Can't install or uninstall itunes/quicktime?

I've been trying for a few weeks now to uninstall itunes and quicktime.
Everytime I try uninstalling QuickTime, the following message comes up: "A newer version of QuickTime is already installed. This installation cannot proceed while the newer version of QuickTime is installed.
When I try to uninstall the itunes that is on my computer or install a more updated version, I get the following message: "The Windows Installer Service could not be acessed. This can occur if you're running Windows in safe mode, or if the Windows Installer is not correctly installed. Contact your support personnel for assistance."
I tried using a program called Revo to uninstall both of these programs but it will not work. :/ This is frustrating me to no end, and it's exceptionally frustrating because I've just bought a new ipod touch and I currently can't use it.
Please help.

Unfortunately, this sort of trouble has gotten more complicated to deal with ever since Microsoft pulled the Windows Installer CleanUp utility from their Download Center on June 25. First we have to find a copy of the utility.
Let's try Googling. (Best not to use Bing, I think.) Look for a working download site for at least version 3.0 of the Windows Installer CleanUp utility. (The results from mydigitallife and Major Geeks are worth checking.)
After downloading the utility installer file (msicuu2.exe), scan the file for malware, just in case. (I use the free version of Malwarebytes AntiMalware to do single-file scans for that.)
If the file is clean, to install the utility, doubleclick the msicuu2.exe file you've downloaded.
Now run the utility ("Start > All Programs > Windows Install Clean Up"). In the list of programs that appears in CleanUp, select any QuickTime entries and click "Remove".
Restart the PC, and try another iTunes install.
If you still get the following message:
"The Windows Installer Service could not be acessed. This can occur if you're running Windows in safe mode, or if the Windows Installer is not correctly installed. Contact your support personnel for assistance."
... and you're on a 64-bit Windows 7, try the following instructions (even though they're for Vista, they're often applicable for Windows 7 too):

    I can't install or uninstall iTunes on my laptop.  I've followed all the steps on Apple Support as well as Microsoft support.  I get the error "The feature you are trying to use is on a network resource that is unavailable.  Pick an alternate path to a folder containing the installation package 'iTunes.msi".  This has been going on for a couple of weeks now and I'm very frustrated.  From what I can see, I'm not the only one with this problem, but I have yet to see anyone post a solution that works.  Microsoft wants to charge me $99 to troubleshoot it for me and Apple will charge $20.  I think both are ridiculous as this is obviously not "operator error".

    (1) Download the Windows Installer CleanUp utility installer file (msicuu2.exe) from the following Major Geeks page (use one of the links under the "DOWNLOAD LOCATIONS" thingy on the Major Geeks page):

    (3) In your Start menu click All Programs and then click Windows Install Clean Up. The Windows Installer CleanUp utility window appears, listing software that is currently installed on your computer.
    (4) In the list of programs that appears in CleanUp, select any iTunes entries and click "Remove", as per the following screenshot:

    The itunes64.msi cannot be found in the temp sub-folder it was originally installed in.
    I believe the System Mechanic cleaned out the temp files and now I can't install or uninstall itunes.
    I tried to manually recreate the folder that the itunes64 setup is looking for and manually copied the 11.0.1 version of all the .msi files included in the installation, but, the installation still cannot find the itunes64.msi.

    Background: A few weeks ago my computer locked up at the "Welcome" screen. Took it to a local place for service. They were able to say it was a Windows problem. They explained that there was a possiblity that computer would have to be reformatted, and made me sign saying that I would not hold them responsible for lost data, etc. At that point I said the only things on it that I would really hate to lose would be iTunes (we had three profiles set up and three separate music libraries) and my photos. Ironically, when I got the computer back those were the only things that were messed up at all. While the computer was in the shop, they deleted all the profiles, except the main administrator account, but the data has been saved in a file, so I still have my music (just can't access it, but that will be another post). The people at the computer shop claim they did nothing and this is not their problem, it is mine to fix. I am NOT an advaced computer person, and don't really know where to turn. They suggested I post here.
    First, when I open iTunes, a box comes up, with the title iTunes Setup Assistant. It says, "Warning! The registry setting used by the iTunes drivers for importing and burning CDs and DVDs are missing. This can happen as a result of installing other CD burning software. Please reinstall iTunes." The computer guy says he didn't install anything. Anyway, if I close this box, iTunes opens.
    BUT, when I got my computer back, the new version had been released, and I thought I would download and install that version. The download went fine, and the installation went fine until it was time to uninstall the old version. I then get the following (long) error message: "The path C:\Documents and Settings\All users\Application Data\Apple Computer\Installer Cache\iTunes 7.1.1.5\iTunes.msi cannot be found. Verify that you have access to this location and try again or try to find the installation package "iTunes.msi" in a folder from which you can install the product iTunes." OK, so I am not really understanding what this is telling me. I did do a search of my computer for
    iTunes.msi, and found it in three different locations. I tried putting those locations in the path above, but apparently that is not what the computer is looking for. When I finally tried to cancel the installation, I get the error message, "The older version of iTunes cannot be removed. Contact your Technical Support Group."
    So next, I went to the control panel and attempted to uninstall iTunes from there (thinking I will uninstall it myself and then go back to the install of the new version). I click on iTunes, then click on Remove, then I get the same (long) error message as I did above.
    At this point I am really stuck. I can't uninstall the old version, either through the Control Panel, or through the installation of the new version, and it won't allow me to install the new version until the old version is gone. I am totally stumped. Is there any other way for someone like me (read, I can't afford to pay someone more hundreds of dollars to do this) to somehow uninstall the old version? And once uninstalled, should the new version install OK?
    And finally, does this sound like something that "just happened" while Windows was being worked on, or does this sound like someone purposely did something to cause these problems? I really do thank you for any help you can give me with this!

    Okay. With the folllowing one:
    "Warning! The registry setting used by the iTunes drivers for importing and burning CDs and DVDs are missing. This can happen as a result of installing other CD burning software. Please reinstall iTunes."
    ... this was probably caused by them clearing the device filter drivers in your registry. (That's a fairly standard troubleshooting step with a boot-up failure.) If it's not fixed by getting iTunes properly installed again, we'll attend to it later on.
    First we'd better get an itunes installed.
    "The path C:\Documents and Settings\All users\Application Data\Apple Computer\Installer Cache\iTunes 7.1.1.5\iTunes.msi cannot be found. Verify that you have access to this location and try again or try to find the installation package "iTunes.msi" in a folder from which you can install the product iTunes."
    Hmmmm. I'm thinking that your Windows Installer got confused by the general recovery efforts too.
    Let's try the following procedure to try and get a fresh itunes in there.
    First, head into your Add/Remove programs and uninstall your QuickTime. If it goes, good. If it doesn't, we'll just attend to it when we attend to iTunes.
    Next, download and install the Windows Installer CleanUp utility. Use it to clear any existing iTunes and/or QuickTime installation configuration information from the PC. (Launch Windows Installer CleanUp, find any iTunes and/or QuickTime entries in the list of programs in CleanUp, select those entries, and click “remove”.)

    Next, use the the following document as a guide for manual removal of leftover iTunes and QuickTime program files:

    Now try another iTunes install. Does it go through properly this time? If so, does itunes launch properly, without the "registry settings" message?

    The link to download the installer package is about one inch above the gray box that says contents of the readme file. Download & install the utility and open it by going to Start > All Programs > Windows Installer CleanUp. Click on iTunes and click Remove. You can also use this to remove QuickTime in the same way, and then go here to reinstall iTunes:

  • Can't install or uninstall iTunes in Vista

    OK, this is really messed up.  I had a corrupted file in iTunes that wouldn't allow it to open.  So I tried to download and install it and failed.  I tried to uninstall it and then reinstall and failed.  So I think I've got a corrupted version of iTunes now that won't uninstall.  Here's the error message I get.  I can't read the entire file name that it references.
    Any help would be greatly appreciated.  I've worked on this now all morning without success.

    Everything I have tried ends with can't find iTunes64.msi - I can't update my version of iTunes (11.1.0.126), uninstall my current iTunes per help info on Support, Install a new version because it can't uninstall old version because it can't find iTunes64.msi. I have located it in two places. First, the place the installer tells me that it can't fined it. Second, another place, but when I put that location in the "browse" field the installer tells me it still can't locate it. and finally, the file itself appears in the search field but I get the same response from the installer, It can't locate the file.   • I can't install or uninstall itunes.  Says the iTunes.msi file is not a valid file.  My iTunes started acting odd after having the Windows XP virus.  I got ride of the virus, but then the repercussion of having it have wrecked havoc.

    An error pops up saying that the file isn't found and then when I link it to the file, the error says it isn't a valid itunes.msi file.  I had iTunes on my PC but it won't work properly so I am trying to re-install or update it.  Neither works.

    So I tried installing it and when I did it stopped at a certain point, giving me a message about "not being able to write to the file C:\ProgramFiles\iTunes\ iTunes.Resources\fr.lproj\ipodsettings.nib\objects.xib"
    problems with language resource files and folders (i believe that's one of the French ones that you're having a problem with) are often produced by disk damage around the areas of the files in question.
    so perhaps let's try running a chkdsk over your C drive. see:

    does the chkdsk find/repair any damage? if so, does the uninstall or reinstall go through any better afterwards?

    Hi everyone, Itunes has been telling my to upgrade for a couple of weeks now. But every time I tried it didn't work, then it decided to stop recognising my ipod. So I downloaded the latest stand alone install, but every time it failed. So I thought it would be a good idea to install first.     Okay ... does regedit show that you have (or are supposed to have) full control over that key?
    If you do, but you're not being allowed to make any changes to it, try drifting up one level in the heirarchy, to:
    HKEYLOCALMACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Installer\UserData\S-1-5-18\Co mponents\
    Do you have full control on that key? if not, are you able to grant yourself full control on that one without being denied?

    The problem is with version 10.4.1.  I had to reload 10.3 to get it to work.  The recommendation from a previous poster worked for me.  Here was their list of steps:
    Go to Control Panel>Programs>Uninstall
    2.  Uninstall the following Apple programs in the following order:
         a. iTunes
         b. QuickTime
         c. Apple Software Update
         d. Apple Mobile Devices Support
         e. Bonjour
         f.  Apple Appllcation Support
    3.  Reboot PC
    4.  Find, Download and Install iTunes 10.3 (you can find it at FileHippo.com)
    If you start iTunes now you will get an error message saying that the current iTunes library was created by a newer version of iTunes.  To correct this:
    5.  Go to your Music>iTunes folder and delete the "iTunes Library.itl" database file
    6.  Within this iTunes folder find and open the "Previous iTunes Libraries" folder and locate the most recently dated "iTunes Library (date).itl" database file.
    7.  Copy and Paste this file back into the iTunes folder
    8.  Rename this "iTunes Library (date).itl" file by removing the date.  It should say "iTunes Library.itl"
    9.  Reboot PC

    OK.  You merely erased the content and settings.  The IOS is still there.
    If it has NEVER been jailbroke, here are some standard repair procedures.  From what you've already stated, my guess is that you'll end up with Recovery Mode described in the last paragraph.
    First, try a system reset.  It cures many ills and it's quick, easy and harmless...
    Hold down the on/off switch and the Home button simultaneously until you see the Apple logo.  Ignore the "Slide to power off" text if it appears.  You will not lose any apps, data, music, movies, settings, etc.
    If the Reset doesn't work, try a Restore.  Note that it's nowhere near as quick as a Reset.  It could take well over an hour!  Connect via cable to the computer that you use for sync.  From iTunes, select the iPad/iPod and then select the Summary tab.  Follow the on-screen directions for Restore and be sure to say "yes" to the backup.  You will be warned that all data (apps, music, movies, etc.) will be erased but, as the Restore finishes, you will be asked if you wish the contents of the backup to be copied to the iPad/iPod.  Again, say "yes."
    At the end of the basic Restore, you will be asked if you wish to sync the iPad/iPod.  As before, say "yes."  Note that that sync selection will disappear and the Restore will end if you do not respond within a reasonable time.  If that happens, only the apps that are part of the IOS will appear on your device.  Corrective action is simple -  choose manual "Sync" from the bottom right of iTunes.
    If you're unable to do the Restore (or it doesn't help), go into Recovery Mode per the instructions here.  You WILL lose all of your data (game scores, etc,) but, for the most part, you can redownload apps and music without being charged again.  Also, read this.

    Every time I try to update iTunes there is a problem installing the iTunes software. I am forced to uninstall iTunes, quicktime, bonjour etc. every time!     Can you detail what "problem" arises? Is it the same problem every time, and if so what exactly is the error message. If you can provide that information, it will help people diagnose the problem and offer suggestions.
    One common problem, for any OS or application update, is antivirus and antispyware software. It's usually a good idea to temporarily disable any such utility prior to attempting any software installation or upgrade.
