Can't install OSX after I installed new hard drive

Okay so my 2009 MacBook pro would not start up, took it to the genius bar and they said I need a new hard drive. I installed a Western Digital blue Scorpio one from Best Buy and now when I turn on the computer I just get a flashing folder with a question mark.  I've tried holding down c or option when rebooting, and rebooting with and without the OSX install DVD. I'm never given any options and it either starts up to a blank screen or to the question mark. What am I doing wrong?

You need to prep the drive first:
Drive Preparation and Installation
1. Boot from your OS X Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button.  When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area.  If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing.  SMART info will not be reported  on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Security button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
7. Quit DU after formatting and return to the installer. Install Snow Leopard.
Booting From An OS X Installer Disc
1. Insert OS X Installer Disc into the optical drive.
2. Restart the computer.
3. Immediately after the chime press and hold down the "C" key.
4. Release the key when the spinning gear below the dark gray Apple logo appears.
5. Wait for installer to finish loading.

just installed a new hard drive, and am getting a white screen with a flashing folder witha ?. please help!!!!! i also dont have my install discs.

With no OS X discs on hand, and no bootable backup .... do you have a friend with a mac that you can hook up via firewire cable in target disk mode?
If those are all no, you can call Apple support to see if you can buy another set of OS X disks that came with your system, or if you just want to install the 10.6 Snow Leopard operating system, you can call the online Apple store at 800-MY-APPLE to buy a copy, or take your system to an Apple store or Apple Authorized Service Provider and see if they'll initialize and install an operating system for you.

  • Re-installing OSX Lion on a new hard drive

I'm thinking about replacing my 320 GB hard drive. I just bought my mac a couple of weeks ago. I noticed that Apple recently upgraded their line of macbook pro computers. Since I want to replace my hard drive with a new one. I was wondering if I really need to clone an external hard drive in order to reinstall osx lion again? Should I follow this procedure that I saw on apple's web site?
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4718

No, you don't need to do that.  Just literally clone the old drive to the new one using Carbon Copy Cloner (CCC), Super Duper or the Mac's Disk Utility.  Best way to do that IMHO is to put the new drive into an external enclosure, preferably FireWire since it's a lot faster than USB, do the clone to the external, reboot to the external to make sure it's working correctly, and then swap the internal and external.  Not only is this faster, it leaves you with a bootable clone (your old internal drive) in case of emergency.
Replacing the hard drive in a MacBook Pro is pretty straightforward.  You'll just need the right size Phillips and Torx screwdrivers.

  • Can't find files after restore onto new hard drive

    Hi,
I just installed a larger hard drive.  I saved a disk image to an external drive, made a recovery disk, booted off the recovery disk, and restored the saved disk image.   Then I took the new unallocated space, formatted it, and created a mounted volume in a folder on the C: drive (My Documents).  I moved everything under My Documents to this new mounted volume.  In other words: C:\My Documents is now a mounted volume, not actually in the C: partition.
The trouble is, the files are there but in many instances they aren't findable.  It seems like there are caches of directory structures in various places that have to be rebuilt, or there are virtual pathnames (e.g. C:\Users\myusername\Documents) that have to be reset.  For example, I have a spreadsheet with references to values in other spreadsheets.  It can't find these anymore, even though the pathnames ought to be the same.
Does anyone have any suggestions on how to fix this problem?
    Thanks very much.
    - bill.

I have only played with XP for sure on changing the location of the my documents folder. It usually involves right clicking on it and going to properties and changing it. Sounds like you may need to copy things around, and then, edit the location on the my documents folder. I am not really sure what your situation is.

  • How can I re-install CS2 upgrade on a new hard drive without serial no. of previous Photoshop 5?

A new hard drive has been installed on my G4 Mac with OS10.4. I am trying to re-install CS2 Premium on the new hard drive but I no longer have the serial number of my previous Photoshop 5. I need to enter this as the CS2 was an upgrade. I have spoken to Adobe technical support but they no longer support CS2 so are not able to help. They recommended that I try the Adbe Forum. All my Adobe products have been bought legitimately. I know people manage to use pirated Adobe software so there must be some way for me to activate a legally bought product.

    Michael
Thank you for your email and suggestion.
I have tried that and the only product listed is my CS5 Design Premium (which was an upgrade), none of my previous Adobe products are listed.
I am now looking to see if I can buy an old version of Photoshop that will work on a Power PC G4 Mac with OS 10.4.
I only need Photoshop on that Mac to paint from, not the rest of the Suite.
It is infuriating that I already have a legitimately bought Adobe product (as all mine have been) but I am unable to use it.
    Regards
    Trevor

At startup hold down the Command+Option/Alt+r keys until you see a globe on the screen. Then use disk utility to partition and format the drive HSF+ and then select Reinstall Mac OS X. whatever version of OS X that originally came on your system will be installed and then you can upgrade back to Mavericks.

  • Need Help Installing an OS on a new Hard Drive

H, I just installed a new Hard Drive on my G4. My problem is I cannot find the original G4 install discs.
I do have OSX Panther discs which I bought later. Can I use these to install a new OS?
How would I do this as the new Hard Drive is brand new and probably not formatted? Do I power up the mac and load the Panther install disc 1 or is this not the correct procedure?
Also I have an external LaCie CD drive because the one in the mac doesn't work. Will the external LaCie CD drive be recognized when I put the OSX Panther discs in it to install an OS on my new Hard Drive?
Sorry for so many questions but I don't want to mess this up.
    Thanks

Thanks for replying Thomas. Well my G4 Hard Drive was shot so I took it out and installed a new one so I have to reinstall everything (new OS & all applications). I tried to use Super Duper to Clone the HD but the HD was too far gone, so now I need to install an OS on the new Hard Drive.
I can't find my original G4 install cd's. I do have Panther OS discs and an iLife disc I bought awhile back. Can I use these instead of the original G4 install disc?
Here's the process to install a new OS as I understand it. Please correct me if I am wrong or am missing a step.
    1) Put the first Panther install disc in the cd tray.
    2) Power up the G4 while holding down the "C" key
    3) Follow the installation instructions
    Thanks!

    padman215, welcome to the forum,
you need to boot from the Rescue and Recovery cd and select to recover the system and then to recover to factory state. It will then eventually ask for the other discs.
Please be sure that you read the messages carefully; if it asks for a supplementary disc, (which you don't seem to have), you need to click on "no" should it ask for one - this throws alot of people.
    Happy installing

  • Trouble installing 10.4 on a new hard drive

My hard drive died, so I'm trying to install 10.4 on a new hard drive. I'm using the same disk that came with my laptop. I get as far as "select a destination" and the hard drive doesn't show up to choose. I saw another post that suggested partitioning the hard drive first, so I did that, and still no luck. Can anyone help?

Thanks for the welcome, and for the attempt to help. I'm starting to wonder if I got a bum replacement hard drive? I've just restarted twice, it now takes FOREVER for the apple and the little spinny thing to show up when I start up and hold down the C key, and now when I go to disk utility the hard drive doesn't show up in the list of choices at all. Do you think it's worth pulling out the hard drive and sticking it back in again? I have no idea if that will make any difference?

Okay, so, fast forward from July to now -
    - I've visited my closest Apple store's genius bar twice now. (Over an hour and a half away.)
    - My computer spent at least 8 hours behind their closed doors in the workshop
    - Several complete erases of the harddrive have taken place
    - Most of the Apple geniuses I dealt with were nice and very knowledgeable, but they were and still aren't 100% sure exactly what is wrong with my computer.
    The good news is:
    - They were able to at least get it running again, with a clean install from their servers of OS X Lion 10.7.5
    - They believe that my problems stem from either 1 of 2 things:
            - Faulty Hard Drive (even though it is brand new)
             - The wrong build of software being installed.
Now, while the wrong build does seem like it could be the problem, it doesn't make sense in the aspect that all of the initial problems began when the first hard drive failed. The same problems continued when I changed out the failed hard drive with the brand spanking new one, and only slightly improved when I was able to successfully install the OS that came with the original disks for my computer. I'm not convinced this thing is back to normal, but hopefully I can make it last through getting a shiny new retina Macbook Pro in the coming future. Thank you so much to everyone who read and replied to this post!

  • Installing OS X on a NEW hard drive

I just installed a new hard drive on the macbook pro. however, when i run the installation disk it never actually installes os x instead it trys to install the applications, but cant find the drive. How do I install OS X on a new hard drive? Thanks.

    Hello,
The first thing you need to do is partition and format the drive.
From the OS X installation screen, go up to the menus at the top, and locate Disk Utility.
    Launch Disk Utility.
Now, select your hard drive on the left.
Then, click on the Partitions Tab.
Now, choose the single partition option (unless you want to divide the drive for some reason). Then, give it a name.
Choose the format "Mac OS X Extended (Journaled).
Now, click on the button to partition the drive.
When it's done, exit Disk Utility.
Now, proceed with the installation. If it still won't see the hard drive, then re-start from the installation disk again and try it again. It should see the hard drive now and permit you to install on it.
    I hope this helps.

I have recently restored everything on my iMac after getting a new hard drive. When i try to use Elements, i get the following error code   ERROR  150:30. Any ideas?

Did you use migration assistant to copy over programs, documents, and settings? You can't do that with PSE. Elements is not a tidy package in accordance with the apple developer guidelines. The installer strews stuff all of your hard drive in place the migration assistant isn't programmed to look and you can never hope to find all h the bits. You must always install PSE from scratch on a new machine. By attempting to copy it you have made a lot of trouble for yourself.
You will need to download and run this:
Use the CC Cleaner Tool to solve installation problems | CC, CS3-CS6
and then you can go around and manually remove what you can reach. Look in applications, your hard drive>library>application support>adobe, your username>library>preferences. In the user library also delete any saved application states for PSE.
Then you can reinstall from scratch.

  • Can't install OS 10.4 on new hard drive

I installed a new WD 320Gb hard drive in our PowerBook G4 today but can't load the os. I connected the G4 as a target to another mac and partitioned the new drive and erased it with zero. Everything looks good there but . . . the g4 wont recognize the original installation disk. If I just reboot and hold the c key, the computer gets hung up on a blue screen. If I reboot holding down the option key, the disk appears along with apple hardware test (which when run says that it doesn't support this machine). Also, I tried using the installation disk for a new mac mini (ox 10.5) That get's me to the choose language screen but then says it can't load the os. I can then get to the disk utility which sees the new hard drive and it appears to be configured properly.
    thoughts?

are the install disks that come with the computer limited to that specific computer? We have 2 powerbook G4s (a 15 and a 17 inch) The 15inch is giving me the trouble. It's possible that I grabbed the install disk for the 17inch.
Never used the disks before. When I insert the disk, reboot and hold the c key, the computer eventually goes to a solid blue screen without anything on it and stops.
As an experiment, I inserted the install disk in the 15, then attached the 15 to the 17 as a target. Teh 15 mounted on the 17 with the install disk mounting. I then drilled down through the install files until I go to the os install package and double clicked. It started to install but after about an hour it ended with an error message.
