Can't install iTunes - "not a valid Win32 application"

I know this is a 'known problem'. I have carefully tried every fix in the troubleshooting page to load iTunes but continue to get this error message when trying to install. Is this the only approach? Would loading a new OS (like Windows 7) be a fix?

This suggests the iTunes installer is getting damaged during download.
First try downloading the iTunes installer using a different browser.
You should be downloading from here:
http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/
If that doesn't work, the simplest thing is to get a friend tio download the installer for you and put it on a USB memory stick. Preferably a copy that you know works.
Are you using a USB Dongle connected to a wireless broadband provider – truncated downloads seem to be common with this setup.

  • Can't update/install itunes- 'not a valid win32 application' PLEASE HELP

    Hi Guys,
I'm having some serious problems with installing iTunes on my laptop. I have searched and searched the internet and can not find any solution to my problem. I am receiving the error "itunes is not a valid win32 application' after the program finishes downloading. Sometimes however it will just stop in the middle of the download. I use a SONY VAIO VGN-NW25GF which was only purchased last year. It uses windows 7. I had trouble downloading itunes to begin with though eventually it worked, however since the new 10.1 update has been available ive been attempting to update it almost every time i use itunes. Each and every time it fails and i've had enough as i need to update my iphone software. I’ve since uninstalled both itunes and quicktime hoping it will reinstall properly. But nothing, the same problem is occurring and now i have no itunes program!
I've tried all the solutions online about deleting browing history/temp folder and any itunessetup.exe/quicktimesetup.exe files and nothing works. I've also tried downloading using a different browser and still nothing. I’ve done a virus scan, disk cleanup and disk defragment and NOTHIGN is working. I'm starting to get quite frustrated as i need this program for my iphone. Any help would be greatly appreciated!! Thanks 

  • Can't install Itunes - not a valid short file name

I tried to upgrade, but it failed and locked up, so I tried to uninstall Itunes and reinstall again.
now when I download, or try to reinstall the new program I first get a message that says:
"Itunes resources is not a valid file name" and then when I hit OK, it gives me "fatal error during installation."
It will not allow me to uninstall the itunes that it won't let me install.
It's a vicious loop and I must have my itunes back!!

This suggests the iTunes installer is getting damaged during download.

  • "not a valid Win32 application" message when trying to install iTunes 7.0

I have downloaded the new iTunes 7.0 setup file. When I click on the icon on my desktop, I get the message, " C:____\iTunesSetup.exe is not a valid Win32 application".
This problem doesn't seem to be specifically addressed in the troubleshooting suggestions on this website. Does any one have any suggestions on what I can do to resolve this problem? I've tried uninstalling older versions of iTunes and Quicktime, and re-downloaded new software package, but problem continues.

After using the Windows Installer clean up tool and removing the iTunes 7.0.7.16 install file I was able to update to 7.0.2

  • Trouble installing itunes -itunessetup.exe is not a valid win32 application

I have trouble installing itunes. The following message appears: C:\Documents and Setting\Owner\My Documents\ itunsSetup.exe is not a valid Win32 application. I tried the following but I still have problems: remove previous version of itunes, remove quicktime, install again quicktime as a standalone, delete temporary files, restart computer, delete all itunes related files.

    Finally an answer from Apple:
    Dear Stefanie,
I understand that you're receiving an error when trying to open the iTunes
installer that you downloaded. I'd like to try to help you resolve this issue.
It appears that your web browser may be truncating your download of the iTunes
software. I urge you to try using a different web browser to download iTunes. If
this is not possible, you can also try using a different computer to download
iTunes, and then transfer the iTunes installer file (iTunesSetup.exe) to your
original computer and open it from there.
Some transfer options would include using your iPod to transfer the file via
hard disk mode, using a local network, burning a CD, using an external hard disk
or a USB drive, or even sending the file to yourself via email or over an
    instant messaging network.
I hope this information helps to resolve your iTunes installation issue. If it
does not and you still need assistance from Apple, you will need to call Apple
technical support (there may be a fee associated with the call). To find the
    appropriate phone number, please visit:

  • Unable to open itunes, "itunessetup(1).exe is not a valid Win32 application

Forgive me if I'm an idiot. I bought my husband an Ipod Shuffle for Xmas. I spent hours downloading the latest itunes only to have an error message pop up at the end that itunessetup.exe is not a valid Win32 application.
I read another post about people having better luck with older versions of itunes and downloaded 6.0 with no problem, saved a cd on it, and then when i plugged in the Shuffle it gave me an error message that said it would only work with the newest version of itunes. The apple website recognizes that I have already downloaded the new version, but nothing will happen other than the error message. Husband is already saying I should just sell his new shuffle, and I'm feeling stupid that I can't figure it out...can anyone help please? Thank you.

THis is a common problem for people downloading itunes on dail up and/or with corrupt versions in there temp folders.
If you are on dail up, you need to first download and install whats called a "Download manager". These programs will usually make sure the download goes correctly, will start the download where it stops should the connection be lost, and can usually be set to re dail to your internet provider if the connection is lost (Handy for late nights when you goto bed and leave a big download going). Theres quite afew different ones out there usually free, Id recommend looking around on the net and get the one you feel comfortable with using.
THen you can try the download again.
Also try emptying your temp folder in your browser

  • New Vista machine says iTunes is not a valid Win32 application

I am trying to install iTunes on my new Sony Vaio running Vista. When I try to install iTunes, it says iTunes is not a valid Win32 application. Can anyone help me...I have no idea what this means or what to do. Thanks!

After being on hold forever and then told it would cost me $30 for apple to troubleshoot, the lady at apple told me that since there are so many people trying to download itunes 7, the server is jammed up and to keep trying. so, i did. After about 10 attempts it downloaded successfully. So keep trying or try late at night when so many people aren't clogging up apple's server. Hope this helps.

  • Cant install QuickTimeInstaller.exe or iTunesSetup.exe and IE9 SmartScreen Filter reports the program is not commonly downloaded and is not signed by its author. I run it anyway, but "is not a valid Win32 application". Tried Firefox

I followed the Article TS1406 (recommended solution) on both a Windows 7 OS and an Apple OS, tried Safari and Firefox, tried using 'Upgrade ITunes' button on my old version of iTunes, then uninstalled ITunes, then QuickTime, now can't install either because I'm getting the same error message when I download and choose Run > 'not a valid Win32 application'. On IE9, the SmartScreen Filter returns a warning that the file could harm my computer because it is not commonly downloaded. I tried downloading it from other internet sources, but that's risky, and anyway, it's still causing the same errors. What else is there to try? If I can't find a solution, I can't use my new Iphone 5

It's still pointing to the installers getting damaged during the downloads.
Perhaps try downloading and saving a copy of the installer to a different PC. (If you're on a 32-bit Windows system, try to download on a different 32-bit Windows system.) Copy the iTunesSetup.exe installer to an external hard-drive, or a large-enough thumb drive or burn it to a CD-R. Carry the installer back to your PC, copy the installer to your hard drive. (Don't run the install from the ExHD, thumb or CD-R.) Start the install by doubleclicking the iTunesSetup.exe file.

  • 'mymusic/itunes.exe is not a valid win32 application' **help needed** !!

As i double click on the desktop shortcut to open itunes, i get an error message which is the following: 'mymusic/itunes.exe is not a valid win32 application'. I now cannot access itunes or any of my media/music!
Background... I updated to the latest version of itunes, downloaded a few apps and music and re-synced my iPod touch. I then clicked on itunes store, and itunes just closed down and would then not reopen and now repeats the error message everytime.
I have attempted to repair itunes by downloading the setup software again, i have also tried removing itunes from my pc with the intention to re-install all over again, however it wont let me uninstall itunes either!!
    Anybody have any suggestions?

Can you open iTunes if you go to Program Files\iTunes and double click on iTunes.exe.
If so, you can create a new short cut by right clicking on iTunes.exe and selecting Send to>>Desk top(create short cut)

  • Everytime I try to download itunes I get a message that says its not a valid Win32 application

Everytime I try to download iTunes on my computer it says it is not a valid Win32 application. Also, when i plug in my ipod, iPhone4S, or my iPhone5, they show up as cameras instead of phones and iPod. How can fix these issues?

  • Error when installing VMM - %1 is not a valid Win32 application

    Hi all
I'm attemping an install of SCVMM and despite installing all prerequisites I'm faced with the following when I launch the installer/disc and click 'Install':
"Error starting the Virtual Machine Manager Setup Wizard. %1 is not a valid Win32 application"
this error is the proceeded with another:
"Microsoft Visual C++ 2010 Redistributable was not successfully installed. The selected Virtual Machine Manager feature cannot be installed without this prerequisite. Retry setup or manually install Visual C++ 2010 Redistributable
    from Microsoft Download Center."
The latter package is already installed and I have re-downloaded and re-installed as well to no avail. All .Net packages are installed too.
I'm running a Windows Server 2012 R2 x64 virtual machine in a HyperV host (HyperV Server 2012) and have navigated the disc and launched the "SetupVMM.exe" located in the amd64 directory as I realise the above Win32 error points to a x86 application
    - still no joy, the same errors!
I have tried the installer in a VMWare 2012 server with the same error and on a physical Windows 7 machine again same error so this makes me think I'm either missing something basic or have overlooked something seems the environment doesn't seem to make
a difference (although obviously not attempted a x86 environment but SCVMM is listed as x86 or x64).
This is for a lab test and personal experience before production so I realise running SCVMM within a virtual machine that is hosted on the same hypervisor isn't good practice - but it's a start :)
Thanks in advance for any help you can give me.

Are you installing directly from the ISO? If so, you can try with a new ISO in case this is broken. Also make sure your machine is joined to the domain and that you are executing the setup in the context of a local administrator.
Eventually, try to copy the ISO to local disk and run setup from there.
