Can't Initialize Drive

I've added a second drive (Seagate Cheetah 36.7GB (ST336704LWV) SCSI U160) to my G3 after adding an Adaptec PCI card that supports Ultra wide SCSI. I used a 30" cable that includes temination if it matters. I also hit the CUDA after I was done. Also, this machine runs on Tiger.
I'd like to have this drive as the boot drive since it operates a 10k, but if it doesn't work I guess I'd be willing to use it as a slave. I've changed the jumpers on this drive in all combinations and only one allows me to boot up. I figured that one I get the drive erased I can partition it, then install the system, XPostFacto and what-not then swap it as the boot drive. When it first booted I got no error messages and although the drive could be seen it could not be erased in Disk Utility, I got the following error:
"Disk Erased Failed"
"with the error"
"input/output error"
I also ran System Profiler. It saw the drive also, but under Parallel SCSI--Removable Media it says "Yes".
After the first time shutting down to change jumper settings I now get the following error message:
"Disk Insertion"
"The disk you inserted was not readable by this computer"
"Initialize" "Ignore" "Eject"
Again, it can be seen by System Profiler and DU, but nothing can be done to it. It doesn't mount on the desktop either.
What have I missed? Do I have to hit the CUDA each time I change the jumper settings? Sounds odd, but I have to ask.
Thanks for any help

Which power connector you use should not make any difference, unless one is broken, which is very, very rare. Check to see that the drive is spinning up.
One strapping option you should use, if available, is to Provide Term Power TO the SCSI Bus, if there is a strap for that.
I am sure you know that each SCSI device must have a unique ID, and ID=7 is taken by the SCSI Controller and cannot be used for a drive. While the SCSI software in OS 9 does backflips to give the user a break, the SCSI software in Mac OS X is not very forgiving.
I suggest you drop back to OS 9 and ask some SCSI Utilities to help. One that comes to mind is SCSI probe, which Adaptec appears to offer for download on its site:
http://www.adaptec.com/en-US/downloads/macos/macos8x_and9x?productId=APD-29160N&dn=PowerDomain+29160N
another is Mt.Everything which has some helpful diagnostics built in:

The drive does not show up under windows explorer. Under Disk Management, the drive shows up as Not Initialized and Unallocated. When I try to initialize the drive I get "The media is write protected" Restarted the PC and also the external hard drive and the same thing.
I am running Windows 7 Professional 32 bit.

You need to be an admin and also go to Control Panel --> User Accounts and turn off UAC for your account.  You can set the level back later.
When in Disk Management, did you right mouse click on the new drive and select initialize?

  • How can I initialize an external hard drive when disk utility won't work?

Have a Seagate 300 GB external firewire drive. Formatted it for Mac. Had worked great and then one day it would not mount, got message box with choices of "initialize", "ignore" and 'eject". Clicking initialize, disk utility comes up with only the "first aid" button showing active. When I click on it nothing happens. As far as I can tgell there are no other options
Any suggestions on how I can repair this drive or recover data would be much appreciated.
    Thanks, Jim

OK, I suspect First Aid may be blank since Disk Utility "sees" the device but does not think there's anything on it.
    1. How about if you select the drive and then click the Erase tab?
    2. Also, what happens if you connect the drive, select Ignore, then open Disk Utility? Does the drive show up?
    3. What's your objective here? Do you want to try to recover data from the drive, or simply erase it? If you're looking to recover data from the drive, see my "Data Recovery" FAQ.
    4. Do you know what happened before the problem arose? For example, was there a power outage or was the cable or drive suddenly disconnected before the drive was Ejected? Any of these events can result in the drive's partition map being corrupted, leading to the kind of problems you're seeing.
    5. Did you build this FireWire drive? That is, buy and enclosure, buy a drive, and install the latter in the former? If so, have you checked the connections?
    Good luck!

    Hi,
Many links in there. Please use the following direct driver (for Windows all):

  • I would like to use time Machine to back up to a network SMB drive. I can see the drive on my desktop but it will not show in the time machine window to be able to select it

I currently have a mini server (OSX10.8.5, server 2.2.2) that I am using Time Machine to back up 4 external drives that are connected to the server via firewire 800. I would like to use Time Machine to back up to a windows network SMB drive. I can see the drive on my desktop but it will not show in the time machine window to be able to select it for use.
    Can this be done
Thanks for any and all help

The supported targets for Time Machine backups are local (direct-connected) disks, and network targets include Time Capsule, a disk hanging off the current-generation AirPort (though not earlier AirPort devices), and OS X Server systems.
The Time Machine storage is based on the HFS+ file system, so I would not expect TM to work with SMB file services.
While there are hacks to allow Time Machine to access network drives, I would not consider those to be reliable. Skim the forum and the 'net for related details, and for previous discussions of setting this up and the related issues that can arise.
Remember to test the recovery with whatever you decide to use; whole point of backups is the ability to restore the data, after all.
If you want to learn more about Time Machine, Pondini is an excellent resource.

  • When installing, get "Error! Can't initialize plug-ins directory"

Began having problems when opening Firefox and trying to make Firefox the default browser. Windows 7 updated, AVG up-to-date and virus scans clean, MalwareBytes up-to-date and scans clean. Troubleshooting finally caused me to uninstall and try for clean install ... normal Windows 7 uninstall process successful. Made sure Firefox folder in "Program Files" was deleted. Downloaded "DownloadApp_1_7_5_198_Setup" (29,442 KB) from Mozilla website and run ... get "Error! Can't initialize plug-ins directory. Please try again later."

Thank you guig2! Followed your bleepingcomputer.com link above and found the problem was my permissions on C:\Users\Bill\AppData\Local/Temp. It was not "Full Control" for my User or Administrator. Updated the two lines to permit full control for folder, subfolder and files. Ran perfect.

  • Can't find driver for SB0

    Hello,
I have an Audigy card (SB0230), and I can't find a driver for it. I tried few solutions, and here are what I done already:
    - I tried to install the newest driver from creative.com for Audigy board, but installer don't recognized my card and stopped.
    - I installed KX Audio driver. Everything went ok, installer recognized my card and I had sound, but I bought this card not only for music, but for games too, so lack of EAX led me to uninstall this driver.
    - I tried from the other side with the official driver. I unpacked it with WinRAR, installed it from Device Manager. It told me that this driver is not compatible with my device, but I ignored it and after restart I heard sound Unfortunetly, as for now I don't have any control over the card. Even Realtek has a control panel, so I figured out, that I must run installer to do something with my card, than just set volume :P Am I right? Where can I find driver for it's
I have Windows Vista, but in XP everything was the same (and I used KX in XP).

    For Vista try this one,

    Hi,
Unfortunately any HP Software component (HP Toolbox, HP Scan, etc.) for this product support 32-bit envoirnment only.
As you may find by the User Guide, only  basic Print and Scan drivers provided for 64-bit (Page 14):

  • Can't initialize OCI error occured during the login process using TOAD 9.0

I have installed the Toad 9.0 recently while login using the username & password for oracle 10.0 database , i am getting the error
    Can't initialize OCI Error 1
But i am able to login using the Sql Plus successfully..
    Thanks in Advance.

Here's one more reason why this error occurs in Toad. It is when you have more than one Oracle Client installed on your machine. Even when you select the correct Oracle Home in "Connect Using" field of Toad, you still get this error "Can't initialize OCI. Error -1". So, to solve that you need to go to the installation folder of that Oracle Home (e.g. C:\Oracle\ora92\), then go to the BIN folder. Open Oracle.Key in Notepad and confirm that it is showing Registry entry/path to the correct Oracle Home (e.g. HOME0 or HOME1 or whatever).
    I hope this helps.

What you should've done is a complete format wiping everything clean to get all your space back. And then reinstall all your custom software back that way you will know for sure how much space you have. If you have one HDD I let windows do it's own factory recover wiping the complete drive clean and it will recreate the hidden parition again and that should get your system back running. But since we know nothing what laptop your asking about that makes it harder to know what is going on.
