Can't install OSX on a hard drive

I connected a small HD (10GB) in a Firewire external case. Wanted to install Jaguar onto this small HD. Initialized the HD. A message read, "You can not install Mac OSX on this disk. You cannot start up your computer using this disk."
Didn't notice the jumpers, might this be the reason I am given the message above, perhaps it does not have the correct jumper settings?
At first, when I put the 10GB HD into the Mac, it did not show up in X, then I put the jumpers in the Master position, all was well until I used 9.2.2 and this HD doesn't show up on the desktop.

Mac OS X has common drivers built in, but OS 9 requires a driver be installed before it can mount a Hard drive.
If you are running OS 9 you can use Drive Setup to "Update Driver" if permitted. Otherwise, you will have to initialize the drive, which partitions, installs a driver, and creates a directory. Use HFS+ Extended mode.
If you are using Mac OS X, use Disk Utility, HFS+Extended mode, and be sure that the box for "Install Mac OS 9 Drivers is checked. They don't take up much space and you cannot do it later.
If the drive is used, I recommend selecting "Write Zeroes" or "Zero all Data" This process takes several hours, but forces the drive to write a known pattern into every block and verify that it can be read back without resorting to error-correction Hardware. If error correction is required, the block is declared bad and a spare block is substituted at the Drive Hardware level.

OS X doesn't matter what disk you boot from, as long as it can be formatted properly in Disk Utility. You can boot from a USB stick drive if it's big enough.
Thunderbolt would be the fastest, the drive would be the limiting factor there. You can find Thunderbolt drives like these at stores like macsales.com. But USB 3 might also feel fast enough.
If you have boot systems installed on many drives connected to your Mac, the way you tell the Mac which one to use is to hold down the Option key at startup. This will present icons of all the connected drives you can boot from, then you just pick one and go.

Can't install Mavericks to my hard drive: what should I do?

I am using a mid-2010 Macbook with Snow Leopard. I have been trying to install OS X Mavericks, with no real success. When I downloaded and ran the installer, it would not let me select my internal hard drive as start-up disk. I used a flash drive, assuming that, for whatever reason, I would be expected to install in onto my hard drive from the stick; what actually happened (sensibly enough, I suppose) was that, if I left the stick in the USB port when I started up the laptop, I got Mavericks running rather slowly; whereas if I started up without the stick, I got Snow Leopard running normally - and in no instance did I see a way to get Mavericks from the stick to the hard drive. I have found no mention anywhere else of those who install Mavericks having to run it from an external hard drive. What is going on? How do I get Mavericks on my computer? Do I really need, or even want, to?

It sounds like you are unable to install Mavericks due to this error message that you cannot use the disk to start the computer but it is the only partition you have on the hard drive. I recommend the troubleshooting from the following article. While the title of it mentions Mac OS X Lion, the steps are relevant for Mac OS X Mavericks as well:

Install OSX on new Hard Drive - need to create install disc or drive

So my old hard disk got wrecked and is in the trash can right now. I got a new one and I'm trying to install OSX from scratch on this new HD.
Problem is, my Macbook Pro (late 2011) came with Lion and no installation disk.
I have a laptop with windows, a 8GB USB drive and some blank dvd disks. Can I create an installation disk with those tools? I don't care if it's Lion or Mavericks.
I looked it over and couldn't find any direct way on doing this. Every page I found assumed I already had an installation disk or an image downloaded.
(I can even borrow a friend's mac if I for some reason it's not possible to do it via windows)

All you need to do is download one of the full OS installers on your Mac from the Mac App Store. You do not have to install it just download the installer.
Then use Diskmaker X (http://liondiskmaker.com) to make a bootable USB flash drive.

Installing OSX on new hard drive

New to discussions and novice with the Mac OS so bear with me. Got a new Mac Pro 3.0 with the standard 250GB hard drive. I've got 4 Samsung 500GB drives I am installing. In bay 2 & 3 I created a RAID 0. No problem. I formated the drive in bay 4 with a GUID partition and want to install a fresh copy of OSX, my other applications and settings and make it my boot drive. Can I do that with the original restore discs? Then when that is done successfully I want to transfer any other settings/info from the original 250GB drive in bay 1. Then move the drive from bay 4 to 1 and get rid of the 250GB drive. I will put the remaining drive in bay 4 for time machine. I have 500GB of music on the 1TB setup and will be adding a lot of pictures. I am starting to use Aperture and shoot in RAW. I also have a 1TB WD My Book for back up of my RAID O data. Does this sound logical and can I set up a boot drive while using the original drive and then switch when I'm ready? Hope this makes since and thanks in advance for the help. dobster

Thanks for the reply. Some additional concerns. The OSX that I'd be cloning was originally migrated from a PowerPC G4 to the Intel Mac Pro. The Carbon Cloning directions said not to clone from one to the other. Since this was migrated first does it now become an Intel based OSX and then not be a problem? Also, I thought I read that a migrated copy of OSX was slower that a freshly installed version. Any thoughts to that and would it apply here? I'm trying to set the best foundation for the future. Then when Lepeord comes along will that upgrade have any effect on which path I take? I'm hoping I'm just being anal about this, but in my old PC days it seemed that every change I made screwed up something.

i have a mac book which i got a flashing question mark in a folder on macbook and have changed the hard drive and am now trying to install any osx on to the hard drive but cannot find the original install disks to do this.
is there any other way of putting a osx on there i have a dvd of lion is it possible to put this on there without having to put tiger back on thee first please help and how do i get in to the boot system.

You need to bring up Disk Utility to partition the hard drive before you can use it. So you need either a bootable operating system disk or bootable external hard drive. Bring up Disk Utility, and click partition. Choose the partition layout (most use 1 partition), give the disk a name, choose mac os extended (journaled) for the format, click options and be sure GUID format is chosen. Click apply, and your disk is formatted.
If your system meets Lion requirements, once the hard drive is partitioned/initialized, you can install Lion.

What would I need to do? I have a 250 gig hard drive now, I would like to install a 1 terabite. Would I need to install the os then update it with the time machine backup to have everything that I have now? I have a MacBook Pro 13 inch with OSX Snow leapord. I had gotten this notebook mid summer of 2010. Any comment would be appreicated.

Right now, I have a 320 gig hhd that I use for my time machine backup, I recently backed up my notebook, if I decide to upgrade the hhd to a 1 tera, I will get another 1 terahhd for time machine backup. I just wanted to know if I could change the hhd, install the os and instead of installing all the drivers, music, movies that I purchased, if time machine backup would do that for me. Can't install Panther on new hard drive

After my old hard drive failed on my IMac DV400, I bought a new 40GB hard drive. I put it in and when I put in Disc 1 of OS X 10.3, it gets to the destination drive and the pic has the drive with a ! mark in red and it says it can't load it as it is not in the first 8MB of the drive and will not let me go any farther. I erased the drive using the disc utility and now what do I need to do? I know on an IBM compatable, I have to format the drive but the disc utility doesn't have that option. What next? Bob

As Niel indicated, you need to format your HDD so that the first partition is less than 8 GB.
Formatting, Partitioning Erasing a Hard Disk Drive
Boot from the install CD holding down the "C" key.
Select language
• Go to the Utilities menu (Tiger) Installer menu (Panther & earlier) and launch Disk Utility.
• Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in left side bar.
• Select Partition tab in main panel. (You are about to create tqo partitions.)
• Click on Options button
• Select number of partitions in pull-down menu above Volume diagram. You are creating two partitions.
• Either adjust the size of the volume in the diagram or type in the size field 7.9 GB
• Type in name in Name field (usually Macintosh HD) for Partition 1 and something like Data for Partition 2
• Select Volume Format as Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
Optional: Check box to Install OS 9 Drivers
• Click Partition button at bottom of panel.
• Select Erase tab
• Select the sub-volume (indented) under Manufacturer ID (usually Macintosh HD).
• Check to be sure your Volume Name and Volume Format are correct.
• Click Erase button
• Quit Disk Utility.

Imac g5- can't install os on new hard drive

I have an iMac G5 that I haven't used in a while. When trying to turn it on today, I got the "question mark" folder. I tried to do some troubleshooting- tried to reinstall os x, but the hard drive didn't show up in the os x installer OR in disk utility. I went to my local Apple store and I was told that I needed a new hd. So, I bought a new hd and installed it. I still have problems, though! When I try to install os x, it says, "This software cannot be installed on this computer". I am using the install disc that originally came with the computer. The hd doesn't show up in the os x installer, but it does show up in disc utility. I have no idea what to do at this point. Please help!
Also, the new hd I bought is a Maxtor SATA II/300.

I am using the os x 10.4.2 install disk. The computer originally came with 10.4.0 install disks, but I misplaced them. The 10.4.2 install disk says it's for an iMac, though, so it should be working.. right?
Maybe, maybe not, Chuck. THis is almost certainly the cause of your problem, in fact.
If yours came with 10.4.0 originally it would have been a "Rev A" model (which probably had a version of Panther on it subsequently upgraded to Tiger) . 10.4.2 first arrived with the slightly different ALS model, though.
If you have access to the computer that came the with the 10.4.2 discs, you may be able to workaround the issue by connecting the one you are trying to instal on to the later one with a firewire cable, booting the one you want to install on in "Target Disk" mode (so it appears on the later computer's desktop), and then installing , using the DVD drive on the later computer.
This won't work in all circumstances (because of variations in the machine specific OS discs) , but in your case I think it would probably work. Note, though, that I am assuming you really do have a Tiger disc for the older iMac, as legally it is the one that provides you with a licence to install Tiger.
The best solution would be to find the original discs. If you can't then you should try to obtain a replacement set from Apple.

Can't Install OS on new Hard Drive

I just got a brand new iMac G5 with a bad Hard Drive. Apple sent a new hard drive but after I installed it I can't install the OS 10.4. I ran Disk First Aid and it says Invalid extent entry, Volume check failed, ERROR: The underlying task reported failure on exit, 1 HFS volume checked, 1 volume could not be repaired because of an error. I also can not run the Apple Care disc because I have a wireless mouse. I have installed no hardware upgrades.

Like Mike said, erase fixes that type of error a lot of times. I have also had a lot of success using a program called DiskWarrior. It rebuilds the directory files and usually fixes errors like that without data loss.

Can't install(format?) new hard drive

I recently purchased a Wetern Digital Scorpio 250GB PATA HD for my Toshiba M35X-S114. This was the drive recommened on the Toshiba Laptop Accessories page. I physically instaled the new drive but can't figure out how to get it started. I used the System Recovery DVD for my computer thinking I could install the original software on the new hard drive. The guy on the tech support phoneline said I could. When I tried to use the recovery disc I got all the wall to the message where it prompts me to "press C for continue or A to abort". When I press C, the cursor moves right below the prompt and just blinks. The tech support line said the process may take several hours but I let it do this for for 3.5 hours and the cursor was still just blinking below the continue/abort message. Is this normal? Do I just need to be patient? When I used the recovery disk on the old, original hard drive my computer was completely recovered in 45 minutes. Oh, BIOS reads "none" next to hard disk. I hope this helps.

It works. Just a pain!!
Hard drives of SATA type interface does not have jumpers to configure. You
can still use a SATA 3.0Gb/s drive (set to 3.0Gb/s) in your system, but it
will only work at 1.5Gb/s.
If your have a PC system, you can temporarily install the drive internally
and use our utility called Feature Tool that'll allow you to change various
ATA settings. This utility has the diskette and CD version. If you do not
have a floppy drive and are unable to create a Feature Tool diskette, you
can select the Feature Tool CD image. The fourth download link is for the
image file. This file will allow you to create a bootable CD version of
Feature Tool when a floppy diskette drive is unavailable. For instructions
on how to properly use this file, please refer to the documentation
included with your CD burning software.
If you have any questions regarding the usage of Feature Tool, please refer
to the User's Guide (see page 17 on how to change the drive capacity). The
Feature Tool and User's Guide can be downloaded from the following URL:

HP 6280t Desktop. Can I install a 2nd IDE hard drive??

I have a HP p 6280t desktop. I have some old spare hard drives from prior PC's...all of these drives are IDE. The current hard drive in my 6280 is a SATA. The motherboard is HP part 492774 001.
I do not see how I can connect the IDE drive....Please help. Be descriptive in your explanation.
