Can't install clean 8.1pro on partition

After an ugly virus, I wiped my hdd with diskpart and tried to install win 8.1 pro using my msdn isos on a unetbootin created bootable usb. It boots fine, but once I click to install, I can't use my keyboard's usb slot to read the usb drive, so I end up switching back and forth. but when I get to the point where I need to select a partition, it says it can't be installed there 0x8030001. Normally this is a driver issue, but it won't find the drivers on the usb. I'm on business travel so pretty incapacitated by this.

How did you create the Bootcamp partition and how did you delete it in your attempts to install Windows?

    In this version, the default path is hard coded to install in
    /users/unison. However, if you do not have enough room on your root
    partition or choose to install it in another location, you can do so
    using a logical link. The installation guide explains this as well.
    <P>
    For example, suppose you want /users/unison, which must NOT already
    exist, to be logically linked to /var/opt/unison, which must exist.
    Then as root user:
    <P>
    <UL>
    <LI>
    Create the directory /users (if it does not already exist)
    <P>
    % mkdir /users
    <P>
    <LI>
    Create the logical link. The directory /users/unison must
    NOT exist before doing this.
    <P>
    % ln -s /var/opt/unison /users/unison
    </UL>
    <P>

    I want to install my original SnowLeopard (from the installation disc) to a partition I created in the now upgraded Mavericks OSX, How can I install it on the new partition?

    That's easy.
    2 methods:
    1. Change the Startup Disk in System Preferences, then restart:
    2. Hold down the "Option" key while starting or restarting the Mac. Then chosse the partition that you want to startup from.
    The 1st mehtod is the quickest, because you don't have the additional step of choosing the drive. Plus, whatever you have selected in System Preferences becomes the default startup drive.

  • Mid 2009 macbook pro (10.7.2)- can i install leopard and lion on partitions?

    Hello,
    I have just bought a refurbished macbook pro and want to install 10.5 leopard on a partition of the hard drive so that I can run my original software that I use on my 2008 Imac (eg Protools 7.4 which would cost hundreds to upgrade as protools 7.4 won't work with snow leopard and protools 8 that would work with snow leopard won't work with my original mbox so would have to buy a new mbox/protools!). The disc 10.5 (leopard) disc that came with my 2008 Imac doesn't work with my macbook pro but would another Macbook pro specific disc work?
    Thanks in advance!!
    Specs-
    15 INCH, MID 2009 MACBOOK PRO
    Processor  2.53 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    Memory  4 GB 1067 MHz DDR3
    Graphics  NVIDIA GeForce 9400M 256 MB
    Software  Mac OS X Lion 10.7.2 (11C74)

    That machine should have shipped with Leopard, so yes you can install Leopard on a separate partition. However, you will need the original install disk to do so...they are model specific, and you can only obtain these through AppleCare. Call them & see if they will ship you such...there will be a small fee.

  • [Solved]Can I install arch without a swap partition ?

    I only have one primary partition free to install arch, with 3 primary partition and 1 extend partition, I have no other choice except install without swap partition.
    Is there any suggestion? I will try it until I get a U storage to write .img in.

    Sure, it's perfectly possible to use any linux system without swap. including arch.
    There are 2 ways to do disk partitioning in /arch/setup:
    1) autoprepare. with this method, you pick a disk (a disk you want to use entirely). you will be asked some questions (including how big swap should be). this method will create the partitions with the sizes you mention (/boot, swap, / and /home) optionally you can add additional fs'es
    2) manual. the installer can launch cfdisk for you if you need to alter partitions (if you want this), and after that you can define pretty much your stuff the way you like it (eg no swap) iirc. i'm not 100% sure though.
    Frankly I don't understand why you say "I have no choice", if you don't have enough partitions, you can always create additional ones.

  • Can't install windows 8 on gpt partition

    Hi, my laptop came pre-installed with windows 8.1 and it did't allow Fifa13 to run, then I deleted the partition and tried to install windows 7 ultimate because it allows Fifa 13 to run. When installing windows 8.1 it displays "windows
    cannot be installed on this disk. The selected disk is of the GPT partition style."
    Now my laptop is not starting at all. Please help me as I really need to use my pc.
    Thank you.
    Joseph Shobede

    The question is a bit ambiguos. Kindly confirm do you see the error message while installing Windows 7 or Windows 8.1?
    If you're instaling Windows 7 and seeing the error, you need to perform the following:
    Turn off the PC, and put in the Windows installation DVD or USB key.
    Boot the PC to the DVD or USB key in Legacy BIOS mode (or non-UEFI). For more info, see Boot
    to UEFI Mode or Legacy BIOS mode.
    From inside Windows Setup, press Shift+F10 to open a command prompt window.
    Open the diskpart tool:
    diskpart
    Identify the drive to reformat:
    list disk
    Select the drive, and reformat it:
    select disk <disk number>
    clean
    convert mbr
    exit
    Close the command prompt window.
    Continue the Windows Setup installation.
    When choosing an installation type, select Custom. The drive will appear as a single area of unallocated space.
    Select the unallocated space and click Next. Windows begins the installation.

  • Can't install windows to mac osx partition!

    Hi, I had 2 partitions in my macbook pro, 1 for mac osx and 1 for bootcamp, and I wanted to install mac osx to a firewire hard drive, but i messed it up and installed mac osx OVER the bootcamp partition.
    Now I have 2 mac osx partitions on the macbook pro, and can't reformat the partition to reinstall bootcamp.
    Is there a way to reformat that partition and reinstall bootcamp (windows)?
    Thanks in advance!

    That is why backup should be #1 and last.
    You have to return (ie, reformat) your drive probably back to one partition with just Mac OS before you can use Boot Camp Assistant.
    While at it, just clone one of your Mac OS volumes over to FW now. Later, with Windows installed, make an image of that (WinClone) while in Mac OS to your FW drive also.

  • Can I install Lion on a fresh partition, and keep SL as is?

    Hi-
    I have multiple programs that I need to keep Snow Leopard for, and I have other things that are really pushing me to Lion. Here is what I'm thinking of doing-
    Add a partition to my internal drive (I have a Macbook Pro) called "Lion". This will be 100 Gigs.
    Make a bootable DVD of the Lion Installer.
    Install Lion onto the new "Lion" partition.
    Will I be able to boot either Snow Leopard or Lion, depending what I have need for?
    Will this affect my Bootcamp install of Windows XP?
    Will this affect my current Snow Leopard installation?
    I have everything backed up twice just in case, but want to make sure I'm not heading down a path with no good ending. Thanks!

    Sure.  Several have done that so they can slowly cofigure Lion while keeping their configured SL.
    You have backups, which is good.
    Follow this advice to store the Lion download and save future re-downloads: https://discussions.apple.com/message/16639520#16639520
    But BootCamp/OS will get twitchy if the internal disk has a partition added.  I would sugest an external disk for your Lion.

  • Can't install snow leopard on partition after upgrading to lion

    I rushed out too early to install Lion via Apple Apps store.  Now, I realize that Rosetta is gone and so are my options to use older apps.  As I was reading on the web and Apple Support, I have tried various things and get a window saying that I can't install snow leopard.
    I have never partition my hard drive, but using disk utility I created a partition called "Snow Leopard."  It divided my HD in half which is okay.  I closed the disk utility window, rebooted holding down the "C" key, and saw the OS X Install DVD.  When I select it a window pops up saying, "You can't use this version of the appl inst Mac OS X with this version of Mac OS X.  You have installed Mac OS X 23.1.1."
    Before downloading lion, I made a backup of my existing HD using Time Machine to an external HD.  When I open up a saved version dated a month ago, I see that the applications that were working in snow leopard now have the icon circle saying that it is not supported by lion.  This is strange since I used Time Machine to back up my HD, then turned off the app before downloading lion.  Even older versions saved on the external HD show the circle.
    I read about lion and the "Recovery HD," but when I hold down the Command-R key nothing happens when I restart my computer.  It also talks about using the option key but that does not work.  It talks about reinstalling lion using this system, but I don't see it working.
    How can I install snow leopard on my new partition, then I would go to "Software Updates," to get the latest version, or use one of the versions on my external HD to have both operating system.
    Thanks,
    DaisyMay

    Hi Scottiemn,
    As I was trying different things to make a partition on my HD, I made notes as to what I did, and I finally got it to work.  I will try to explain what I did.
    Before installing “Lion,” I backed up Snow Leopard using Time Machine to my external Seagate HD.  I installed “Lion,” and found out that I could not use some of my old apps, so I did the following.
    Since I am running “Lion,” I opened up disk utility and selected my MacHD (1TB), then I selected partition, and it showed “Macintosh HD” under the partition information name.  I believe I selected the plus, + and it divided my HD space in half, and I named it Snow Leopard.
    I then installed the Snow Leopard DVD, and restarted my computer holding down the “C” key, I held it down for about 30 seconds or more and then took my finger off of the key.  As I waited I finally saw that I was on the install DVD, and on the top menu bar I saw “Utilities.”  I had my external Seagate HD mounted on my desk top before I restarted my computer, I selected the “Utilities,” on the menu bar and it gave me the option to back up from Time Machine, I selected my external Seagate HD to the newly created partition I named Snow Leopard and I said “Yes.”  I followed the instructions and after it was done, I went to the menu bar and selected System Preferences, System, Startup Disk, and selected to start up with Snow Leopard.  On my desktop, I can see two Hard Drives, one is Macintosh HD with “Lion,” and the other is Snow Leopard.
    Then, I started up my computer and I was on the Snow Leopard partition and I saw all of my apps working.  I then went back to the menu bar and selected System Preferences, System, Startup Disk, and selected to start up with “Lion,” and restarted my computer and I was running “Lion.”
    I am not sure why I was not able to use the DVD of SL before, but somehow I got it to work, and I hope that I have explained what I did above.
    One thing, when I installed “Lion,” from the app store, I did not make a bootable DVD of the application.  I went back to the app store and downloaded “Lion” again and kept it in the dock until I got Snow Leopard to work.  I burned a DVD of “Lion,” and so I have a backup of it.
    Since my Seagate HD has only 250 GB of space and it is an EIDE HD 7,200 rpm using an OWC Mercury Elite FW400/USB2 with the Oxford chipset 911 enclosure which I bought in 2008, I decided that since I now have my 27 inch iMac quad core i5 with 1TB that I needed a larger hard drive.
    I researched the web and decided to go back to OWC and just bought a 2.0TB OWC Mercury Elite Pro “Quad Interface” 64MB with eSATA/FW800/FW400/USB2.0 with 7,200 rpm speed for $219.00.  I partitioned it for Time Machine, and Carbon Copy Cloner.
    I ran Time Machine, and both partitions “Lion, and Snow Leopard” are on the Time Machine partition and both HD’s are under the Carbon Copy Cloner.
    I am self taught on my many iMac’s over the years, and I go to the forums to ask questions and follow the helpful hints to resolve my problems.  I carefully try different things and write down what I did so I don’t repeat things.
    I hope that I have explained what I did, and hopefully it will work for you.
    When I want to run SL, I select in the System Preferences to start up from that disk, when I want to run Lion, I go back and select that and start up my computer running Lion.
    Since I have many old apps that Rosetta uses to open them up in SL I wanted to keep that operating system.  I will go back now that I have everything working and see if I really need them.  I won’t rush to remove my SL partition that I created, but in time if I don’t need the older apps then I may clean out my system and just run Lion.
    I run Lion now all of the time, but when I need to go back to SL, I now have the option.
    Good Luck,
    DaisyMay

  • Lion Clean Install - No Disc Required - Recovery Partition Solution

    There is a way to run a Lion clean install without unpacking the installation onto a new disc or thumb drive.  It can be accomplished via a slightly longer, two-step upgrade process, which requires wiping your hard drive after you've upgraded to Lion.  You must be able to connect to the internet for this option to work, as it will require downloading the install package again.
    As always, be sure to back up your data before performing any sort of wipe of your hard drive.
    STEP 1 - Initial Upgrade
    Perform a normal Lion upgrade through the App Store.  This will install Lion on top of your current configuration.  It will also create a Recovery Partition, which is a new feature of the Lion OS.  It is this Recovery Partition that you will use to perform the clean install.
    STEP 2 - Wipe and Clean Install
    Restart your computer into Recovery mode.  This can be done by either holding down CMD-r during boot up, or holding down the Option key during bootup and selecting to boot from the Recovery partition.
    Select the Disk Utility option from the main menu.  Here you can select the main partition, click on the Erase tab at the top, and completely erase the partition.  Once you've done this, quit Disk Utility Option, and you will return to the main menu.
    Select the Lion Installation option.  It will ask you to connect to the internet if you have not done so already (if wireless, you can do this via the Wi-Fi icon in the top right corner).  It will also ask you to input your Apple ID login and password in order to verify that you've already purchased the software.  The installation will take as long as it requires to download the package again.  Once downloaded and installed, Lion will walk you through initial set up.
    This solution worked for me, but I make no guarantees that it will work for others.

    I've created a boot disk (several actually) following the methods outlined in this guide.
    http://www.eggfreckles.net/tech/burning-a-lion-boot-disc/
    I've also saved the installer dmg in several backup locations so it can be burned again fresh or transfered to bootable USB thumb drives.
    The Lion install disk boots up and operates just like the Recovery Partition (Disk Utiltiy and all) with one giant benefit, you don't have to log into the MacAppStore with all it's complications or require a lenghtly internet download to install Lion.
    So you won't see this annoying screen and have to wait a few hours if the servers are overloaded.
    The boot disk also installs considerably faster. Two giant benefits actually.
    Also  once Lion is installed, Bootcamp can be used to partition the drive, then the Recovery Partiton > Disk Utiltiy used to change the BOOTCAMP partition to HFS+ journaled and then 10.6 can be installed or cloned from a external drive onto the BOOTCAMP partition.
    Dual boot Snow/Lion is possible with a large enough boot drive.

  • Installed 10.6 on a partition, can't migrate my iTunes logins.

    Hi,
    I recently installed 10.6 on a partition, and wanted to keep it a clean install rather than using the migration assistant. I copied over the iTunes library with no problem, however have found that it has not copied my Authorizations. Of course I have my own shop login, but half of my library was shared with my ex, and I can't for the life of me remember her password.
    Does anyone know where this information is stored, so that I can copy it over in a simple manner?
    Thanks,
    T

    For any one else trying to do this, I did find a help file here on the Apple site. What you need to do is GO to /Users/Shared/SC info, and copy this folder, SC info, and its contents to the same location on your new partition.
    Fundamentally I never understood why iTunes did not recognise the fact that it was the same mahine, but now it is solved.

  • "GUID partition table scheme"  Can't install snow leopard on my mbp.

    I have a mbp that is partitioned as half mac, half XP.  I put in the snow leopard CD and came up with an error that said I could not istall snow leopard because my partition did not fit the "GUID partition table scheme".  I followed the menues to the partition section of the disk utility.  From there, I don't know what to do.  I can't click on the "options" button to change to the GUILD thing.  Do I need to repartition my entire mbp?  Will this erase my other partition?  And will it delete all my data?  Any suggestions on what to do???

    GUID partition table (GPT) or map is a set of instructions at the very begining of a storage drive to tell the hardware what partitions and formats are where on the drive.
    A Intel Mac now requires a GPT to boot OS X as it uses EFI (Extensible Firmware Interface) which is a software firmware in a hidden EFI partition on the boot drive designed originally for copy protection by Intel. EFI loads into memory before OS X  does, which can be seen if you have verbose mode activated upon boot time.
    Setting up the boot drive with a GUID Partiton table WILL require backing up of all data off the machine and a complete erasure of ALL partitions on the drive, which includes ALL data, programs, operating systems and files not backed up off the machine previously.
    Since a partition map is basically road directions, when it's destroyed so does go the partitions.
    Also since you will be fresh installing 10.6, your free iLife won't tag along,, however you can erase/install 10.5 first then upgrade to 10.6 (no BootCamp) and that shoudl work.
    Unfortunatly Mac's only now support Windows 7 in Bootcamp, however Windows 7 Pro (and above) will run XP programs natively or via free virtual machine XP downloaded from Microsoft, however since it's really not native, 3D games etc likely won't run very well.
    If your not familiar or willing to take a chance, then I suggest you have someone else upgrade that machine.

    No, you can't partition a Time Capsule's internal HD.  Both partitions will back up to the same sparse bundle. keeping the backups for each partition separate.
    Time Machine will not take the two OSX partitions as two different computers, but for best results, exclude the Snow Leopard drive from backups on the Lion partition, and exclude the Lion partition from backups on the Snow Leopard partition.
    There may be some files on the Lion partition that Time Machine on Snow Leopard won't like, among other things.  See #10 in  Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions for details.
