Can't import MP4s into iMove '08

I recorded some videos on my Nokia N95 and wanted to put them into iMovie and export them onto YouTube after some editing, but iMovie won't import my MP4s! Are there any free and painless ways to convert MP4s into more compatible formats for use with iMovie '08?
Any help greatly appreciated!

Oh sorry!! It turns out that when you import movies into iPhoto '08, when you export them they come out as images, instead of movies; how strange!! :S You can view movies in iPhoto but you can't get them out of there, thanks for your help anyways , you can drag and drop movies from iPhoto into iMovie so I'm all sorted now.

How to import MP4 into iMovie09

You will need to convert it to something that iMovie can edit.
    1) The first step is to see if QuickTime can play it. See if you can open it in QuickTime Player.
If you can, Proceed to Step 3
    2) If QuickTime cannot play it, I would try to download a set of open source codecs called Perian. They will handle many odd codecs like this. Go to Perian.ORG and download them. Then go back to step 1.
Note: If Perian does not work for you, come back for some more ideas.
    3) Once QuickTime can play it, you need to convert it to something iMovie can edit. If you have QuickTime Pro, use that. If you would prefer a free alternative, download MPEG STREAMCLIP from Squared 5. Drag the 3G2 clip into MPEG Streamclip and then FILE/Export to QuickTIme...
Choose Apple Intermediate Codec (for highest quality) or choose h.264 (for smallest file size) and save it in a place you can find it.
    4) Now open iMovie, and use FILE/IMPORT...MOVIES to import the converted file into iMovie for editing.

  • Can't import videos into iMovie

    Hello, there!
I just captured a few videos with my screen capture app on my windows laptop. After I transferred them onto my iMac and converted them into .mp4 files i wanted to import them into iMovie but when i selected them only video 4 and 6 out of 6 videos imported into iMovie. i don't know whats the problem when i try again to import the other videos he is loading for like 1 second and nothing happens. i have already tried to restart iMovie and have also restarted my mac.
Also, this is not the first time something like this happens. but last time the problem just disappeared after a few retries...
please help! i want to upload them to youtube as soon as possible!

iMovie uses QuickTime file formats or DV Stream files directly from a camcorder.
If your files don't open or play properly in QuickTime Player they will not "import" into iMovie.
If you're authoring on a PC you must keep this basic fact as part of your your export scheme.
iPod videos are usually 320X240 and will not look good when scaled up to DV dimensions. Some use 480 width MPEG-4 video codecs that could scale but you may not be happy with the results.
Most Windows exports use Windows only codecs and this is the reason you're not seeing the video. Try exporting as a DV format (blah.dv) from Movie Maker. It may only appear as an option export to .AVI using those codecs.

  • Importing mp4 into iMovie for editing

I am using iMovie 08 and I want to import my mp4 movies from iTunes into iMovie to edit. Can this be done?

    Hi
iMovie and iDVD has a very limited amout of Video-Codecs they can use
They don't report when they fail. Even if import to Event's is no guarantee
,mov - is no Video-CODEC - it is a container (sort of folder)
QuickTime-player can open so many more. Open Your .mov here.
Then open Inspector [ cmd + I ] and read
    - Video formatted (CODEC) as : nnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn
    - Frames per Second : YY.yy fps
    What does they say ?
    Yours Bengt W

  • Can I import video into iMovie Theater directly?

In iPhoto I created a Slideshow with Music of an iPhoto Album of pictures and video clips. When exported this creates a   .m4v  file.
Can I directly get this file into iMovie Theater? Without first going to iMovie, importing the .m4v file and Sharing it to Theater, which creates a .mp4  file
In other words, can I spare this extra time (and effort for the good iMac; it gets quite hot when rendering)?
(I do not know the difference between these two file types.)
    Thanks for your advice/pointers/solutions

  • Can't import videos into imovie from movie files

I am having difficulty importing .mov files into iMovie.  When I go to file>import>videos, I can find my .mov files I want to move to iMovie.  It says it is converting.  The files show up in my iMovie folders in Finder but no thumbnails are showing up in iMovie.  Any suggestions?

The audio codec looks fine. The video codec is h.264 which is usually good for iMovie, but there can be variants that iMovie cannot handle. Another interesting thing about the h.264 is that it is anamorphic, which means it stores as 1440x1080, but simulates 1920x1080 by using rectangular pixels.
If I were trying to make this work, I would try converting it using a free tool called MPEG Streamclip, available here. I use the Beta version. http://www.squared5.com/svideo/mpeg-streamclip-mac.html
Drag your clip into MPEG Streamclip. Then click FILE/EXPORT TO QUICKTIME. For Compression, choose Apple Intermediate Codec. Leave the audio codec unchanged.
    For Frame size, choose 1920x1080.
Check Interlaced Scaling, and for Field Dominance use Upper Field First, but if it looks bad, you can try checking "Deinterlace Video".
Click Make Movie. Give it a name and store it where you can find it.
Now try importing into iMovie using FILE/IMPORT MOVIE.

  • Can't Import iPhoto into iMove 6

  • How can I import mp4 to iMovie 09?

What I'm doing is going to File -> Import -> Movies and clicking on the .mp4 file on my desktop. In iMovie, the loading bar opens for a brief second saying "desktop" with a blank bar, and then it goes away leaving iMovie sitting there as if nothing happened. I've tried free converters but haven't had much luck unfortunately
Also, will I be able to import this to FCP X? I'm very close to buying it, and if I can import mp4 I probably will. I'm not very good at editing, but I feel that I could learn FCP X easier than FCP 7.

I sometimes work in FCE, so the layout is almost identical the old FCP, it is nothing like iMovie learning curve was steep the first week or so. Toughest ones to memorize were the ripple roll, slip, slide tools for me.
The new iMovie got so powerful with filters and CoreVideo, that it kinda beats the purpose of FCE usage for me. But the Live Type app is a joy to play with - the font made out of smoke, fire or popping daisies is exquisite.
The most discouraging thing in FCE or FCP is the amount of time you will spend editing - if you want to do it right and play with it, you will spend days because they have so many powerful options to try and tweak. That was the biggest shocker for me. I find myself resorting to simplicity and speed of iMovie editing. Shoot the vid, run it through iMovie, let it do its thing, share to Apple TV and be done with it. It's simple, yet much faster to work with, if you don't care about making perfect movies. Kids and work leave me no choice, but to edit at night. FCE has become more of a chore than fun for me. If there is anything people underestimate while purchasing this is how dedicated they are to this hobby. Or not.
If you do editing for gigs, then it's a no brainer. iMovie is a toy compared to FCP.
FCPX yes or no? It's your choice, really.

  • Can't import videos into iMovie HD

    Hello,
I am attempting to edit some Halo videos for my friends. I captured the video on my PC and I am using my video iPod as a flash drive to get them onto my MacBook. I have exported the files into .wmv, mpeg-2, mpeg-4, and .avi. Every format except .wmv, when imported, is either a white screen or a black screen through the whole video. I have the flip4mac trial, but do not want to pay $30 just to get rid of a watermark. I don't know if I am doing something wrong, or what I should even do. Also, when I try to play mpeg-2/4, or .avi files off of my desktop it says that Quicktime cannot open the file.
What file type should I use in iMovie that will work, or what should I do?
And I am sure I have the latest version of iMovie.
    /Thanks

  • Can't import .mov into imovie

    Hi,
I got a problem with imovie '09 which is rather puzzling.. I would like to import a video from my digital videocamera (Sony DCR TRV 19E) (which has no USB 2.0 port) on my macbook (which has no firewire port). Since I cannot connect the two, I imported the video on windows xp through movie maker. Then I opened the resulting .wmv file in quicktime and I saved it as .mov. Then I tried to import it in imovie but the file cannot be selected (and therefore imported).
I tried to save the file for web with quicktime and then to import it in imovie. It does work but the video has the flip4mac logo impressed on it (unless I purchase the pro version of quicktime). I also tried to use MPEG streamclip and iConvertX 4.0, but the the resulting files have the flip4mac logo impressed. Does anybody know how to fix the problem?
    thanks very much
    Diego

apparently Lacie doesn't sell such a cable anymore... http://www.lacie.com/us/products/range.htm?id=10045 ... in any case, as far as I know, these cables do not allow the transfer of video from a camcorder to a computer...
The Macbook doesn't have any expansion card slot unfortunately...

  • Can't import video into IMovie 09 from Casio Exilim camera

I am new to mac and in the process of moving all my old files including many years of photos and video from my old pc life. The move has been painless up until I tried to finally make use of the old videos and create something in IMovie. I was really pumped up after watching the tutorial only to hit a brick wall when I realized that it would not be so easy after all.
So the problem is this: The video was shot with a Casio Exilim digital camera. The imported into IPhoto with my other pictures. When I click on the video in IPhoto, QuickTime opens and the video plays beautifully with full audio. The problem comes when I try to open that same video in IMovie 09. There is no video recognized. I have found from countless hours searching other threads that the .avi files needed to be converted. I have tried several and the only one I have had any luck with is MPEG Streamclip. I am able to convert the video, but there is no audio.
I am hoping for a simple solution.

In my continued search I have a solution to my problem and thought I would share it. If you search for a product called "Video Converter for Mac" it solves the problem. It will cost you $35, but that is much less expensive than a new camera.

  • HD Sony Video .m2ts.  Can I import them into iMovie for editing?

    Hi
I have all my video files stored on a hard disk.  I am thinking of buying a new MAC and want to know if iMovies can import .m2ts HD video for editing and playback?  I see from support section that its ok straight from the camera but what about my older videos located on the hard disk?
    Thanks!

You need to save to the camera roll of the iPad, not the Movies app.
So you will need to save the videos to the iPad via the Photos Tab.
If you can see the video in the photos app then iMovie can see them.
If you can see the videos in the movies app then iMovie cannot (Movies is for copyright movies so iMovie does not look there).
There are a few threadson here that have the same question as yours.
You can have a look at them.

  • Can't Import Video into iMovie 08/09

    Hey,
I recently got an HD Camcorder and I had been able to use it to import movies from it to iMovie 08. However the other day I was not able to anymore. Now I open iMovie 08, it recognizes the camcorder, I select what I want to import and then I click import.
Then it freezes, iMovie does nothing, doesn't import nada. I have waited 3 hours for a 45 second clip to import. So I decided I would go to Best Buy and I bought iLife 09 and I was hoping that would fix my problems.
I have the same issues in iLife 09.
If anyone could please provide a solution it would greatly appreciated.
    Thanks
    iGrant

  • Can't import movies into iMovie

Since upgrading to Lion, iMovie will no longer import my HD movies from my Canon Vixia HF M40.
    Very frustrating. Any ideas?

4-pin vs. 6-pin: Doesn't matter. Use whatever cable fits. Functionality is identical for both connections.
Composite video vs. S-video: If you camcorder has S-Video out, use it. S-video will give you better quality.
So iMovie recognizes the Pyro, but just doesn't capture? Did you start recording by pressing the record button? It won't start recording just because you start playing your tape. You need to tell iMovie to record by pressing the record button at the beginning, at the stop button when you are done.
It should work in principal - if you Google "iMovie Pyro" you immediatey get some hits with success stories.
