Can't install Appleworks 6 on Intel/Leopard

I bought a new iMac last week after my Powerbook died. Today I installed the Leopard upgrade on it. Then I got out my Appleworks 6 CD to install it, but Leopard refuses, saying "because the Classic environment is no longer supported." This is an early version of Appleworks 6; it says it requires OS 8.1 or greater.

Obviously, you have an early AppleWorks 6 CD when the installer was only OS 8/9. It wasn't until sometime in 2001 when the AppleWorks installer also included an OS X version.
You have a couple of choices to get AppleWorks 6 installed on your new iMac. The easiest would be to buy a new package, but that may not be necessary. The best solution is to find someone with a Mac that has Classic or runs OS 8 or 9 & can burn a CD. Install AppleWorks 6 on the other Mac, update AppleWorks to at least version 6.2.4 & then burn the whole AppleWorks 6 folder to a CD. You can then copy the AppleWorks 6 folder to the Applications folder on your iMac. This CD will now be your backup should you ever need to reinstall AppleWorks again.
If you don't know someone else with a Mac you can use, a local Mac user group is a good place to start. You can search for one on Apple's Find a User Group page.
To keep within the Apple user license, you need to remove the copy from the Mac you used to install AppleWorks. If the someone already has AppleWorks installed, just burn their folder to the CD. You will remain within the license since you do have a license for AppleWorks for your Mac.

  • Can I install Mac OS X Leopard (not the server version) on a Xserve?

    Hi all.
Can I install Mac OS X Leopard (not the server version) on a Xserve and run BootCamp (to use Windows), and other Mac applications like FileMaker, Toast, iWork, e.g.?
    Thanks in advance.

Can I install Mac OS X Leopard (not the server version) on a Xserve
Yes, but some functions may not work as intended. See here for some information; all Mac OS X 10.5 installations are universal binary.
and run BootCamp (to use Windows)
Probably not. Use a program such as Parallels Desktop.
and other Mac applications like FileMaker, Toast, iWork, e.g.?
    Yes.

  • How can I open Appleworks files in Leopard?

I installed Leopard as an upgrade on my MacBook without problems. Everything seemed to open and print on my Epson Stylus CX7800 without problems; I was able to scan and print from a scanned file without difficulty; there was even an enhanced print dialog which was great. HOWEVER, when I opened files created with Appleworks 6.2.9, or created and successfully saved a new document and I attempted to print it AppleWorks and the print dialogue either locked up or crashed. I tried massaging everything I knew of but still was unable to print any AppleWorks document. I get the print screen and click print but nothing, nada happens. I cannot print to PDF on the left hand dropdown either.
I repaired permissions (both before and after installing Leopard) and have also dumped AppleWorks preference file, then restarting all to no avail. I cannot open the Appleworks files with either Pages or Keynote (did not even recognize the word processing files). When I attempt to, they crash after appearing to open a word processing file but all I got was gibberish! I attempted to open the files with Adobe 8 but it would recognize them and seemed to open them but then I got a "cannot open" message.
I have heard that trying to use Leopard with AppleWorks can cause a corruption of the hard drive. Is this true? I did find a way to solve my immediate problem but it is not one I like at all. I finally wiped one segment of my external 250GB drive and installed Tiger on it, then copied all my files to that segment. I can load and print Appleworks normally as before. I guess that is one kind of "fix" if a bit unwieldy since I prefer to use my MacBook from my reclining chair because of severe arthritis. ( I will again be out of the loop for awhile as my right knee is being replaced tomorrow.)
I am so curious as to why some seem to be able to use their AppleWorks. I did install Leopard as an update rather than wiping my HD and doing a new install. Should I delete AppleWorks and all associated files and reinstall AppleWorks and reinstall Leopard from scratch? Do you think that would help? I would appreciate any help anyone can give me as there are other problems with Leopard but less onerous than this one. Anyone out there to help the thousands of us who have used AppleWorks extensively as educators?
MacBook 2GHz Intel Core Duo with 2 GB 67 MHz DDR2 SDRAM and Leopard 10.5.1

I have heard that trying to use Leopard with AppleWorks can cause a corruption of the hard drive. Is this true?
No, not at all. AppleWorks actually runs better in Leopard on both my PPC & Intel Macs than it did in Tiger. I have found AppleWorks to be faster & more stable in Leopard on an Intel than any other system I've used.
I repaired permissions (both before and after installing Leopard) and have also dumped AppleWorks preference file, then restarting all to no avail.
There are more than one AppleWorks preferences to delete. Only deleting the .plist or just the files in the AppleWorks folder in Preferences will not work. They must all be deleted at the same time. Take a look at this user tip, AppleWorks has stopped working correctly.
Deleting the preferences often fixes printing problems. Also, make sure you have the newest driver for your printer from the manufacturer's web site.
I did install Leopard as an update rather than wiping my HD and doing a new install. Should I delete AppleWorks and all associated files and reinstall AppleWorks and reinstall Leopard from scratch?
Possibly. I chose to do erase & install with migrating users & data for all of my Macs. I did try the upgrade with the MacBook Pro & it was a disaster with failure to start up after installing Leopard. I was willing to take the chance because everything on my MacBook Pro is on my desktop Mac.

  • Can I install Appleworks 5.0 on OS X 10.5.8?

I have the original OS 8.5 system software cd from my old blueberry iMac, from which I am transferring Appleworks 5.0.3 files to my newer MacBook Pro. Can I install the Appleworks 5.0 application from my original OS 8.5 system software cd onto my MacBook Pro to read the files which I am transferring from my old blueberry iMac?

You will need to get AppleWorks 6.2.4 or 6.2.9 to open those files on an Intel Mac or any Mac running Leopard or later. You could try eBay and do a search for "AppleWorks" or "Apple Works" (some people put a "space" in the name). Hardcore Mac sells AppleWorks 6.2.4. You do need to make sure you get at least AppleWorks 6.2 with an OS X-aware installer.

  • Can I install Windows 7 on Leopard 10.5.8?

  • How can I install Appleworks on a new Mac?

I've been using Macs since 1993, and have a lot of old files in Appleworks format. Whilst I now use Office and iWork '08, I'd be lost without Appleworks for many old files. Is it possible to install Appleworks on a new Mac, running Leopard? I hope to replace my laptop soon, but the fact its been discontinued has put my off for now. Any help gratefully received!

You can install AppleWorks 6.2.4 or AppleWorks 6.2.9 on your new Mac, using an install disk that has an OS X installer. (Installers prior to mid 2001 ran in Mac OS 9, and although the version of AppleWorks they install will likely run on Tiger or Leopard, the installer won't.)
Getting hold of a retail version may prove a bit difficult, as Apple is no longer supplying it to retailers. Hard Core Mac was reported recently to have install disks containing AppleWorks 6.2.4, and AW 6 does come up occassionally on eBay and other similar sites.
If the laptop you are replacing contains AppleWorks, you can transfer the application to your new machine by simply moving the whole AppleWorks 6 folder and its contents into the Applications folder on the new machine. Doing this via a CD will give you a backup copy should you ever need to reinstall the application. AppleWorks will create any other required files and folders as it needs them. Note that the usual single user licence allows for only a single copy of the application to exist on a single computer at a time. After moving the AW 6 folder to the new machine, you should delete it from the old to stay within the terms of the licence.

  • Can't install Appleworks in OS X

I have Appleworks 6 on CD and various updater files on other CDs. However the last time I reinstalled my OS on this machine I didn't bother installing Classic and without it I cannot install v. 6.0 and I believe until I install this, I can't install any of the OS X updaters
So my question is, is there any means by which I can install Appleworks without installing an entire Classic system folder?
With my utmost thanks in advance as always for your kind assistance
    Best regards
    Bernard

You don't have to buy a new Mac. The retail box of AppleWorks can be purchased at most retailers that sell Apple software, either in a "brick & mortar" or online store. Sometimes you can find it on eBay. Do a search for "AppleWorks" or "Apple Works" (some people put a "space" in the name).

  • CAN I INSTALL SOLARIS 10 INTEL PLATFORM ON MY PC

Can anybody guide me whether i can install solaris 10 intel platform on my pc having following configuration
    1. Processor = AMD SEMPRON 2500+ 64-BIT.
    2. MainBoard = ASUS K8V-MX.
    3. RAM-= 512 MB DDR PC3200
    4. Display = Onboard VIA/S3G Unichrome Pro IGP.
    5. LAN = Onboard VIA RHINE II Fast Ethernet Adapter.
    6. Monitor = 17" LG CRT, Model = Studioworks 700S
    7. Sony DVD- ROM.
    8. Samsung DVD-RW.
    9. HDD = 40 GB Samsung 7200 RPM.
If anybody knows let me know at my e-mail [email protected]

I don't think you will have many problems in this platform, but I'm not 100% sure.
What I recommend you is to get the VMWare and try there. VMWare is a software where you can create a virtual machine running under windows. In this virtual machine you could install solaris 10 (and any other OS you want to test in your computer). I have my Solaris 10 running under VMWare with excellent results (Laptop with Intel Celeron processor)... where I have VMWare installed in Windows!

  • Installing AppleWorks on Intel Mac

I am about to buy a MacBook. As a teacher with older Macs in my classroom, I still use AppleWorks. However, as I recall the disk I use to install AppleWorks is an OS 9 program that I then update using the 6.2.9 updater to run under OS X. Since the Intel Macs don't support Classic, is there a way I will be able to install AppleWorks?

    Welcome to Apple Discussions
Whether or not the installer you have will run in OS X depends on when it was made. The installers for AppleWorks 6.2 or higher, after mid-2001 or so, are OS X installers. Otherwise, copy the whole AppleWorks 6 folder from the Applications folder from an older Mac to the Intel Mac. Burning it to a CD will give you a backup should you ever need to reinstall. Do not copy over any preferences (except the Button Bar preferences if you have customized the Button Bar) or the AppleWorks User Data folder. To keep within the Apple end user license, remove AppleWorks from the first Mac.

  • Can't install Appleworks 6.0.4

I remember this happening before but I just can't remember what to do.
Just reinstalled 10.2 on my Powerbook G3 and want to install Appleworks 6.0.4 but for some reason the installer wants me to install an OS9 version only.
I distinctly remember buying this for OSX but there doesn't seem to be one for OSX and I can't seem to work out how to install it on 10.2!
I remember something similar to this happening before and I had to install it onto a Partition with OS9 on and it would open straight up into 10.2 without using Classic.
    Thanks

You need Classic to run the installer, even though the program installs in OS X. Back when Appleworks 6 was invented, there was no such thing as an OS X only machine. You'll need to install Classic if you don't have it, or if you still have a copy of Appleworks on another computer, just drag the appleworks folder from the applications folder of the old machine to that of the new machine.
Once you've got Appleworks installed, you'll need to update to at least 6.2.4 to have the program run with any stability in OS X.

Hi guys , just wondering can i install on my Early 2011 MacBook Pro 13'' OS X Snow Leopard ? i dont like Lion at all .   Many Thanks .

You may be able to install SL 10.6.8 (assuming there was no firmware update) if you follow these directions. Check with MacTracker http://mactracker.ca/ and download their free app detailing more info you ever thought you needed to know about Apple products.
    - you can re partition partition the mac drive so that  you can retain the pre-installed lion install
    - or use an external drive
    - attach your computer via firewire 800 to a Mac computer (capable of running 10.6.8 )
    - boot the your computer holding down the T key to get it into target disk mode, it will appear on desktop as an external drive.
    - install SLS v 10.6.3  Retail version from the DVD onto the new partition or external drive where you want Sl installed.
    - install the 10.6.8 combo update.

  • Can I install Lion over Snow Leopard without erasing and restoring hard drive?

Been reading a lot about downloading Lion. Recommended to back up hard drive to ext. drive, erase hard drive, install Lion and then re-install apps and files from ext. drive. Can I just install Lion over Snow Leopard without erasing all apps and files on hard drive?

If you do an upgrade install then be sure to do this first:
    1. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    2. Make a bootable backup just in case. Clone using Restore Option of Disk Utility
Open Disk Utility from the Utilities folder.
Select the destination volume from the left side list.
Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
Check the box labeled Erase destination.
Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to the Source entry field.
Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Destination means the external backup drive. Source means the internal startup drive.

  • Can I install/upgrade to snow leopard on my older system?

I need to install Filemker for work, but it tells me I need at least Mac OS 10.6.0 (snow leopard), and I have 10.5.8 (leopard). Can I buy and install the snow leopard system? My MacBook is from 2008.

Yes. All Intel Macs which have at least 1GB of RAM and shipped with Mac OS X 10.5.8 or earlier can run Snow Leopard.
