Can't install mpkg files anymore

I'm having a problem installing mpkg files - specifically, the newest ipod update.
I downloaded the newest ipod updater file, clicked on the mpkg file to try and install it, and a message popped up indicating that it could not find the program to install mpkg files, and prompted me to choose an application with which to open it.
I did some hunting and research online and found that the Utilities folder should have an installer for this, which would automatically open and install mpkg files. This is the Utilities folder where all of my ipod updaters have previously been installed. However, said utilities folder is no longer anywhere on my computer and I'm not sure what happened to it, and whether this is even the problem causing me to be unable to install mpkg files at all. I'm wondering if maybe I accidentally deleted the Utilities folder. I started to try to re-install the software that came bundled with my operating system, but when I tried to do that I got the same "no program identified with which to install mpkg files."
Is this inability to install mpkg files really a problem caused by not having my utilities folder anymore? If so, is there any way to re-install the utilities folder without completely re-installing the operating system? If it's not a result of not having a utilities folder, any ideas?
Thanks for any recommendation!

Hi, Sarah -
You would need to use Installer.app to open these files.
- Do a search on your machine to look for Installer.app or Disk Utility or any other application that exists in your Utilities folder to be sure that the folder wasn't simply moved. If it was moved, put it back in your Applications folder.
- If you find that the Utilities folder is completely gone, try downloading an application called Pacifist from charlessoft.com. Follow the instructions that come with Pacifist to learn how to find and install the necessary files that make up the apps in your Utilities folder.
- Here is a picture of the OS X-installed items in my Utilities folder, which may help you figure out which apps need to be installed. You may or may not have or need some of these items, incl. AirPort Client Monitor, AirPort Management Utility, Launch Services Database Rebuild.app, etc.:
- After you have reinstalled the files, download and install the 10.4.3 Combo Updater so that what you have installed using Pacifist will be brought up to the current version.
Good luck!

Installation Failed! The installer can't install some files in "/". Contact the software manufacturer for assistance.
I first received this message when trying to upgrade Pro Tools from 8.0 to 8.0.1 a prerelease for snow leopard. I tried numerous things such as repairing permissions, as well as some pro tools specific things and to no avail. Still got the same error message.
So then I tried completely uninstalling and deleting all things pro tools from my computer. After a clean uninstall and removing all traces of pro tools I proceeded to try and re-install pro tools from my pro tools 8 disk. About a minute into the process I get the EXACT same error message.
I know this issue has been going on since even before snow leopard. I really need to get pro tools installed and running again or at least be able to get the program installed. I've isolated pro tools out of the mix because its been several different installers and even an installer from a dvd. I know this is a Snow Leopard or plain OS based problem. I have repaired permissions, created a brand new user, wiped clean and started over. I don't know anything else to do. PLEASE HELP???!!!

Hi Dean@mac & welcome to the forums...
Any specifics why it wants to install to / instead of Applications, as an example?
    Seen these threads yet?
    http://discussions.apple.com/search.jspa?search=Go&q=pro+tools
One thing to help investigate the issue is to create a new user just for testing that is stock with no add-on's etc., then login there and try to install. If it works there you can bet there is something unique to your original account that is borking that install - otherwise the issue is most likely global to your system and you might be out of luck until/unless a reportedly qualified version becomes available, etc.
    Good luck in any case.

  • Can't edit any files anymore - DTR is grayout in NWDS

    Hi Experts,
For some reason I can't edit any files anymore, i.e. when right click on order.jsp, DTR is grayout. Seems like it happened after I reinstalled NWDS and reimported projects. I tried Sync sources, it did not help.
    Any suggestions / advises?
    Thanks, Jin

    Hi,
Right now do you have any open activities? If so, is it on the same jsp file?
If you have a open activity, obviously you will not edit option for the same file again.
If that is not the case, there might be an update in your track. You need to perform "Update Configuration" on your track. go to Inactive Dc's -> Right click on your track and select "Update Configuration".
You can also try, Closing and re opening the NWDS and logging in to NWDI again.
    Hope this helps!

    Jaya.

  • Can we install AIR files on Android?

Can we install AIR file on an Android device with AIR runtime installed? I have tried publishing APK and it works. If yes, what is the difference between publishing it as an AIR app and publishing it as an APK?

If you have administrator privileges on your Archos Tab you can try to side-load the AIR installer onto your Archos from your Android phone.  Copy the AIR APK from your phone to a location on your computer and then connect your Archos to your computer.  Or if you have a directory on the internet you can upload and download, though I don't know the legal ramifications concerning all of this side-loading.  You may only be licensed to use AIR on the device on which it was downloaded.
But if you can port your AIR application as a .air file, you might have an extension to your Adobe AIR publication software that allows you to publish an APK file, in which case all you have to do is connect the Archos to your computer and copy the apk to the Archos and install the application, if you have administrator privileges to install applications outside of the Archos market.
Does this make sense?  By no means should you "root" your device though because that could void your warranty and also incur other personal damages to you that you do not need to have.

  • Can't install SIS files

I can't install sis files on my Nokia 6120. What I can do?

    Hi trulli82
Please be aware that Symbian S60 2nd edition use .sis whereas Symbian S60 3rd edition uses .sisx files.
Also go to Application Manager > Options > Settings and set "Online Certificate check" = OFF and Software Installation = ALL.
Secondly try resetting date on phone to January 1 2007 first and if that doesn't work try December 31 2006 as Symbian certificate may have expired; reset date after installation.

  • Since SL install, can't open .mpkg files

I just installed Snow Leopard. I'd like to look at the Optional Installs, but when I double-click on the .mpkg file, Finder asks me what application I want to open it with.
So, what application opens .mpkg files?

    /System/Library/CoreServices/Installer.app
Try a control-click and select "Open With" -> "Other...". Then navigate to /System/Library/CoreServices and select Installer.

  • Can't open opml files anymore

All of a sudden i couldn't open opml files in programs like MindNode Pro, Tree (outliner) and Neo (outliner). Though I still can import opml into Neo via the import option, i can't open a opml file directly in the Open dialog. Also in MindNode Pro and Tree the Open dialog does not recognise opml files as a viable file format. The opml files are all grayed out and impossible to get hold. If I try to open a file via file assosiation with Tree in the Finder, the error message informs me tha:
"The document “Testscrivopml.opml” could not be opened. Tree cannot open files in the “Open Markup Language Document” format."
Likevise with MindNode Pro (open opml file via Finder):
"The document “Testscrivopml.opml” could not be opened. MindNode Pro cannot open files in the “Open Markup Language Document” format."
Everything was fine a week ago. I suspect I have installed a program that have overwritten something at system level or something.
Both MindNode Pro and Tree are bought in Apples App Store, and I have tried re-installing both. That move didn't sort things out... By the way, I can't open opml files on my iMac anymore either (Snow Leopard), which is more or less a mirror app wise of my Macbook Pro (Lion 10.7.4).
    Ideas or solutions anyone?

Yes, I have read the FAQs at several of the apps that are not working, not a sentence about my problem there. I have of course also searched the WWW and several forums. I figure something is wrong with the relationship between the .opml file association and some kind of shared library? Or?

  • Install MPKG Files on MAc OSX 10.5.2

    Hello,
i want to install a MPKG File (install file from tascam us 122-l) on my System.
But my system says "error". Archive is damaged or i do not have the rights.
Apple support can't help me, so does anybody have an idea?
    Thanks KID

    Welcome to the discussions
    I just downloaded the US-122L & US-144 Mac OS X Drivers from
    http://www.tascam.com/details;9,15,69,19.html
which installed with no problem on my system.
Are these drivers what you need?
Try downloading them again, open the disk image and double-click the mpkg (don't copy it to the desktop).
If it fails again, could you please provide the exact error message. Also, a look at the system.log (/Applications/Utilities/Console.app) might give you a clue. Just copy the entries that match the time the install failed and post them here.

  • Can't read mpeg2 files anymore

dvd studio pro, compressor and QTpro are installed on my G5 and I just noticed that I can't play mpeg2 files in QuickTime anymore. The .m2v encoded files in compressor are only readable in DVD SP or third party app like VLC.
It used to work but I didn't do any authoring for a while and now it doesn't work anymore
Is there a bug or conflict with the divx and various components I installed in QuickTime ?
Do I have to buy a new mpeg2 component key ?

Reinstalling DVD Studio Pro should reinstall the missing component.
Run software update after you do this.
    You should have QuickTimeMPEG.component 6.4.1
An update is avaiable here for those who purchased the component as a seperate item:

  • Can't open .mpkg file

I'm not sure what's gone wrong with my computer, but now all of a sudden, I can't dcouble-click a .mpkg file and have it open anymore. Also, there's a generic icon for them now.
    What am I missing?

Thanks for trying to help. When I get info, the "Open with" dropdown box only has two options— one of them is "<None>" and the other is "Other."
I think I must've accidentally deleted something, but I have no idea what it is.
    Any ideas?

  • Can't install mpkg

I just got some new software on a CD. Installation instructions say to open the mpkg file. When I try, I get the following from Installer:
"The operation couldn’t be completed. (com.apple.installer.pagecontroller error -1.) Couldn't open "Traktor Installer Mac.mpkg"."
What should I try to get this to work?

One extra piece of information: I tried copying the CD contents to my HD, and partway through got a message saying:
"The Finder can’t complete the operation because some data in “Traktor Installer Mac.mpkg” can’t be read or written.
    (Error code -36)"
Might the CD be corrupted somehow? Perhaps I have to get a new install disc from the vendor?

  • Cannot install .mpkg files

I have just installed Leopard and the 10.5.2 update and now I want to install the XCode update etc. and all that happens when I double click on any .mpkg files is that Finder launches PackageMaker.app. Anyone know what might be going wrong here? And even better how to fix it?
More fundamentally, what happens when a .mpkg file is double clicked? How is it installed? And what would be the terminal command to do the same?
    TIA.
    Ronan.

For some unknown (to me) reason, the OS now recognizes the .mpkg properly and when selecting open it launches the installer (this is after 4/5 reboots).
This means that the correct icon is now shown, and when ctrl-clicking on the icon in the contextual menu "Open with" now points to the default 'Installer'. The reason why it did not do before this I don't know. In any case, as suggested a package file can also be installed by selecting "System/Library/CoreServices/Installer", or the installer command via the terminal.
Remember not to confuse the system command 'install' with 'installer' - they are totally different.
So I tried both approaches and the terminal gave the following:
ronBook:Optional Installs ronanoc$ sudo installer -pkg "Optional Installs.mpkg" -target /Developer
    Password:
installer: Package name is Optional Installs
installer: Installing at base path /
    installer: The install was successful.
However the installer did not actually install the package and terminated very quickly. Perhaps it is because the developer tools for xcode were already installed in the same path and the command did not differentiate, but gave a 'success' command response all the same. I would think this message is incorrect, as in any case the command returned much too quickly.
Now back to the GUI, and it did not install correctly.
"The following install step failed: run postinstall script for CHUD.Contact the software manufacturer for assistance."
There is a discussion on this error here:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=5645479
Upon deleting the /Developer folder and reinstalling, it solves the problem.
