Can't import Photoshop photos

A handy hint for Photoshop users (or just dummies like myself). iPhoto refuses to recognise any Photoshop files, including standard jpegs, unless the file extension (.jpg, .psd, etc) is added to the file name after saving in Photoshop. If this is documented somewhere in the iPhoto literature, I could not find it.
As a long time Mac user, I found this quirk particularly frustrating to solve as Macs historically don't require a visible .extension in their file name.
Just select the 'append file extension' in the 'File Handling' preferences pane in Photoshop to satisfy iPhoto's ignorance and allow the import. Make sure you save your Photoshop images to somewhere else and NOT the iPhotos folder, before adding the file to iPhoto.

You can't do it that way. The iphoto library is for iphoto's own use, and poking at from outside iphoto is the fastest way to corrupt it and lose all your photos. You have two choices:
1. Set PSE as your external editor for iphoto and open all images from iphoto, not by using File>Open.
2. Export the photos from iphoto, open the copies and save them, then reimport the edited photos as new files.
