Can't initiate multiperson video chat (plus sign is greyed out)

I am able to be apart of muliperson video chat but I am unable to intiate a multiperson chat. I have an isight and I am using my powerbook g4. I have everything updated. My friend and I both checked our upload and download speeds and they were both above 300kbps. For some reason my plus sign is greyed out when I want to add someone but his is not. What am I missing here?

HI dansmithcreative,

  • Can't initiate a video chat....

I can't initiate a video chat. I can receive video chat invites and chat fine....there are no video icons on anyone in my buddy list, and I can't click on the invite to video chat in the buddies pull down menu??? Anyone have any suggestions???

    Hi
With ichat in the menu bar click on "view" and the make sure you have a tick by "show audio status" and "show video status".
Also click on "video" or "audio" in the menu bar and make sure "mic enabled" and "video enabled" are ticked.

  • Can't begin multiperson video chat

    Hello everyone,
A few minutes ago, I tried starting a multiperson video chat for the first time on my new MacBook Pro, but I received an error stating that my computer was not capable of hosting one!
My MacBook Pro is 2.4 GHz and has 2GB of RAM, and the other computers I am attempting to chat with are a rev. B MacBook Pro and a MacBook of unknown specs.
I checked my internet connection speed at http://www.auditmypc.com/internet-speed-test.asp
and I was at 14.75 Mbps for download and 2047 Kbps for upload, which I believe is well above iChat's requirements.
Oddly, when my friend also running on a MacBook Pro tried starting the chat, it worked, even though my MBP has better specs, and we have the same ISP!
Am I just having some weird error, or is there something going wrong with my computer?

    Hi
have you set the Quicktime streaming setting, goto sys prefs/quicktime/streaming/streaming speed, set to 1.5mbps(dont use automatic)
In ichats prefs click on video and change bandwidth limit to NONE.
    Restart iChat.

  • On multiperson video chats, I cannot see the video chat invitation. When it's one other person, I can. What should I do?

What should I do? My camera lights up green, but I can never see the video chat invitation for multiperson video chats.

I am having the same problem. I have reinstalled iTunes and I have also deleted it and reinstalled it. Same problem. You are right, it will play, although I can't see to pick something, it just plays what ever it is on.
Please help!! This is running me insane...............
I ran the applescript to resize it to no avail.
    I am running OS X - 10.5
I have the latest version of iTunes (just downloaded off of the apple website)
    4GB RAM
    500GB hard drive
Macbook Pro 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
This is also a new OS X install.
    Thanks in advance

  • Multiperson Video Chat

I've satisfied all the requirements to initiate a multiperson video chat but get the message "Your computer is not capable of initiating a multiperson video chat."
    G5, 2.0 dual, 10.4.3, iChat 3.1, DSL (more than 384 Kbps)
    Help?

It isn't the perfect solution but it does work and saves the frustration of troubleshooting iChat which can be a nightmare.
Download the Powerboost free demo from Ecamm and see if that makes any difference.
It is designed to allow computers that fall below the ridiculous apple minimum requirements to multichat and it works very well.
You shouldn't need it and neither shoudl my sister who uses a G5 iMac however after a week of trying to find the issue we just gave up and she installe the Powerboost app and we have had no problems since.
I truly beleive that if Apple would only remove the restrictions on iChat AV they would save a huge number of people from enormous frustration given that my 1G G4 Powerbook is more than capable of hosting a decent 3 way muiltichat once Power boost is installed. (With only a 256k upload speed)

  • Can't initiate a video conference from Mac to PC wtih iChat and AIM

I am using iChat on an iMac intel core duo and trying to video chat with my dad on a PC laptop using AIM 5.9. We can both invite the other to video chat, however when either one click to accept various things keep us from initiating the chat. One message we get says a firewall may be the problem. My firewall is turned off. He is running Norton. But we tried with that firewall turned off as well as the windows firewall tirned off. At the moment we are on the same network connected via a 2wire router (Myself wirelessly and he via ehternet). I have tried various settings with the router firewall including setting the PC to DMZ and the Mac to the settings specified on portforwarding.com.
When I initiate the conversation from the Mac he gets a brief flicker like the video window is opening and then it closes; meanwhile my computer says waiting for response until it gives up. When he initiates the video chat and I accept I get the message that the chat failed because I did not respond even thougth I clicked accept. He gets a mesage that the chat failed and the reason may be a firewall.
Any ideas on how to get this to work so that we are able to video chat. Also he will be returning home in a few days and using a linksys router.
Any help or ideas to try would be great

    Dear Ralph,
Sorry for the confusion, I did assume you were an Apple empoyee. Your knowledge about iChat is stunning. I appreciate your effort to help users by sharing your knowledge with such dedication. I do apologise.
    Regarding:
Port forwarding is being automated and static ip addresses will be generated automatically.
Let's call it redirection (the handshake indicates the port to forward to).
When you have NAT running in your home you have the entire Internet available to all your machines. What if you have a machine behind the NAT gateway that needs to be accessed from outside? This is where redirection comes in. Redirection allows incoming traffic to be sent to a machine behind the NAT gateway.
    An example:
rdr on tl0 proto tcp from any to any port 80 -> 192.168.1.20
This line redirects TCP port 80 (web server) traffic to a machine inside the network at 192.168.1.20. So, even though 192.168.1.20 is behind your gateway and inside your network, the outside world can access it.
The from any to any part of the above rdr line can be quite useful. If you know what addresses or subnets are supposed to have access to the web server at port 80, you can restrict them here:
rdr on tl0 proto tcp from 27.146.49.0/24 to any port 80 -> \
    192.168.1.20
This will redirect only the specified subnet. Note this implies you can redirect different incoming hosts to different machines behind the gateway. This can be quite useful. For example, you could have users at remote sites access their own desktop computers using the same port and IP address on the gateway as long as you know the IP address they will be connecting from:
rdr on tl0 proto tcp from 27.146.49.14 to any port 80 -> \
    192.168.1.20
rdr on tl0 proto tcp from 16.114.4.89 to any port 80 -> \
    192.168.1.22
rdr on tl0 proto tcp from 24.2.74.178 to any port 80 -> \
    192.168.1.23
A range of ports can also be redirected within the same rule:
rdr on tl0 proto tcp from any to any port 5000:5500 -> \
    192.168.1.20
rdr on tl0 proto tcp from any to any port 5000:5500 -> \
    192.168.1.20 port 6000
rdr on tl0 proto tcp from any to any port 5000:5500 -> \
    192.168.1.20 port 7000:*
These examples show ports 5000 to 5500 inclusive being redirected to 192.168.1.20. In rule #1, port 5000 is redirected to 5000, 5001 to 5001, etc. In rule #2, the entire port range is redirected to port 6000. And in rule #3, port 5000 is redirected to 7000, 5001 to 7001, etc.
Static ip addresses are necissary to ensure that the router does not hand out the same ip twice, hence my question about the data transferred when a user connects his new mac to the one wich was set previously by the user (or other user). I think this information is explained in the Network Traffic Analysis you direct iChat to when they are asked to port forward (manually). I do not know the url by heart but it should be a known link to you.
    Regarding auto response:
Sometimes you have to consider whether a very direct (and unelegant) interveniance in the software outweights the malfunction of an application that is causing a lot of trouble and inconvinience to Mac users. Personally I think that in this case the risk of being disturbed (still the same as anyone who askes for attention using chat or even phone) outweighs the much more irritating and incomprehensible "user did not respond" message and thus not being able to use one of the main features promised and promoted by Apple.
    Yes life is inconsistent,
at least life is not sold to you.
    Regards,
    JPM

I am unable to initiate a video chat on facebook from a pc to a new ipad mini.  Is this possible and do I need a special app on my iPad?   Receivew a message on the PC after request a video chat with the iPad that the connection is too slow and the iPad does not show an incoming video.  JMaruje

A Mac Mini s a computer you can use with the iPad.
YO do not need a computer fro backup since yo can backup to iCloud.
However, sometimes software glitches occur and require connecting the device to a compute to restore vi iTuunes.
You can control a computer via an iPod with an app like TeamViewer or LogMeIn. There are others too.
You can also use an iPad a a SECONDAY monitor for a computer. with other apps.
You need a dedicated monitor,  keyboard and mouse to setup the Mini. You can use a PC USB mouse and keyboard.

I have OS X Lion and the messages beta on my macbook pro. When in messages, if I initiate a video chat there is no audio. I know this must be something on my end because if I'm invited to a video chat it works fine. Please help

    Hi,
The Buddy's Audio can get dropped completely if the speed of your Internet connections are vastly different.
For example the minimum speed for a 1-1 video chat is only 128kbps Upload (As Downloads tend to be faster).
Where I live in the United Kingdom I can only get DLS.  This is further subject to the distance to the Exchange.
DLS at less than 3.5 km can be done at 20Mb at most exchanges.
At some exchanges there is roll out of some Fibre optic services.
In most larger towns and cities there is normally the option of a Cable service that offers similar figures.
In some parts of Sweden you can get 100Mbps services.
When the speed from your ISP varies a large amount then iChat will drop Frames to smooth out the Video
There comes a point when so many frames are dropped that the Audio will not make sense and will be dropped.
At about 128kbps a 5% variance will take you below the 100kbps mark (after allowing for the actual connection overheads)
At 10Mbps that 5% variance can be (in round terms) 500kbps
(A 500kbps service is itself good enough for a 4 way Video chat)
My experience is that PC users on AIM tend to only send the Pic at 10 frames a second (Fps). Any slower than this and the picture losses it's smoothness and flow.
You may see different Speeds and Frame Rates when you Call Out  compared to when others Call In.
Setting the Bandwidth Limit to a lower figure such as 500kbps (fast enough for 4 way chats) may get around any variances in the speeds you see in the Connection Doctor during a live chat.

  • I can't make a video-chat on Facebook?!?!

    Hi !
    I can't have a video-chat on Facebook..
It seems like FB can't find my webcam.
All other programs are closed, så it's not because the camera is busy ..
I have had that problem since October 2013 i think.
Appel doesn't seem to help me.
Their answer to the probmle is: "someone is gonna fix it soon or later"
Rubbish for a company that big and a product that expensive.
Any one there knows how to fix it?
And am I the only one with that issue?
    - Lisa

Apparently TenFourFox 5.0 supports video chat on Facebook on PowerPC Macs.  I found a post from someone who no longer contributes to Macrumors, a speculation page.  But there is this Facebook page if that's what you have, where you might be able to find more info:  http://www.facebook.com/macpowerpc

  • How many people can I invite to video chat?

    Hey,

  • Can't find the Video Chat application on my PlayBook

    Hey all,
I live in Saudi Arabia, I'm only stating where I live cause I have a feeling that this might be the reason of my problem. Anyway I can't find the video chat application icon on my playbook although I've updated its software to the latest OS 1.0.7 ---- I hope some1 help me with that cause I need this application desperately.
    Thanks

it may not be available to customers in saudi Arabia, if so do security wipe setting up with a proxy server in the US or Canada. This way you will have the video chat software.

  • Can't start a video chat

Hello, 9 out of 10 times I can't start a video chat. Sometimes it works if I quit ichat, or restart my computer. But most of the time it doesn't work. When I do get it to work, it works fine. Error is that ""[user] is not accepting chat". User is always me!

I don't think it's error 8. I am logging in via AIM to ichat. I can chat with some users but not all. The error I get is only on video chat. The window says "starting video chat" and then an error comes up "There was a communication error during your chat" . I have restarted ichat and restarted my computer. Other users can connect to me for a video chat, although sometimes they have to restart their computers to do so.
The details of the error are

    Because something is wrong.
To identify and correct the problem, start with the Help menu command for the software application that you are trying to use to create the video chat.

If everything but the camera works properly, troubleshoot the camera with http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2090.
If you post back for more help, tell us:
    (1) which Mac OS ( < About this Mac) you use.
    (2) Also, tell us which specific application software version you are using.  You can find the software application version information by using the "About application name" menu command once you launch the application.  For example: if you launch FaceTime, use the FaceTime > About FaceTime menu command to see the Version info that appears in the dialog window that opens.  If you are using more than one software application, give version information for each of them.

My standard list of things to do first for these wierd sort of problems, but I also tend to run these before I go to burn an iDVD project just to be safe. Keep in mind this list represents the programs I tend to use. There are several alternate programs that do the same things with some combining the functions of some of the ones below. So everyone has their favorites, but here are mine...
Run MacJanitor (free download) to do all the Unix Cron Maintenance scripts.
Run Disk Utility (Applications -> Utilities) and repair disk permissions on your start up drive (typically your internal drive). Also verify any other drives mounted on the system, especially any external drives that you use for iMovie and iDVD projects.
Run Preferential Treatment (free download) to check for corrupt/damaged application and system preference files.
Run Cache Out X (free download) to clear all system and application caches.
Reboot your Mac (after running Cache Out X you are given the option to restart the machine).
My guess is that after running Cache Out X and restarting you might find your hard drive space back again. If not, you might try booting off your restore/install CD or DVD that came with your system and then trying to delete that log file, then rebooting with your hard drive again.
