CODEC's a Primer.
    Good luck,
