Can't import video from canon mini dvd camcorder to imovie

I'm having problems importing my videos into imovie. i have a canon mini dvd camcorder. The camera only has a usb cord to move the videos. When i connect camcorder to computer idvd opens up and i can watch videos, but i can't import to imovie. This has been very frustrating. Can anyone help me with this problem. Hopefully i won't have to buy a new camcorder.

Hi f
Very good advices from Sue ! (Hi Sue !)
Karsten has collected it like this:
Hi
A. don't put a mini DVD into Your iMac. You need a trayloaded DVD to do this.
B. Read what Karsten collected:

.. and here the complete 'full 9 yards' ... :

DVDs are in a socalled delivery format (mpeg2), which isn't meant and
made for any processing as editing... or, as honorable forum member
QuicktimeKirk stated: I use the analogy of the old Polaroid
"instant" cameras. Push the button, wait for the print to develop and
show it off. ..
for using the iLife apps, you have to convert'em first, in
recommended order, choose one of the following tools/workarounds:
• DVDxDV (free trial, 25$, Pro: 90$)
• Apple mpeg2 plugin (19$) + Streamclip (free)
• VisualHub (23.32$)
• Cinematize >60$
• Mpeg2Works >25$ + Apple plug-in
• Toast 6/7/8 allows converting to dv/insert dvd, hit apple-k
• connect a miniDV Camcorder with analogue input to a DVD-player and transfer disk to tape/use as converter
• Drop2DV (free) a free tool claiming to convert DVDs into dv-stream...
• Use iSquint for your conversions : www.iSquint.org

  • Import Video from Canon DC330 DVD Camcorder to Final Cut Express

Does anyone know how this can be done? And how to do it.
    Thanks,
    Peter

Your camcorder records to miniDVD disks. There are three possible ways to import it to FCE.
1 - if you have a Mac with a tray-loading DVD drive, you can use MPEG Streamclip to convert the DVD video to QuickTime in order to import it into FCE. The DVD disk must be finalized in your camcorder first. And you cannot put a miniDVD disk in a slot-loading drive such as on the MacBook, MacBookPro, iMac - don't try it, the disk will get irretrievably stuck in the drive.
2 - the camera has a USB port and if it's possible to connect & copy the contents of a DVD that is in the camera to your Mac's hard drive, you can also use MPEG Streamclip to convert the video for use in FCE.
MPEG Streamclip is a free utility. You will also need the QuickTime MPEG2 Playback Component if you do not already have it on your Mac. You can download it from the Apple Online Store ($19.99)
3 - The only other alternative is to connect the composite video & audio outputs of your camcorder to an analog-digital converter (like the Canopus ADVC-110 ) so you can capture the video in FCE while it plays back in your camcorder. In this case you do not need MPEG Streamclip or the Quicktime MPEG2 playback component.

  • Importing video from a JVC HD7U camcorder into iMovie 11

I am having trouble importing video from a JVC HD7U camcorder into iMovie 11.  The import screen shows up and recognizes the camera with the time counter activating but there is no image on the screen and the record or import buttons do not seem to do anything.  I have followed the instructions from the manual and others found online.  Someone please help.  Terry

    Hi Brady,
I have a new Everio HD that I have been fooling with all day. Finally got a clip into iMovie 6 ....but only once and I'm still figuring this out too.....if you are not using a HD camera this may or may not work for you.
The Everio Quicktime extension must be installed. (Download and install the patch if you upgrade to Leopard).
Is your camera an HD? If so you need to capture the clip in 1440 CDR not FHD (FullHighDef).
Launch iMovie 6. Create a new movie in Video format HDV 1080i . then plug in your camera via firewire.
Put the camera in playback mode (Play/REC), press the Function, select Dubbing Playback (bottom of the menu). You should get a menu with a start button now. Switch to iMovie 6 and select "Import". This should start the clip playing from the camera....you may have to hit the Start on the camera.
This should get your clips into i Movie.
We may be ably to create playlists and get them in that way too but I have not had any luck with the JVC instructions to do this. There are video tutorials on the JVC website too but again they have not worked for me.
There is also a way to get and work the FHD files but that is a USB file transfer followed by a file conversion. I'll tackle that a little later...
    Good luck,
    Roger

  • Can't import video from Canon ZR50

    Hi,
I'm having (a LOT) of trouble importing video from my DV camcorder (a Canon ZR50) into iMovie. I used to do this all the time (using this camcorder) with no problems whatsoever, but I haven't imported any video for a couple of years.
First, I got the error message that the camcorder was sending "half-frames" that iMovie couldn't accept and to change the recording speed to SP.
I changed the recording speed to SP, but still got the same error message. So, I then uplugged everything, restarted the computer, took the battery and the emergency battery out of the camcorder, waited five minutes, replaced the batteries, reset the date/time/recording speed (to SP), plugged the firewire back in, and got the same error message.
I then decided to go boot up my ancient blue dalmation iMac that I used to edit video on, and although iMovie said the camcorder was connected, when I hit either "play" or "import," even though the video would play on the camcorder, it wouldn't show up in iMovie.
PLEASE help me get my video onto the computer!!!
    Thanks so much,
    Sierra

  • I can not edit video from my new DVD Camcorder...

I recently purchased a Canon DC210 in hopes of learning to edit the movies I make with it before taking my honeymoon to Alaska in May, but I am not able to import the video from the disks.  Is iDVD capable of doing what I am wanting to do i.e.. import, arrange, and edit scenes from the mini DVDs?

Unless I am missing something the list actually skips over my Model Number (Canon DC210)? I am still not seeing anything that tells me that '08 is going to solve any of my problems. I currently have iDVD 6.0.4 and it doesn't seem to have the capabilities I need. I don't think I am going to invest in another piece of software if I am not able to find something that specifically says it will work with my camera or media type.
Can you point me some where that does actually say it will?

  • Camera connect, can't import video from canon video camera

Having got over the disappointment of not being able to use a 3G data plan abroad for the iPad I comforted myself with the thought that I could enjoy watching movies taken on holiday on my brand new canon legria fs307 camcorder which I bought new along with the apple camera connect kit at the airport from Dixons.
It imports the stills fine by both card and USB but does nothing and does not recognise any of the video!
In fact connect it by USB it tells me the card may be damaged! Which it obviously isn't because it imports the stills.
    Any ideas?

  • Can I import video from an unprotected dvd?

I have videos of concerts for the group I sign with, and I wanted to download them into Idvd to make some editing. Is that possible?

how can I do it with a mac?
Simply copy the non-zero VOB title set you want to edit to your hard drive and then convert them to an iMovie '08 "edit" compatible compression format.
    do I need additional software?
You will if you don't already have an MPEG-based, third-party converter. A converter like iSquint is free and easy to use but limits you MPEG-4/AAC or H.264/AAC. At the other end of the scale is MPEG Streamclip which is also free but requires you purchase the QT MPEG-2 Playback component ($20) to allow you to covert to any iMovie '08 "edit" compatible compression format. In between are applications like FFmpegX (donation-ware), Visual Hub (pay-ware), MPEG2 Works (pay-ware), etc.

  • Can you import video from a DVD?  If so how

Can you import video from a DVD? I have some home DVD's made on my PC. My PC program (Roxio) allowed me to pull clips off of a DVD, but I can not seem to figure out how to do it with iMovie on my Mac.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!

Hi, I'll see if I can help. The only way I know of importing directly from iMovie off of a DVD is with a converter box hooked up to an external DVD player. However there are a few freeware programs you could try. One is Handbrake, with it you can convert your DVD into a MPEG-4 file, this is incredibly easy however the quality will be a little lower than that of a DVD. Another program is MactheRipper which will rip the entire DVD onto your hard drive but you will have to hunt through all the files to find the ones you want. I hope this helps.

  • Importing video from canon zr950

i can't import video from from canon zr950 as my macbook does not have a firewire port and the usb port does not recognize video camera. any other alternatives to importing the video from mini dv?

You really do need a firewire port on your computer to import DV.
One option would be to call the store manager of a nearby Apple Store, and politely ask if you can come in and use one of his computers that has firewire to capture your movie.
If your camcorder has a feature that let's you play it on TV through RCA cables (Red, White, and Yellow) or S-Video cable, then it is possible that you could capture using the ElGato EyeTV Hybrid. However, I have not tested this, and I would hesitate to tell you to spend $100+ if I am not sure. I may have time to test it next year some time. Even if it works, it will not be at the quality of the original DV. Would the quality difference by visible? That is another thing to test.

    Thank you Benjt and Sue:
I have first chosen to followed Sue's suggestion concerning the firewire connections since that looked to be the one most easily done quickly. I therefore had to make more room on the hard drive in my MacBook Pro since the drive is only 100 GB. I normally use an external 400GB drive to hold my video files since one of the plays last May required about 200GB! However, the play this time was a short one and not really High Density anyway like the one was in May with a much finer camera. I have been connecting the external HD via Firewire800.
I simply moved a number of files from my MacBook Pro drive and put them in the external HD as well as another HD and then disconnected the external HD from my MacBook. I was, indeed, able to import the entire tape in one shot into iMovie. iMovie is still not working right since I found that I had to click "import" in iMovie to start collecting a clip and then hit "play" on my camcorder to actually import the tape contents into the clip. I found the whole play, just 50 min this time, in that clip when we returned home this evening.
I can now get the editing done one their last play for the kids and have DVDs for them when I go back up to Gainesville to record their current play on Thursday evening.
I will then devote some time to trying to solve the rest of the problem, looking into Benjt's suggestions.
Thanks very much for your very timely critical and positive help this afternoon. For your information, I also have been working on learning Final Cut Express but as I tried to put all of my reading into practice, I now I can't even get FCE to open - but that's another story and a very different problem.
    Thanks again.

  • I can not import videos from my camera or open them... quits finder

So i have a canon powershot SD300 and I can't import videos from it using I photo (the program quits)... so I used the camera software and when I go to click on it to show review, or try and open the video files (avi-quicktime) my finder quits! What's up with that? I have added an Xvid update so I could run Xvid files... I don't know if that would do anthing. Can anyone help?

    JordanFox,
    Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
Your friend is correct; iPhoto 2 does not handle video files. You'll need at least iPhoto 5 to keep videos in your library. There is no other way to get it than to purchase a copy of iLife, either version 5 or version 6. Upgrades from one version to another cost money, updates within a version (ex; 6.0 to 6.0.6) are free downloads from Apple.
Try using Image Capture (in your Applications folder) to upload the video clips to your Mac. You can manage them yourself in your Movies folder.
    Regards.
