Can't import raw files; not seen by Lightroom

I have a Canon Eos 20d, Lightroom 2.3, and Windows XP. I just shot raw files for the first time and tried to import them into Lightroom. All of my jpeg photos on the memory card could be imported, but none of the raw files appeared to be even "seen" by the program. Any suggestions?

>Is there no way to do it from the camera directly?
I don't know about this camera but many Canons allow you to change the communication mode on the USB bus. For your computer to recognize the camera without special proprietary software, you need to set it to PC connection instead of PTP. This is usually in the setup section. In this mode, also called mass storage mode by other manufacturers, any software and any computer can communicate with your camera and it will just be seen as a (very slow) card reader. If you keep it in PTP mode, the computer can only see the jpegs. Very annoying indeed. It is very possible that your camera doesn't have the mass storage mode and then you might have to use Canon's software to load the RAW images from your camera or get a $10 card reader. A card reader should always work.

  • I can't import raw files into lightroom

I have been using lightroom 4. I shoot with a nikon d300s. I recently used a nikon D610 and now it says preview not available. It also says the the raw images aren't able to import. So I recently upgraded to Lightroom 5 and it still says preview not available. I need some suggestions on how to import them.

I don't use nikon software.  I just use lightroom. I just got lightroom 5. I tried to update to 5.3 but couldn't find the location where to find it.

Do you have Lightroom 5.3 or higher?
Did you use Nikon software at any point on these photos?

  • How can I import Raw files from a canon eos 6d?

How can I import RAW files from a Canon Eos 6D into aperture?

Doesn;t look like the 6d is supported yet. I'm surprised, thought it would have  been in the latest update, 4.02.
In the meantime you can shot RAW+JPG and use the JPG's now and then switch to the RAW's once it is supported or else you an convert the RAWs to DNG using Adobe's converter and import the DNGs.
While I can't say for sure  Canon cameras are usually supported fairly quickly so hopefully you won't have to much longer to wait.
    regards
And in the meantime let Apple now you want this see Aperture->Provide Aperture Feedback

  • Can't import RAW files into iPhoto 6 Library from Nikon D700

For whatever reason I am unable to import RAW files from my Nikon D700 into my iPhoto 6 (version 6.0.6) Library. I can import JPEGs from the D700, but it's no-go with the RAW files. When I attempt to import the RAW files I get the following message:
    "Unreadable Files
The following files could not be imported (they may be an unrecognized file type or the files may not contain valid data)."
Can anybody solve this mystery for me?

I presume that the economically-priced Mac Box Set containing OS X 10.5.6 Leopard, iLife '09, and iWork '09 would be the way to go. Do you concur?
Well that's the cheapest way to do it. You could, of course, buy a new Mac
Do you feel that my 20" Intel iMac--details listed below--would have any problems handling the upgraded programs?
It will have no problems with the updated OS or applications.
'm uneasy at the thought of upgrading my operating system, but I presume that chances of running into problems are much less than if I were upgrading a Windows OS. In case a problem arises my entire hard drive is backed up with a 1T external hard drive using SuperDuper software, but I prefer not to encounter a situation requiring me to use it for restoration purposes.
The key to any update or upgrade is to make sure that you have a good working back up. That way, should anything go wrong, you have a quick way back to where you started.
My tips for upgrading the OS? Disconnect the disk with the back up and all other peripherals when you do the Upgrade. Pop the disk in. Do a standard Upgrade. (There are some folks who swear that you should wipe your HD and start over from scratch before you do, but, frankly, that's overkill. I've been upgrading Macs since 1992 and never had a problem.

  • Can't import RAW files from Canon Powershot S50.

iPhoto6 will not import RAW files from my Canon Powershot S50. It says the files are "unreadable". Image capture will import to the desktop, but neither iPhoto nor Photoshop Elements can open the file. I checked and the S50 is supposed to be compatible with OSX and RAW files.

I agree but I was responding to someone with an S50. That's hardly an "advanced amateur" camera. iPhoto has some rather neat catalog features but the editing is purely for the snapshooter. Heck, I suspect that redeye removal is the most popular feature and, as far as I'm concerned, if you have redeye to begin with, you're a snapshooter.
I'm an extremely advanced amateur with my film setup but, because of cost, I'm still a snapshooter with my digital camera. My film setup is two Nikon N80s with a top-of-the-line Nikon flash head that I use only with a Stroboframe bracket. The bracket and the necessary extension cord cost me nearly $200! My lenses are pure Nikon, including a single focal length f/1.8, 85 mm. portrait lens.
I consider 10 MP to be the bare minimum for "advanced amateur" shooting and both Canon and Nikon have recently introduced 10MP SLRs in the $1000 range. However, I'm waiting for the next advance - an SLR without the reflex mechanism - interchangeable lenses and an FP shutter but no mirror! Let's face it, the reflex mechanism adds cost but a digital screen gives the same view and even better (you can see the color balance) and screens are now available that can be viewed in bright sunlight.
I'm also hoping for one thing that will probably never happen - physically larger CCDs so that I can get the same focus control (small depth of field) that I can get with my film camera.

  • New Computer - Can't import raw files from Canon 1D mk 4

I just bought a new Toshiba Qosmio laptop and have reinstalled PS CS5 and LR 3.2 64 bit.  LR says there are no other updates to install.  Trying to import raw files from CF reader but LR is not showing me the raw files on the import screen.  I have installed Camera Raw 6.2 plug in.  It's been a long night but I can't see why files aren't importing properly.  What am I missing?  All suggestions greatly appreciated.
    Thanks
    Mark

    Mark,
The ACR plugin is not needed for importing files with Lightroom. LR has it's own "ACR" built in. The ACR plugin is used when opening Raw files from Photoshop.
Try copying the files from your card-reader to your hard drive using explorer/finder, and try importing from there. There have been quite a few reports where the card reader (and its connection) have lead to trouble while importing into LR.

  • I can't import RAW files in LR4.4?

    Hi, i'm using LR4 updated to the latest version LR4.4, I tried to import my RAW pictures from my NIKON D3300 (.NEF) but I can't. it says the following;
'The files are not recognized by the raw format support in lightroom'. What does that mean? and how do I import those RAW files in LR4?
I can see the images preview, can't open them and can't import them. Help please?!

First, you don't have the latest version, and you need at least Lightroom 5.4 to open these photos.
If you don't want to upgrade (which costs money) to Lightroom 5.4, you can download the FREE Adobe DNG Converter (version 8.4 or later) and then use that software to convert your RAWs to DNG, and then import them into Lightroom 4.4.

  • How can I import raw files from nikon d810 to elements 12

How ca raw files be imported into elements from a nikon d810

If the images are in iPhoto for iOS use the Share to iTunes feature. Then connect your iPad to the computer you normally sync with, open iTunes, select your iPad in the left column of iTunes and in the right column select General. Ten scroll down to find the File Sharing area and select iPhoto. You will see a pane where your photos are listed and you can copy them to your computer. I'm not completely sure the copies will be RAW files but at least you have saved a version of the photos.
I use my iPad to review, display and post photos but I use my computer to actually process RAW files. While I often connect my camera to my iPad to transfer photos I never delete them from the card and ill eventually copy them to more than one hard drive.

  • Can't import RAW Files via usb

I bought a canon eos 5D a couple of days ago. I don't know why but I can't import the raw files from the usb connection. When I press the eos 5D button from the import dialogue, the lightroom says "no files were found to import". Everything works perfect with an external reader but I do want to import them via usb. I don't want to be removing the card too often.
Can anybody help me or guide me to a possible solution?. Zoombrowser works fine and imports without problem. I love lightroom and don't understand why I can't import via usb. It's strange but it doesn't happen with jpg files. With those, I got no problem.
    thanks in advance

  • How can i import raw files into iphoto from my Nikon D300?

Just got a Nikon D300, and it will import jpg and tff, but not raw (nef) files-i prefer iphoto to their software- Nikon says to try talking to apple to find a way to do it- does anyone know any info that can help? I need to decide if I am keeping the camera-from other posts it doesn't look like buying aperture will help either- thanks.

I would not ditch a camera because of this! If you like the camera, there will always be a way to import Canikon RAW files, though you may need to do some upgrading, and it may take some time for Apple to support a new camera.

  • Can't import RAW files from a Canon EOS 450D

Hi there, I have a number of photos that I have taken in RAW & JPeg.  The Jpeg are importing fine into Aperture, but the RAW files are just coming in as completely black images.  Is there an option I need to select to get these in properly.  Thanks in advance

Have you tried Digital Photo Professional?  I found with my XS (1000D) that the RAWS from RAW+JPEG simply do not work, even in DPP.  The solution was to use RAW only.

  • HT5182 How can I import RAW files from my iPad to my MAC computer?

iPhoto doesn't recognize RAW files on my ipad and unfortunately, I've deleted the images from the SD card in my camera. I'm concerned that I've lost access to these images for processing. Any advice?

  • IPhoto 09 can't import RAW file (.CR2) from Canon G10 Camera

Every time I try to import a RAW image on my G10 camera (the file extension is .CR2) into iPhoto, the program says that the file is in an unrecognized format. Yet the OS and I believe iPhoto supports RAW from the Canon G10. I have updated my software. Does anyone know why I cannot import this file?

Since the G10 support came with the 10.5.7 update download and reapply 10.5.7 COMBO Update again followed by a repair of disk permissions. See if that will jump start the import.

I am an amateur photographer. I just purchased a brand new NIKON D3300 took a few pictures, signed up for the Adobe annual Photographers Creative Cloud annual program and my first task to have Lightroom import a few test photos fails and I have no clue why my raw + jpgs can't be imported. at the outset In Lightroom I also got a "Preview unavailable for this file" message for every image file when I pointed to the memory card I had connected to my computer:

    NIKON D3300
The Nikon D3300 Raw format is not yet supported in Lightroom 5 (currently 5.3).
    http://helpx.adobe.com/creative-suite/kb/camera-raw-plug-supported-cameras.html
Raw file formats are proprietary to each camera manufacturer and specific to each camera model. Adobe's Camera Raw engine (used by both Adobe Camera Raw - as a plugin to Photoshop - and Lightroom) must be constantly updated with every new camera make and model which arrives on the market in order to read and edit Raw files from that camera.
Adobe has added support for the D3300 to Camera Raw 8.4 which is about to be released. It is a Release Candidate (RC status) at the moment. So D3300 Raw support will probably be added to the next soon-to-be-released Lightroom update (5.4).
    http://labs.adobe.com/technologies/cameraraw8-4-cc/?tabID=details#tabTop
In the meantime, you can download the free Adobe DNG Converter 8.4
    http://labs.adobe.com/downloads/cameraraw8-4.html
Using the DNG converter, you can then convert the D3300 Raw files to DNGs then open and edit the DNGs in Lightroom 5.3.
Once Lightroom 5.4 is released (assuming it also has D3300 support) the DNG conversion will no longer be required.
