Can't install OS9 on iMac DV

My current iMac is getting old, so a friend of mine gave me a replacement one with a blank HD. Being computer illiterate I followed the instructions on the old Install CD that came with my current machine. I clicked on Clean Install and after it was through, did a restart. The new machine said that installation was successful, although most of the items under the Apple Menu are now gone. Also, it would not let me eject the Install disk, insisting that the install disk WAS the Operating System. I had to force the disk to eject via a paper clip stuck into the slot.
What the heck is going on, and what should I do (other then toss the thing in the trash) ?
I'm computer illiterate, so keep your answers non-technical and understandable. Simple instructions, please

Control Panels are usually kept together within a subfolder in the System Folder. Because they are frequently used, they are, however, made readily accessible through Apple::Control Panels. (There are, of course, exceptions to that generality, but they make themselves apparent when they occur.) The path for Startup Disk is therefore Apple::Control Panels::Startup Disk.
When a CD is the current startup volume it is effectively 'in use' even when it is not being read. Some part of its contents will always be in System memory, so application files on it will notionally be 'open'. The system has an inbuilt constitutional objection to ejecting a volume with open application files, and will tell you so. Normal ejection needs that files be closed, folded and put away neatly. A startup CD finds it difficult to be the agent of its own ejection. This is in contrast to, say, a plain data CD that is being read only at need. Use of the emergency release mech. is best confined to when the iMac is shut down, using Special::Shut Down..., so that all housekeeping is performed in orderly fashion. Then the CD-ROM drive, having been deprived of all sentience, and being no longer on guard against improper ejection, will let go gracefully. In the present case the CD should have been ejected during restart from the hard drive. I doubt that your action will have damaged the CD-ROM drive irreparably, but it would have more-than-ruffled its brow at the time.
eBay is only one of a number of possible sources of a 'full install' CD, in well-worn (avoid) to near-new condition. I cannot tell you the part number of the North American English CD for OS 9.1 (unless it be 691-2748-A), but that for OS 9.2.1 is 691-3334-A. If you can avoid it, do not settle for iMac machine-specific OS 9.0 Install (orange), for OS 9.0.4 Install (grey), for any non-white CD labelled 'Restore', or for a full install version less than OS 9.1. You can expect to pay between USD10 and USD50, depending on the CD's condition and the intensity of competition at auction, or on the fixed price at a bricks-and-mortar emporium.
Your 'new' Mac's hard drive presumably has some kind of System Folder on it as a result of your previous installation. When you have your brand-spanking OK OS 9.1 or 9.2.1 full install CD, it will be cautious of you to trash the previous installation, using your install CD, before making a new installation.
The extras in the Apple Menu of your 'old' machine will have to be transferred to your new machine if they are not amongst the new installation. Before you go to that trouble, however, it will be as well for you to ensure that those extras are useful to you.

  • Can I install os9 on an external drive from mavericks

Can I install OS9 on an external drive from Mavericks? I'm running Mavericks 10.9.4 on both my MBP and 27" iMac. I have my original OS9 install disc. I'd like to install OS9 on an external drive so I can use some classic apps that I'd like to use.
I tried to install directly to an external drive, but when I click on the Mac OS Install icon, I get the message "You can't open the application "%@" because it may be damaged or incomplete." The icon for Mac OS Install is the generic page with an A. Figuring that Mavericks doesn't recognize the app. Then I restarted and held down the C key - no luck.

I understand, but was hoping I boot off an external drive in 9. Thanks for your response and I apologize for my late response.

  • Can I install on the iMac Russian Language? For example, it is possible to install the Russian language in the operating system OS X Lion, if my iMac I bought in the U.S.?

Can I install on the iMac Russian Language? For example, it is possible to installthe Russian language in the operating system OS X Lion, if my iMac I bought in the U.S.?

OS X is the same no matter where it is sold, and Lion can be switched to Russian in a few seconds by changing settings in the system preferences.

  • Can't install OS9 (so as to download iMac Firmware update). . .

this is crazy. i bought my dad Tiger, to instal on his G3 Mac. So I did the media exchange and got all the discs. but couldn't instal Tiger because I needed to update firmware. which i downloaded. but couldn't install firmware because i only had OSX on his iMac. I have the Mac OS 9 install disc, but it won't install. so i'm stuck. it would cost me 45 dollars to get the mac people to help (they would if we were just talking about Tiger). As the wicked witch said, "what a world, what a world..." can anyone tell me how to install the OS 9? I held down the C key, but there was no destination disc showing.
iMac G3   Mac OS X (10.1.x)   need to install OS 9

Hi, Peter, and welcome to Apple Discussions. Most likely the reason there's no destination disk showing is that when you installed OS X previously, you didn't select the option to install OS 9 driver on it. Therefore, even if the disk is working perfectly, OS 9 can't "see" it, and the installer can't install anything on it.
I've never been an iMac user, but it's my understanding that many people who've installed OS X on G3 iMacs before updating their firmware have gotten into a world of trouble that way, some of them ending up with completely nonfunctioning iMacs. You (and Dad) may have been very lucky so far. That may apply only to higher versions of OS X, though; I'm not well enough informed to be certain.
To push your luck any farther, you may need to boot to your installer disk for the already-installed version of OS X (10.1.x, according to your system info below), and erase the drive again using the Disk Utility for that version — NOT the Tiger version of DU — and this time make sure the OS 9 driver option is selected before hitting the Erase button. I don't know of any other way you can get that driver installed. If you don't land in hot water just trying to do that much, you should then be able to install OS 9 and update the iMac's firmware. After that, you'll be free to install Tiger.

  • Can I install OS9 on a Brand new iMac to run Photoshop 6.0.1?

    Hi there;
Today I purchased a brand new iMac. I have been installing my old applications and found that I cannot install Photoshop 6.0.1. The following is the message shown:
"You cannot open the application "Install Adobe Photoshop 6.0.1" because it is not supported on this system"
My old iMac is a G3 and runs on a Panther. Can I install Mac OS 9 on this new Mac so that I can install Photoshop 6.0.1? If yes, how can I do it?
    Regards.

    Hi KP4ABC;
Since the official position of Adobe is that they are no longer supporting PS 7 at all, I would think your chances with PS 6 are right up there with the snowball in that hot place. In order to get anything that works with any reliability you will have to upgrade, probably to PS CS3.
I have to say that PS CS3 is a significant upgrade over PS 7 which is as far back as I go with Photoshop.

  • Can I install my new iMac's OS X Lion software on my other Macs?

I've just acquired a new iMac with the latest version of OS X installed.  I also have an older iMac and a MacBook, both running Snow Leopard and meeting all requirements to run Lion.  Can I use the new iMac's software if all the other Macs are registered in my name?

    No
The license that accompany's an installed version on a new Mac does not allow use on additional machines, but you can purchase and download a copy on one of your other machines and use it on as many as you own.

  • Can't install OSX on iMac DV 400

I have a Blueberry iMac DV 400 with 512MB/10GB and a clean install of 9.1. The hard drive was formatted journaled with Disk Utility from the 10.3 install CD.
I've tried installing 10.3, 10.3.5, and 10.2 with no luck. When trying to install 10.3, I get to the part of the install where it's reading packages and the screen goes blue with the black spinning dial gauge. When I tried to install 10.2, I got the spinning beach ball and then a black screen that said the install could not continue and I needed to restart.
The computer runs fine under 9.1. My niece had been using it for years until she upgraded to an iMac G5
Anyone have any ideas what is causing this?

Thanks. I think I have plenty of hard drive space as it's a 10GB drive and with only OS9 on it, there's about 8GB free space.
However, that article "Mac OS X: Troubleshooting installation and software updates" lead me to this one:
"Troubleshooting Mac OS X installation from CD or DVD"
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106693
As suggested in this article, I will try copying all the files on the CD to the hard drive to check the optical drive. If that works OK, then I'll pull the RAM one DIMM at a time to check that.

Every time I try to install iTunes to my iMac I there were errors installing software and it is directly downloaded from the site. Also the original itunes that came with Tiger does not work. What's the deal?

  • I have iWork box set, can't install on new iMac.

Hi, I recently bought the new 27" iMac and was meaning to install the iWorks suite on it. I have the box set, but I realized that there is no CD-ROM drive. Is there a way I can download iWorks using something on the box set? please help!

You can buy the application anew from the MacAppStore and download them. I wouldn't do that right now as the grapewine says there will come a new upgrade in december.
Do you still have an old computer with the Super drive?

  • I can't install Xcode - My iMac crashes

Until a few months ago, I had an old version of Xcode (I'm sorry, but I don't remember the version) that I downloaded from the Mac App Store. What I downloaded was like an installer for Xcode, rather than Xcode itself. When Mountain Lion came out, I tried to update to the new version of Xocde (now it was the actual Xcode that downloaded) and it downloaded as usual, but when installing, it made my iMac crash. I tried many times, making my computer crash every time, until it finally installed succesfully (honestly, I don't remember if I did something in order to install it succesfully… I think I deleted the older version, I'm not sure). After that, it worked fine and I thought the problem was solved. I had no problem whatsoever installing it in my new MacBook Air.
Today, Apple released a new update for Xcode. And the same thing as before, when it begins the installation, my iMac freezes for a second and then restarts itself. After the restart, Xcode appears "In Pause" or something like that in Launchpad. If I try to open it, I can downloading it again, but when it finishes downloading and begins the installation, it fails as I've described.
What could be the cause of this? And, of course, what can I do in order to fix it? A permanent fix, preferably.
    Thank you.

Same happening to me. I cannot complete Xcode installation because of a crash.
I cannot even run old Xcode, I get an alert about the program being upgraded.
I did a try to the direct installation via .dmg, but it ends up the same.
I suppose I am going to restore previous back up.

  • What OC can be installed on PPC iMac?

My husband's computer, used for searching the web, sending and receiving e-mails.
Unfortunately, we have had issues with the cancellation of MobileMe. He has a second e-mail account, and we cannot access his e-mail with Tiger operating system. iCloud.com tells us that Safari needs to be updated. Research tells us that Safari 4.1.3 is correct for Tiger 10.4.11.
    Can anyone help?
    Thanks,
    Eileen

The last possible OSX for PPC systems is Leopard (10.5.x).
iCloud requires Lion (10.7.x) for full access, and Snow Leopard (10.6) provides limited e-mail access.

  • Cannot install OS9.2.1 system anymore.

    Hello,
I've read some posts that some can't install OS9.2.1. I had OS9.2.1 installed before and now I can't seem to install it using the c key. I get a gray screen.
My gigabit G4 dual 450 with 1.5RAM and 60GB drives allowed me to boot up into 9 so I could run my old apps and dis-continued filters.
    Any suggestions. Thanks.
    Mark

    HI, PB -
The option in OSX's Disk Utiltity to install OS 9 drivers applies only to installing them on a hard drive.
Yes, in the absence of those drivers the machine can not be booted to OS 9 on that hard drive; and, that hard drive can not be mounted when the machine is booted to any OS 9, including OS 9 on another bootable hard drive or to a bootable CD.
However, it has nothing to do with the machine being able to boot to a CD. Additional volumes are mounted after the machine has nearly completed booting to the OS on the boot volume, not before - so no files, or their lack, on a non-boot volume can affect booting. If this were the case, then a G4 could not boot if there were no hard drive - but they can, and do.
I suppose it could happen that if a dual-drive machine had the Master drive without OS 9 drivers but the Slave drive with them, then booting to an OS 9 CD might choke at the end of the booting process - trying to read an ATA bus with a visible Slave but no visible Master might confound the OS. However, I've seen no reports of that (although I may have missed them).
