Can't Import / No Import Thumbnails

Hi, apologies if this has already been answered. I did quick search and couldn't find my answer.
Everything worked fine in LR 4, but upgrading to LR 5.3 and using Mavericks I have only been able to import photos once. After tinkering for a week and getting frustrated, I updated to LR 5.4 and still have the same issue. I've uninstalled/reinstalled with no sucess.
My setup is LR 5.4, using Mavericks and trying to import the images directly from my Lumix LX7 card (connected by USB).
The issues are:
- When I click on Import, thumbnails for the first dozen or so images populate. These are the same thumbnails that are initially visible in the window when I switch to the Import module. But then, when I scroll down all the other thumnails are blank. Not "Image Preview Not Available." Just grey squares with the filename. I have to click around on these squares and load various images to see where I want my import to begin.
- When I select a range of about 50 images/video files and hit import, it doesn't work. The screen switches to a grey screen that says "Importing Files" or something like that. But the progress bar in the upper-left corner doesn't move. No thumbnails come up in the Current Import window. Essentially nothing happens. After 20 mins I click the cancel button on the progress bar and it confirms no photos have been imported.
The images are set to be pulled from the LX7 card and saveed to an external drive, building Standard Previews and Smart Previews in the catalog using the import settings.
- Trying just to import five still images doesn't work either. Same issues.
This whole import dilema is further complicated because the LX7 card has about 500 images on it. When I did previous imports in LR 4, I would select to import only new images. However, with LR 5 it doesn't recognize the previous images I imported, despite them being in my Library with the same filename and my Import preference being to Ignore Duplicates. Instead, when I first installed LR 5 I was able to do one import, and had to weed out the duplicates from my library using a filter searching for "-2" in the filenames. Now, I can't even get LR 5 to import anything.
The only time I was ever sucessful importing images with LR 5, was the first time I used it. The thumbnails popped up in the Import window and I scrolled down as they populated, keeping pace wth my Macbook Pro building each row of thumbnail previews. Then, when I saw thumbnails for all the images on my LX7 card, I hit Import and it worked fine with the same Import settings. Subsequently, I can only see thumbnails for the first dozen images only and hitting Import just results in LR 5 stalling.
Does anyone have any advice on how I can get import working again?

I have had EXACTLY the same problem (On that note, I saw a new thing which might shed light on what the culprit is. I notice when I quit out of LR 5.4, that it doesn't close all the way. When I go to click on the LR icon in my dock, nothing happens. It turns out LR still "open," but marked "Not Responding" when I hit Apple+Opt+Esc. I have to force quit it before I can relaunch LR)
...and am now on my 7th day - including trips to Apple Genius Bar - trying to really fix (there were other issues).  ADOBE fix this, really! I will try removing movie files from import and see if it helps.  But this is a short term fix.  FWIW I have done everything outlined here: installed, reinstalled (using CC now), trashed and rebuilt catalogs... Nothing has worked.  (works for a bit then freezes, need Force Quit, etc.)  Mavericks 9.2, new Mac Pro (tower) 32 G RAM.
The only good news is to see it is known problem. This is clearly a Lightroom bug.
Thanks to everyone for posting.

  • Can Aperture Import Expression Media Thumbnails?

I need a cataloging program for my 38,000 images that are currently in Expression Media Pro. Shortly after buying iView I got an upgrade which basically wrecked my catalog. The only help I was able to get was from a discussion group and Expression has a charge of 250.00 for support!! I would buy a new program for that kind of money. My catalog is still somewhat crippled and I am looking for a way out, but the thought of rescanning hundreds of CD's and DVD's gives me a serious headache. Can Aperture import the thumbnails and perhaps the keyworks and some other info? Can any program? I feel like it is only a matter of time when Expression Media stops working without another upgrade and I'm not going there.

It seems that subject is getting little attention here so I took it elsewhere. Take a look as there may be a solution.

  • Upgraded to 10.6.8 and now can't import photos from Olympus camera

    1. Recently bought a new Olympus VR310 digital camera.  I couldn't get either Image Capture (6.0.1) or iPhoto (9.1.5) to import images from day one, onto my Mac Mini running Snow Leopard 10.6.8.  However, if I took the SDHC card out of the Olympus and put it into an older  Canon Ixus digital camera , and used that to upload, then both Image Capture and iPhoto worked perfectly.  So it's not the card.  Or the USB connection.  It's something special to the Olympus and the Mac.  Obviously I tried all the usual stuff about dumping plist files etc.  Nothing worked.
    2. The problem manifests itself, when the Olympus is connected,  as Image Capture being unable to show more than one, if any, thumbnails, and it is unable to import at all.  In iPhoto the problem manifests immediately it calls up the Olympus as a connected camera.  The dreaded spinning beachball of death kicks off, and the program 'stops responding'.  Even after I quit iPhoto and unmount the Olympus, iPhoto will not open without the spinning ball of death until I restart.
    3. Anyway, I tried connecting the Olympus to my son's Macbook, (System 10.6.7, Image Capture 6.0.1 and iPhoto 9.1.1) and all worked perfectly.  Hmm… so it's NOT just down to the Olympus.  It's something to do with my setup.
    4. I also have a bootable USB drive connected to the Mini, so I booted into that, so I then have my computer and my user preferences etc running under the bootable drives System 10.6.6, Image Capture 6.0.1, and iPhoto 9.1.5.  That worked perfectly with the Olympus too.  So it's not my the combination of my user settings, Image Capture 6.0.1, or iPhoto 9.15, or the  Olympus.
    5. My guess then was it was some corruption of the system on the Mac Mini.  So I reinstalled the Mac Mini system, from the install DVD, so I had a nice fresh Snow Leopard 10.6.0.  That gave me Image Capture 6.0.1 and iPhoto 9.1.5.  When I attached the Olympus, everything worked perfectly.  Great.
THEN, I updated the system from Apple's Oftware Update, all the way to 10.6.8, which is where I started from.
    6. And guess what.  Nothing works anymore. Immediately before the update, the Olympus importing worked.  Immediately afterwards it didn't.  I'm back where I was at the beginning, with exactly the same problem..  I can't import from the Olympus but the Canon is fine. (see 1 and 2 above)
So, it seems to me that the Upgrade straight to 10.6.8 is what caused the problem.  And given I could get the Olympus to work on my son's computer (system 10.6.6) it's something between 10.6.6 and 10.6.8.  Why the Canon works on all the permutations, and not the Olympus, I don't know.  I don't know why the  Olympus ONLY doesn't work with 10.6.8.
    7. Obviously there are tedious workarounds (but none that lets iPhoto capture the photos directly) which I can use to get the images into iPhoto eventually, but hey, this is an Apple Mac, who wants to be doing tedious workarounds all the time.
I've had Macs since 1984  (I'm that old…) so I'm a fan, and I'm reasonably competent, but this has me stumped.
    Any ideas, anyone.
    Any help much appreciated.

  • I have many of those lost photos on my iPod.  How can I import those to my MacBook Pro without the iTunes synchronization kicking in and removing them?

I lost rather a lot of photos on a corrupted external storage device.  I have many of those photos on my iPod.  How can I import those
photos into my MacBook Pro without the iTunes synchronization function kicking in and effectively deleting those photos I want to
import from that iPod?  Any assistance would be greatly appreciated as those photos now only reside on that iPod...

The photos you synced to your iPod through iTunes are no longer in their full resolution, but instead are scaled down thumbnails of those photos.  So if you do manage to get them off your iPod, they will be quite small in size compared to the original ones you lost.
In order to get them off of your iPod, you'll need the help of some sort of 3rd party software. Here is one option.

  • How can I import to an external HD?

In previous versions of iMovie, I could easily import a video to an iMovie event of my choice located on any connected hard drive. This is important because I make a lot of movies and keeping on my internal HD is impossible.
iMovie 10.0.2 does not seem to want me to store movies anywhere but the internal HD. I have searched high and low for a solution but have not found one. This makes imovie useless for me. and makes several TB of movie files inaccessible to imovie. I made the mistake of trying to upgrade old imovie files to the iMovie 10, a process which could not be completed because it quickly wiped all my internal HD space and would not use the external drives.
Has imovie development been outsources to retired MS Windows developers? Will I soon need to click START in order to switch things off?

In iMovie '11, I could create an event on any hard drive when I imported the movie. It was part of that step.
Now I have to cancel import, go to the menu, select File, select open Library, select New, select the appropriate Hard Drive, select New Folder, name the folder, create a name for the Library that is descriptive yet short enough to fit in the smaller iMovie10(sic) menu, click save.  Now I can click Import. None of those steps are intuitive. It is like those casio watches we had in the 1980's that had 40 functions but only 3 buttons to navigate the menu.
But that is just the start of my problems. Now I am required to associate the project with a particular event on the same drive as the project. This makes iMovie less of a project editor and more a single-event editor. Now, in order to work effectively within a project, I have to import all of the events that I want to use with the project, and I have no thumbnails to help me do that. In iMovie '11, I had my blank independent project in one field. In the other field I had all the events from all hard drives in the another. I could easily scan the events and import the appropriate clips into the project. But now I have to import all the clips in full without being able to see the thumbs. The only way to get iMovie 10(sic) to work as well as iMovie '11 is to import every clip into the same library as the project, or import every event into the same project.
This so-called library structure is far less intuitive, and far less practical than the previous version. And I swear to you that I a really trying hard to give it a chance.

  • I can not import photos into lightroom 4.4  Had no problem before this time.

I can not import photos into lightroom 4.4  Had no problem before this time.  I have camera raw7.4 and use a NikonD7100.  I have a Mac using 10.6.8.  I can see the images and selected for import in Lightroom, but after I check "import" I get a message that Lightroom could not read the files.  This happens with both raw and jpeg files.  Thanks for a repl

thanks for the reply. would you please tell me how to check for the folder to have write permission.  I have done the same settings as before but this time does not transfer.  It says can not read files with a code "298".  I can see the thumbnails on the screen prior to trying to import the photos, also can see them with the card in the camera and using the view mode.  I have up to date camera raw 7.4 for my Nikon D7100 and the settings allow for 7.1 and above

  • I can not import in Lightroom 4.4 any RAW-file from my D600. Lightroom gives no picture.

I can not import in Lightroom 4.4 any RAW-file from my D600.  Lightroom gives no picture.

    How long have you waited?
When I connect my D600 via USB and import in Lr it takes a long time before the image thumbnails are displayed in the Import Dialog.
I know that using a card reader would probably be much faster (you gotta try that!).
In the meantime I just do something else for 5-7 min (read e-mail, get a cup of coffee) and thereafter the thumbnails are displayed and import is straightforward.
And I do have a powerful and fast system.
So, somehow Lr and the D600 are slow to begin "talking" to each other.

  • IPhoto can't import from CF card

    Hi,
today when trying to import some photos from my kids rugby game, iPhoto can't import several of them. In total there are 51 photos on the newly formatted CF card and 5 of them doesn't even have a thumbnail picture, and even more of them can get imported to iPhoto. I get a kind of nonsense error message telling me that iPhoto can't import a picture because it can't get recieved or something similar. If I use Image Capture I get 38 of them imported.
I really want to save these photos, what can I do?
And what has happened, is it the memory card that is bad? I sure must prevent this from occuring again in the future.
    Thanks...
    /Mans

Are you importing via a card reader or are you plugging the camera directly into the computer?
My suggestion is if you are using a card reader, you may want to go through the camera instead if you can to see if the camera is better able to hand off the photos to the Mac.
But it sounds more like a card issue if you have problems outside of iPhoto like when trying to use Image Capture.

  • Can't Importing iPhoto '11 (version 9) into Aperture 3

I have Aperture 3 and iPhoto '09. My father recently upgraded to iPhoto '11.
I've successfully imported iPhoto '09 libraries in the past. But now my father has iPhoto '11 and gave me a small iPhoto library to import into my Aperture 3 collection (2 events, 109 pictures). I tried importing it using Import -> iPhoto Library...
It looks to be importing the events (just 2), but them moves the events into the Trash and responds that it can't import the pictures. The trash contains the events and the thumbnails, but no reference to the master file. I get a dialog that says:
"Import Items Completed with Errors, 0 items have been imported" then lists all 109 pictures and their file location in the original iPhoto library.
I've tried using iPhoto Library Manager to convert it down to iPhoto 8 and import, but it still doesn't work. Using that path, I can open the converted library in iPhoto '09 and use the iPhoto library browser in Aperture I can copy the events. But I loose all the face recognition, and albums that he built.
I'm using Aperture 3.1.1 on an Intel MacBook running 10.6.5.
    Any suggestions?

Can't sort by date in the Library pane but if you click the Projects icon (in the Library pane), the resulting project icons in the viewer can be sorted by date.

  • IPhoto can't import when card contains movies

    Hi all,
I have been suffering from a weird problem for a while: once in a while iPhoto refused to import images from an SD card and hung with the color wheel spinning until the next reboot. If interested, the original thread is here:
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3308591?tstart=0
I was never really able to track down the cause of this, it disappeared when the card was reformatted in the camera. Since it happened again today, I did some systematic investigations. It turned out that not only iPhoto, but also Image Capture is affected: As soon as an SD card plugged into the Mac contains a movie, things get messed up. In iPhoto, all I get is the spinning wheel.  In Image Capture, all images taken BEFORE the movie are shown as thumbnail pictures, but the movie and later images are not. Even if the card is ejected in Finder, Image Capture still shows it, but it shows no images. This continues even when the card is plugged in again and/or Image Capture is shut down and restarted. It remains until the Mac is rebooted.
If the card contains no movies, everything is fine. All this happens regardless from what card reader I am using (I tried two different ones) and what camera the files on the card were taken with (I tried a Casio Z-1000 recording AVI movies and a Panasonic FT-3 recording MOVs). The issue also appears regardless from the size of the movie file (I took a very short one, even smaller than a usual image file).
It only happens on my wife's Mac (2006 MacBook Pro CD 1.83 GHz, latest Snow Leopard, latest iPhoto). The problem does NOT appear at all on my 2008 MacBook (C2D 2.4 GHz, same software).
I can still import into iPhoto when simply copying the files to hard disk and importing from there. In contrast to what I described in the thread linked above, iPhoto now recognizes already imported images.
Any hints how to solve this are really appreciated!
    All the best,
    Thomas.
EDIT: This reads just like this one:
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/15860473#15860473
so at least I'm not alone with this problem.

    Phil:
Movies rotated with Quicktime Pro import into iPhoto OK. I downloaded and tried TransformMovie and it wouldn't import. It had been changed to a .mov file. There were some differences in the video portion as indicated by QT Player, mostly in video offset. But changing it to what the QT version was didn't help. When I did a Save As in QT Player the resulting file was importable. QT Pro is worth the money and more. You can do a lot of things with it.
EURIKA! Just change the file's extension back to .avi and it will import.
    Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • Sounds weird... but can I import a folder without actually importing?

So I've been used to using Picasa on my PC but recently bought a MacBook Pro and wanted to start using iPhoto. When I selected to import one of the directories of family photos the size of my iPhoto library quickly jumped to over 40gb (about 10,000 photos). When I would import using Picasa it would create a preview of each image that it would store in it's library, but otherwise it would only add exif data to the library and so my picasa library with over 30k photos is only about 2gb.
My question therefore is, can I import photos without actually having iPhoto add the raw data of the photo to it's library. My family photos are stored on a server in my office, that is RAIDed and backed up to offsite storage daily. The last thing I want to do is have another copy sitting on my Mac.
    Many thanks in advance,
    Warwick

Yes, but I don't recommend it.
    *How to do it:*
Simply go to iPhoto Menu -> Preferences -> Advanced and uncheck 'Copy Files to the iPhoto Library on Import'.
    *What Happens:*
Now iPhoto will not copy the files, but rather simply reference them on your HD. To do this it will create an alias in the Originals Folder that points to your file. It will still create a thumbnail and, if you modify the pics, a Modified version within the iPhoto Library Folder.
    *Some things to consider:*
    1. Importing and deleting pics are more complex procedures. You have to to put the files where they will be stored before importing them. When you delete them you'll need to remove the files from the HD yourself.
    2. You cannot move or rename the files on your system or iPhoto will lose track of them on systems prior to 10.5 and iPhoto 08. Even with the later versions issues can still arise if you move the referenced files to new volumes or between volumes.
    3. Most importantly, migrating to a new disk or computer can be much more complex.
    4. Because iPhoto has no tools for managing Referenced Files, if, for some reason, the path to the photos changes then you could find yourself resolving aliases for +each photo in the Library+ one by one.
    My own opinion:
I've yet to see a good reason to run iPhoto in referenced mode unless you're using two photo organiser
If disk space is an issue, you can run an entire iPhoto Library from an external disk formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled) :
    1. Quit iPhoto
    2. Copy the iPhoto Library as an entity from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
    3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
    4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.
If you're concerned about accessing the files, There are many, many ways to access your files in iPhoto:
*For Users of 10.5 and later*
You can use any Open / Attach / Browse dialogue. On the left there's a Media heading, your pics can be accessed there. Command-Click for selecting multiple pics.
    Uploaded with plasq's Skitch!
You can access the Library from the New Message Window in Mail:
    Uploaded with plasq's Skitch!
*For users of 10.4 and later* ...
Many internet sites such as Flickr and SmugMug have plug-ins for accessing the iPhoto Library. If the site you want to use doesn’t then some, one or any of these will also work:
To upload to a site that does not have an iPhoto Export Plug-in the recommended way is to Select the Pic in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export and export the pic to the desktop, then upload from there. After the upload you can trash the pic on the desktop. It's only a copy and your original is safe in iPhoto.
This is also true for emailing with Web-based services. However, if you're using Gmail you can use iPhoto2GMail
If you use Apple's Mail, Entourage, AOL or Eudora you can email from within iPhoto.
If you use a Cocoa-based Browser such as Safari, you can drag the pics from the iPhoto Window to the Attach window in the browser.
*If you want to access the files with iPhoto not running*:
For users of 10.6 and later:
You can download a free Services component from MacOSXAutomation which will give you access to the iPhoto Library from your Services Menu. Using the Services Preference Pane you can even create a keyboard shortcut for it.
For Users of 10.4 and later:
Create a Media Browser using Automator (takes about 10 seconds) or use this free utility Karelia iMedia Browser
    Other options include:
    1. *Drag and Drop*: Drag a photo from the iPhoto Window to the desktop, there iPhoto will make a full-sized copy of the pic.
    2. *File -> Export*: Select the files in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. The dialogue will give you various options, including altering the format, naming the files and changing the size. Again, producing a copy.
    3. *Show File*: Right- (or Control-) Click on a pic and in the resulting dialogue choose 'Show File'. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.

  • I can't import images, I just get a dashed frame.

I have been using iPhoto since version 1.0 and have very rarely ran into trouble. But all of the sudden I can't import pictures anylonger!
During import I can see the pictures as previews... but as soon as it is done importing I only see a dashed line as a frame. Everytime I open iPhoto it tells me that I have "x photos in my library that aren't imported." And it asks me if I want to import... When I say yes, iPhoto imports them again (as before, with preview) and makes a new album called "rescued images", but they are still empty/dashed frames.
Every now and then when I open iPhoto, it also asks me to update the thumbnails, when I click yes it is busy for a while but the problem remains.
I cant edit them, neither in iPhoto or extrenal editor. I can't show original or show file. I can't make emails out of the imported images.
The rest of the Library works fine... but nothing new can be imported. Niether draging or importing through camera works. Current version that I am using is 6.0.3.
    Please help me!
    Thank you.

  • Can't Import Directly from Card Reader or Camera anymore

I am using aperture 2.x and all of a sudden I can't import directly from my G9, 30D or San Disk card reader anymore. I have to copy files locally first to make this work.
This is what happens: I can see and select the thumbnails off the card just fine but when I select all and import it immediately says "0 files imported".
    Any ideas?

  • Can't import Photos!  Exclamation point only...

First off, I've already rebuilt the database.
Suddenly, when i try to import from SD or iPhone, the preview thumbnail is imported and shows up in events, but the MAIN PHOTO IS NOT IMPORTED! ONly the thumbnail is there.
I've looked in the iPhoto folders too and I can see the imported thumbnail but there is no full rez file to accompany it. So when I click on the thumbnail, I get the dreaded exclamation point!
Please, if anyone has any idea of what's going on or how to solve, let me know. I can see there are MANY other users having this problem after reading the boards. I've yet run across the solution though.
Once again, this suddenly started and all imports only bring over a thumbnail and not the full rez photo itself.
This is a shared family library (and has been for years), that resides in the shared folder.

    TD,
I'm running a managed library. The library is in the shared folder so it is accessible by each account on the imac. We're using the internal drive of the imac.
No preferences have been changed and I check it just now too.
This problem has just started mysteriously and is only a problem on NEW imports. The image data is not being transferred, only the thumbnail. When I go into the iphoto library manually, I can see the small thumbnail image but there is no full rez image to go with it in the library at all.
I've tried a spotlight search and there is just no full rez info being imported.
    Any advice would be appreciated.

  • Can't Import my Movies from my TRV520 Sony Camcorder

    Hello,
I recently installed iMovie '08 to my iMac G5 and was trying to import some movies I have in Hi8 cassettes using my TRV520 Sony Camcorder. I have no problem controlling the camera from iMovie '08 (like rewinding, forwarding and stopping), but when I hate play in iMovie the movies plays in camcorder screen but not in iMovie screen instead I just see a blue screen. Same thing happens when I try to import the movie, I only see the blue screen and nothing imports. I went back to my iMovie '06 (the earlier version) I was able to see the movie and import. I tried this also in my MacBook pro and the result was the same can't import movie in iMovie '08.
Is this mean that iMovie '08 does not support my camera? Does anyone else have this problem? Is there a way for me to make my camcorder work in iMovie '08? What should I do?
    I really appreciate your suggestions.
    Thanks,
    Omar

When I connect the camera to the computer it does not automatically open iMovie.
Was actually asking if plugging in the camera, turning it on (in the VTR mode for tape capture), and then opening iMovie '08 automatically recognized the camcorder and opened the "camera import" window. Some have reported this workflow was more successful in ensuring the camcorder was properly recognized.
When iMovie was open I clicked on the import import button.
Did this workflow get the iMovie '08 "camera import" window to recognized the camcorder "by name?"
I could not open or play movie in my computer but when I use the controls in iMovie it plays and stops movie in my camera.
Are you using the "Automatic" or the "Manual" setting? (I prefer "Manual" since I don't import every clip/file for editing.) In this mode, you use the "controls" in the "camera import" window to rewind/fast forward and start/stop playback of the tape in the import preview window. When you want to "capture" something, you just press the "import" button to begin capture and and the "stop" button to stop capturing a segment/clip. As soon as you stop, the captured clip/segment should be save and the thumbnails created. You then repeat this procedure until you have "captured" all of the files you want. Have never used it, but believe/assume the "Automatic" mode should automatically rewind your entire tape, place it in the play mode, and proceed to capture all clips contained on the tape. In any case, I had no problem capturing using the set up and manual workflow with my TRV520.
