Can't install Bootcamp...

This is the second mac I've tried to install windows on. First one I tried for a total of about 40 hours and went to the apple store twice. They couldn't do it, so I finally just gave up. I concluded that even though it was a 2006 if wasn't late enough in 2006 for it to be compatible with windows.
So I just bought a mid 2011 macbook air. I still have 3 copies of windows from my last attempt at trying to install windows and I feel like I'm going down the same road.
First problem... Macbook air doesn't have a optical drive so I drove tot he apple store and bought one.
When I run bootcamp it wants to perform tree tasks. 1) Make a bootable disk on a USB drive 2) Download support Software 3) Make a windows partition and start install.
So 1) There is not an ISO file on the windows DVD which makes me think I have to run poweriso or imgburn to make my own image. I gave up and this and went to step 2). Also can't find a 4gb USB drive so I'm going to have to go out and buy one of those. I have tried downloading the windows support data and failed 6 times now. I've read on other parts of the forum that you need to reconfigure the network settings and proxy settings and router settings, tried all of that and nothing works. It downloads for like a hour and then says "Couldn't download network error."
Don't want to try step 3 cause I don't have either of the other two steps done.
I'm so frustrated I don't know what to do at this point!!!
I think that apple stating that it can run windows is false advertising. Or misleading at best. Also I called the apple store to ask them if I could get help installing windows and they said that they do not offer this as a service. So why do macs come preinstalled with bootcamp????

Millions of people run Windows in BootCamp, false advertising

Can I install Bootcamp on an external Hard Drive? I don't see why it wouldn't work. Do I need to install the Mac OS on the external Hard Drive first, then Bootcamp?
    Parallels
Another question. Does Parallels allow you to not have to use the "option" key to boot into Windows? I mean if I use Parallels can I use XP or Vista at the same time as my mac applications?
What, (if any) are the drawbacks to using "Parallels"?

Is it possible for Apple to allow users to program a key on their keyboard, when pressed will bring up Windows so they don't have to always restart? I need to switch between Windows and mac OS quite often and it's a real pain to always restart. What options do I have?

By Microsofts Design no Windows can be installed and booted from external HDs. BootCamp just follows this.
However, according to this http://tubeshards.wordpress.com/2006/12/05/install-windows-to-a-macintosh-usb-dr ive/ it can be done.

Parallels is an OS X application which don't need a restart of your Mac to run Windows.
Therefor you can run OS X and Parallels Windows side-by-side.
Main drawback is, that Windows runs not native (on the real hardware) but in a virtualized environment.
While this is more than acceptable for 'standard' Office programs, any program that needs direct hardware access (especially games and 3D-programs) either do not run at all or run at noticeable slower speed.
Also you have to realize that the amount of RAM in your Mac is divided between OS X and Parallels Windows.

BootCamp is no option then, since it needs a reboot everytime you want to switch between OS X and Windows.
Parallels (and VMWare Fusion and VirtualBox, BTW) run alongside OSX.

    You're welcome. Hope it helps.

  • Can i install bootcamp on the new iMac late 2012 "27"?

can i install bootcamp on the new iMac late 2012 "27" without fushion drive?

    You have two possibilities:
    1. Buy the USB SuperDrive and install Windows from a disc.
    2. Use an USB drive with the Windows 7 installer inside.
Boot Camp isn't compatible with Windows 8, so you will have to wait. Also, the Late 2012 is only compatible with the 64-bit Windows 7 edition

  • I can't install Bootcamp 4

I can not restart in Mac OS X as my keyboard does not work and I do not recognize any external keyboard.
Currently only I can access a useless version of Windows 7 32-bit.
I can't install Bootcamp on my mac 13 inch late 2009. I get an error that says "This version is not supported for this computer". I've tried with Bootcamp 4 and 5.

Read and follow the Boot Camp guide. It sounds like you are trying to install the drivers while booted to OSX. The drivers get loaded from within Windows.

  • Can't install Bootcamp, stuck in Windows XP

Hey everybody, I recently got a MacBook Pro with OS X Lion. I partitioned the hard drive and successfully installed Windows XP. I tried to install Bootcamp, but I get an error message saying that Bootcamp can only be installed in Windows 7. How can I get back to OS X Lion? I don't have any Bootcamp files because I can't install. The Computer is only showing the partitioned hard drive. Please help!

The usual way is to reboot your Mac while holding down the Alt/Option-key until the Boot Selection screen is shown.
Choose your OSX volume with the cursor-keys and hit Enter.
Once in OSX use the BootCamp Assistant again to delete the BootCamp Windows partition and revert back to one single OSX-volume.
Then go to System Preferences - Startup Volume and set your OSX to be the default.
Apple has stopped support of Windows XP and Vista with the release of OSX Lion and BootCamp 4.0

  • Can't install Bootcamp on a 4,1 Mac pro

    Greetings !
I'm trying to install bootcamp on my 4,1 Mac pro but i'm experiencing a weird issue....
First of all, here's the summary of the machine :
Macpro 4,1 2x2,26ghz quad core xeon, 6gb ram, intel 335 ssd plugged in the optical drive bay, and a bluray burner...Mountain Lion is 10.8.5...I removed my 2 additional cards (a decklink HD extreme and a sonnet e-sata "tempo" controller)....I added a second drive in the bay #1 (an apple seagate 250gb which was originally in the mac pro)...
1st weird thing : my smc version is 1.39F5....I downloaded the 1.4 (which is the latest for 4,1 MP) on Apple website but it won't install, displaying "your computer doesn't need that update"...
2nd weird thing : I succed in launching windows ( win 7 professional 64 bits edition) installation, i can then format the volume in ntfs within the installation program....BUT...After a while it copies and expands installation files, and really starts the installation (devices detection, etc)...And that's when it hurts...I can have either a BSOD with "bugcode_driver_error" , either the computer restarts and says the installation can no longer continue and I need to start all over...I have an iMac and could install windows on it without a glitch....I tried 2 differents dvd : the windows official, and an optimized (with windows updates slipstreamed inside) a friend made...No go.....I'm gonna need a bunch of softwares on windows pretty quickly for my job....
Do you guys have any idea ? I'm starting to run off of any fresh of 'em
Thank you a lot in advance for your help, and happy season from Paris
    Dirk

If you bought a retail copy of Tiger & are not using it for another Mac, you do hold a Tiger OS license you could transfer to your brother legally. However, your brother still will need disks that install the PPC version of the OS for it to be installed on the G4, & for troubleshooting or some maintenance tasks. Intel-specific installer disks do not meet this requirement.
If you can document your purchase (like if you have a receipt for it from an authorized Apple dealer or the proof-of-purchase certificates) you may be able to purchase a replacement disk through Applecare.

  • Can't install bootcamp 2.1 on windows vista 64

Hi, I'm trying to install bootcamp 2.1 on vista 64, I've tried through ASU (Apple Software Update) and Downloaded the version avaliable on apple support page. ASU says it can't install it. And the downloaded version simply crashes with no message.
    I have a Macbook Pro 15.4" 2.4ghz, 2gb ram, 200gb hdd

    Hi The hatter,
Thanks for your reply, my macbook model is the correct, I bought it last week. So, I tried the description on the other article but it still gives me the following error: "Error applying transforms. Verify that the specified transforms are valid.".
I believe I don't have anything special installed, just installed basic stuff for my work like .net framework and visual studio.

  • Can i install bootcamp on mac mini snow leopard server 2010

hello, there are 2 harddisks on a mac mini server 2010 (snow leopard server.)i want to use the other hdd for installing Windows home server 2011 x64 .
but there is no bootcamp on the server.(do i have to download it?)
how can i do this,or do i have to use parallels desktop.
i have also a mac mini and a macbook pro and an alienware and a clevo laptop so i want the 2 servers seperate(and the mac-server on all the time)

You would need to install SL (non sever) on you Mac Mini Server.
You may be able to install the nonsever version on your 2nd HDD
-Partition you 2nd HDD to the max BootCamp Partition
-Install Windows Home Server on the BootCamp Partition (don't know of Windows Server is supported)
    So you would have:
    hdd1 - SnowLeopard Server
    hdd2 - SnowLeopard (non-server) + Bootcamp Partition
    Scenario 2:
If you don't have a need for SL Server SW, then wipe out the system and put only the regular SL (non sever) on disk 1. Partition Disk2 for Bootcamp only.
    hdd1- SL (non-sever)
    hdd2 - Bootcamp
I really don't know if you can copy the Bootcamp app onto SL Server OS to create a Bootcamp partition.

  • Mac mini 2010, can't install bootcamp drivers

My brother's computer (mid 2010 Macmini) has previously been partioned with a Windows 7 32 bit system. Under bootcamp 4 we could install Windows 7 32 bit system, plus drivers and it was used for playing games on Steam. The partition was removed so it could be increased and in the process updated the Apple side software to 10.8.5, which installed bootcamp 5.
Bootcamp 5 won't use our 32 bit install disk, so we went through the process of getting a 64 bit install disk and it installed without a problem. Now the drivers on the PC side as downloded by Bootcamp 5 won't work. I get the error message "Bootcamp x64 is unsupported on this computer model". So my next step was to download the bootcamp 4 drivers and they also do not work. I get the error message "this version of bootcamp is not intended for this computer model". I have had a look around and can't find anyone with the exact same issue.
Also the "troubleshoot capatability" fix doesn't work I have tried it. Can anyone help?

Cool - now to find out about sharing data across platforms.
Since Vista needs its system partition to be NTFS, you can read files from while in Mac OSX, but can't write to NTFS without additional help.
Either Paragons NTFS for Mac http://www.paragon-software.com/home/ntfs-mac/ or NTFS-3G http://www.ntfs-3g.org/ enable OSX to write to NTFS partitions.
The access your Mac OSX from Vista you can use MacDrive http://www.mediafour.com/products/macdrive/
Or use an external harddisk with the FAT32 file system, since Mac OSX and Vista can read and write to/from FAT32.
But note that FAT32 has a built-in single-file size limitation of about 4GB.
    Thanks again, Paul.
You're welcome anytime. Hope it it helps

  • Can i install Bootcamp 5 support software on Bootcamp 4?

Can i install the Bootcamp 5 support software on Bootcamp 4 running Windows 8.1 (32-bit) currently? Or is there any way, i can upgrade my Bootcamp 4 to 5 without formatting the hard disk and repartition it again? Thanks for the advice.

Yes, they do. iTunes checks with Apple's servers before starting the installation, and won't allow the installation of a version other than the latest released one compatible with a given device.

  • Can not install bootcamp 3.1 to win7

    win7 32bit. bootcamp 3.0 now.
I've downloaded BootCamp_3.1_32-bit, but only the display card is installed. bootcamp is still 3.0
I have a big problem is that I can not use the USB WEB ADAPTER, that is to say I can only use WIFI, and can not use the line.
    Hope to see your answer.

I am ALSO in the same boat. I have OS X Leopard 10.5.4 with the latest software updates. I recently uninstalled Safari from my system because I wanted to exclusively use Firefox. I decided to reinstall it after about a week, so I went to Apple.com > Downloads, and downloaded the latest version of Safari. When I tried to install, I had the same problem as everybody else reporting this problem, by getting the following error message "You cannot install Safari on this volume. This update requires Mac OS X 10.5.2 or newer."
I ran the custom-install of Safari from my OS X Leopard install DVD, and when running "Sofware update" from the Apple menu in my OS, it tells me I have the latest software. So, once again, after I had Safari installed from my Leopard DVD, I downloaded the latest Safari pkg. from Apple.com, and it is giving me the same error.
WHY is this happening?? Why can't I upgrade from 10.0.4 to 10.1, even though I have Leopard and Safari installed again from the Leopard disk itself? I thought Apple's objective is to make everything so easy and hassle-free, unlike Windows/PC, which is why I switched nearly a year ago.

  • Installed Win7 64bit but can't install Bootcamp

    Hi all,
Just installed Windows 7 64 bit but can't get Bootcamp to install. Downloaded 3.2 (64) update but that requires 3.1. Downloaded 3.1 (64) update but that requires 3.0. 3.0 won't install from the DVD as it doesn't support the 64 bit Windows 7.
Is there a version I can download or do I have to get rid of that install and do it all again using the 32 bit version?
    Stuart

Head to (better yet, copy the contents to a folder)
    Navigate to Apple \ Drivers \ Bootcamp64.msi
control click and select Compatibility Mode and choose "Vista"
You just have to force it a little.
May also get a warning from Windows that it isn't compatible or known to cause trouble (true) but install anyway.
AppleHFS feature can be buggy and lead to Bsod.
I keep that renamed and therefore disabled, use Paragon HFS or MacDrive8 instead, commercial but at least they work better.
Apple didn't 'bless' some of us with older EFI32 (trouble booting DVD and other issues) and even mid 2008 iMac had 64-bit ROM and processor at a time when MacBook, MacBook Pro, and Mac Pro all were on the "supported" list for Vista 64-bit, the iMac was not

  • How can I install bootcamp on Tiger 10.4.5

I knew bootcamp was built into Mac OS-X 10.5 or 10.6, but I'm using 10.4 and loose all the software I was downloaded, including the old bootcamp dmg file.
Any one can tell where I can get the bootcamp for 10.4?

I have run Windows 98 in a version of Parallels ( version 3 i think) on Tiger 10.4.11.
With the Intel Macs, you can run windows in a virtual machine. Folks are cloning their old windows to a Parallels virtual machine.
    Parallels:
    http://www.parallels.com/en/products/desktop/
& some catalog order places sell Parallels for 9.99 when you buy a mac. You can runs versions of Parallels on Mac OS 10.4.
With VMware Fusion, run the most demanding Mac and Windows applications side-by-side at maximum speeds without rebooting
    http://www.vmware.com/products/fusion/
    Don't miss the free VirtualBox.
"VirtualBox is a general-purpose full virtualizer for x86 hardware. " Runs Windows on Mac OS.

  • Can't get W-XP installed with ML10.8; nor can I install Bootcamp 2 or 3 ?!

    Hello everybody,
Searched the fora on the net; can't find my answers. Please help ??
Having an MBP late 2008 (unibody, intel, 2.4Ghz 4Gb) the old HD faded and I replaced it with new HD. Installed new Mountain Lion 10.8 on it.
I need my accounting software which is ... windows based, in fact it needs windows no later than XP. Sorry guys...
So Windows partition is required. The interface is Parallels Desktop 7, but could be replaced.
Meanwhile, I have created a partition for Windows, FAT (DOS) formatted through Disk Utility.
The Bootcamp installer on 10.8 (which is version 5) will definately only install Windows7. It will ask: need additional drivers? and: create partition to install Windows 7? (or: now I created a partition: delete partition?); one cannot leave any of the questions unchecked.
I do not have W-7 (I saw that W-7 has an addtional program that emulates XP so it could work). I have a legal copy of W-XP
I do not have W-XP installed yet; don't know how to do that. I thought to start the MBP, hold "C" and install W-XP but some people advised not to do this (although the boot CD of W-XP works just fine). This is the first problem.
Apple Support mentions to use Bootcamp 2. Can't find 2.0 but only upgrades to 2.1 and 2.2. So this is the second obstacle.
Discussion Boards tell that BC2 is on the install CD's of (snow) Leopard. I can't find on Leopard CD, other than having to install OS-X 10.5 ??? This is the third problem.
Besides, the Bootcamp 2 or 3 apps are EXE files. OS-X cannot handle EXE files. So I wonder how to install these? This is the fourth problem.
Parallels Dekstop could install W-XP, but not on the later versions that are required for Lion or Mountain Lion. Obstacle 5.
Please help to install W-XP !?!?
What are the steps required ???
I 'm starting to get desperate........

    Hi Bob,
Thanks for the advice. It succeeded.
The steps I made was to make a disk copy of my original Windows XP disk using Disk Utilty. Then I renamed the disk copy into .iso. I copied the ISO file to my usb flash drive.
Than I started Parallels 7, created a new VM, selected the correct drive to install from (the usb flash drive) and volia, it worked.
    Finally...
