Can't install newer versions of iTunes and can't un-install current version

HELP!
That's a good start to my first post I think lol... hey at least I'm still laughing, even though I feel like crying!
I am having (probably similar to many from what I can see from this forum and also from google search) problems updating my iTunes to the latets version.
Whenever I start to install the new version I get a message pop up saying that iTunes64.msi can't be located, even though it does exist in the default filepath it throws up anyway.
After doing some Google searches I saw that a way around this might be to use the Windows Unintaller Utility, however, I have yet to actually find this utility, particularly as Microsoft now appear to have removed all traces of it from their site as it seemd to be causing other issues.
Next I found an article on Apple that said that if I am having the problems that I have stated above then I should unistall various apple software items in a particular order with iTunes being the first on the list.
This is where I am now stuck! I can't un-install iTunes from Control Panel as it says that it isn't installed! Of course it is installed, however, it would appear that something somewhere is corrupt and it doesn't actually think it is really installed (I think my PC is suffering a sual personality... maybe that's what dual core really means lol).
The corrupt nature of my iTunes installation would also seem to be borne out by the fact that the icon in the list of installed programs for iTunes is not the normal icon but a blank (unrecognised) icon.
I am now clean out of ideas as I can't do any of the "normal" things to remove and re-install iTunes and so I could really use some help/advice.

Hi Katrina
Thanks for confirming my suspicions on the use of (or rather not) of the utility on Windows 7.
I also tried as you suggested to run the iTune64.msi file from it's location... it almost looked like it was working but then came up with the usual message saying it couldn't find the .msi file.
I even tried copying the file to another location but it still hit the usual error
I have a horrible suspicion that I am not going to get this sorted short of doing a complete re-install of my OS (which I don't fancy doing, particularly as at least iTunes is functioning anyway).
I am already planning to move away from Windows PCs and move onto a Mac in the very near future, so hopefully in the intervening time Apple won't release a critical udate to iTunes that means I need to update to continue certain functionality.
Roll on Mac-Day for methinks
Of course if anyone else can think of any solutions for me to try in the meantime then I would be more than grateful to hear from them and to give it a whirl.

  • I connect my iphone 4 to my itunes and when I press update to get the new iOS 7 software, it says "This version of iTunes (10.6.3) is the current version" and it tells me to press ok. Why is my phone not updating??

My phone says it is connected to itunes and beside the update button it says "a newer version of iphone software is available (version 7.0)...." but when I press 'update' a box pops up that says ""This version of iTunes (10.6.3) is the current version" and then I press okay and nothing else happens. I'm getting frustrated. if anyone can explain to me why I can't update please tell me! Or else I'll have to call up Apple I guess.
    thanks!

You have answered your own question:
    "requires 10.6.3 or higher"
    " i upgraded my itunes to 10.5 "
You need itunes 10.6.3 or later.

The later iOSs requires at least OSX 10.5.8 for the Mac.  You need iTunes 10.5 but 10.4.11 only goes to 9.x.. 10.5.8 is a paid upgrade.
Are you sure that you have a 3G iPod?  If it is 8 or 16 GB it is a 2G and those can only go to 4.2.1 (also requires 10.5.8 or later). A 32 GB can be either  2G or 3G. To identify yours:

  • How do I uninstall the latest version of iTunes and go back to the previous version?

That's my question:  How do I uninstall the latest version of iTunes and go back to the previous version?  I am running 10.6.8, I just uploaded this new "update" version of iTunes and I hate it.  I want the old one back.  How do I do that?

If you are on Mavericks (your profile says different) and using Pages 5.0 you should have Pages 09 in the Applications > iWork 09 folder.

For general advice see Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates.
The steps in the second box are a guide to removing everything related to iTunes and then rebuilding it which is often a good starting point unless the symptoms indicate a more specific approach. Review the other boxes and the list of support documents further down page in case one of them applies.
Your library should be unaffected by these steps but there is backup and recovery advice elsewhere in the user tip.
The section Install missing components has advice on breaking down the iTunes installer into the individual .msi files which might prove useful if one component won't install normally.
If needs be, the Microsoft Program Install and Uninstall Utility (MS Installer "Fixit") may be able to help force through the installation.

It seems that you try to update iTunes rather than your phone. To update your phone, connect it to your computer, and on the page of your phone in iTunes, you should have a button "check for updates" or something similar.

  • Troubleshoot: when I try to update my Iphone 4 (ios 4.3.3) to the latest ios via itunes. It gives me a message "This version of iTunes (10.6.3) is the current version." Why?

Hello - I am trying to update my Iphone 4 from its current Ios (4.3.3) to the latest Ios (7.x.x?). I currently do not sync using icloud, and have only started syncing to my itunes today.
So far, I have backed up my Iphone using Itunes, transferred all my purchases using Itunes, and imported all my photos using Iphoto.
Then clicked on my Iphone in the left hand Column and in the screen that appeared found the "Update" button. Next to the update button read "A newer version of the iPhone software is available (version7.0). To update your iPhone with the latest software, click Update."
I then clicked the "Update" button and a pop-up message reading "This version of iTunes (10.6.3) is the current version." appeared.
Please advise why this happened, and how I should go about restoring and updating this Iphone.
After updating to the latest IOS, my next step will be to sign up for iCloud.
    Thanks clever mac folk!

    Hello hsielglad,
Thank you for your question. iTunes 11.1 is required to update to and sync with iOS 7.  If you are still running iTunes 10.6.3, I recommend trying to obtain the update by going to the iTunes menu and selecting Check for Updates.

  • Itunes and Quicktime want to update current version

    Windows 7 64 bit
    Itunes 11.1.3
    QT 7.7.4
The Apple Software update window pops up regularly wanting me to update the latst versions which are already on the computer. I have updated, removed the software and reinstalled, it still wants to update. Running "check for updates" from within Itunes, it says I have the current version Itunes. Running the same check from within QT yields the need to update both Itunes and QT. Is there a way to let the system know I am running the latest versions?

I have found some similar, but not quite the same threads. I ran "regedit" from the command line and just looked for the word quicktime (I dare not edit the registry just yet, I am not technically competent enough). I found one entry at HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Installer\Products\0C7EC0FA4E3A37D(bunch more)....\SourceList\Net pointing to c:\ProgramData\Apple Computer\Installer Cache\QuickTime 7.73.80.64\. I went there and found several Itunes entries back to 10.6.3.25 and thee QuickTime entries back to 7.72.80.56. I have no idea if these do anything, but 7.73.80.64 is not the latest version on teh computer and it is not the latest version in the directory. The latest listed in this directory is 7.74.80.86
Found another key for itunes pointing to same directory area, ending with iTunes 11.1.3.8. This is the latest listed in the directory and it is the version on the computer.
Can I safely change the registry entry for QuickTime to 7.74.80.86? Within the registry, this data is the third line down. The tree lines are like this:
    Name          Type                         Data
    (Default)     REG_SZ                    (value not set)
    1               REG_EXPAND_SZ     C:\Users\Gary\AppData\Local\Temp\IXP235.TMP\
    2               REG_EXPAND_SZ     C:\ProgramData\Apple Computer\Installer Cache\QuickTime 7.73.80.64\

I'm assuming you are trying to run the installer from apple. What I would suggest is you download the installer manually to your desktop then launch the installer. If try to run the installer over the intertubes you may run into a problem like you did.
Then I would uninstall itunes 8 and any software associated with it like the apple update software, quicktime, apple mobile device support. However uninstalling itunes should remove any additional software it installs. Then clean out your temp folder:
    6. Clean out your temp folders,
    a. C:\windows\temp (if one exists)
    b. C:\Documents and Settings\{username}\Local Settings\Temp
Sometimes installers will pick up old files or won’t delete their temporary files.
Then with a newly download installer on your desktop try launching it. Let me know if that helps.
Here is an apple doc that help.

  • Can I get rid of my iTunes and go back to an older version?

I have had too many problems with my newer versions of iTunes. I just want to go back to an older version where I didn't have any problems. I want to go back about 2-3 versions. My dad has it on his because he never updated it and he has no problems at all.
Right now I have version 7.1.1.5
    Thanks.

I had the exact problem. It would get to about 80% "updating library" then get stuck there. I went through all the "advised solutions" and then after days of looking I found the older version.. here you go: http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/itunes605forwindows.html
Let me know if it works for you!

You said: " Cannot backup as not able to in iTunes" What happens when you try to backup?
What are you doing when you get this message: "I have followed the solution but am not given the choice to select the device."?
What do you mean by: "The dates and times on both match."?
You are not telling use what you are doing and what happens when you do it.

  • HT201359 What do I do? Can't delete credit card from iTunes and can't update apps

I'm having problems with deleting my credit card from my iTunes account. Tried everything possible. I tried making a purchase but it didn't go through so now it's not letting me update my apps. What do I do?

"None" should be located right next to where you chose what kind of credit card you are using. You should be able to find it, if you go to your account and click 'Edit Payment Information' Then where it says what kind of card it is it should be right after PayPal. But if you can't find it, can't you just highlight the information and backspace it?
