Can't install iTunes on C drive because it crashed on F drive

I have an external hard drive that I added around Christmas time. I am using Windows XP. I made a HUGE mistake a few days ago. I was using iTunes (which I'd switched to my new "F" drive to free up space on my "C" drive) when it froze on me. The external hard drive started to get hot and in my haste to close iTunes I accidentally chose to end the process (NOT the application) using Task Manager. After doing that my computer now no longer seems to recognize my external hard drive at all (except as a USB "mass storage device") and even though I've deleted everything I can find that's related to iTunes and Quicktime on my C-drive I still can't download iTunes! I get the error message: "Invalid Drive: F:\" I have tried everything I can think of, short of taking the stupid ext. hard drive to a professional that I'll have to PAY (which I really HATE to do since I've always been able to figure things out using advice found on the internet). I've tried using the Device Manager, I've tried using Computer Management. I've tried all the unplugging, replugging, and restarting my computer. What I really want is for someone to tell me how to get around this "Invalid Drive: F:\" problem. We have thousands of songs and use iTunes constantly. I need to find a way to bring it back!!! Please help if you can! Thanks

    Hi JDB38;
There is no such thing as an Intel G5. It is either one or the other but never both. An Intel tower is a Mac Pro. A G5 is a tower with a PowerPC processor in it. So which do you have?

Ok you can only install itunes on C drive, its hard coded. You can store your library anyplace. Once itunes is installed you need to change the library location in the Edit > Preferences dialog.
    Hope that helps.

Can i install itunes to a portable hard drive? Also can I have more than one itunes library?
I have a very large cd collections and dont want to put all the files on my mac hard drive, would like to install or keepmthe cd on a portable drive

That was timely.  I had the same question (new MBP with two drives) and you solved my question.  Thank you.  It works the same way you change Aperture Libraries, so it makes sense and is easy to remember.

  • Can I install itunes on a network drive?

Can I install itunes on a network drive? How?

Your virtual drive still needs a physical drive to live on. You can move your iTunes library to any drive big enough to hold it, e.g. an additional internal drive, an external drive, a network share, it's up to you. What you can't do is put a quart into a pint pot.

  • Can I Install iTunes on the D: Drive?

Can I Install iTunes on the D: Drive? I looks like iTunes does not give me that option to do this.
    Thanks

It's like any other program installation - during the install it says where it is going to put the program.
    The default is C:\Program Files\iTunes.
You have to say "No" or "browse" or something like that, and tell it the D: drive instead.

I am installing i Cloud on a Windows 7  but do not have an option of putting it any where but C drive. How can i install it to another drive? I keeep my operating system on a small partition and install all my programs to a larger partition.

Install it normally, launch it with the Shift key held down, and create a new library on the desired drive. The iTunes application contains system components and therefore must be installed on the drive or partition containing the OS.

I pulled my brains out trying to figure this bug out and I may have a solution for you.
All of it installed fine in my desktop, but a friend's laptop got the error you mentioned on quicktime, itunes, flash, officeXP and about anything else I tried to load for him.
If you look in: C:\documents and settings\<username>\Local Settings\Temp there will be an iTunes install log...open it in Notepad and see if it isn't exiting with a 1619 error while running msiexec.exe
If this is the case, this fix should work for you.
Seems some configurations of XP (and possibly Vista) aren't allowing full administrator rights to the account you set up when you installed XP (even though User Editor says you do have those rights.)
I read 2 MS articles and turned off simple file sharing, then gave ownership of the entire C: drive to the administrator. Logged the admin account off, logged his "admin" account in, and then gave rights to his personal directory to his account (c:\docs and settings\<username>)
Once I did that, every install that had previously errored out performed flawlessly.
    The MS articles in question:
    http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=316309 (1619 error)
    and
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=308419 (how to set special permissions)
    Hope this helps!

    1
    Close all iWork applications
    2
Uninstall Keynote; this must be done with an application remover tool to delete the installation properly. Appcleaner is known to work correctly for this purpose, it is free and can be downloaded from here: Appcleaner Download
    3
    empty the trash
    4
shutdown the Mac and restart. After the start up chime, hold down the shift key until the apple logo appears
let the Mac complete the start up procedure completely, it will take longer than usual as the hard drive is being repaired
    5
Reinstall Keynote by logging into the Mac App Store using download / install

  • Can you install Tiger onto a drive with data?

    Hello,
I would like to ask if you can install Tiger onto a hard drive that already has data files on it. I have a 250 GIG hard drive and it already has 10 GIGs of data on it. Can I install Tiger on this drive or might it corrupt my files?
Its a long story but here is a quick summary of why I am attempting to do this:
I have a 350 MHz Blue and white G3 (rev 1) with two hard drives: the original 12 GIG ATA drive and a 250 GIG SATA drive (internal) connected with a 1S2 Seritek SATA controller.
My 250 GIG drive has two partitions but only one is available to Tiger. You see, by accident I originally formatted my 250 GIG drive with an extremely small partion (32 Megs). I meant to type "30 GIGs" and by accident I typed "30 Megs". Oops That was supposed to be my OSX 10.4 volume. Its too late now - its too small. So I only have two choices for a place for TIger: my 12 GIG drive or the other partition of my 250 GIG drive. I am reluctant to choose my 12 GIG drive because it already has an older OS on it (OS 8.6).
I was concerned about installing TIger on the data partition of the 250 GIG drive because that is where all my valuable data files are - 10 Gigs of data. I don't want to risk scrambling this data in any way.
Is it safe to install Tiger onto this partition with my data files? Or is the possibility it might do something to my data.
Its only a temporary install so that I could burn my 10 GIGs of data files to DVD for backup and then I will start all over again and erase the entire hard drive and reinstall from scratch onto the 250 GIG drive once my data files are safely backed up. (I will not partition the 250 GIG drive i nthe final install - it will be one big partition.)
    One other question:
When you format a disk in Tiger are there options to "low level format" or "zero all data" or will just a straight "erase" do the job sufficiently? I bought my 250 GIG Hitachi SATA drive new and so I am not sure if it worth the time to re-erase it with "zero all data" (if that is an option in the Tiger Disk Utility). What is the best formatting option to prepare this drive in the most beneficial for Tiger?
    Thanks for any suggestions.

    Thanks scb and Jeff,
Jeff, you have me thinking now. I think I will be safe and try another idea. I have a 4 GIG internal SCSI drive I could use to backup my data in 4 GIG sections at a time via my Adaptec 2430 SCSI card. I could then move this hard drive over to my other G3 onto its 40 GIG hard drive. This would be done three times to take off all my data and essentially provide a backup before I install Tiger. Good idea. You are right. It is better to play it safe.
By the way 8.6 can handle HFS+. And yes, I should eventually buy an external drive solution - probably an enclosure. I saw one called "coolmax" [1]. It could hold a SATA drive and it had USB, firewire and also an external SATA port.
And also Jef thanks for the info about formatting drives. I am glad to hear it is not important to zero all data if you don't have to. I am not concerned about havig anything to hide and so yes, I will just click "format" - that should be fine. Zero all data takes such a long time and I would rather avoid using it if I don't need this feature. Thanks for the advice.
Thanks for the new safer direction.

  • Can't install iTunes 10 due to Bonjour

I need help finding and deleting Bonjour from my desktop. I uninstalled iTunes 9. When I try to reinstall iTunes 10 I get an error message that says "The older version of Bonjour cannot be removed. Contact your technical support group". I have searched for Bonjour throughout my computer and deleted it every place I could including the REGEDIT. When I try to remove Bonjour from the list of programs through the Control Panel I get an error message that says "The feature you are trying to use is on a network resource that is not available". I can no longer use my iPod Touch because I can't install iTunes on my computer. This makes me very sad.

When I try to remove Bonjour from the list of programs through the Control Panel I get an error message that says "The feature you are trying to use is on a network resource that is not available".
These sorts of msi-related troubles have gotten more complicated to deal with ever since Microsoft pulled the Windows Installer CleanUp utility from their Download Center on June 25. First we have to find a copy of the utility.
Let's try Googling. (Best not to use Bing, I think.) Look for a working download site for at least version 3.0 of the Windows Installer CleanUp utility. After downloading the utility installer file (msicuu2.exe), scan the file for malware, just in case. (I use the free version of Malwarebytes AntiMalware to do single-file scans for that.)
If the file is clean, to install the utility, doubleclick the msicuu2.exe file you've downloaded.
Now run the utility ("Start > All Programs > Windows Install Clean Up"). In the list of programs that appears in CleanUp, select any BonJour entries and click "Remove".
Quit out of CleanUp, restart the PC and try installing iTunes again. Does the install go through properly this time?
(If you do find a clean download site for the correct version of CleanUp, please don't tell me where it is. Without wishing to sound paranoid (although I grant it does sound paranoid), there is a non-zero chance that posting links to download locations for the utility here at Discussions leads to that download location being shut down.)

  • Can't install iTunes due to Quicktime failing to install

I'm on Vista (sad face) and over the past couple months iTunes has worked on and off...working and then I get an error saying "iTunes has stopped working" and then I have to mess with everything uninstalling/installing to get it working again.
However last week, when it happened I uninstalled iTunes and then attempted to uninstall Quicktime but it would not remove Quicktime off the list even after restarts. Then I ran the newest iTunes + Quicktime installer and it just goes until it gives me and error saying "The installer encountered errors before the requested operation for Quicktime could be compleated" and takes me to the complete box saying try again later. So the problem is with Quicktime because it won't uninstall/install and thus I can not install iTunes.
I have tried using the stand-alone Quicktime installer and have gotten the same error. I have also tried Apple Software Updater and no dice. I am getting very frustrated nothing seems to work and I need to update my iPod! Please help!
    Thanks!

+I finally got QuickTime uninstalled (it wouldn't give me errors uninstalling, it just wouldn't uninstall) via Windows CleanUp Utility.+
After you used CleanUp, did you manually remove any leftover QuickTime program files?
If not, let's run through a CleanUp routine again.
Run CleanUp and remove the QuickTime entry.
    1. On the Start menu, click Computer.
    2. In Computer, open Local Disk.
    3. Open Program Files.
    4. Right-click on the QuickTime folder and click Delete from the shortcut menu.
    5. Navigate to C:\Windows\system32\.
    6. Remove the files QuickTime.qts and QuicktimeVR.qtx. (If “Hide filename extensions for known file types” is enabled on the PC, then those two files will appear as “QuickTime” and QuickTimeVR”.)
    7. Restart your computer.
Next, we'll try to get a fresh copy of QuickTime into your PC by doing a repair install of itunes.
Switch off antivirus and antispyware applications prior to the repair install.
Go into "Uninstall a program" in your Control Panel (assuming here that you don't have Classic View selected) and select itunes. click "Repair" up at the top of the control panel screen.
If the repair install goes through okay, restart the PC and try launching itunes again. Does it launch properly now?
