Can't install 32Go of Ram in my Mac Pro

Hi Everyone,
I own a 2012 Mac Pro actually running with 2 x 8Go of memory plus 6 x 2Go (these ones were provided by the reseller).
When I bought the set of 8go, I picked 4 to upgrade to 32Go but it never worked, the Mac Pro couldn't see 32Go, only 16Go.
I tried several slot configurations without any success.
I sent the memory back twice to the reseller and had the same issue so I guess it's not linked to that but to the machine.
Right now all my slots are filled with 2 x 8Go and 6 x 2Go and it works so I don't understand why I can't install 4 x 8Go.
Any help or explanation welcome

2009 thru 2012 use DIMMs that are different from the FBDIMMs used on older models.
When larger DIMMs first became available, some of these were "Registered" DIMMs (they have an output buffer that holds the output longer). Experience showed that these did not mix and match with "Unregistered" DIMMs, but Blogs indicated that some different sizes did not mix and match correctly.
So what you may be seeing is a mix of older and newer DIMMs, even in the same sizes, that are not compatible.
No pairing is required. These Macs use slots 1, 2, and 3 independently. Slot 4 shares a channel with slot 3.
To check new DIMMs when you receive them, remove ALL DIMMs from the machine, and populate slots 1, 2, and 3 with new DIMMs. Power up your Mac Pro to test. The error-correction Hardware will be used during power up to determine if ANY errors occur in the first minute of testing, and those DIMM slots will be marked "empty".
Once you have determined the working status of your new DIMMs, the next part of the process is "what will work with what". This requires another complete pass using only known-good DIMMs trying different configurations until you find one that is reliable. You may find that some new or old DIMMs will not "play nice with others" and can make a sound decision of what to keep and what to reject.
As you found out, this requires a very methodical, almost "driven" approach, or you end up sending everything back.

  • Can't install Bootcamp on a 4,1 Mac pro

    Greetings !
I'm trying to install bootcamp on my 4,1 Mac pro but i'm experiencing a weird issue....
First of all, here's the summary of the machine :
Macpro 4,1 2x2,26ghz quad core xeon, 6gb ram, intel 335 ssd plugged in the optical drive bay, and a bluray burner...Mountain Lion is 10.8.5...I removed my 2 additional cards (a decklink HD extreme and a sonnet e-sata "tempo" controller)....I added a second drive in the bay #1 (an apple seagate 250gb which was originally in the mac pro)...
1st weird thing : my smc version is 1.39F5....I downloaded the 1.4 (which is the latest for 4,1 MP) on Apple website but it won't install, displaying "your computer doesn't need that update"...
2nd weird thing : I succed in launching windows ( win 7 professional 64 bits edition) installation, i can then format the volume in ntfs within the installation program....BUT...After a while it copies and expands installation files, and really starts the installation (devices detection, etc)...And that's when it hurts...I can have either a BSOD with "bugcode_driver_error" , either the computer restarts and says the installation can no longer continue and I need to start all over...I have an iMac and could install windows on it without a glitch....I tried 2 differents dvd : the windows official, and an optimized (with windows updates slipstreamed inside) a friend made...No go.....I'm gonna need a bunch of softwares on windows pretty quickly for my job....
Do you guys have any idea ? I'm starting to run off of any fresh of 'em
Thank you a lot in advance for your help, and happy season from Paris
    Dirk

If you bought a retail copy of Tiger & are not using it for another Mac, you do hold a Tiger OS license you could transfer to your brother legally. However, your brother still will need disks that install the PPC version of the OS for it to be installed on the G4, & for troubleshooting or some maintenance tasks. Intel-specific installer disks do not meet this requirement.
If you can document your purchase (like if you have a receipt for it from an authorized Apple dealer or the proof-of-purchase certificates) you may be able to purchase a replacement disk through Applecare.

  • Installing medium-cost RAM on my Mac Pro

    Hi everybody!
I've just bought a 2x 2.66GHz Mac Pro and it's wonderful. However, I ordered it with a minimum configuration because I thought I could find expansion pieces on the market.
Is there any problem if I install a 1GB-667-DDR2 RAM module non-ECC and unbuffered (it is to say, different from the ECC FB-DIMM from Apple, which seems to me TOO EXPENSIVE)?
I've read about heating > noise troubles, but I can't really believe them. Has anyone of you tested a medium-cost (e.g. Corsair) RAM module on a new Mac Pro? Does it give good results?
I didn't find problems when looking for a 3GB/s SATA HDD, but it's difficult and -above all- expensive to buy an Apple RAM module or other brands' ones with the same technology.
    Can anybody help me, please?

    Shima,
To quote from the Apple site for you on the performance benefits from symmetrical RAM configurations on Mac Pro.
The Mac Pro comes with two memory riser cards, each with four DIMM slots. With a total of eight slots, you can add up to 16 GB of memory. Memory DIMM pairs should be installed evenly on both risers. This table shows Mac Pro RAM configurations that will achieve ideal performance:
Riser A contains: Riser B contains:
    2 x 512MB 2 x 512MB
    2 x 1GB 2 x 1GB
    2 x 2GB 2 x 2GB
    4 x 512MB 4 x 512MB
    4 x 1GB 4 x 1GB
    4 x 2GB 4 x 2GB
Note: DIMMs must be installed in pairs of equal size from the same vendor. For instance, you must not have one or three DIMMs on either riser at any time. Additionally, two DIMMs from different vendors should not be combined and used as a pair.
From tests I've read around the web, filling the slots as Apple suggests achieves a 5-7% performance boost. Whether your MacPro would even recognise ram installed randomly, or in unmatched sizes is something I do not know.
Enjoy your MacPro, I am jealous.

  • How can i install 8 gb ram on a mac mini early 2009 when it says i dont need the EFI firmware 2.1?i can only install 4 gb but the side of OWC says i can install 8 gb? what to do?

i have a mac mini early 2009 and i want to install 8 gb ram but it doesn,t work.
it says on the OWC site that i have to install the EFI firmware 2.1 update but it won,t let me,it says(the mac mini)that i don,t need this update.
my kernel is 32bit but my EFI is 64 bit,how can i install 64 bit so i can use the 8GB cause with 32 bit i can,t use more than 4gb ram

    Check your computer's EFI Boot ROM version;
    1. From the Apple () menu, choose About This Mac
    2. Click More Info Under Contents
    3. Select Hardware
    If your Mac mini's Boot ROM version is the following or more recent, then you do not need the update to use 8 GB of RAM;
    Boot ROM Version: MM31.0081.B06

  • Can I install Windows 8 on an older Mac Pro with Mavericks upgrade?

I have an Early 2008 Mac Pro which I just upgraded to Mavericks, which came with Boot Camp 5.1. Can I install Windows 8 on my machine? The information on this site suggests I can only use Windows 7 with Boot Camp 4 on my system, but does this take an upgraded OS into account? Put another way, is the version compatibility determined only by my OS, or also by my hardware (processor, memory, etc.). This is the first time I will be using Boot Camp to install Windows on this machine.

no, it is determined mainly by machine type then by requisite driver support in the OSX
officially, x64 w7 is as far as you can go but google around, i'm sure there have been people who got w8 to work

  • Can I install Tiger on a G4 using Mac Pro or MacBook Pro install discs?

I gave my old G4 dual500MHz processor running system 9.2.2 to my brother some time ago and he really wants to upgrade to tiger. I bought a copy of Tiger when it first came out but I have lost the disc. I currently have 3 macs and they're all intel machines so I don't have install discs on hand that are pre-intel. I would like to do a complete overhaul of the G4 but I am worried that the install discs I currently have might not work on it. I also have Disk Warrior and Drive Genius and plan to run them extensively on that machine as well. If not, can I start the G4 up as a target disc and do the install from my mac pro? Or is there a way to download a disc image of the older system and install it that way?

If you bought a retail copy of Tiger & are not using it for another Mac, you do hold a Tiger OS license you could transfer to your brother legally. • Can't install Lion from usb to my mac pro!!!

I created a USB boot disk per instructions and when it boots on my Mac Pro all it goes to is the Safari Only interface with no options to install anything. Just to be sure I boot to the same USB on my Macbook Air and I get the OS X Lion install options/interface so the USB key works.
I have a brand new 3TB drive as the install disc. I did boot to a Snow Leopard install disc so that I could format the drive correctly as the USB key didn't give me those options. In any case I can't install Lion for some reason to this machine. Any ideas?
It's a 2.8Ghz Quad Core Mac Pro bought in Oct of 2008.
    Thanks!!

It's not specifically hardware specific. But IIRC the Air computers used a special version of Lion, at least when Lion first came out.
Try this, use LionDiskMaker to create the USB installer.
Serial Serveur » Lion DiskMaker (US)
See if that creates a usable USB stick.

  • Can I install old G5 software onto my Mac Pro

    Hi all,
I have a Mac 8 Core Pro running Snow Leopard and Logic Pro 9.
I have slowly but surely been moving the software from my dual core G5 (OS X Tiger) to the Mac Pro.
I have a few software programs that I need advice on whether I can install them on the new Mac Pro.
Absynth 4 - Has Universal Binary but is for OSX 10.4
Trilogy Bass - Early Copy for OS9
DFH Superior - Early copy for Mac OS 10.2
Can the above be installed to my new Mac Pro or should I just forget it and not bother??
    Thanks in advance

Absynth 4 runs OK with the latest versions from NI (download the updaters using Service Center)
Trilogy.... Forget it... can run using a Wrapper, but it's really bad. (Does work though! Downloads from Spectrasonics. Much better to get the new Trilian instead.
Superior... latest versions run OK (DL from Toontrack)

  • Can I use HP XW8400 ram in my Mac Pro

    Hi guys,
I have the opportunity to buy 4 x 2GB of RAM which is/appears to be the same spec as that fitted in the HP XW8400 workstation. I'd rather buy Apple branded but it is too expensive.
Can anyone confirm this RAM will be compatible please [it will have the large heat sinks fitted]
    Thanks

Just looked on Crucial.com and specs are: -
    HP XW8400
    DDR2 PC2-5300 • CL=5 • Fully Buffered • ECC • DDR2-667 • 1.8V • 512Meg x 72 •   Part #: CT570802
    Mac Pro 2006
    DDR2 PC2-5300 • CL=5 • Fully Buffered • ECC • DDR2-667 • 1.8V • 512Meg x 72 •   Part #: CT685422
Different part numbers as they have different heat sinks but looks like it's a match; just would like an expert to confirm if possible please
