Can't install OS10.2 on eMac

I recently purchased an eMac with the hard drive wiped. I have OS10.2 installation discs but can't install.
When the computer is switched on there is an alternating question mark and smiley face (alternating on about a two second cycle).
Nothing happens when I inserted installation disc 1 - no disc icon appeared, or anything else. I tried restarting the computer (by switching the power off and on again, with the disc in the drive and with the C button pressed. Still nothing.
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Hello Derekwalter,
First of all, Welcome to the Apple Discussion forums!
"I have OS10.2 installation discs but can't install"
Are these discs full retail install discs? Make sure they are not machine specific to another Mac or are "upgrade" discs. Do you know how much ram/memory is installed on the eMac? Hard Disk size? It would be most helpful, also, to know which exact eMac model it is (Mhz/Ghz processor)? It may be a problem with trying to install an earlier OS than what came preinstalled on the machine. The first eMac (700 Mhz) came with 10.1 pre-installed whereas the last model eMac G4 came with Tiger 10.4 pre-installed. You cannot install an OS earlier than what came pre-installed on the eMac.
If you know this information it may help to troubleshoot your installation problems.
cheers,
LS

  • Can't install OS10.4 due to error message

I thought mrtotes had solved my last question and somewhat it did, but not all, so here is my additional problem and will give you the steps I took on my imac to get to this question,
    1. Erased + added zeros, switched to install but no destination disk icon so….
    2. Did a restart, on start up I got a screen gray /black/gray with flashing ? mark in small folder
    3. Destination location for install unavailable (no icon)
    4. Switched to disk utility
    Disk Utility
    Verify
    1. Invalid B-tree node size
    2. The volume needs to be repaired
    3. Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit
    4. 1 HSF volume check
    5. Volume needs repair
    Repair
    1. invalid B-tree node size
    2. Volume check failed
    3. Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit
    4. 1 HSF volume checked
    5. 1 volume could not be repaired because of error
So my question of course is what should I do?

    I do too, give me . . .
Let us know how you do, OK?
And if you have any questions, please post them back

I finally received the Disk Warrior and started it up from the cd ran it and it froze up with the spinning beach ball, so I ran it again, it did the same and thought well now that I spent $65.00 on another utility that doesn’t work, I’ll give it one more try tomorrow and then go to the forum and see what anyone has to say about this problem. So today I tried it and let it run oh about 2 hours as it was not doing a thing (froze), so I pressed the power button to stop the process that was not working, started it up this time not from the cd and ran it again, it did not work.
I then started up my new 10.4 install software and for whatever reason it showed the HD (it had not shown this since my last forum question) icon so I clicked on it and erased it, I have everything backed up on this ibook I’m using and an external HD, and to my surprise it installed, which it didn’t before because it said the HD could not be repaired, so since I bought this DiskWarrior cd I ran it on the new installed 10.4 it said it found some errors and repaired them and built a new directory.
This is scary, I hope whatever DiskWarrior does it works.
I now have another question I want to know if anyone thinks it is safe to install my OS 9.2 on the HD so I can use my PhotoShop 6.0 or should I leave it off and just buy the next version of Photoshop that only operates on a OS10? I guess I’m just afraid that all my problems I’ve had with the computer has something to do with two operating systems on the same disk. Thanks for all your help.

  • Can I install OS10.7 on a Late 2013 MBP?

I have a new machine (woo hoo!) which came with Mavericks installed. Funny thing though, Mavericks doesn't play well with a client's server. Plus they are behind on the Adobe suite, and Illustrator 5.1 is also not happiest with Mavericks. SO, can I down-grade to OS 10.7 on the newer machine? And how much of a PITA would that be?
If I were to do that, what would be the best way to do it? Partition the HD and install 10.7 on the partition? Will it run all my software if it's not on the startup drive?
    Thanks--Dina

That really is a bummer...there are so many companies/agencies that do not keep their systems updated well enough for employees to be as productive as they might be
I had that issue with work where they used a very old version of Citrix XenApp which gave me fits and forced me to run a four generation old version on my Mac for secure remote access.  Funny they could argue security while using an outdated, vulnerable system

  • Can you install Panther on an eMac using retail disks?

I've had problems in the past installing Panther onto an eMac using retail disks.
is there a problem doing this??
past issue - once installed, and booting for the first time, the screen on the eMac would only show the center 50%, the cursor would not go outside of it but there were buttons and icons outside of it. i had to install from the eMac disks and then upgrade to server. (i was doing a OS X Server install onto an eMac then)
current issue - i can't boot from the Panther disk 1!!! checking to make sure it is not the disk..... my client was in the middle of installing Panther, and in the middle of disk 1 it froze and i think gave a KP based on his report of what happened.
    thanks
    bob

When you get the blinking mac face/question mark when booting, this means that your machine can't find the startup disk it's looking for - whether cd or hard drive. After a moment, it then searches until it finds any startup disk. You can lose your Classic - OS9, while doing operating systems loads if you don't restore it from your original system disks that came with your machine. There may be problems trying to go back to 10.2 from 10.3. It's not a problem I've had, but someone was telling me that the major upgrades (Jaguar to Panther) may have firmware updates that aren't compatible if you try to reload the older OS. It's best to install Panther, then reinstall your applications from the original disks that came with your machine.

  • BB 10 OS update, Can't install it whatever I do...

I get a notification every few days in my BB hub saying there's a software update to install: Blackberry 10 OS update, version 10.2.1.2977.
It's been happening for months now, but whatever I do I can't install it! When I start trying to install it, it'll say 'please free up 0KB MB of space to continue' Then I press resume becuase obviously I don't need to do anything to free '0KB' but then it says 'please free up 1182MB of space...' and everytime I press resume it tells me a completely different ammount to free up! I've tried even completly backing up then clearing off my phone my entire device data, pictures etc, uninstalled my apps etc and still the same thing!
This is so annoying becuase my phone obviously needs the update as it's started malfunctioning and I can't access my pictures etc now :/
    thanks

    Hello,
I recommend you abandon the attempt of the OTA update wizard and instead try, in the following order, these methods:

Indeed, given what you describe, an AutoLoader might be your best bet...just be sure you have a COMPLETE backup of your device, including a manual copy of all of your data (pictures, etc.) as well as full documentation of how you like it configured, all of your passwords, etc. etc. etc.

  • Can't install OS 9 onto G3 slot loading - have restore cd with oS 9.0 only

I am trying to update my G3 to OS X. I purchased OS 10.0.3, OS 10.1 update and OS 10.1.5 update plus other stuff. I successfully got it all working, airport and all but had when I installed one of the updates I had to install and erase. It therefore wiped out my OS 9.2.2 that I had. Then I tried to re-install my OS9 (my machine only came with OS 9.0 restore cd) and an article I read on how to install it recommended I do a "clean install". After many, many hours of upgrading... I lost all of what I did to upgrade to OS10. NOW, I can't install OS 9! It tells me it can't install the OS9 system folder on the destination disk... What do I do? I don't want to have to start over again!!! It also won't recognize my airport card now! HELP!

  • Would like to know the name of the game pre-installed on an eMac.

I would like to know the name of the space ship 3rd-person shooter game pre-installed on an eMac.
Awhile back, I had used an eMac with a previous employer and there was a space ship 3rd-person shooter game loaded on the eMac.
This may or may not have been preinstalled. I just remember it being there when the eMac was purchased.
    Thoughts?

  • Can't install Leopard on external drive

After speaking with someone at the Genius Bar last week, we determined that the problem I'm having with my eMac is probably due to the 4-5 year old internal hard drive finally getting ready to give up the ghost. ;-(
I asked if it would make sense to buy an new external drive, load Leopard on that, and boot off that while I save for a new Mac. He suggested that would work. (While the speed might not be ideal over a USB connection, I'm not too concerned with that. As long as the kids can do their homework, and I have a place to store photos it's fine.)
I just got my new external HD, got it partitioned into 3, and am trying to load 10.5.3 on it from my CD so I can make it the boot drive. The problem is that - while all 3 partitions show up on the "list" of places to install, the internal HD is the only one that will let me install on it. The 3 partitions all say that I can't install on them.
Any idea why I can't install on the external, and more importantly, can I work around it somehow before my internal drive dies for good?
    Thanks,
    Tim

    Hi JDB38;
There is no such thing as an Intel G5. It is either one or the other but never both. An Intel tower is a Mac Pro. A G5 is a tower with a PowerPC processor in it. So which do you have?

  • Please HELP!  Why won't Leopard install on my eMac?

When I put the Leopard DVD in my eMac it does not recognize it at all. I don't hear the drive running, and nothing pops up on the desktop. Altho it is an older machine, it meets all of the system requirements: 1GHz, 640MB, PowerPC G4, with plenty of hard drive space! I've tried to reboot and install, I've tried reboot and hold the C key to install... nothing works! I even put in another DVD just to make sure that the optical drive is still working properly... it played just fine.
I've read everything that I can about installing but haven't found anything that addresses this. I did see one article that said that Leopard cannot be installed on UFS(?)-formatted volumes. Can anyone tell me how I would find out whether I'm affected by that or not? Also, when I tried it in my iBook G4, it popped right up... what's the deal?!
PLEASE HELP! I'M SOOOO FRUSTRATED!! Thanx in advance!

    debkndy wrote:
    Hi There...
So, I currently have a CD read/write and DVD player combo drive... should that be able to read the Leopard Install DVD? I don't understand why my iBook G4, 1GHz with 256MB will read it, but my eMac G$, 1GHz, 640MB won't!
I would suspect that your optical drive is not functioning properly. While the drive is most likely capable of reading DL DVDs, it may not be working right. See if you can skip through a full DL DVD movie on the drive with zero errors. Be sure to include both layers meaning go past the 2-hour point.
The target mode is another solution, but even if you install it, you won't be able to fix it or do anything that requires the DVD unless you fix that first.
I will try to install it using the "target mode" with a firewire and see if it works, unless anyone has any other suggestions for me... thanx.

After Int Install OS10.5.8 on PowerPC G4 having major system problems (created user to verify) CS4 apps go non responsive

Ok no difference, I don't get any drive errors that seem significant or numerous, sometimes I don't get any at all, the disk always verifies and I haven't had to run a repair on it yet. I've gotton one or two drive errors, I'll save them next time I run either DU or DW.... however with permissions, there are a lot and they all fix (except: see below: Last 3: ACL errors are always there) but as I keep having to do force quits and system re boots they keep coming back; posted them below IDK if this will help you to help me, LOL... but figured it couldn't hurt, the ones below are re-occuring I know i've seen them b4. . .  Don't know if this makes a difference but on initial install I had several font conflicts w/system fonts, I renamed suitcases and that error message hasn't come back . . . but do you think this could be a font issue . . . I have like 12,000 fonts of which a couple hundred are ususally always active . . . IDK it doesn't make sense to me it would be, but you never know... just a shot in the dark
I also saved my last PS crash report and it was like 100 Pages long, I've never seen one that long, I make a pdf of it and post link to my idisk, if its something that you can interpet.

I was wondering if the Jaguar Mac OS X 10.3 installation disks that I have for an eMac will work on an iMac G3 flavored edition 333mHz computer. Or is there a separate version for this particular iMac? I have it running 10.1 now, but need Safari for the internet. HELP!!! iMac G3 333mHz   Mac OS X (10.1.x)   Clueless, well a little bit of a clue

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
    10.3 =Panther, not Jaguar.
    10.2 = Jaguar.
I was wondering if the Jaguar Mac OS X 10.3 installation disks that I have for an eMac will work on an iMac G3 flavored edition 333mHz computer.
No. You can't install the gray disks from one Mac on another Mac of a different model or vintage.
The Tangerine iMac has some limitations:
    1. Firmware must be upgraded while booted in 9 or 8, or your display will go permanently blank:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=86117
    2. If you erased 9 or 8, and you find you need a version of 9 or 8 installed, you will need to install the drivers before installing 9 or 8.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=75275
which will probably require wiping your hard drive.
    3. Hard drives over 8 GB need to be partitioned.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106235
    4. Hard drives over 120 GB need to be partitioned as well:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=86178
    5. No Firewire means backing up is a pain, and very slow.
Jaguar that will work after the firmware has been updated looks like:
Panther which will work after the firmware has been upgraded looks like:
Considering the difficulty, and your noviceness, I'd say, stay where you are until you can afford a newer Mac.

What can I do to boot?

Restart with the Option key held down.
If the internal drive shows up, it's the PRAM battery.
If it doesn't, insert a compatible Mac OS 9 or X install disk, click the button with the circular arrow, and either repair the internal drive or install a new OS on it. If it doesn't show up in Disk First Aid(9) or the Disk Utility(X), it's either not plugged in or needs to be replaced.

I also have a Leopard DL disk and having the same problem with my eMac. I bought an external CD drive, but I read that I can't install through USB. Why is that? Would a USB A female to FireWire IEEE 1394 6P converter work? Or do I have to buy another CD drive with a FireWire? Please help.

    Hi,
Very few PPC Macs can boot from USB, most require Firewire... BUT, all 3 of my eMacs can & do boot from USB, try holding the alt or option key at bootup.
A USB<->FW converter will not work.

That works... at least for me but not all users have access to stable high speed Internet... look at all of the aborted, partial or corrupted downloads we see on this forum alone.
The point is, Apple calls the shots and makes it easy on themselves with no alternate option. Not only that, they get free technical support from their users... that actually rely on this forum, clients I know have called Apple in regards to a technical problem and rather than upgrade the query they're sent here. They do know how to keep the ball in their court.
The other point is.. the low price is Apple's carrot on a stick, if someone complains about the download size and time involved, Apple counters.. "that's how were able to keep the price low" which tells me exactly who they're marketing to now.. and it's not professional users because pros wouldn't mind paying a little extra to have options.
