Can't install on Apple Partition Map (PPC)

I have a powerbook G4, everytime I try to install, I get the error message:
+You cannot install Mac OS X on this volume. To enable installation on this volume open Disk Utility from the Utilities menu and repartition this disk as ‘GUID Partition Table’.+
But as I understand it, a ppc mac can't boot from GUID, so why is it asking me to do this?
on googling I came across this guide ( _http://northstarlabs.net/2007/11/04/leopard-firewire-target-mode-os-install/_ ) which sounds exactly like what I need, but I know little about using the terminal.
Am I doing something wrong?
Or Does anyone know any other ways to bypass the partition check?

There is part of your problem, when you put the macbook in target mode and then try to load from the mac mini, it uses the information from the mini to try the install. Here is what you need to do
Insert Leopard disk (Actual Leopard disk, not restore disk for mac mini) in the Mini, shut it down and then restart the Mini in target mode.
With the macbook off, and the Mini in target mode connect them together with Firewire cable. Start Macbook and immediately after chime press and hold alt/option key. This should bring up disk selection menu. Find the Leopard install disk, select it and click on the straight arrow. Leopard installation should start. Make sure when you get to the point of which harddrive to install to, Pick the macbooks harddrive (Since the mini is in target mode its harddisk will also show up in the list)
If you are unsuccessful with that method, there have been some known issues with the Leopard installation disk and you will need to contact Apple to get it replaced.

Can I keep my Lightroom 3 catalog on a PowerMac hard drive with Apple Partition Map

I want to keep my LR3 catalog on a HD in my Power Mac (Intel chip) that I had formatted and used to store my pre-LR3 photo folders on my G5 tower. The 1TB drive is half full, and was formatted as an Apple Partition Map. On swapping the drive into an empty bay in my Power Mac, I can open photos saved on the drive, although I can't seem to rename them. I created my brand new LR3 catalog on the drive as well, but haven't done anything other than import the LR3 catalog I had already created and exported from my MacBook. Other than the drive not being bootable on my Intel Power Mac, are there any risks to managing my LR3 catalog from this drive? Or should I only keep my LR3 catalog on a GUID partitioned drive?
This HD is not of course my startup drive, but only to be used to store my photos.

Disk format GPT and Apple Partition Map Upgrade questions

I was told that switching to the new computer with snow leopard that I would need to reformat my drives from my G5 to GPT (GUID Partition Table) from Apple Partition Map (APM) to get time machine to work (see http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2706634&tstart=0)

Disk utility is only giving me Mac OS Extended options, which I thought was my drive format already. So what do I do now? do I erase those drives or what? I'd rather not if I don't need to.

The Erase window only offers the formatting scheme.
The Partition Tab offers the selection of GPT or APM partitioning scheme.
You don't have to partition beyond one partition if you don't want to.
Just make sure GPT is selected and the apply.

Partitioned drive with "Apple Partition Map" but installer says that the disk is not bootable

and refuses to install 10.5 on it.
I have an external drive hooked up to an eMac. The plan is to install 10.5 on the drive, and then put the drive into a G4 powerbook.
I booted the eMac from the 10.5 retail install disk, partitioned the external drive into 1 partition, with the 'Apple Partition Map' option selected in the options. But when I go to try to install onto the disk, it has a red X and says that the computer can not boot off of the device so it refuses to install.
Can anybody tell me what step(s) I missed?

The choice I selected was "Mac OS extended (Journaled)" which I think is HFS+journaled -- or at least none of the other choices on the pull-down looked remotely correct.

How to set up Apple Partition Map not to be a Master Boot Record

In order to copy Leopard install disk to a flash drive I need format the 8 G Cruzer (on which the U3 was removed) to set up Apple Partition Map not to be a Master Boot Record to be bootable on my Quicksilver G4. I never used partitioning before, step by step please.

Forget booting USB on any G4
USB booting is possible on all G4s and later models starting with the G4 (AGP) models, per -

I think I read somewhere (couldn't find it just now) that the earlier versions of OSX are not USB bootable, so booting to USB on G4s might need to be by using OS 9.
I've never tried USB booting. However, I have made a bootable Zip100 disk for my G4/500 (AGP), using its internal Zip drive. Did it just to see if it would work - it does. There's a fair amount of room left over on the 100MB disk, too.
Intel-based machines are also USB bootable, per this article -

GUID vs. Apple Partition Map

On my new Mac Pro the G-Raid3 will not mount in eSATA. It's fine in 800 Firewire. Out of the box it was set for Apple Partition Map and worked fine on my previous Intel Mac Pro on the same eSATA card.
Suddenly on the new MacPro it doesn't mount. G-Technology told me I have to repartition it as GUID. They said I have to select "Free Space" first and then proceed normally. (It's a 3-TB drive Raided internally.)
Now I checked a Time Machine backup disk I am using on my laptop. That also is Apple Partition. The laptop itself is GUID.
If we're going to keep up to date in an Intel world, is it wise to get all the drives into GUID format?
And what about Free Space? Should that be chosen every time? Why not just OS X Journaled?

Check on TimeMachine specs, I thought it req'd GPT(GUID).
GPT is a better 'modern' partition format and features.
I've never been much of a fan or in favor of multi-interface, handy for home users.
G-Tech's advice. The only way to change a drive to GPT from APM is
click on drive (not volume partition)
change from "current partition" to anything else, ie, "free space"
So that the OPTIONS.... will be available at the bottom.
Click OPTIONS
change to GUID and click APPLY
Change partitions to what you need. Mac OS Extended (journaling)
Click Apply.
Destroys any data.
Things that worked in older Mac Pro may need firmware or driver updates. So your controller might - and please include things like what controller you use.

GUID partition table/Apple Partition Map

I just bought recently a Seagate FreeAgent Go for Mac and I'm planning on using it with Time Machine. My question is the following: since the Seagate is partitioned following the GUID partition table, and my mac's internal HD is partitioned according to the Apple Partition Map; would that affect in any way the backups?

How can I reset my macs partition map?

I have an MBP mid 2012 with 750GB HD (the higher model, with i7 2.9GHz and 8 gigs of ram) which I am possibly passing on to someone. I have the latest version of Mavericks, triple booted to include Windows 8.1 and Linux Ubuntu.
To reset the computer I will likely use this method:
Step One - Back up your data:
       A. If you have any Virtual PCs shut them down. They cannot be in their "fast saved" state. They must be shut down from inside Windows.
       B. Clone to an external drive using using Carbon Copy Cloner.
          1. Open Carbon Copy Cloner.
          2. Select the Source volume from the Select a source drop down menu on the left side.
          3. Select the Destination volume from the Select a destination drop down menu on the right
              side.
          4. Click on the Clone button. If you are prompted about creating a clone of the Recovery HD be
              sure to opt for that.
               Destination means a freshly erased external backup drive. Source means the internal
               startup drive.
Step Two - Prepare the machine for the new buyer:
          1. De-authorize the computer in iTunes! De-authorize both iTunes and Audible accounts.
          2, Remove any Open Firmware passwords or Firmware passwords.
          3. Turn the brightness full up and volume nearly so.
          4. Turn off File Vault, if enabled.
          5. Use Boot Camp Assistant to remove a Windows partition, if there be one.
          6. Disable iCloud, if enabled: See.What to do with iCloud before selling your computer
Step Three - Install a fresh OS:
     A. Snow Leopard and earlier versions of OS X
          1. Insert the original OS X install CD/DVD that came with your computer.
          2. Restart the computer while holding down the C key to boot from the CD/DVD.
          3. Select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu; repartition and reformat the internal hard drive.
              Optionally, click on the Security button and set the Zero Data option to one-pass.
          4. Install OS X.
          5. Upon completion DO NOT restart the computer.
          6. Shutdown the computer.
     B. Lion and Mountain Lion (if pre-installed on the computer at purchase*)
         Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because
                   it is three times faster than wireless.
          1. Restart the computer while holding down the COMMAND and R keys until the Mac OS X
              Utilities window appears.
          2. Select Disk Utility from the Mac OS X Utilities window and click on the Continue button.
          3. After DU loads select your startup volume (usually Macintosh HD) from the left side list. Click
              on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
          4. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Optionally, click on the Security button
              and set the Zero Data option to one-pass.
          5. Click on the Erase button and wait until the process has completed.
          6. Quit DU and return to the Mac OS X Utilities window.
          7. Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion and click on the Install button.
          8. Upon completion shutdown the computer.
But, due to having three partitions on my computer and multiple operating systems installed, I at some stage needed to mess with the partition map (I remember doing this at one point: Repairing Boot Camp after creating new partition). Will using the above steps completely reset any custom "bios" I had installed and reset the partition maps/remove all partitions (Assuming I likely delete all the partitions and then re allocate all the space to OSX?
And if the above would not work, what do I need to do to remove these and will it be possible to restore the mac fully to the "factory default"?

If you get any error messages at this point, report the error messages, don't proceed further.
You're now in gdisk interactive mode. Menus/commands are single characters followed by return/enter. So type ? and <enter> and you'll get the main menu listing commands. Type p <enter> and it will print (display) the current GPT. Since you have 5 GPT entries, you can't use a 1 for 1 GPT to MBR scheme like Apple does. The following suggestion is safe, but all hybrid MBRs are non-standard inventions, and therefore I can't tell you how Boot Camp Assistant or Disk Utility will react to this hybrid MBR should you decide to make changes later. What I can tell you is Windows, Linux, and Mac OS X themselves have no problem with this MBR scheme.
r <enter>        go to the recovery & transformation menu
h <enter>        create a new hybrid MBR
5 <enter>        add partion 5 to the MBR
<enter>          accept the default MBR hex code of 07
y <enter>        set the bootable flag
n <enter>        do not protect more partitions
o < enter>       print (display) the MBR
You should have two entries. One type EE, one 07, with the 07 entry marked with * under Boot. If you don't, report back. If you do, write out the update partition information, and hope a power failure doesn't occur for the next few seconds...
w <enter>     write partition table to disk
reboot. hold down option - you should be able to boot into either Mac HD, Recovery HD, or Windows.
I just tested this same five partition GPT and 2 partition MBR on a working system and the instructions above worked.
Note, so long as CSM-BIOS and thus MBR are required for Boot Camp instead of EFI booting Windows, we're stuck with flaky MBR problems, as well as the 2TB disk limitation for Windows boot disks.

If you format in Guid for Intel Macs, Apple partition for PPC Macs for Boot drives, then why do my PPC Hard drives Boot in my 2007 Mac Pro, what gives?

I recently purchased a 2007 Mac Pro for a song, swapped the CPU's for octo chipsets and proceeded to wait for new Hdd's in the mail. I was told the Hard drives in my old G5 would not be bootable unless they're in Guid format. Disc Utility confirmed to use the specific maps as well and yet all of my 2006 PPC Power Mac G5 Hard drives boot in my MP without a hitch, although a few none universal apps do not work. So what am I missing, does it really matter which Apple partion map to choose from or is this a fluke?...

Let's try a standalone Apple Mobile Device Support install. It still might not install, but fingers crossed any error messages will give us a better idea of the underlying cause of why it's not installing under normal conditions.

Right-click the iTunesSetup.exe (or iTunes64setup.exe), and select "Extract to iTunesSetup" (or "Extract to iTunes64Setup"). WinRAR will expand the contents of the file into a folder called "iTunesSetup" (or "iTunes64Setup").
Go into the folder and doubleclick the AppleMobileDeviceSupport.msi (or AppleMobileDeviceSupport64.msi) to do a standalone AMDS install.
(If it offers you the choice to remove or repair, choose "Remove", and if the uninstall goes through successfully, see if you can reinstall by doubleclicking the AppleMobileDeviceSupport.msi again.)
Does it install (or uninstall and then reinstall) properly for you? If so, can you get a normal iTunes install to go through properly now?

Can I install additional Windows Partition?

I currently have a Mac Pro OS X 10.5.8 with a 500 GB HD (primary) with Boot Camp 2.1 with a 220 GB Windows Vista (32 bit) partition running on my system. Works great.
I just purchased an Western Digital Black Caviar 1 TB internal drive and I own an unused copy of Windows XP SP2.
Can I partition my new drive (secondary) with Bootcamp Assistant and create a Windows XP partition that I can boot up into as well as my Vista partition?

So are you technically saying that Boot camp doesn't allow the user to add more than one Windows installation? I know it doesn't allow more than one install per a volume. But I was hoping to split my 1 TB drive into 500 GB partitions and allocate one partition to OS X and the other to the new Windows XP install.
I found below info but it wasn't 100% clear to me if it is saying only one Windows partition per each volume or one Windows partition period.

The drive will work in a Mac Pro, but it won't be bootable. It might be possible to copy the applications, but they may not work. They may be PPC only versions that would have to run in slower emulation mode, if they work at all. They may not be compatible with the version of OSX on the Mac Pro. Applications with serial numbers often need new serial numbers if used on a different computer. You could use Migration Assistant (Utilities folder) to move your accounts and data, but it may have problems with older apps.
I bought it with all the apps already loaded. FCP, C4D, CS4 etc. I don't have serials or discs for apps.
Then you don't have legitimate copies of the apps. If the previous owner kept the discs and serial numbers, the applications should have been deleted before sale. You should buy current versions of the applications you need. They will work better on a Mac Pro than the older versions (if they would worj at all).

Can't install Windows 8 - Partition problems

Ive recently installed a SSD (Samsung 830) into my iMac 2011. It already had a 1 TB HDD in it but I want to install Mountain Lion and Windows 8 on the SSD.
Installing Mountain Lion was a piece of cake but now im getting problems installing the bootcamp partition with Windows 8. See below

Ive tried to creating the bootcamp partition with the DISK UTILITY and the Bootcamp assistant, but neither of these methods work. Is it because of the 1TB HDD thats causing these problems or is it something else?

But no luck, getting a Save MBR failed, exit code 255 when trying to clone the VM Hard drive onto BC.
Think im going to swap the SSD to the HDD bay and put the Superdrive back in
